Abstract:The oriental armyworm, Mythimna separata (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) is a harmful pest which causes heavy loss in agricultural crops. Sex identification of M. separata is very important for understanding the biology and management of this pest. Development of fast and convenient methods to identify M. separata female and male is the necessary prerequisite for conducting gender-related studies. In this study, new methods to differentiate sex of M. separata at pupal and adult stages were investigated. Our results showed that posterior abdominal segments containing genital organs which are morphological traits to differentiate female and male. Genital openings are important characters for the female and male pupae differentiation. For female pupa, it locates on the ventral side of eighth and ninth abdominal segments and appears as a visible longitudinal suture; for male pupa, it locates on the ventral side of the ninth abdominal segment and appears as a short slit surrounded by a pair of visible semicircular lumps. Bristle numbers are another indicator for sex differentiation of adults. Each female has three-bristled frenulum and each male has one bristled-frenulum near the base of hind wing of each side of moth body. We confirmed the two sex differentiation methods manually by dissecting genitalia of adults and found their genger was as same as what we examined the sex of pupae and adults using the morphological methods.

Abstract:Ofthe four recognized Maculinea species that occur in Europe, three (M. teleius, M. nausitlzous, and M. alcon) are found on damp meadows, and may co-occur; sometimes their larval instars even occupy the same host ant nest. It is, therefore, important to be able to distinguish between the caterpillars of these species for effective conservation. We present the morphology of the larvae and pupae of these three species, and a simple key to their identification. Inter-specific differences among larvae and pupae, and within-species differences among larval instars, are underlined in order to enable their proper identification. The length, colour and distribution of bristles are considered the best features for species and instar identification. The morphology ofthe described species is compared with that of the other European species, M. arion.

Abstract:Observed and compared the morphological characters of various instars of Encyrtus sasakii Ishii parasitized in Eulecanium kuwanai Kanda. Microphotographs were taken of the bodies. Study shows that: Encyrtus sasakii Ishii reproduces annually and overwinters as pupa in their host. Besides the individual differences resulting from development, the 1st and 2nd instar larvae have long breath pedicles in the end of abdomen, and with the larva molting during development, the exuvia accumulate at the end of the body, form a hollow sac called caudal sac that cover the breath pedicle during 3rd and 4th instar larvae. The scutulis of females are yellow, and foreside of wings is light fumed with a dark blotch covered by dense black thick hairs. While the males are black brown, the wing is light in color without a dark blotch.

Abstract:Morphological features of larvae and pupae of twelve species of Simulium (Simulium) from Korea are investigated and redescribed. Detailed descriptions of immature stages of each species are provided with photographs. For the Korean members of subgenus Simulium, combinations of the following characteristics can be used to separate them from other Korean subgenera: larval abdomen without a pair of conical-shaped ventral tubercles; postgenal cleft variously shaped, viz., miter shaped, spearhead, bullet shaped or triangular; rectal papillae 3 simple lobe or compound lobes; pupal gill of 6-16 filaments; cocoon shoe, boot or slipper shaped; and head trichomes 3 pairs (1 facial+2 frontal). Habitat information and other ecological aspects of each species are provided. Updated keys to larvae and pupae of the Korean species of the subgenus Simulium are also provided to facilitate species identification. Taxonomic treatment based on external morphologies of larvae and pupae of Korean species of the subgenus Simulium are focused and included in this study. To understand their interspecific relationships, phylogenetic analyses using multiple data from molecule, morphology, and ecology are warranted in future research. Also continued exploration for new character systems is needed to establish more stable boundaries for subgenus and species delimitations.

