Abstract:The oriental armyworm, Mythimna separata (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) is a harmful pest which causes heavy loss in agricultural crops. Sex identification of M. separata is very important for understanding the biology and management of this pest. Development of fast and convenient methods to identify M. separata female and male is the necessary prerequisite for conducting gender-related studies. In this study, new methods to differentiate sex of M. separata at pupal and adult stages were investigated. Our results showed that posterior abdominal segments containing genital organs which are morphological traits to differentiate female and male. Genital openings are important characters for the female and male pupae differentiation. For female pupa, it locates on the ventral side of eighth and ninth abdominal segments and appears as a visible longitudinal suture; for male pupa, it locates on the ventral side of the ninth abdominal segment and appears as a short slit surrounded by a pair of visible semicircular lumps. Bristle numbers are another indicator for sex differentiation of adults. Each female has three-bristled frenulum and each male has one bristled-frenulum near the base of hind wing of each side of moth body. We confirmed the two sex differentiation methods manually by dissecting genitalia of adults and found their genger was as same as what we examined the sex of pupae and adults using the morphological methods.

Abstract:Korean pine plantations in Heilongjiang Province were severely damaged by some species of Dioryctria (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae). These species have similar feature and characteristics so that they were easy to be confounded. To clarify biological and ecological characteristics as well as the damage of these species,we carried out an investigation combined with laboratory experiments for identifying them. It was found that there mainly were two species,i. e. D. sylvestrella and D. abietella attacking Korean pine cone. The detailed biological,ecological and damage characteristics of the sibling species were described. The result showed that only one larve of D. sylvestrella was usually in one cone,and the larva could transfer from a cone to a twig for further damage,and the attacked cones produced much more turpentine without rotting. However,one cone was attacked by several larvae of D. abietella,and the larvae did not transfer from cone to twig for futher damage,and the damaged cones by the species were usually rotten.

Abstract:Dioryctria sylvestrella (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae) is a destructive borer pest on Korean pine (Pinus koraiensis) indigenous to northeastern China. The antennal sensilla of D. sylvestrella were examined by scanning electron microscopy to understand the behavioral ecology of this insect pest. Both the male and female antennae are filiform, and each consists of a scape, a pedicel, and a flagellum. D. sylvestrella is characterized by sexual dimorphism. Only the male antennae present two deeply grooved thumblike protuberances on the crest surfaces of their fourth and fifth flagellomeres, respectively. These structures have never been reported for any other Pyralidae. Eight different types of sensilla with unique bioecological functions were detected on the antennae of both sexes. There may be structure–location–function relationships for these sensilla, and most of them are involved in communication between the insect and the host plant, mate detection, and oviposition site selection.

Abstract:Conogethes pinicolalis has long been considered as a Pinaceae-feeding type of the yellow peach moth, C. punctiferalis, in Korea. In this study, the divergence of C. pinicolalis from the fruit-feeding moth C. punctiferalis was analyzed in terms of morphology, ecology, and genetics. C. pinicolalis differs from C. punctiferalis in several morphological features. Through field observation, we confirmed that pine trees are the host plants for the first generation of C. pinicolalis larvae, in contrast to fruit-feeding C. punctiferalis larvae. We successfully reared C. pinicolalis larvae to adults by providing them pine needles as a diet. From a genetic perspective, the sequences of mitochondrial COI of these two species substantially diverged by an average of 5.46%; moreover, phylogenetic analysis clearly assigned each species to an independent clade. On the other hand, nuclear EF1α showed a lower sequence divergence (2.10%) than COI. Overall, EF1α-based phylogenetic analysis confirmed each species as an independent clade, but a few haplotypes of EF1α indicated incomplete lineage sorting between these two species. In conclusion, our results demonstrate that C. pinicolalis is an independent species according to general taxonomic criteria; however, analysis of the EF1α sequence revealed a short divergence time.

Abstract:Studying the reproductive attributes of pests is central to understanding their life cycle history and in crafting management strategies to regulate, if not bring down, their population below threshold levels. In this article, the morphology of the male reproductive tract, topology of the spermatozoa, and salient features of spermiogenesis in the Chinese white pine beetle, Dendroctonus armandi Tsai and Li was studied to provide baseline information for further pest management studies. Results showed that male reproductive tract of this species differs from those documented in other Coleopterans by having 20 testicular tubules in each testis and the presence of two types of accessory glands. The spermatozoon is seen having peculiar characteristics such as an "h"-shaped acrosomal vesicle with a "puff"-like expansion, one centriole, one large spongy body, and two accessory bodies. Despite with some morphological differences of the male reproductive organ, spermatogenesis in this organism is similar to other Coleopterans. Overall, detailed studies regarding the components of the primary male reproductive organ of this beetle species would expand the knowledge on the less-understood biology of Coleopteran pests and would help in designing regulatory measures to conserve endemic and indigenous pine trees in China.

