Abstract:Macrocycle ligands have three or more donor sites. Selective replacement of skeleton carbon atoms by heteroatoms and vacancies in C60 could lead to various macrocycle ligands with a cage-shaped backbone. Theoretical calculations indicate that such C60 -based macrocycle ligands are as stable as C60 thermodynamically according to their similar HOMO-LUMO gaps. The synthesis of these ligands is a challenging task. Nevertheless important progresses have been reported. This concept article focuses on the structures of possible C60 -based macrocycle ligands and related synthetic results.

Abstract:By performing Friedel-Crafts reaction with a mixture of 1,3,5-tri(furan-2-yl) benzene (TFB) and acetone, we successfully synthesized a cylinder-shaped macrocycle. The isolated yield of 36% is relatively high, considering that twelve C-C bonds are formed simultaneously. The structure of this macrocycle was confirmed using H-1 NMR spectroscopy, mass spectrometry and X-ray crystallography. This macrocycle is able to recognize a variety of cationic guests driven by cation-dipole and CH-pi interactions.

Abstract:[Graphics]Six hydrogen-bonded shape-persistent aryl amide macrocycles have been prepared by using one-step and (for some) step-by-step approaches. From the one-step reactions, 3 + 3, 2 + 2, or even 1 + 1 macrocycles were obtained in modest to good yields. The reaction selectivity was highly dependent on the structures of the precursors. The X-ray structural analysis of two methoxyl-bearing macrocycles revealed intramolecular hydrogen bonding and weak intermolecular stacking interaction; no column-styled stacking structures were observed. The H-1 (DOSY) NMR, UV-vis, and fluorescent experiments indicated that the new rigidified macrocycles complex fullerenes or coronene in chloroform through intermolecular,pi-stacking interaction. The association constants of the corresponding 1: 1 complexes have been determined if the stacking was able to cause important fluorescent quenching of the macrocycles or coronene.

Abstract:Large methylazacalix[n]pyridines (n = 6-9) were synthesized effectively from the Pd-catalyzed macrocyclic fragment coupling reactions between alpha,omega-dibrominated and alpha,omega-diaminated linear oligomers. As macrocyclic host molecules, they formed a 1:1 complex with fullerenes C-60 and C-70 with association constants ranging from 3 x 10(4) to 1 x 10(5) M-1.

Abstract:This paper describes the synthesis of two series of rigid macrocycles from hydrogen bonding-induced folded aryl amide and hydrazone oligomers that bear two amines or one amine and one aldehyde. The diamines reacted with diacyl chloride to produce amide macrocycles, whereas the latter underwent self-coupling reactions to afford imine macrocycles. DFT calculations revealed that the new macrocycles possess rigid planar conformations and their cavity diameters were estimated to be 1.86 nm-2.75 nm. (C) 2014 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Abstract:Thanks to Pd(II)‐catalysis, an efficient synthesis of unsaturated macrocycles is achieved by [3+6+3+6] condensation of cyclic ethers with aryl α‐diazo‐β‐ketoesters. The presence of the electron‐rich aryl ester moieties forbids the use of dirhodium complexes as these diazo decomposition catalysts provoke unforeseen intermolecular C sp2 ‐H insertion reactions that derail the targeted reactivity. However, with Pd(acac) 2 , using high concentration conditions (1 M), a variety of 18‐membered macrocycles (16 examples) is afforded with both aryl and alkyl diazo reagents. Abstract:Disulfane-linked bisazacalix[n]pyridines (n=4, 7) were synthesized for the first time using a macrocyclic fragment coupling approach followed by post-macrocyclization photoreaction with ethanethioic acid and hydrolysis under basic conditions. Abstract:A 14-membered heterocycle is created on the C60 cage skeleton through a multistep procedure. Key steps involve repeated PCl5 -induced hydroxylamino N-O bond cleavage leading to insertion of nitrogen atoms, and also piperidine-induced peroxo O-O bond cleavage leading to insertion of oxygen atoms. The hetero atoms form one pyrrole, two pyran, and one diazepine rings in conjunction with the C60 skeleton carbon atoms. The fullerene-based macrocycle showed unique reactivities towards fluoride ion and copper salts.

Abstract:Synthesis, structure, and fullerene-binding property of azacalix[6]aromatics were systematically studied. By means of [3 + 3] and [2 + 2 + 2] fragment coupling protocols, a number of azacalix[6]aromatics containing different combinations of benzene, pyridine, and pyrimidine rings and various substituents on the bridging nitrogen atoms were synthesized conveniently in moderate to good yields. The resulting macrocycles adopt in the solid state symmetric and heavily distorted 1,3,5-alternate conformations depending on the aromatic building units, whereas, in solution, they exist as a mixture of conformers that undergo rapid interchanges relative to the NMR time scale. All macrocycles were able to form 1:1 complexes with C60 and C70 in toluene with the association constants up to 7.28 × 10(4) M(-1). In the crystalline state, azacalix[6]aromatics form complexes with C60 and C70 with 2:1, 1:1, and 1:2 stoichiometric ratios between host and guest. Azacalix[6]aromatics interact with fullerene by forming mainly the sandwich structure in which C60 or C70 is sandwiched by two macrocycles. X-ray molecular structures revealed that multiple π-π and CH-π interactions between concave azacalix[6]aromatics and convex fullerenes C60 and C70 contribute a joint driving force to the formation of host-guest complexes.
On-Surface Pseudo-High-Dilution Synthesis of Macrocycles: Principle and Mechanism