Abstract:The genera Eumerus and Merodon (Syrphidae: Merodontini) form together the most speciose grouping of hoverflies in the Palaearctic Region. However, little is known about the morphology and biology of their larvae. The few larvae of Eumerus and Merodon that have been uncovered are phytophagous in underground organs of plants (some Eumerus and all Merodon) or saprophagous in a variety of plants' parts (the reminder of Eumerus). In this study, the second larval stage (L2) of Eumerus lyneborgi Ricarte & Hauser, 2020 and both the larva (L2) and puparium of Merodon constans (Rossi, 1794) are described for the first time. Larvae of E. lyneborgi were found in a decaying stem of Cyphostemma juttae (Dinter & Gilg) Desc., 1960 (Vitaceae) in Namibia (Africa), while larvae of M. constans were collected in bulbs of Leucojum vernum Linnaeus, 1753, (Amaryllidaceae) in France (Europe). Morphology of the immature forms was studied by observation and imaging with stereomicroscopy and scanning electron microscopy. The head skeleton of E. lyneborgi larvae was found to be of the filter feeding type, i.e., in accordance with a saprophagous trophic regime, while that of M. constans was typically phytophagous. Variability in certain characters of the M. constans early stages is described and discussed in relation to the adult form and molecular information published in literature. An updated identification key to all known third larval stages/puparia of Merodon is provided.

Abstract:Diadromus collaris (Gravenhorst) is an important pupal parasitoid of the diamondback moth, Plutella xylostella (L.), a major insect pest of cruciferous vegetables worldwide. We studied the development of immature stage of D. collaris by dissecting parasitized hosts in the laboratory at 25 +/- 1 degrees C and 50-80% relative humidity. The results show that all immature stages complete their development within the same host in 11 approximate to 12 d. The egg is hymenopteriform and appears to be anhydropic. There are four larval instars. The first instar is transparent with a sclerotized rectangular chitinous head capsule and distinct mandibles. Head capsule of the second instar turns into more isosceles trapezium-shaped. The third instar looks similar to the second instar but proportionally much larger. The sclerization and dimension of the fourth instar increases significantly. The pupa is a typical exarate form and lacks a cocoon. All life history was fully documented with detailed photomicrographs. Our study will be useful for understanding the physiological interactions between D. collaris and P. xylostella.

Abstract:Rhizotrogini are one of the most typical phytophagous scarab beetles, named primarily for their larvae attacking plant roots. Miridiba trichophora is the most widely distributed species of its genus. Its larvae are the main harmful stage and the primary target for control efforts. However, identifying M. trichophora larvae in the field is difficult due to the serious lag in larval classification work. In this study, the larvae of M. trichophora were obtained through rearing and observed using light and scanning electron microscopy. The larvae of M. trichophora are peculiar for the labrum possessing two curved horizonal ridges, the epipharynx equipped with 14 heli and a proplegmatium, the raster furnished with numerous prominent setae pointing the inconspicuous palidia, and the spiracles on the seven- and eighth abdominal segments being comparative larger than the other abdominal spiracles.

Abstract:Morphology of immature stages of the citrus borer (Agrilus auriventris Saunders) was studied in details both in field and in the laboratory using Leica MZ 16A stereo microscope with Leica IM 1000 system. The results showed that eggs were creamy white when first laid, but they became yellow and wizened with age. Before hatching, white and waxen outer layer and yellow inner layer were derived from the chorion; during hatching, the larva bored directly into phloem from the bottom part of the egg adhered to the bark with sawdust_like dejecta in the chorion. The shape of larval urogomphi and the width of peristoma varied with increase of instar, and the last-instar larva made a elliptic cell in the xylem with its body folded from head to tail with a ratio of 3∶7. A prepupal stage appeared before pupation; when the pupae aged, their body turned yellow and compound eyes became rufous from creamy white, and then, a status with yellow body, rufous compound eyes and black mouthpart appeared. Before eclosion, the whole pupa became black; during eclosion, exuvia cracked as the expand the adult body. After the fore wings became black and the dorsal aspect of the abdomen blue, the adult gained all adult characters. This study further confirmed that the larvae of this beetle had 5 instars.

