Abstract:The oriental armyworm, Mythimna separata (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) is a harmful pest which causes heavy loss in agricultural crops. Sex identification of M. separata is very important for understanding the biology and management of this pest. Development of fast and convenient methods to identify M. separata female and male is the necessary prerequisite for conducting gender-related studies. In this study, new methods to differentiate sex of M. separata at pupal and adult stages were investigated. Our results showed that posterior abdominal segments containing genital organs which are morphological traits to differentiate female and male. Genital openings are important characters for the female and male pupae differentiation. For female pupa, it locates on the ventral side of eighth and ninth abdominal segments and appears as a visible longitudinal suture; for male pupa, it locates on the ventral side of the ninth abdominal segment and appears as a short slit surrounded by a pair of visible semicircular lumps. Bristle numbers are another indicator for sex differentiation of adults. Each female has three-bristled frenulum and each male has one bristled-frenulum near the base of hind wing of each side of moth body. We confirmed the two sex differentiation methods manually by dissecting genitalia of adults and found their genger was as same as what we examined the sex of pupae and adults using the morphological methods.

Abstract:Tripylina zhejiangensis n. sp. is described and illustrated from Zhejiang province, eastern China. It has a robust body, smooth cuticle with numerous pores, two small subventral teeth in the posterior part of the large triangular dorsal tooth, one ventral-median seta in the cervical region and a pair of setae on the tail. Females are characterized by a body length of 1325-1573 µm, a = 23.3-31.2, b = 5.5-6.6, c = 13.6-19.4, c'= 2.7-3.6 and V = 61.1-68.1%. Small subunit (SSU) and D2/D3 expansion segments of large subunit (LSU) of ribosomal DNA were used to analyze the phylogenetic relationships of sequenced species in the genus Tripylina. Tripylina zhejiangensis n. sp. varied significantly from other related nematodes both in morphological characterizations and phylogenetic analyses.

Abstract:According to the morphological characters and morphometrics,three species in genus Hirschmanniella were identified.They were H.oryzae,H.mucronata and H.gracilis.Some morphometrics of H.oryzae and H.mucronata varied slightly from the original descriptions of type specimens,most of other morphometric data were within the reference value range.Compared to the original descriptions of type specimen,the data of H.gracilis were smaller.This was the first report of H.gracilis in Zhejiang Province,eastern China.

Abstract:Opatrini Brullé, 1832 is the most species-rich tribe in the subfamily Blaptinae Leach, 1815. In this study, a preliminary phylogenetic relationship among 14 species of five genera of Opatrini is hypothesized based on mitochondrial gene ( COI ) fragment. Based on the phylogenetic topology and the results of three molecular species delimitation analyses, three larval specimens are assessed for the adults. Additionally, the larvae of these three species are described and illustrated: Gonocephalum bilineatum (Walker, 1858), Gonocephalum gracile (Bates, 1879), and Mesomorphus latiusculus Chatanay, 1917.

Abstract:Ofthe four recognized Maculinea species that occur in Europe, three (M. teleius, M. nausitlzous, and M. alcon) are found on damp meadows, and may co-occur; sometimes their larval instars even occupy the same host ant nest. It is, therefore, important to be able to distinguish between the caterpillars of these species for effective conservation. We present the morphology of the larvae and pupae of these three species, and a simple key to their identification. Inter-specific differences among larvae and pupae, and within-species differences among larval instars, are underlined in order to enable their proper identification. The length, colour and distribution of bristles are considered the best features for species and instar identification. The morphology ofthe described species is compared with that of the other European species, M. arion.

Abstract:In the present study, a total of 30 species of Phyllonorycter Hübner, 1822 (Lepidoptera: Gracillariidae: Lithocolletinae) in Korea are recognized and enumerated. Among them, two species ( Phyllonorycter phallustenuis sp. nov. and P. daehana sp. nov. ) are newly described to science. In addition, nine species are reported for the first time for the country: P. ginnalae (Ermolaev, 1981), P. jezoniella (Matsumura, 1931), P. lonicerae (Kumata, 1963), P. nigristella (Kumata, 1957), P. ostryae (Kumata, 1963), P. reduncata (Ermolaev, 1986), P. sorbicola (Kumata, 1963), P. tritorrhecta (Meyrick, 1935), and P. zelkovae (Kumata, 1963). Detailed descriptions and illustrations of both adults and genitalia of the new species are provided.

Abstract:Morphological features of larvae and pupae of twelve species of Simulium (Simulium) from Korea are investigated and redescribed. Detailed descriptions of immature stages of each species are provided with photographs. For the Korean members of subgenus Simulium, combinations of the following characteristics can be used to separate them from other Korean subgenera: larval abdomen without a pair of conical-shaped ventral tubercles; postgenal cleft variously shaped, viz., miter shaped, spearhead, bullet shaped or triangular; rectal papillae 3 simple lobe or compound lobes; pupal gill of 6-16 filaments; cocoon shoe, boot or slipper shaped; and head trichomes 3 pairs (1 facial+2 frontal). Habitat information and other ecological aspects of each species are provided. Updated keys to larvae and pupae of the Korean species of the subgenus Simulium are also provided to facilitate species identification. Taxonomic treatment based on external morphologies of larvae and pupae of Korean species of the subgenus Simulium are focused and included in this study. To understand their interspecific relationships, phylogenetic analyses using multiple data from molecule, morphology, and ecology are warranted in future research. Also continued exploration for new character systems is needed to establish more stable boundaries for subgenus and species delimitations.

