Abstract:This paper describes the nature of the Chinese Classics and the inappropriateness of classifying the collection as literature within the Library of Congress Classification scheme. The practical and philosophical reasons for the inadequacy of Library of Congress Classification in comprehending and classifying the Chinese Classics are examined. A call is made to change the current treatment that classifies the Chinese Classics in “Class PL” (Literature) to “Class B” (Philosophy) along with modifications to relevant schedules and the addition of more sophisticated hierarchies and cross references for accuracy and consistency.

Abstract:Mapping knowledge organization system is one of the methods to solve the interoperation between different knowledge organization systems. In this paper,we mapping Chinese Library Classification and Library of Congress Classification in the fields of mathematics,psychology and education,and explore the differences between the two classifications,discuss the difficulty of mapping,and explore the solution.During mapping Chinese Library Classification and Library of Congress Classification,the principle is"narrow-match first,more relevant term first".And there are four match types:exact-match,narrow-match,broad-match and relevant-match. Each of the four relationships contains 196 items (24.5%), 423 items (52.9%), 50 items (6.3%) and 130 items (16.3%). The main factors that influenced the match type are: different cultural and language background, different social backgrounds, different principles when compiling the classifications, the gap of subject development in America and China.

Abstract:The classical Chinese literary system owns no independent status because of its affiliation to catalogue books under the dual pressure from politics and Confucianism. Thus, political and ideological connotations come before the aesthetic value in its creation and interpretation. And <em class="EmphasisTypeItalic">Ji</em>, one of the four categories in the Imperial Catalogue, had long been the synonym for classical literary system. Such situation remained stable until the importation of the cataloguing type in modern Western library science that changed the essence of the system into a knowledge structure from a political order. What's more, it also helped to promote the specialization and discipline of literature, an essential link in the modernization of Chinese thinking and education. Despite the various advantages in this process, this paper argues that we should not neglect the more serious disadvantages in simplifying the essence of classical Chinese literary system into the plane aesthetic value, blind of its multi-dimensional functions indicated by the setting and ranking of categories and also the works' location in cataloguing, both of which matter much more for the interpretation of classical Chinese literature.
Language Models and Classification Analysis for Dream of the Red Chamber

Abstract:Dream of the Red Chamber is regarded as one of the four great classical novels in Chinese literature and the dispute over the authorship of the last 40 chapters has existed for years. In this paper, the novel is divided into three parts: the first 40 chapters, the middle 40 chapters and the last 40 chapters. They are analyzed separately based on language models and text classification. To be specific, in this research, on the one hand, from the aspect of linguistic features, we analyze N-gram models, calculate Jaccard Index, acquire the differences of words, and describe the collocations with the grammatical information. On the other hand, from the aspect of machine learning, the method of Random Forest is used to extract characteristics in experiments for automatic classification and the result shows that most of the first 40 chapters and the middle 40 chapters are not identified as the group of the last 40 chapters. With all these experiments above, finally we are able to reach the conclusion that differences between the last 40 chapters and the first 80 chapters do exist.

Abstract:Books classification by computer has become one of the most critical issues which should been solved immediately in digital library construction because of increasing volume of book publishing.This paper tries to induct the BP nerve net and Support Vector Machine algorithms to bibliography classification,and establishs bibliography hierarchy classification system model based on machine learning faced to the Chinese Library Classification,then proposes the design ideas of describing bibliographies using feature weighted mode and constructing shallow classification system.It verifies the feasibility and rationality of the model by large-scale experiment,and basically solves the case of the bibliography automatic classification without subject labeling,which lays a theoretical foundation for constructing the practical bibliography automatic classification system,and provides factual basis for the wide range application of machine learning methods for the construction of digital libraries.9 figs.5 tabs.14 refs.

Abstract:Books in libraries, catalogues and databases are often arranged by such bibliographic schemes as the Dewey Decimal Classification (DDC), the Universal Decimal Classification (UDC) or the Library of Congress Classification (LCC). These divide books into a set of different disciplines, such as philosophy, history or literature. The names and coverage of disciplines are inherited from a long tradition coming from at least the 16th century, but are not the only logical way to group topics.

Abstract:In the process of studying the history of books classifications of Nanjing University Library,several original guidance books of classification are found to be lost or damaged severely.These earlier classifications were widely used to guide the work in Nanjing University Library and played a crucial role on the history of books classification.To conserve these cultural heritages more effectively,Nanjing University Library spares no efforts to make "Nanjing University Library classification" be full-text digitized,and then makes a web database based on AMP frame.This project can provide a clear relation of the information of books and improve the books classification system,so that Nanjing University Library can provide more effective and better services for staff and students.

Abstract:Modern Chinese library cataloging practices were developed from Western practices and rules of library cataloging. In a long period of time, various major libraries had their own cataloging rules and no unified national rules existed. During June 1994-October 1995, the National Technical Committee for Information and Documentation Standardization and the Library Society of China jointly sponsored and pushed to organize an editorial board of Chinese Cataloging Rules, which was published in 1996, just before the 62nd IFLA General Conference in Beijing. Chinese Cataloging Rules was based mainly on ISBDs and AACR2, with the consideration of Chinese characteristics and without the consideration of the concept of main entry. The second edition of Chinese Cataloging Rules was published in 2005. The National Library of China organized the revision work, and experts from major libraries and academic institutions participated in the work. Since then, there have been quite a lot of controversies over the use of the rules, which are focused on the internationalization and national characteristics. All people talked about internationalization and ISBD. But they have different points of view about the Chinese characteristics and different ways of understanding about the articles in ISBD. This paper is to compare International Cataloguing Principles and Chinese Cataloging Rules, and analyze their differences. Abstract:The part of Zi(works of masters,philosophers,and other treatises) in the Four Categories of ancient Chinese books is very complicated,and it includes all the books that cannot be classified into the other three parts.Classification of this part among Dunhuang documents is much more complicated owing to their particularity.On the basis of the classification of the Summary of the General Catalogue of the Four Categories while consulting the classification of other books of classic catalogues,the author classifies these documents into seven categories according to their actual contents: namely,works of masters,medicines,astronomy,and algorithms,horoscopy,reference books,art,and religions.Descriptive texts and explanation about the types of subgroups of each category are also provided.

Abstract:To classify the unearthed bamboo slips and silks, the best way is to place them in the same category as other books of the time. Its significance on the study of historical documents is as follows. 1 .They have reflected the ups and downs of the ancient books before the Qin dynasty; 2. They have extended the content of the ancient books before and during the Qin dynasty and the Han dynasty; 3. They have reflected the standard for selecting materials in the collection of Yiwen Zhi in Han Shu. 4.
