Abstract:Let either $GL(E)\times SO(F)$ or $GL(E)\times Sp(F)$ act naturally on the space of matrices $E\otimes F$. There are only finitely many orbits, and the orbit closures are orthogonal and symplectic generalizations of determinantal varieties, which can be described similarly using rank conditions. In this paper, we study the singularities of these varieties and describe their defining equations. We prove that in the symplectic case, the orbit closures are normal with good filtrations, and in characteristic $0$ have rational singularities. In the orthogonal case we show that most orbit closures will have the same properties, and determine precisely the exceptions to this.

Abstract:In this paper, we classify the groups of semisimilarities of finite classical polar spaces with exactly two orbits on the singular or isotropic points. As a byproduct, we obtain many highly symmetric regular sets in the point graphs of finite classical polar spaces.

Abstract:In this paper, we solve a classical counting problem for non-degenerate quadratic forms defined on a vector space in odd characteristic; given a subspace $\pi$, we determine the number of non-singular subspaces that are trivially intersecting with $\pi$ and span a non-singular subspace with $\pi$. Lower bounds for the quantity of such pairs where $\pi$ is non-singular were first studied in `Glasby, Niemeyer, Praeger (Finite Fields Appl., 2022)', which was later improved for even-dimensional subspaces in `Glasby, Ihringer, Mattheus (Des. Codes Cryptogr., 2023)' and generalised in `Glasby, Niemeyer, Praeger (Linear Algebra Appl., 2022)'. The explicit formulae, which allow us to give the exact proportion and improve the known lower bounds were derived in the symplectic and Hermitian case in `De Boeck and Van de Voorde (Linear Algebra Appl. 2024)'. This paper deals with the more complicated quadratic case.

Abstract:Let $\mathcal{K}=\mathbb{F}_q((x^{-1}))$. Analogous to orthogonality in the Euclidean space $\mathbb{R}^n$, there exists a well-studied notion of ultrametric orthogonality in $\mathcal{K}^n$. In this paper, we extend the work of \cite{AB24} about counting results related to orthogonality in $\mathcal{K}^n$. For example, we answer an open question from \cite{AB24} by bounding the size of the largest ``orthogonal sets'' in $\mathcal{K}^n$. Furthermore, we investigate analogues of Hadamard matrices over $\mathcal{K}$. Finally, we use orthogonality to compute the number of sublattices of $\mathbb{F}_q[x]^n$ with a certain geometric structure, as well as to determine the number of orthogonal bases for a sublattice in $\mathcal{K}^n$. The resulting formulas depend crucially on successive minima.

Abstract:Let $X$ be a smooth projective quadric defined over a field of characteristic 2. We prove that in the Chow group of codimension 2 or 3 of $X$ the torsion subgroup has at most two elements. In codimension 2, we determine precisely when this torsion subgroup is nontrivial. In codimension 3, we show that there is no torsion if $\dim X\ge 11$. This extends the analogous results in characteristic different from 2, obtained by Karpenko in the nineteen-nineties.

Abstract:We prove that if $G$ is a finite simple group, then all irreducible complex representations of $G$ by be realized over the real numbers if and only if every element of $G$ may be written as a product of two involutions in $G$. This follows from our result that if $q$ is a power of $2$, then all irreducible complex representations of the orthogonal groups $\mathrm{O}^{\pm}(2n, \mathbb{F}_q)$ may be realized over the real numbers. We also obtain generating functions for the sums of degrees of several sets of unipotent characters of finite orthogonal groups, and we obtain a twisted version of our main result for a broad family of finite classical groups.

Abstract:We determine the smallest irreducible Brauer characters for finite quasi-simple orthogonal type groups in non-defining characteristic. Under some restrictions on the characteristic we also prove a gap result showing that the next larger irreducible Brauer characters have a degree roughly the square of those of the smallest non-trivial characters.

As a generalization, we study vector spaces and singular linear spaces over commutative rings and obtain some Anzahl formulas of subspaces. Moreover, we discuss arcs and caps by using these formulas.

Abstract:We develop cycle index generating functions for orthogonal groups in even characteristic, and give some enumerative applications. A key step is the determination of the values of the complex linear-Weil characters of the finite symplectic group, and their inductions to the general linear group, at unipotent elements. Abstract:In this article, we study the eigenvalues and eigenfunction problems for the Laplace operator on multivalued functions, defined on the complement of the 2n points on the round sphere. These eigenvalues and eigensections could also be viewed as functions on the configuration spaces of points, introduced and systematically studied by Taubes-Wu. Critical eigenfunctions, which serve as local singularity models for gauge theoretical problems, are of particular interest.

The geometry of orthogonal groups over finite fields

Abstract:Preface This lecture note is based on the lectures given at Kyushu University in 1994 and at Ateneo de Manila University in 1995. In these lectures I presented the theory of quadratic forms over finite fields. The emphasis is placed on geometric and combinatorial objects, rather than the orthogonal group itself. Our goal is to introduce dual polar spaces as distance-transitive graphs in a self contained way. Prerequisites are linear algebra, and finite fields. In the later part of the lecture, familiarity with counting the number of subspaces of a vector space over a finite field is helpful. This lecture note is not intended as a full account of dual polar spaces. It merely treats those of type D n (q), B n (q) and 2 D n (q). One can treat other types, namely, those coming from symplectic groups and unitary groups, in a uniform manner, but I decided to restrict our attention to the above three types in order to save time. Once the reader finishes this note, he/she should be able to learn the other cases with ease. A motivation of writing this note, as well as giving the lecture, is to make the reader get acquainted with nontrivial examples of distance-transitive graphs. I consider Ham-ming graphs and Johnson graphs trivial, as one can establish their distance-transitivity without any special knowledge. The book by Brouwer–Cohen–Neumaier [2] seems too advanced for the beginning students, while other books on the classical groups and their geometries are oriented toward group theory. I hope this lecture note serves as a starting point for the reader to further study of distance-transitive and distance-regular graphs. The presentation of this lecture note is strictly toward an introduction of dual polar spaces of type D n (q), B n (q) and 2 D n (q). I have tried to throw away whatever unnecessary, to make it short. The Witt's extension theorem is included in the appendix for the sake of completeness. This fundamental theorem will not be used in the main text. This lecture note was completed while the author was visiting Ateneo de Manila University, under a grant from JSPS–DOST.
