Abstract:The rapid development of science and technology has advanced the scientific transformation and resulted in scientific turn of humanistic ideas. For the adherence to the scientism, it is necessary to remove the ethical obstacles in the study of humanities and abandon the traditional objective thinking of the abstract ideology of "seeing is believing". Although the integration of humanities and science is the trend of our times, we should look for theories for its theoretical support and guidance. Most current theories are unable to fulfill this mission, so we need to find and construct new theories. The ethical literary criticism based on science can play a role in the integration of human literature and science. Only the literary theory combined with science can free us from the traditional ethical fetters, can we understand the humanities from the science, and find the way to break through the predicament of humanistic studies.
Humanities Encounters Science: Confronting the Challenge of Post-humanism

Abstract:Post-humanism has recently come to China and challenges traditional humanism and the humanities. The author first offers a reflection on the evolution of humanism in modern Chinese intellectual history. To the author, we are now in a 'post-theoretical era', in which the function of theory is no longer so powerful and ubiquitous as it used to be. It is then argued that the rise of the post-humanist' trend in the West during the past decades indicates that, in the present era, humankind is only one of many species on earth, whose existence and development, to a large extent, depend on natural law. At the same time, post-humanism tells us that humankind may no longer be able to control some of its own creations. The author concludes by calling for digital humanities to bridge the gap between science and humanities and to establish a new relationship between the two.

Abstract:As we know, globalization has been one of the most discussed and debated theoretical topics since the beginning of the 1990s, especially among scholars of humanities and social sciences. More and more people have realized that they cannot survive without globalization. For instance, among today’s young people in China, the so-called ‘cell phone disease’ can be observed everywhere: these youngsters would be almost incapable of doing anything should they lose their cell phones. In writing their theses, university students would rather download references from websites than borrow books or academic journals from libraries. Many of them would rather even read online than read hard copies of reference materials. People may well raise the following questions: what is the use of studying the humanities? And will the humanities bring opportunities for job competition? If the answer to these questions is negative, why then should we still keep humanities courses on the university curricula? As compared with the difficult situation of the humanities, social sciences seem much better off, especially economics and business management, as well as international studies. But the above questions apply to us all. As scholars of the humanities and social sciences we cannot but confront them and try to give our answers. To deal with these questions in detail, the International Conference on Humanities, Social Sciences, Globalization, and China was held from 15–17 May 2014 in Beijing. This conference was jointly organized by Academia Europaea (AE), Tsinghua University and Shanghai Jiao Tong University. Abstract:Science and humanities are two basic ways of human being comprehending the nature. There is tremendous difference between science and humanities in many aspects such as pattern of thinking, quality of spirit, meaning of culture and orientation of value. They are not only independent but also irreducible each other. It is completely wrong to set science against humanities, because they are different in one side but they have same origination in the other side. They exist in a harmonious way and cooperate each other to unite as a whole. Both science and humanities originate from human being to seek and yearn freedom. Both of them are free and conscious activities that reflect characteristics of human being. Both of them are practical ways that proves convincingly free essence of human being.

Abstract:ABSTRACTThis study addresses the need for a shared understanding of humanities data to enhance data curation. Through interviews with 27 scholars, it identifies two ways scholars conceptualize data ‐ by format or role in research. It highlights three unique aspects: diverse requirements of materiality and processing levels, significance of authorship and perspective, and the dual role of tertiary sources. The study suggests prioritizing provenance, facilitating data documentation, curating tertiary sources for wider use, and establishing scholarly communication mechanisms for effective data curation.

The Humanities in China: History and Challenges

Abstract:Although the humanities in China have enjoyed a long and rich tradition, they emerged only relatively recently as a separate group of university disciplines. In the classical period, learning in China was categorized according to diverse schemes such as the Six Arts, the Seven Epitomes, or the Four Branches. Research and education took place in different institutions: schools of classical learning; the Imperial College; academies as schools of private education; and Buddhist temples, or vihāra. Only from the end of the nineteenth century on were the humanities formally established according to the system of the modern university and its disciplinary principles. Three main elements characterize the development of the modern humanities in China. First, they were closely associated with the self-narrative of the new Chinese nation-state, and their disciplinary division was strongly influenced by the situation in European and American universities. Second, the humanities came into being as offshoots of theology and classical learning that gradually lost their sacred status. Finally, the humanities from their inception competed for dominance with the sciences. Today these three characteristics face transformative challenges.

Abstract:Purpose As the humanities develop in the realm of increasingly more pronounced digital scholarship, it is important to provide quality subject access to a vast range of heterogeneous information objects in digital services. The study aims to paint a representative picture of the current state of affairs of the use of subject index terms in humanities journal articles with particular reference to the well-established subject access needs of humanities researchers, with the purpose of identifying which improvements are needed in this context. Design/methodology/approach The comparison of subject metadata on a sample of 649 peer-reviewed journal articles from across the humanities is conducted in a university repository, against Scopus, the former reflecting local and national policies and the latter being the most comprehensive international abstract and citation database of research output. Findings The study shows that established bibliographic objectives to ensure subject access for humanities journal articles are not supported in either the world's largest commercial abstract and citation database Scopus or the local repository of a public university in Sweden. The indexing policies in the two services do not seem to address the needs of humanities scholars for highly granular subject index terms with appropriate facets; no controlled vocabularies for any humanities discipline are used whatsoever. Originality/value In all, not much has changed since 1990s when indexing for the humanities was shown to lag behind the sciences. The community of researchers and information professionals, today working together on digital humanities projects, as well as interdisciplinary research teams, should demand that their subject access needs be fulfilled, especially in commercial services like Scopus and discovery services.

Abstract:International scholarly publishing is a multifaceted and interconnected activity around the globe. This paper critically examines the linguistic facet of scholarly publication as a global phenomenon. We investigated the distribution of languages in the Social Sciences Citation Index and the Arts and Humanities Citation Index lists to determine Chinese humanities and social sciences scholars' choice of language as recorded in the Web of Science when publishing in selected disciplines. Covering a ten-year period from 2005 to 2014, the findings show that English was by far the most preferred language. Although other languages have a presence in the two key lists, Asian languages were conspicuously absent. Chinese scholars' language preferences have been almost exclusively confined to English and Chinese, and they have limited multilingual abilities for scholarly publication. The findings are discussed in relation to equity and multidirectionality in international scholarly publishing.

Abstract:Use of humanities content in American medical education has been debated for well over 60 years. While many respected scholars and medical educators have purported the value of humanities content in medical training, its inclusion remains unstandardized, and the undergraduate medical curriculum continues to be focused on scientific and technical content. Cited barriers to the integration of humanities include time and space in an already overburdened curriculum, and a lack of consensus on the exact content, pedagogy and instruction. Edmund Pellegrino, physician and scholar of the latter twentieth century, spent much of his professional life promoting the value and importance of the humanities in medical education, seeking the best way to incorporate and teach this content in clinically relevant ways. His efforts included the founding of multiple enterprises starting in the 1960s and 1970s to promote human values in medical education, including the Society for Health and Human Values and its Institute on Human Values in Medicine. Regardless of his efforts and those of many others into the current century, the medical humanities remains a curricular orphan, unable to find a lasting home in medical education and training.
