Abstract:A series of triangular, shape-persistent arylene-ethynylene macrocycles (AEMs) of related structures were synthesized and studied, with a focus on their mesomorphic behavior in correlation with their chemical structure. Generally, these discotic molecules decorated with flexible side chains demonstrated a propensity to form thermotropic liquid-crystalline (LC) phases. Characterized by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), polarized optical microscopy (POM), and X-ray diffraction (XRD), four of the eight investigated macrocycles manifested thermodynamically stable mesophases, featuring discotic nematic or columnar structures. Longer alkyl side chains were found more conducive to mesophases, and the alkoxycarbonyl functionality was a more effective side-chain linkage at inducing and stabilizing the LC states than the alkoxy side group. The size and structure of the cyclic aromatic backbone influenced both the occurrence and type of mesophase exhibited.

Abstract:Arylene ethynylene macrocycles containing 9,10-anthrylene or 1,4-naphthylene units were synthesized. In chloroform, significant resonance upfield shifting was observed with beta-protons of anthrylene and naphthylene in NMR spectra. This was considered to result from partial stacking of these aromatic units intramolecularly, driven by attractive pi-pi interactions. DFT calculations supported the proposed intramolecular stacking motif. Moreover, a liquid-crystal phase was exhibited by the anthrylene-containing macrocycle, by virtue of the unique discotic shape.

Progress in chemistry

Abstract:Macrocycles composed of arylene and ethynylene units (AEMs) have attracted great interest in recent years, due to their novel properties and potential applications. The advances in syntheses of AEMs, including different cyclization methods, solid-phase synthesis, template synthesis and aggregation driven cyclization are summarized. The progress that has been achieved for self-assembly of AEMs and its applications in supramolecule chemistry, including three-dimensional nano-structures, discotic liquid crystals, extended tubular channels, guest-host complexes and porous organic solids, is also reviewed.

Abstract:Bimolecular coupling/unimolecular cyclization strategies, including McMurry- and Glaser-type homocoupling reactions, were utilized to synthesize two shape-persistent elliptic macrocycles, which consist of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon units. The identity and purity of both macrocycles MC1 and MC2 were verified by H-1 and C-13 NMR, elemental analysis, as well as MALDI-TOF MS. The photophysical properties of MC1 and MC2 in dilute solution were also investigated.

Abstract:[Graphics]Six hydrogen-bonded shape-persistent aryl amide macrocycles have been prepared by using one-step and (for some) step-by-step approaches. From the one-step reactions, 3 + 3, 2 + 2, or even 1 + 1 macrocycles were obtained in modest to good yields. The reaction selectivity was highly dependent on the structures of the precursors. The X-ray structural analysis of two methoxyl-bearing macrocycles revealed intramolecular hydrogen bonding and weak intermolecular stacking interaction; no column-styled stacking structures were observed. The H-1 (DOSY) NMR, UV-vis, and fluorescent experiments indicated that the new rigidified macrocycles complex fullerenes or coronene in chloroform through intermolecular,pi-stacking interaction. The association constants of the corresponding 1: 1 complexes have been determined if the stacking was able to cause important fluorescent quenching of the macrocycles or coronene.

Abstract:This paper describes the synthesis of two series of rigid macrocycles from hydrogen bonding-induced folded aryl amide and hydrazone oligomers that bear two amines or one amine and one aldehyde. The diamines reacted with diacyl chloride to produce amide macrocycles, whereas the latter underwent self-coupling reactions to afford imine macrocycles. DFT calculations revealed that the new macrocycles possess rigid planar conformations and their cavity diameters were estimated to be 1.86 nm-2.75 nm. (C) 2014 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Abstract:Macrocyclic compounds play an important role in supramolecular chemistry accounting for their unique recognition and self-assembly properties and potential applications in biomedicine and material science. Azo compounds display promising capability in fields of molecular switches, polymers, smart materials and molecular machines because of their photoactive and electroactive properties. Introducing azo groups into macrocycles gives them signal moieties, additional recognition sites, photo-responsive properties, and so on. Herein, we comprehensively review the structures of azo-containing macrocyclic compounds reported up to now. Then we describe representative works on azo macrocycles with their molecular recognition, self-assembly and application emphasized.

Abstract:A large triangular arylene–ethynylene macrocycle featuring unique circularly arranged –[D–π–A]3– electronic characteristics is designed and synthesized. The shape-persistent π-conjugated backbone is composed of alternating electron-rich dialkoxyphenanthrene and electron-deficient dicyanodibenzo[f,h]quinoxaline units, connected by ethynylene linkers. The synthesis of such a special macrocyclic molecule is realized by employing a post-cyclization functional group installation strategy. The absorption and emission spectra of the macrocycle are found sensitively dependent on the solvent polarity. By virtue of a conjugated π-scaffold and a cyclic –[D–π–A]3– motif, evident two-photon absorption (2PA) and two-photon excitation fluorescence properties are exhibited, with a 2PA cross section maximum of 3 × 103 GM determined by the Z-scan method.

