Abstract:Aiming at the multi-carrier filter bank transmission system for coherent optical offset quadrature amplitude modulation (CO-FBMC/OQAM) technique, a pilot-based time-domain phase noise compensation algorithm is proposed. A time-domain phase noise compensation model is established, that is, phase noise is approximated by time-domain extended discrete cosine transform (DCT). Phase noise includes common phase error (CPE) and non-CPE phase noise, which can be obtained by estimating DCT coefficients. In order to calculate these DCT coefficients, the CPE is estimated by pilot-based extended Kalman filter (EKF). Then, some of the data with high error probability after CPE compensation arc discarded, and only the remaining CPE compensation data are retained for pre-decision to predict the sender data. Finally, the proposed algorithm is simulated and verified in a back-to-back CO-FBMC/OQAM system with a baud rate of 32 GBaud. The results show that compared with an improved phase search (M-BPS) algorithm, the spectral efficiency of the proposed algorithm decreases by 0.5%-2.0%. For 61-order QAM systems with subcarriers M=256 or 512, the linewidth delay product tolerance of the proposed algorithm is still much larger than that of the M-BPS algorithm, but its complexity is only half that of the M-BPS algorithm.

Abstract:A phase noise compensation algorithm based on joint estimation of Kalman filtering (KF) in time and frequency domains is proposed aiming at higher-order quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM) based incoherent optical orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (CO-OFDM) system with large linewidth. Training symbols and pilot sequences in time domain are set in the transmitter. Frequency domain Kalman filtering is carried out based on training symbols at the receiver, and channel estimation value is obtained. Rough estimate value of phase noise is obtained with time domain extended Kalman filtering (EKF). The estimation value of phase noise in time domain is plural, and in order to obtain better compensation results, every OFDM symbol is divided into several sub-symbols according to the number of pilot sequences. Time domain EKF is carried out at the positions of pilot sequences. Rough estimation value of phase noise of every sampling point is obtained with linear interpolation at the last pilot of every sub-symbol. Predecision of frequency domain data after rough phase noise compensation and time domain phase noise fine compensation are carried out. Numerical simulation is performed by the proposed algorithm for CO-OFDM system with transmission rate of 50 Gbit· s_1 and transmission distance of 100 km. Results show that the compensation results achieved by the proposed method are better than that of other methods. When CO-OFDM system is with 16QAM and a laser linewidth of 1 MHz or with 32QAM and a laser linewidth of 800 kHz, bit error rate can reach the upper limit of forward error correction.

Abstract:Previous studies have revealed the similarity between phase noise in the symbol domain of discrete Fourier transform spread (DFT-Spread) coherent orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (CO-OFDM) systems and that in the time domain. This paper further details this characteristic through both formulas and simulation results, while also analyzing and summarizing its formation conditions and influencing factors. Based on this, a phase noise compensation (PNC) scheme based on DFT-Spread OFDM is proposed for high-order quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM) transmission with large fast Fourier transform (FFT) sizes. The proposed scheme effectively suppresses inter-carrier interference (ICI) introduced by phase noise in OFDM systems, as verified through simulations of dual-polarization (DP) 64-QAM CO-OFDM transmission over 80 km single-mode fiber (SMF). This work suggests that proposed PNC scheme enhance the tolerance for laser linewidth in OFDM systems, and may offer a possible solution for short distance high-baud-rate high-order QAM coherent transmission.

Joint Phase Noise Compensation Algorithm Using RF-Pilot and Extended Kalman Filter in CO-OFDM Systems

Abstract:We propose a phase-noise compensation algorithm by using radio frequency pilot (RF-Pilot) method in combination with extend Kalman filter (EKF) in time domain for the coherent optical orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (CO-OFDM) system with large linewidths and high-order circular quadrature amplitude modulation (C-QAM). We realize the coarse phase-noise compensation in time domain by setting a RF-Pilot at the receiver, and then complete the channel evaluation and channel balance. After accomplishing the initial pre-decision in the frequency domain, we use EKF to realize the final phase noise compensation, according to the judged temporal signal and the channel equalization temporal signal. We numerically verify the algorithm by transforming in a 50 Gb.s(-1) CO-OFDM system with 100 km transmission distance under C-16QAM and C-32QAM. The results show that compared with original RF-Pilot phase-noise compensation algorithms, the proposed method has better performance on the phase noise compensation while has no obvious decrease of frequency utilization, and the complexity is not increased significantly. For CO-OFDM systems with C-32QAM and a laser linewidth of 2.1 MHz, the bit error rate achieves the upper limit of forward error correction. It theoretically confirms that the proposed algorithm can improve the tolerance of laser linewidth on the CO-OFDM system. We can use the inexpensive distributed feedback lasers with relatively large linewidth as the source of the object and the oscillator of the receiver. The proposed phase-noise compensation algorithm is beneficial to the application of CO-OFDM system in long distance access network and metropolitan area network.

Abstract:Filter bank multi-carrier with offset QAM(FBMC/OQAM) is a multi-carrier modulation technique that can be an alternative to conventional orthogonal frequency division multiplexing(OFDM) with cyclic prefix (CP) in wireless network. FBMC has a higher spectrum efficiency and effective emission power without CP. Because the orthogonality only exists in real domain, the channel estimation in FBMC/OQAM system is more challenging. In this paper, the IAM preamble-based method and the DFT-based channel estimation are combined to do the estimation. And two improved DFT-based channel estimation methods are proposed to remove the noise in the channel impulse response(CIR) of conventional DFT-based method. The proposed are proved to have a better performance than the conventional DFT-based.