Abstract:The morphology of newly hatched larvae of the important parasitoid beetle Dastarcus helophoroides (Coleoptera: Bothrideridae) was examined by scanning electron microscopy. This study examined the morphological structures of the cephalic, the thoracic, and abdominal regions of newly hatched larvae, and the distribution of sensilla on these structures. Sensilla chaetica and sensilla styloconica were identified on the maxillae, labium and antenna, sensilla chaetica were identified on the labrum and mandible, sensilla basiconica, Bohm's bristles and sensilla chaetica were found in the thoracic region, and sensilla basiconica were found encircling the body on all abdominal segments. In addition, our comparative morphological observations found no evidence of sexual dimorphism in newly hatched larvae in terms of shape, structure, sensilla distribution or typology.

Abstract:Ofthe four recognized Maculinea species that occur in Europe, three (M. teleius, M. nausitlzous, and M. alcon) are found on damp meadows, and may co-occur; sometimes their larval instars even occupy the same host ant nest. It is, therefore, important to be able to distinguish between the caterpillars of these species for effective conservation. We present the morphology of the larvae and pupae of these three species, and a simple key to their identification. Inter-specific differences among larvae and pupae, and within-species differences among larval instars, are underlined in order to enable their proper identification. The length, colour and distribution of bristles are considered the best features for species and instar identification. The morphology ofthe described species is compared with that of the other European species, M. arion.

Abstract:Dendrolimus superans (Lepidoptera: Lasiocampidae) and Lymantria dispar (Lepidoptera: Lymantriidae) are two important forest defoliators in northeast China, with the former being a specialist on Larix spp. and the latter being a generalist feeding on >500 species of plants. The morphology and ultrastructure of antennal sensilla of both male and female D. superans and L. dispar were examined using scanning electron microscopy (SEM). In both sexes of D. superans, the following five types of antennal sensilla were found: sensilla trichoidea, s. chaetica, s. coeloconica, s. gemmiformia, and s. basiconica. In males of L. dispar, six types of antennal sensilla: sensilla trichoidea, s. chaetica, s. coeloconica, s. basiconica, s. styloconica, and s. auricillica, were identified. In addition to the six types found in males, a seventh type of sensilla, s. squamiform, was only detected on L. dispar female antennae. For s. chaetica of D. superans, a unique ultrastructure of sub-branches that have one branch, two branches, and three branches was observed on their tips, which has not yet been reported on other insects. s. styloconica, s. auricillica, and s. squamiform, not found in the specialist D. superans, may be related to the euryphagy of L. dispar. Potential functionalities of these sensilla were discussed with reference to moth feeding habits, and their morphology, distribution, and ultrastructures on both species.

Abstract:Heortia vitessoides Moore, 1885 (Lepidoptera: Crambidae) is an economically important lepidopteran pest that caused severe damage to the plantation area of Aquilaria sinensis (Lour.) Gilg, 1825 (Thymelaeaceae), resulting in extensive defoliation of the trees during an epidemic. In this study, we used scanning electron microscopy (SEM) to analyze the external morphology and ultrastructure of sensilla on various body parts of H. vitessoides. Specifically, seven, four, four, and five types of sensilla were found, respectively, on the antennae, proboscis, labial palps, and legs. We described the types, distributions, and sexual dimorphism of these sensilla on antennae, and found that the number and size of sensilla differed significantly between males and females. This study provides crucial information for future investigations into the function of these sensilla in H. vitessoides.

Abstract:The carpenter moth Eogystia sibirica (Alpheraky) (Lepidoptera: Cossidae) is a serious pest of the garden asparagus Asparagus officinalis (family Liliaceae) in northern China, with its larvae boring in the stem and roots, frequently causing significant damage to the plant. All the life stages of the pest, including egg, larva, pupa and adult, are described and illustrated in detail. The ovoid egg is covered with a reticulate meshwork of ridges on the chorion. The eruciform larva possesses only three stemmata on each side of the head; the reduced abdominal prolegs on segments III-VI each bear 35-55 uniordinal crochets arranged in two transverse bands; the short anal prolegs each bear five to seven uniordinal crochets in a transverse band. The pupa is adecticous and obtect, without cremaster. The reduction of larval stemmata and the invagination of the adult pterosterna are briefly discussed.