Abstract:Abstract So far, there has been no information of the pre-imaginal stages in the well-preserved fossil record of the Mecoptera. The first and well-preserved mecopteran larva was discovered in Eocene Baltic amber. The application of synchrotron X-ray microtomography enabled the reconstruction of the body structure with high accuracy, providing a comprehensive set of morphological data that classical stereoscopic microscopy could not capture. The larva is eruciform, with distinct segmentation of the body. All the most important morphological structures are documented, including the chaetotaxy system. Shape of antenna and annulated processes on the abdominal segments point to the third/four stage of development. There is no doubt that the larva belongs to Panorpidae, the most abundant family of extant Mecoptera. The morphological characters point to the closest affinity to larvae of Cerapanorpa and Panorpa but the fossil larva cannot be assigned to any extant genus of Panorpidae. Based on the results of synchrotron X-ray microtomography, it is possible to discuss the assignement of this larva to a lower systematic level than the family, and draw conclusions about the nature of the habitat preferences of Eocene panorpid.

Abstract:Lasiocampidae belongs to superfamily Lasiocampoidea and contains more than a thousand species nearly distributed worldwide. Despite the great species richness and wide distribution, this group has internal phylogenetic relationships still little explored and with few studies on the morphology and biology of its immatures. This study describes the immature stages of the neotropical species Tolype medialis (Jones, 1912), focusing on the morphology and natural history. The eggs of T. medialis are oviposited freely inside a conical structure, and the larvae showed gregarious behavior in all instars. The seventh and eighth instar bear a pair of abdominal rounded flattened reddish brown glands on the segments A1, A2, A7, and A8 that produce a wax-like secretion that covers the pupae and the internal walls of the cocoon. In order to add information to the Lasiocampidae family, we compare and discuss these and other traits from the morphology and natural history of T. medialis immatures.

Abstract:Abstract First instar larvae of the genera Hoplacephala Macquart, 1846 and Lamprometopia Macquart, 1846 are described for the first time, along with the first instar larva of an Afrotropical species of the genus Phylloteles Loew, 1844. Their morphology is analyzed using a combination of various microscopy techniques, confirming their close phylogenetic affinity with other members of the tribe Sarcotachinini. Substantial morphological differences are observed between the investigated genera, as well as in comparison to other known larvae of Miltogramminae. Noteworthy unique character states are identified in the shape of the cephaloskeleton, the sculpture of the integument, and the shape of the papilla of the thoracic and abdominal segments. The larva of Hoplacephala sp. stands out as the most peculiar, featuring a massive cephaloskeleton, integument armoured by cuticular scales, and modification of body papillae into fleshy processes. The first instar larva of Phylloteles picifrons Pape, 1985 possesses a large, bladder-like structure with unknown function dorsally on the first thoracic segment. All documented larvae are characterized by a maxillary palpus forming a distinct protuberance with elongated second sensillum basiconicum and the absence of a dorsal bridge of the cephaloskeleton. This last character state indicates a parasitic or parasitoid life history for all studied taxa.

Abstract:The mature larvae of the following fourteen Rhinusa species are described and illustrated: Rhinusa antirrhini (Paykull, 1800), R. asellus (Gravenhorst, 1807), R. collina (Gyllenhal, 1813), R. eversmanni (Rosenschoeld, 1838), R. florum (Rubsaamen, 1895), R. herbarum (H. Brisout de Barneville, 1862), R. incana (Kirsch, 1881), R. linariae (Panzer, 1796), R. melas (Boheman, 1838), R. neta (Germar, 1821), R. pilosa (Gyllenhal, 1838), R. rara Toševski & Caldara, 2015, R. tetra (Fabricius, 1792), and R. vestita (Germar, 1821). The pupae of thirteen of them (except R. incana ) were also described. The comparison of larval morphological characters and plant preferences provides evidence supporting the existence of different species groups previously established according to a phylogenetic analysis based on adult morphological characters. The following diagnostic attributes distinguishing the genus Rhinusa are highlighted. For the larvae: (1) pronotal shield indistinct; (2) thoracic prodorsal fold small or even vestigial; (3) abdominal postdorsal folds (especially of segments III–VII) high or even in the form of conical protuberances; (4) cuticle of abdominal segments densely covered with asperities; (5) cuticle without dark spots or dark pigmentation; (6) head suboval, rarely round; (7) labrum usually with 2 als ; (8) des 1 short or absent, rarely elongated; and (9) fs 1 -3 usually absent or minute. For the pupae: (1) body stout; (2) head protuberances always present; (3) pronotal protuberances (if present), separated at bases of the pronotum, always wider than higher; (4) abdominal protuberance usually present, wide or round; (5) femora usually with a single fes ; and (6) urogomphi short or vestigial. Keys to the larvae and pupae described here are provided. All the characters used for identification are illustrated by photographs or drawings. Biological and distribution data, including new information, are provided for all the species studied.