Abstract:A taxonomic study of Spilonota Stephens, 1834, in Korea is conducted, and S . prognathana (Snellen, 1883) which had previously been merged with S . albicana (Motschulsky, 1866) is separated again. Additionally, as a result of research based on materials from Incheon National University two new species; S . samseong Choi, Bae & Nasu, S . laticucullusa Choi, Bae & Nasu proposed from Korea. The study provides brief descriptions of Spilonota species in Korea, with illustrations of the adult and genital morphology. Identification key for the known species reported from Korea is included.

L. securis sp. nov.; L. sinupenis sp. nov.; L. villosa sp. nov.; these species (except for L. baculifoliacea sp. nov.) having pubescence on the distal portion of aedeagus. A key to all the examined species of the ornata group in this study is provided. We try to improve our species delimitation by integrating the DNA sequences data with morphological information. The intra- and interspecific pairwise K-2P (Kimura's two-parameter) distances are summarized.

Abstract:The mature larvae of the following fourteen Rhinusa species are described and illustrated: Rhinusa antirrhini (Paykull, 1800), R. asellus (Gravenhorst, 1807), R. collina (Gyllenhal, 1813), R. eversmanni (Rosenschoeld, 1838), R. florum (Rubsaamen, 1895), R. herbarum (H. Brisout de Barneville, 1862), R. incana (Kirsch, 1881), R. linariae (Panzer, 1796), R. melas (Boheman, 1838), R. neta (Germar, 1821), R. pilosa (Gyllenhal, 1838), R. rara Toševski & Caldara, 2015, R. tetra (Fabricius, 1792), and R. vestita (Germar, 1821). The pupae of thirteen of them (except R. incana ) were also described. The comparison of larval morphological characters and plant preferences provides evidence supporting the existence of different species groups previously established according to a phylogenetic analysis based on adult morphological characters. The following diagnostic attributes distinguishing the genus Rhinusa are highlighted. For the larvae: (1) pronotal shield indistinct; (2) thoracic prodorsal fold small or even vestigial; (3) abdominal postdorsal folds (especially of segments III–VII) high or even in the form of conical protuberances; (4) cuticle of abdominal segments densely covered with asperities; (5) cuticle without dark spots or dark pigmentation; (6) head suboval, rarely round; (7) labrum usually with 2 als ; (8) des 1 short or absent, rarely elongated; and (9) fs 1 -3 usually absent or minute. For the pupae: (1) body stout; (2) head protuberances always present; (3) pronotal protuberances (if present), separated at bases of the pronotum, always wider than higher; (4) abdominal protuberance usually present, wide or round; (5) femora usually with a single fes ; and (6) urogomphi short or vestigial. Keys to the larvae and pupae described here are provided. All the characters used for identification are illustrated by photographs or drawings. Biological and distribution data, including new information, are provided for all the species studied.

Abstract:In this article, the descriptions of four new enchytraeid species (Enchytraeidae, Clitellata) from Jeoksangsan (Deogyusan National Park, Korea) are presented: Decimodrilus bulbosus sp. n., Fridericia jeoksangsaniensis sp. n., Fridericia sphaericoides sp. n. and Mesenchytraeus globiferus sp. n. Validity of these new species was verified by comparative morphological and molecular taxonomic analyses (based on the ITS region, CO1 and H3 genes). Apart from the new species, 13 other enchytraeid species were recorded in the soil samples of Jeoksangsan. In addition, new reference sequences are provided for the previously described Fridericia seoraksani Christensen Dzsa-Farkas, 2012.

Abstract:Notocupes premeris sp. nov., is reported from the Lower Cretaceous (Albian) Jinju Formation, representing the first complete body fossil of Notocupes from the Korean Peninsula. The new species is characterized by the broad body shape (e.g., ventrite 5 about 1.8 times as wide as long), about 30 cells maximum per row on elytra, and the somewhat V-shaped anterior pronotal edge. Abstract:Tibetan Plateau is one of the most typical areas of biodiversity in the world because of its unique environmental and regional units, which breed unique biological communities and concentrate on many unique and rare wild animals and plants. Research on Chironomidae in the Tibetan Plateau is relatively weak. At present, the identification of Chironomidae species mainly depends on male adults, while identification of larvae and pupae is relatively difficult and there is less research on them.During the investigations of insect diversity in the Tibetan Plateau, larval and pupal stages of Orthocladius nitidoscutellatus Lundström, 1915 and Psectrocladius nevalis Akhrorov, 1977 were described and illustrated. Matching and identification of larval and pupal stages were based on DNA barcodes. Neighbour-joining trees were reconstructed, based on known Orthocladius and Psectrocladius COI DNA barcodes, respectively.
