Abstract:By performing Friedel-Crafts reaction with a mixture of 1,3,5-tri(furan-2-yl) benzene (TFB) and acetone, we successfully synthesized a cylinder-shaped macrocycle. The isolated yield of 36% is relatively high, considering that twelve C-C bonds are formed simultaneously. The structure of this macrocycle was confirmed using H-1 NMR spectroscopy, mass spectrometry and X-ray crystallography. This macrocycle is able to recognize a variety of cationic guests driven by cation-dipole and CH-pi interactions.

Abstract:Monodisperse macrospirocyclic oligomers were prepared using self-condensation of the Friedel-Crafts reaction. Through the C-9s of the central fluorene units of four surrounding oligofluorenes, four carbazole units are connected in a series to form a macrocyclic core. These rodlike oligofluorenes form a rigid three-dimensional structure, affording the resulting macrocyclics a high steric hindrance for close interchain packing.

Abstract:Two o-carborane-hybridized macrocyclic arenes have been synthesized via Friedel-Crafts alkylation of carborane diaryl derivatives. The single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis clearly revealed their cavity structure and intermolecular interaction force. These novel macrocycles possessed aggregation-induced luminescence and intramolecular charge transfer properties. Moreover, the macrocycles exhibited significant selectivity towards nitro explosive compounds. This work provided a method for the synthesis of hybridized macrocyclic arenes.

Abstract:Macrocycles have attracted much attention due to their specific "endless" topology, which results in extraordinary properties compared to related linear (open chain) molecules. However, challenges still remain in their controlled synthesis with well-defined constitution and geometry. Here, we report the successful application of the (pseudo-)high-dilution method to the conditions of on surface synthesis in ultrahigh vacuum. This approach leads to high yields (up to 84%) of cyclic hyperbenzene ([18]-honeycombene) via an Ullmann-type reaction from 4,4"-dibromo-meta-terphenyl (DMTP) as precursor on a Ag(111) surface. The mechanism of macrocycle formation was explored in detail using scanning tunneling microscopy and X-ray photoemission spectroscopy. We propose that the dominant pathway for hyperbenzene (MTP)(6) formation is the stepwise desilverization of an organometallic (MTP-Ag)(6) macrocycle, which forms via cyclization of (MTP-Ag)(6) chains under pseudo-high-dilution conditions. The high probability of cyclization on the stage of the organometallic phase results from the reversibility of the C-Ag bond. The case is different from that in solution, in which cyclization typically occurs on the stage of a covalently bonded open-chain precursor. This difference in the cyclization mechanism on a surface compared to that in solution stems mainly from the 2D confinement exerted by the surface template, which hinders the flipping of chain segments necessary for cyclization.

Abstract:A novel and efficient Cu(I)/Ag(I)-mediated synergistic annulation reaction of [60]fullerene with diary-lethanones, benzoylacetonitriles, and beta-dicarbonyl compounds has been developed for the direct construction of diverse disubstituted dihydrofuran-fused [60]fullerene derivatives. This transformation exhibits a remarkably broad substrate scope and functional group tolerance and provides a useful method to a scarce class of fullerene derivatives.

Abstract:Steric crowding of the 3-position of tris(pyrazolyl)borate and -methane ligands has produced tetrahedral metal complexes with controlled reactivity. As an alternative, we propose to incorporate the tris(pyrazolyl)methane chelate in a macrobicyclic structure in order to create a cavity with well-defined dimensions and shape. Acid-catalyzed equilibration of excess of the new pyrazole 3-(1H-pyrazol-3-yl)benzenemethanethiol acetate with HC(3,5-Me(2)pz)(3) followed by hydrolysis affords a functionalized tris(pyrazolyl)methane, which reacts with 1,3,5-tris(bromomethyl)benzene in K(2)CO(3)/DMF to give the title compound. Abstract:Diiodoarenes (or dibromoarenes) reacted with diphenols, catalyzed by Cul/Fe(acac)(3) in the presence of K2CO3 in anhydrous DMSO at 110 degrees C for 7 days under nitrogen atmosphere, to afford macrocyclic aryl ethers effectively. To expand this methodology, a cyclic hepta(p-phenylene oxide) and cyclic deca(pphenylene oxide) were synthesized in one pot. Abstract:6-Acetoxy-4-alkenyl arenes undergo regio- and stereoselective intramolecular Friedel–Crafts reaction affording benzocycles in moderate to excellent yields in TFA/HOAc (3:1). It was observed that introduction of alkyls or phenyl group to the allylic acetate moiety facilitates the cyclization reaction. The optically active tricyclic (4bR,8aS)-4b,7,8,8a,9,10-hexahydrophenanthrene skeleton could also be easily obtained in excellent yields.