Abstract:Macrocycles with up to 100 atoms have been synthesised using two calix[4]arenes as templates: first, (3,5-dialkenyloxy)phenyl groups are attached to the wide rim of a calix[4]arene via urea links, then the alkenyl groups are connected via a metathesis reaction using a tetratosylurea calix[4]arene for their correct prearrangement and finally the urea functions are cleaved to detach the newly formed macrocycles.

Abstract:π-Conjugated chiral shape-persistent molecular nanocarbons hold great potential as chiroptical materials, though their synthesis remains a considerable challenge. Here, we present a simple approach using Suzuki coupling of a [5]helicene building block with various aromatic units, enabling the one-pot synthesis of a series of chiral macrocycles with persistent figure-eight and Möbius shapes. Single-crystal structures of 7 compounds were solved, and 22 enantiomers were separated by preparative chiral HPLC. A notable pyrene-bridged figure-eight macrocycle, with its rigid, fully π-conjugated and overcrowded structure, exhibited pure excimer emission and outstanding circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) properties, including a large dissymmetric factor (|glum| = 3.8 × 10−2) and significant CPL brightness (BCPL = 710.5 M-1cm-1). This method provides a versatile synthetic platform for producing various chiral D2-symmetric figure-eight macrocycles and singly or triply twisted Möbius macrocycles with C2 and D3 symmetry, offering tunable chiroptical properties for CPL applications.

Abstract:Azobenzene (azo)-based macrocycles are highly fascinating in supramolecular chemistry because of their light-responsiveness. In this work, a series of azo-based macrocyclic arenes 1, 2, 3, and 4, distinguished by the substituted positions of azo groups, is rationally designed and synthesized via a fragment-cyclization method. From the crystal and computed structures of 1, 2, and 3, we observe that the cavity size of these azo-macrocycles decreases gradually upon E -> Z photoisomerization. Moreover, light-controlled host-guest complexations between azo-macrocycle 1 and guest molecules (7,7,8,8-tetracyanoquinodimethane, terephthalonitrile) are successfully achieved. This work provides a simple and effective method to prepare azo-macrocycles, and the light-responsive molecular-encapsulation systems in this work may further advance the design and applications of novel photo-responsive host-guest systems.

Abstract:Dual-cavity macrocycles with extended π-conjugation are synthetically challenging yet attractive targets, exhibiting intriguing topologies and functional properties. In this work, a series of conjugated figure-of-eight macrocycles consisting of fused aromatic subunits are facilely prepared employing intramolecular cyclizations from precursors containing an anthracene photodimer core and phenanthrene-derived side arms. In addition to function as an X-shaped template for cyclizations, the anthracene photodimer core also enables late-stage topological manipulations by cycloreversion, affording conjugated lemniscular macrocycles with D2 symmetry.

Abstract:Pentacene's extraordinary photophysical and electronic properties are highly dependent on intermolecular through-space interactions. Macrocyclic arrangements of chromophores have been shown to provide a high level of control over these interactions, but few examples exist for pentacene due to inherent synthetic challenges. In this work, zirconocene-mediated alkyne coupling was used as a dynamic covalent C–C bond forming reaction to synthesize two geometrically distinct, pentacene-containing macrocycles on a gram scale and in four or fewer steps. Both macrocycles undergo singlet fission in solution with rates that differ by an order of magnitude, while the rate of triplet recombination is approximately the same. This independent modulation of singlet and triplet decay rates is highly desirable for the design of efficient singlet fission materials. Abstract:pi-Conjugated macrocycles have been highly attractive due to their challenging synthesis, fascinating aesthetic structure and unique physical and chemical properties. Although some progress has been made in synthesis, the study of pi-macrocycles with different structural characteristics and supramolecular interactions still faces major challenges. In this paper, two new single-bond linked macrocycles (MS-4T/MS-6T) were reported, and the corresponding vinyl-bridged heterocycloarenes (MF-4T/MF-6T) were synthesized by the periphery fusion strategy. Further studies have indicated that the structure of these four macrocycles is determined by both size and curvature, showing unique variations from nearly planar to bowl and then to saddle. Interestingly, the nearly planar MS-4T with a small size and the rigid saddle-shaped MF-6T show no obvious response to fullerenes C-60 or C-70, while the bowl-shaped MS-6T and MF-4T demonstrate a strong binding affinity towards fullerenes C-60 and C-70. What's more, two kinds of co-crystals with capsule-like configurations, MS-6T@C-60 and MS-6T@C-70, have been successfully obtained, among which the former shows a loose columnar arrangement while the latter displays a unique three-dimensional honeycomb arrangement that is extremely rare in supramolecular complexes. This work systematically studies the pi-conjugated macrocycles and provides a new idea for the development of novel host-guest systems and further multifunctional applications.
