Abstract:Montmorillonite contents of once and twice purified bentonite have increased by 27.12% and 32.65% compared to raw mine,respec- lively.Under the other conditions of reaction time of 5h,reaction temperature of 95-98℃and the solid-liquid ratios of 1:3,it was showed that acid activated bentonite prepared from once purified bentonite with 60% sulfuric acid strength was the optimal,namely bleaching capability of the prod ucta reached 99.6%,activity degree was162mmol/100g,free acid was 0.013%.Furthermore,the orthogonal experiments on once purified clay for preparing acid activated bentonite was studied,the best processing conditions were followed,the solid-liquid ratios of 1:3,reaction time of 4h and solfuric acid strength of 70%.Bleaching capability,activity degree and free acid were 99%,135.6mmol/100g and 0.011%,respectively.

Abstract:According to the bentonites properties and mineral composition, three bentonites with 32-36% montmorillonite content(MC) from Laiyang, Shandong, China, are purified for utilizing low grade bentonite sufficiently. Research shows that the purification is effective by separating –325 mesh products from raw bentonite after soaking, stirring and rubbing in water. Firstly, the three bentonites are combined into one and soaked in water for 24h with the ratio of liquid and solid 15:1, and then, the bentonite is purified using –325 mesh sieve after stirring and rubbing in water for 1h with pulp density of 26%. Methylene blue index(MBI) of the product is 22.52g/100g, swell index(SI) is 5.5mL/2g, water absorption(WA) is 184.3%, water content(Wa.C) is 9.7%, and the indexes meet the stantard of three grade Ca-bentonite(TGCB)applying to iron ore pellets.

Abstract:The kaolin deposit in Jiaozuo area is excellent resource mainly hosted in Middle Carboniferous Benxi Formation.To take coal measures kaolin in Jiaozuo area as raw material,carried out mineral composition and content analyses,studied impacts on whiteness from additive kind and dosage,inlet material grain size,calcining time and calcining temperature etc.The study has demonstrated that the capped kaolin sample calcining for 4 hours at 900oC with 5% reducing agent and 2% chlorinating agent as additives,the whiteness of kaolin sample can increase from 45.84% to 88.68% and satisfy the demand of rubber filling and moderating paper coating.Tested results can provide major foundation to exploit and use of coal measures kaolin in the area.

Abstract:Using Hongquan bentonite from Jinchang Area,Gansu Province as raw materials and adopting the method of orthogonal test,the feasibility of preparing activated clay by Hongquan bentonite is analysed and proofed.The results show that the bentonite can be prepared into activated clay,even can be prepared into activated clay with high decolorization rate on certain conditions.

Abstract:Impurities limit the application of low-grade bentonite, resulting in a large waste of resources. A simple physical method composed of grinding, dispersion and centrifugation was adopted to purify a low-grade bentonite from Zhejiang, China. This experiment increased the montmorillonite content of the bentonite from 44% to 96.5% with montmorillonite yield over 70%. The influence of the grinding time of raw bentonite, the dispersant dosage in bentonite dispersion, and the centrifugal speed on the purification of bentonite were investigated. Results indicate that appropriate grinding is crucial to the dissociation of bentonite aggregates. The particle size of raw bentonite decreases with increasing the grinding time but it is needed to stay within a certain range to avoid excessive grinding that hinders the purification. A suitable amount of dispersant can change the surface potential of minerals and enlarge the flottability and stability differences between montmorillonite and impurities, which is important for their separation by aqueous dispersion. Centrifugal speed is also critical as too low speed decreases the purity level of the purified bentonite and too high speed lowers the yield of montmorillonite.

Abstract:The purification of the high loss, low-grade diatomite production in Inner Mongolia was carried out by water separation-calcination process. The effects of the times of water separation and calcination conditions on the purification of diatomite were investigated and the characteristics of purified diatomite were conducted by XRD, FTIR, SEM, BET and chemical analysis in this study. The results indicated that the water separation can efficiently remove the quartz, feldspar and clayey impurities in diatomite and the organic matter can be removed by calcination at 600°C. Consequently, the silica content fraction in purified diatomite was above 82. 98%, the specific surface area was 44.5 m2/g and the tap density was 21 mL/10 g. In the absence of air condition, the purified carbonized-diatomite had a good compatibility with rubber which can be widely used instead of semi-reinforcing carbon black.