Abstract:The dependence on adult female morphology for the determination of soft scale insect species (Hemiptera: Coccomorpha: Coccidae) creates several problems. In this paper, various nymphal stages of soft scale insects from the Ankara district of Türkiye and Israel, belonging to Coccidae: subfamily Eulecaniinae, namely Eulecanium cerasorum (Cockerell), E. ciliatum (Douglas), E. tiliae (Linnaeus) , Paleolecanium bituberculatum (Signoret) , Physokermes piceae (Schrank) and Rhodoccus perornatus (Cockerell & Parrott) were studied. The morphology of all the nymphal stages of these species is described and illustrated, and identification keys are provided to each instar. The results show that nymphal stages can be used to accurately identify soft scale insect species.

Abstract:The morphological ontogeny of Zachvatkinibates svanhovdi A. Seniczak & S. Seniczak, 2023 is described and illustrated. The juveniles of this species are light brown with slightly darker colour on the prodorsum, gastronotal shield, surrounding of gla opening, and legs. The larva has 12 pairs of gastronotal setae, most are of medium size and barbed; the nymphs have 15 pairs, most are short and smooth. In all juveniles, the setae of c-series are inserted on unsclerotized integument. In the larva, the pygidial shield is absent but, in the nymphs, the gastronotal shield is present and the setae p2 and p3 are inserted on unsclerotized integument. In the larva, a humeral organ is absent but is present in the nymphs.

Abstract:Abstract The microstructure of immature insect forms plays a crucial role in systematics, especially in inferring phylogenetic relationships and designating the morphological basis for taxonomic units. However, the microstructure of longhorn beetle larvae and pupae is poorly understood, owing to difficulties in obtaining them and technical limitations. Among 90 larvae and 80 pupae collected and photographed, 31 larvae and 15 pupae remained unidentified after morphological and bionomical evidence-based identification. Cytochrome c oxidase I sequences were amplified successfully from 68 larvae and 59 pupae. Molecular identification using tree-based analysis identified 28 of 31 undetermined larvae (90.3%) and 14 of 15 undetermined pupae (93.3%) to the species level. We highlight the usefulness of DNA barcoding in identifying immature forms of cerambycid beetles and filling gaps in public databases. This study also demonstrates how microstructure can clarify the morphological basis of polyphyletic taxa on the phylogeny and emphasizes the significance of the microstructure of immature stages in longhorn beetle systematics.

Abstract:In the present study, a total of 30 species of Phyllonorycter Hübner, 1822 (Lepidoptera: Gracillariidae: Lithocolletinae) in Korea are recognized and enumerated. Among them, two species ( Phyllonorycter phallustenuis sp. nov. and P. daehana sp. nov. ) are newly described to science. In addition, nine species are reported for the first time for the country: P. ginnalae (Ermolaev, 1981), P. jezoniella (Matsumura, 1931), P. lonicerae (Kumata, 1963), P. nigristella (Kumata, 1957), P. ostryae (Kumata, 1963), P. reduncata (Ermolaev, 1986), P. sorbicola (Kumata, 1963), P. tritorrhecta (Meyrick, 1935), and P. zelkovae (Kumata, 1963). Detailed descriptions and illustrations of both adults and genitalia of the new species are provided.