Abstract:pi-Conjugated macrocycles have been highly attractive due to their challenging synthesis, fascinating aesthetic structure and unique physical and chemical properties. Although some progress has been made in synthesis, the study of pi-macrocycles with different structural characteristics and supramolecular interactions still faces major challenges. In this paper, two new single-bond linked macrocycles (MS-4T/MS-6T) were reported, and the corresponding vinyl-bridged heterocycloarenes (MF-4T/MF-6T) were synthesized by the periphery fusion strategy. Further studies have indicated that the structure of these four macrocycles is determined by both size and curvature, showing unique variations from nearly planar to bowl and then to saddle. Interestingly, the nearly planar MS-4T with a small size and the rigid saddle-shaped MF-6T show no obvious response to fullerenes C-60 or C-70, while the bowl-shaped MS-6T and MF-4T demonstrate a strong binding affinity towards fullerenes C-60 and C-70. What's more, two kinds of co-crystals with capsule-like configurations, MS-6T@C-60 and MS-6T@C-70, have been successfully obtained, among which the former shows a loose columnar arrangement while the latter displays a unique three-dimensional honeycomb arrangement that is extremely rare in supramolecular complexes. This work systematically studies the pi-conjugated macrocycles and provides a new idea for the development of novel host-guest systems and further multifunctional applications.
Synthesis and Properties of A Graphene-Like Macrocycle Based on Tetraphenylethene

Abstract:In this work, tetraphenylethene macrocycles are selectively synthesized in one step from McMurry coupling reaction of 1,1-bis(4-phenylcarbonyl)-2,2-diphenylethene in 45% overall yield. A more planar cyclized compound can be obtained by oxidization of tetraphenylethene macrocycles with iron (III) chloride in nitromethane. Their unusual optical properties and electrical properties are explored. The measured mobilities are 0.7022 and 0.0055 cm(2) V-1 s(-1), respectively. The decomposition temperatures are also measured by thermal gravimetric analysis as, respectively 342 degrees C and 455 degrees C, indicating good thermal stabilities. The understanding of the structure and properties will benefit to the chemical synthesis of graphene. (C) 2014 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Abstract:Biological cyclization is highly efficient, and this can be attributed to the conformation of the backbone of the biopolymer. Taking advantage of metal-coordination geometry, we developed a method for conformation-directed polymerization cyclization through rational design of metal carbonyl monomers that could be used to produce cyclic macromolecules, even in bulk. P FpR [P Fp=(PPh2 (CH2 )3 Cp)Fe(CO)2 with the phosphine group tethered on the cyclopentadiene (Cp) ring; R=CH3 or (CH2 )5 CH3 ] was designed and synthesized for migration insertion polymerization to generate P(P FpR) with the polymer backbone containing Cp-Fe bonds. Growth of the backbone led to a cyclic conformation with close end-to-end distances, which facilitated the cyclization. This conformation-directed cyclization was attributed to the piano-stool metal-coordination geometry of the repeating units and the low rotational barrier of the Cp-Fe bonds in the backbone. The produced macrocycles, which contain a metal carbonyl coordination structure in their backbones, are rigid, unlike many organic macrocycles. The macrocycles thus have a large excluded volume. This new type of metal carbonyl macrocycle will be of interest as a building block for supramolecular chemistry and in the exploration of novel materials.

Abstract:Large methylazacalix[n]pyridines (n = 6-9) were synthesized effectively from the Pd-catalyzed macrocyclic fragment coupling reactions between alpha,omega-dibrominated and alpha,omega-diaminated linear oligomers. As macrocyclic host molecules, they formed a 1:1 complex with fullerenes C-60 and C-70 with association constants ranging from 3 x 10(4) to 1 x 10(5) M-1.

Abstract:A kind of o-carborane-based macrocycles were synthesized via oxidative coupling of acetyleneterminated o-carborane precursors. The single crystal X-ray diffraction analysis unambiguously revealed their unique porous supramolecular structures, which displayed micropore characteristics. Interestingly, the crystalline phase of macrocyclic CBMC-2 meets special structure parameters through non-covalent interaction. UV–vis, DSC and X-ray analysis indicated that the crystals of macrocycle CBMC-2 could undergo diacetylene topochemical polymerization inside solid by heating. It was confirmed by Raman spectroscopy and solid-state 13C NMR spectroscopy. This work provides a method for synthesizing carborane supramolecular polymers.

Abstract:Thanks to Pd(II)‐catalysis, an efficient synthesis of unsaturated macrocycles is achieved by [3+6+3+6] condensation of cyclic ethers with aryl α‐diazo‐β‐ketoesters. The presence of the electron‐rich aryl ester moieties forbids the use of dirhodium complexes as these diazo decomposition catalysts provoke unforeseen intermolecular C sp2 ‐H insertion reactions that derail the targeted reactivity. However, with Pd(acac) 2 , using high concentration conditions (1 M), a variety of 18‐membered macrocycles (16 examples) is afforded with both aryl and alkyl diazo reagents. Abstract:Rationally designed halogenated hydrocarbons are widely used building blocks to fabricate covalent-bonded carbon nanostructures on surfaces through a reaction pathway involving generation and dissociation of organometallic intermediates and irreversible covalent bond formation. Here, we provide a comprehensive picture of the on-surface-assisted homocoupling reaction of 1,3-bis(2-bromoethynyl)benzene on Au(111), aiming for the synthesis of graphdiyne nanostructures. Submolecular resolution scanning tunneling microscopy and noncontact atomic force microscopy observations identify the organometallic intermediates and their self-assemblies formed in the dehalogenation process. The demetallization of the organometallic intermediates at increased temperatures produces butadiyne moieties that spontaneously formed two different covalent structures ( i.e., graphdiyne zigzag chains and macrocycles), whose ratio was found to depend on the initial coverage of organometallic intermediates. At the optimal condition, the stepwise demetallization and cyclization led to a high-yield production of graphdiyne macrocycles up to 95%. Statistical analysis and theoretical calculations suggested that the favored formation of macrocycles resulted from the complex interplay between thermodynamic and kinetic processes involving the organometallic bonded intermediates and the covalently bonded butadiyne moieties.