Abstract:CeO2 as active component was made by Ce(NO3)3·6H2O.The desulfurizer was prepared by dry-mixed process.The specific surface area,pore volume,crystal structure and mechanical intensity of sorbent were characterized by means of several techniques,such as BET,XRD and so on.The effects of calcination temperature,the content of pore-made reagent on sulfidation efficiency of cerium oxide sorbent were investigated in fixed bed reactor in meantime.It is concluded that in the range of 500 ℃ to 800 ℃,the specific surface area is enlarged quickly,the pore volume also has the direction of increase rapidly and the desulfurization efficiency can be improved with the increasing calcination temperature.It also founds that the desulfurization efficiency is heightened by increasing content of pore-made reagent,but the mechanical intensity decreases.The bentonite as the additives exhibited higher desulfurization activity than other clays.The desulfurization activity can be improved by calcination temperature,proper content of pore-made reagent and suitable clay.

Abstract:Bentonite is characterized by the large specific surface, good adsorption, ion exchange ability, and nontoxicity. An enhanced bentonite base composite flocculant (BTA) can be prepared from treating the calcium base bentonite and compositing various functional additives. Bentonite was firstly treated by citric acid, then the talc and activated carbon turned to be acid part and simultaneously the part that was treated by sodium bicarbonate and calcium hydroxide turned to be alkaline part, and finally the acid bentonite part and alkaline bentonite part were mixed up with preground powder of polymeric chloride aluminium (PAC), cationic polyacrylamide (CPAM), ferrous sulfate, and aluminum sulfate, and after all of the processing flocculant BTA was obtained. The optimum preparation process of flocculant BTA has shown 29.5% acid bentonite part, 29.5% alkaline bentonite part, 15% PAC, 1% CPAM, 5% ferrous sulfate, and 20% aluminum sulfate. BTA was used to treat drinking water with high turbidity and metal ion in Karamay City, Xinjiang. The treated water was surely up to the drinking water standard of China in decolorization rate, deodorization rate, heavy metal ion removal rate, and so forth, and contents of residual aluminum ions and acrylamide monomer in drinking water were considerably decreased.

Abstract:150million tons of low grade calcium base bentonite are reserved in Tongling of Anhui Province with an average content of montmorillonite between 50%and 80%.The Tongling bentonite is mainly used as pellet soil and molding soil with low added value.In this study,the low grade calcium base bentonite was sodiummodified through suspension and extrusion methods,then added three additives including organic-inorganic mixed viscosifier which is composed of ultra-high molecular weight sodium polyacrylate,light-burned magnesia and a homemade rheology modifier HmPS synthesized from humic acid and small molecular weight partially hydrolyzed polyacrylonitrile.High yield bentonite that meets the standard of horizontal directional drilling(HDD)was prepared through the above technical process.After analyzing the effect of sodium-modified treatments and additives on apparent viscosity(600),ratio of yield point to plastic viscosity(YP/PV),rheology behavior and the cost of HDD,a more cost efficient technical formulation was achieved.The performances of the product reach the standard:600>100dia,YP/PV<1.5,API filter loss<15mL/30min.When the calcium base bentonite from Tongling is made into high yield bentonite used in HDD,the added value of the product could reach about 1000RMB/ton and the profit margin will be 2-3times higher than before.This would be an example of making low grade bentonite into the product with considerable economic benefits.

Abstract:The whitening process of calcium-base bentonite from Xinyang was studied. The effects of different types of acids, concentration, reaction temperature and time were investigated. The results showed that the higher the concentration of the acid was, the higher the whiteness of the product was, and the higher the temperature was and the longer the reaction time was, the better the effect of the acid-leaching was. It was found that when the concentration of the acid was below 25%, the interlayer structure of the bentonite had no change after acidizing treatment.

Abstract:The calcium bentonite was converted into sodium bentonite with sodium chloride as the conversion agent by suspension method.With the application of the uniform design experiment method, the best prepared conditions were selected, and cation exchange capacity, dilation volume, colloid valence, blue absorption power were determined.It was showed that the sodium bentonite was greater than calcium bentonite, and with ore concentration of 16%, sodium chloride dose of 6%, reaction temperature of 65 ℃, reaction time of 90 min, sodium modification effect was best.The cation exchange capacity of 0.992 mmol · g-1 , dilation volume of 19.7 mL · g-1 , colloid valence of 5.98 mL · g-1 , blue absorption power of 0.387 mmol· g-1 were achieved.They approached the standard of first-class product.