Abstract:[Aim] Panorpidae,the largest family of Mecoptera,are important ecological indicators for environments.The immature stages of Panorpidae,however,are insufficiently studied so far mainly due to their strict ecological requirements and rearing difficulties.[Methods] The immature stages (including egg,larva,and pupa) of the scorpionfly Panorpa macrostyla Hua were studied biologically and morphologically using light and scanning electron microscopy.[Results] P.macrostyla is a univoltine insect,completing one generation per year.The adults appear from late June to early August.The egg is ellipsoid,with a raised reticulation on the chorion.The larva is eruciform,with three pairs of foursegmented thoracic legs and eight pairs of unsegmented prolegs.The larval head is strongly sclerotized,bearing a pair of compound eyes each comprising 26 ommatidia,a pair of 3-segmented antennae,and the mandibulate mouthparts.The larval trunk is cylindrical,bearing nine pairs of dorsal processes on the first nine abdominal segments and a single dorsal process on the tenth abdominal segment.A protrusible sucker is present on the terminal abdominal segment.The larval respiratory system is of the peripneustic type,having a pair of prothoracic and eight pairs of abdominal spiracles.The larval stage consists of four instars,and overwinters as prepupal stage within a pupal cavity in the soil.The pupa is exarate and decticous,morphologically similar to the adult.The male pupa has enlarged genital bulb on its caudal end.[Conclusion] The larvae of P.macrostyla are morphologically different from those of Neopanorpa,Sinopanorpa,Dicerapanorpa,and Cerapanorpa.However,P.macrostyla larvae differ from its congeners by the apical-expanded setae of L2 and SO2 on the head capsule,and D2,SD1,SD2 on the caudal segment,implying that the generic status of P.macrostyla needs further research.

Abstract:The mature larvae of the following fourteen Rhinusa species are described and illustrated: Rhinusa antirrhini (Paykull, 1800), R. asellus (Gravenhorst, 1807), R. collina (Gyllenhal, 1813), R. eversmanni (Rosenschoeld, 1838), R. florum (Rubsaamen, 1895), R. herbarum (H. Brisout de Barneville, 1862), R. incana (Kirsch, 1881), R. linariae (Panzer, 1796), R. melas (Boheman, 1838), R. neta (Germar, 1821), R. pilosa (Gyllenhal, 1838), R. rara Toševski & Caldara, 2015, R. tetra (Fabricius, 1792), and R. vestita (Germar, 1821). The pupae of thirteen of them (except R. incana ) were also described. The comparison of larval morphological characters and plant preferences provides evidence supporting the existence of different species groups previously established according to a phylogenetic analysis based on adult morphological characters. The following diagnostic attributes distinguishing the genus Rhinusa are highlighted. For the larvae: (1) pronotal shield indistinct; (2) thoracic prodorsal fold small or even vestigial; (3) abdominal postdorsal folds (especially of segments III–VII) high or even in the form of conical protuberances; (4) cuticle of abdominal segments densely covered with asperities; (5) cuticle without dark spots or dark pigmentation; (6) head suboval, rarely round; (7) labrum usually with 2 als ; (8) des 1 short or absent, rarely elongated; and (9) fs 1 -3 usually absent or minute. For the pupae: (1) body stout; (2) head protuberances always present; (3) pronotal protuberances (if present), separated at bases of the pronotum, always wider than higher; (4) abdominal protuberance usually present, wide or round; (5) femora usually with a single fes ; and (6) urogomphi short or vestigial. Keys to the larvae and pupae described here are provided. All the characters used for identification are illustrated by photographs or drawings. Biological and distribution data, including new information, are provided for all the species studied.

Abstract:Twenty-one individuals of Hydropsyche from An-hui and Zhe-jiang Provinces, China, were examined and their DNA barcode sequences were generated and analyzed. The larvae and males of H. arion, H. columnata, H. simulata, and H. trifora were associated by mtCOI gene sequences. The larvae of H. arion, H. columnata, and H. trifora are described in detail and their diagnostic photographs are provided. Character photographs of the H. simulata larva are also presented. A key to 5 th instar larvae of 15 species of Chinese Hydropsyche is provided.