Abstract:Macrocycles have attracted much attention due to their specific "endless" topology, which results in extraordinary properties compared to related linear (open chain) molecules. However, challenges still remain in their controlled synthesis with well-defined constitution and geometry. Here, we report the successful application of the (pseudo-)high-dilution method to the conditions of on surface synthesis in ultrahigh vacuum. This approach leads to high yields (up to 84%) of cyclic hyperbenzene ([18]-honeycombene) via an Ullmann-type reaction from 4,4"-dibromo-meta-terphenyl (DMTP) as precursor on a Ag(111) surface. The mechanism of macrocycle formation was explored in detail using scanning tunneling microscopy and X-ray photoemission spectroscopy. We propose that the dominant pathway for hyperbenzene (MTP)(6) formation is the stepwise desilverization of an organometallic (MTP-Ag)(6) macrocycle, which forms via cyclization of (MTP-Ag)(6) chains under pseudo-high-dilution conditions. The high probability of cyclization on the stage of the organometallic phase results from the reversibility of the C-Ag bond. The case is different from that in solution, in which cyclization typically occurs on the stage of a covalently bonded open-chain precursor. This difference in the cyclization mechanism on a surface compared to that in solution stems mainly from the 2D confinement exerted by the surface template, which hinders the flipping of chain segments necessary for cyclization.

Abstract:This paper describes the synthesis of four aryl amide-based macrocycles through the 1 + 1 formation of two 1,2,3-triazole units by click chemistry. Two series of aryl amide-based precursors that bear two azide or acetylene units have been prepared. Intramolecular hydrogen bonding has been utilized to induce them to adopt a U-styled conformation, which remarkably promotes the macrocyclization of two structurally matched precursors.

Abstract:A triblock amphiphilic macrocycle consisting of a macrocyclic aromatic segment, a hydrophilic oligo(ethylene oxide) branch, and a hydrophobic alkyl dendron is successfully synthesized and characterized. The resulting cyclic amphiphile is observed to self-assemble into hollow double-layered capsules in aqueous solution, as confirmed by dynamic light scattering and cryogenic transmission electron microscopy investigations. The capsules are able to encapsulate hydrophobic guest molecules through aromatic interactions with high stability.

A possible mechanism involving thermoinduced single electron transfer of allylic amines and radical cycloaddition was proposed. Abstract:A novel class of cyclometalated macrocycles [(Cp*Ir)(2)(R-N=C-C(6)H(2)-C=N-R)(2)](2)(pyrazine)(2)·(OTf)(4) [R = Ph (4a), p-MeOC(6)H(4) (4b), p-MeC(6)H(4) (4c), p-ClC(6)H(4) (4d), Me (4e)]; [(Cp*Rh)(2)(R-N=C-C(6)H(2)-C=N-R)(2)](2)(pyrazine)(2)·(OTf)(4) [R = Ph (4a'), p-MeOC(6)H(4) (4b'), p-MeC(6)H(4) (4c')] and [(Cp*Ir)(2)(R-C=N-C(6)H(4)-N=C-R)(2)](2)(pyrazine)(2)·(OTf)(4) [R = Ph (5a), p-MeOC(6)H(4) (5b)] was stepwise constructed through the double-site C-H activation of aromatic bis-imine substrates. The structures of binuclear complexes and tetranuclear macrocycles were confirmed by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. Isomers were found both in binuclear species and macrocyclic complexes. Flexible substrates led to the existence of isomers for binuclear species, yet gave no isomers after macrocyclic constructions; rigid ones, in contrast, led to isomers only for macrocyclic species. The isomers of tetranuclear macrocycles were thermodynamically stable to reversible transformation on a scale of days. Robust bonding and a certain degree of rigidity were invoked to explain the existence of isomers. This is the first example, to our knowledge, in which coordinated macrocycles containing half-sandwich Cp*M (M = Ir, Rh) fragments have been constructed, without a dynamic reversible process.

Abstract:pi-Conjugated macrocycles have been highly attractive due to their challenging synthesis, fascinating aesthetic structure and unique physical and chemical properties. Although some progress has been made in synthesis, the study of pi-macrocycles with different structural characteristics and supramolecular interactions still faces major challenges. In this paper, two new single-bond linked macrocycles (MS-4T/MS-6T) were reported, and the corresponding vinyl-bridged heterocycloarenes (MF-4T/MF-6T) were synthesized by the periphery fusion strategy. Further studies have indicated that the structure of these four macrocycles is determined by both size and curvature, showing unique variations from nearly planar to bowl and then to saddle. Interestingly, the nearly planar MS-4T with a small size and the rigid saddle-shaped MF-6T show no obvious response to fullerenes C-60 or C-70, while the bowl-shaped MS-6T and MF-4T demonstrate a strong binding affinity towards fullerenes C-60 and C-70. What's more, two kinds of co-crystals with capsule-like configurations, MS-6T@C-60 and MS-6T@C-70, have been successfully obtained, among which the former shows a loose columnar arrangement while the latter displays a unique three-dimensional honeycomb arrangement that is extremely rare in supramolecular complexes. This work systematically studies the pi-conjugated macrocycles and provides a new idea for the development of novel host-guest systems and further multifunctional applications.

Abstract:We report the synthesis of macrocycles 1-6 via ring closing metathesis of dienes 7-12. Addition of chlorodicyclohexylborane to thermal and microwave assisted RCM of dienes 8 and 9 markedly improves the yield. The geometric isomers of macrocycles 1-3 and 5 have been assigned using X-ray crystallography and NMR.