Abstract:We selecte two bentonite products: activated clay and organo-bentonite, and introduce the related content of them like industrial applications, technology and raw materials of producting at the same time. After that, we choose the preparation processes of activated clay and organo-bentonite. Choose conditions of the prepared samples, arranging test methods by orthogonal test program, and preparing of the activated clay and organo-bentonite samples in accordance with the different test conditions. Finally, we draw this conclusion according to the test analysis and demonstration results. We propose the recommendations of the development of activated clay and organo-bentonite by Hongquan bentonite, pointing out that the shortcomings of this study and proposing pilot study of future.
Effects of Various Acidification Reagents and Concentrations on Activation Effect of Bentonite from Wulanlinge

Abstract:Activation effect of bentonite from Wulanlinge ore,treated with phosphoric acid,sulfuric acid and hydrochloric acid,respectively,were investigated.Results showed clearly that activation effect with phosphoric acid was worse as a whole,namely,free acid of products prepared with phosphoric acid with range from 0.302% to 0.869% was much higher than that,ranging from 0.026% to 0.070%,of products prepared with sulfuric acid.However,the bleaching capability was lower than that of products prepared with sulfuric and hydrochloric acid.Furthermore,both acids activated bentonites prepared with 25% sulfuric acid and 30% hydrochloric acid possessed the highest bleaching capability.Sulfuric acid was more suitable for activation reagent by taking everything into account.With the increasing of acid addition amount,activity degree of products prepared with each acidification reagent had the same changing tendency with free acid.The addition amount of acid at the maximum of activity degree was lower than that at the maximum of bleaching capability,and loose density and bleaching capability of products had reverse change trends as a whole.

Abstract:The low performance Ca-bentonite can be modified into the high-grade and high added-value bentonite by the further processing. The data of XRD and other performance tests of the bentonite in Ezhou Liangzi Lake ore district of Hubei showed that the material has the characteristics of high methylene blue adsorbed and other lower performance. By contrasting colloid index, swelling value and swelling volume of raw bentonite and Li and Na-modified bentonite, proper materials and method used in modification of this area were discussed.

Abstract:The process of preparing organic bentonite from a natural Ca-bentonite sample and the process parameters were investigated, which included the effect of the type and dosage of quaternary ammonium, synthesis time and temperature, etc. Results indicated that organic bentonite could be prepared firstly by Na-modification and then by quaternary ammonium treatment. The d((001)) of the Na-modified sample reduced to 12.65 ? from 15.40 ? of the raw material, and its cationic exchange capacity(CEC) increased to 117.80 mmol/100 g from 58.75 mmol/100 g. The d((001)) values of organically modified samples increased to 17～29 ?, and the organic gels prepared by different organoclays displayed different viscosities.

Abstract:Na-bentonite of high purity has numerous applications in many industries. The raw bentonite ore contains many impurities and consists mainly of Ca-bentonite. In this study, sodium chloride (NaCl), sodium carbonate (Na2CO3), sodium pyrophosphate (Na4P2O7), and sodium hexametaphosphate (NaPO3)6 were used to modify GMZ bentonite, followed by purification. The optimal modification and purification conditions (such as inor-ganic salt, temperature, time, dosage, and particle size) were determined by testing the montmorillonite content, adsorption and expansion properties of modified bentonite. The results showed that the modification effect was the best when NaCl was added at t = 3 h and T = 60 degrees C. During the modification process, Na+ replaced Ca2+ and Mg2+ through ion exchange; the impurity minerals, quartz and feldspar, were removed from the bentonite by purification; and the montmorillonite content increases from 46.6 % to around 90 %. The modification effects of NaCl, Na4P2O7, and (NaPO3)6 were improved with the dosage increasing, and Na2CO3 can complete the modi-fication of GMZ bentonite when the dosage was 2 %. Compared with the bentonite purified by tap water (TW) and deionized water (DW), the yield of bentonite can be greatly improved by adopting the technique of modi-fying first and then purifying.

Abstract:A new process for manufacturing organically compounded bentonite was developed successfully based on the organic intercalation and layered structure of bentonite. The main steps in the proposed process included wet sodium activation of bentonite ore, organic compounding and high-pressure roll grinding. The optimum procedure is recommended as follows: 5 mass% of sodium carbonate powder and 30 wt.% water are added to activate the bentonite ore for 24 h to prepare activated bentonite; 0.5 wt.% of organic molecules are added into the activated bentonite for organic compounding for 12 h; then, the high-pressure roll grinding is followed to treat the organically compounded bentonite; and finally, drying and fine grinding are performed for preparing the final organically compounded bentonite product with 10 wt.% moisture and 98% passing 0.074 mm. The obtained organically compounded bentonite was characterized using an X-ray diffractometer, a scanning electron microscope and an X-ray photoelectron spectrometer. To confirm the effect of organically compounded bentonite on green balls, the pelletizing tests were carried out. The results showed that high-pressure roll grinding can not only enhance the ability of the crystal layer to hold the combined water, but also strengthen the intercalation compounding of the organic additive, which is beneficial for the formation of a fiber-interlaced structure of the organically compounded bentonite and improves the quality index of the bentonite itself. Also, the organically compounded bentonite is helpful to improve the indexes of green balls.