Abstract:Schemes integrating inter-carrier interference (ICI) self-cancellation and common phase error (CPE) compensation for coherent optical orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (CO-OFDM) systems are investigated. The purpose of our research is to counteract the impacts of laser phase noise and fiber nonlinearity. We propose two ICI self-cancellation-based CO-OFDM schemes, and adopt a pilot-aided decision feedback (DFB) loop for CPE compensation. The proposed schemes are compared with conventional CO-OFDM schemes at the same spectral efficiency. Simulations show that our schemes can not only enhance laser linewidth tolerance of the CO-OFDM system, but also present strong robustness against fiber nonlinearity.

Abstract:A blind inter-carrier interference (ICI) phase noise compensation algorithm,which can solve the problem of symbol decision error effectively,is proposed based on the large linewidth coherent optical orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (CO-OFDM) system.Before using the proposed algorithm,we use the non-iterative blind (IFB) algorithm to compensate phase noise of common phase error (CPE).The proposed algorithm uses the cost function which is with simple form,so the computational complexity reduces significantly.The ICI phase noise compensation algorithm includes coarse ICI phase noise compensation and fine ICI phase noise compensation.Firstly,the averagepower blind (Avg-BL) algorithm is implemented in the coarse ICI phase noise compensation,and then the common phase error compensation (CPEC) algorithm is implemented in the fine ICI phase noise compensation.A decision process will be performed by CPEC algorithm for the frequency-domain signals after the coarse ICI phase noise compensation.Every received OFDM symbol is separated into several sub-symbols in time-domain,and the approximate average value of phase noise of every sub-symbol is calculated.The sign decision error propagation problem in CPEC algorithm is solved when we use the Avg-BL algorithm.When the number of sub-symbols separated from OFDM symbol in time-domain is large,the CPEC algorithm can achieve the desired compensation performance for ICI phase noise.For the 50 Gbit/s CO-OFDM system with 100 km transmission distance,the numerical simulation is performed.The simulation results show that,compared with the other phase noise compensation algorithms,such as the Avg-BL algorithm and the CPEC algorithm,the proposed algorithm has good phase noise compensation performance with high spectral efficiency.With the suitable number of OFDM sub-symbols in timedomain,the proposed algorithm can obtain better compensation performance,and its complexity does not increase significantly.

Abstract:We propose a high spectral efficiency coherent optical orthogonal frequency division multiplexing system utilizing a novel and almost blind phase noise compensation method. With the aid of pseudo pilots instead of pilots, laser phase noise can be suppressed effectively while the overhead of system is reduced successfully. Numerical results show that the performance of the proposed pseudo pilot-aided phase noise compensation scheme can approach that of the pilot-aided counterpart, yet achieve higher spectral efficiency even when the phase noise is severe.

Abstract:The wideband Doppler effect in underwater acoustic (UWA) channels introduces considerable intercarrier interference (ICI) to the subcarriers of orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM). To mitigate the ICI, a two-step method can be employed: First, estimate the Doppler factor and perform resampling accordingly; then, estimate and compensate for the residual carrier frequency offset. In fast time-varying UWA channels, the demodulation performance of OFDM may suffer from degradation because of time-varying Doppler effects. In this research, an algorithm to address this issue by dividing the symbols into two time-domain segments and compensating for different frequency offsets after resampling to mitigate severe Doppler interference is proposed. The proposed algorithm achieves performance improvements in simulated UWA channels as well as in at-sea conditions.

Abstract:The filterbank multicarrier (FBMC) waveform has better properties in spectral as compared to the Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM) and it exhibits good anti-interference performance. We mainly consider an important variety of the FBMC systems, namely FBMC based on offset orthogonal amplitude modulation (FBMC/OQAM). This letter presents an analysis of the residual Doppler effect in the multipath underwater acoustic (UWA) channel for the FBMC/OQAM system. Assuming the received signal has gone through coarse non-uniform Doppler compensation by resampling, we model the compensated signal with residual Doppler effect and multipath effect. Especially, we derive a simplified closed-form expression for the received FBMC signal after non-uniform Doppler compensation under the signal-to-interference ratio. The theoretical results and the simulations show better compliance in the UWA multipath channel. Furthermore, the results obtained demonstrate that FBMC has better BER performance than the cyclic prefix (CP) based OFDM in the case of residual Doppler effect under the UWA channel.

Abstract:In this paper, we describe the impact of quadrature imbalance (QI) in the presence of frequency offset in an optical coherent offset quadrature phase shift keying (OQPSK) receiver. Arbitrary conjugate misalignment was realized in a 2×4 90° optical hybrid, and the ellipse correction (EC) method of quadrature imbalance was applied in our simulation. In the case of transmission, the EC method can significantly improve the system performance.

Abstract:Phase noise, introduced by the receiver local oscillator, has severe effects on the performance of orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) systems. The common compensation method can only correct common phase error (CPE) caused by the low-frequency part of the phase-noise spectrum, and cannot compensate phase noise thoroughly. A new method, per-symbol phase noise detection and compensation method, is proposed. Based on a frequency-domain linearized parametric model for phase noise, the method not only deals with CPE more effectively, but also compensates most of the intercarrier interference (ICI) induced by the high-frequency part of the phase-noise spectrum. This method well compensates phase noise in higher SNRs and lower quality tuners.

Abstract:Fiber nonlinearity limits the use of coherent optical orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (CO-OFDM) to upgrade wavelength-division multiplexing (WDM) systems using legacy non-return-to-zero-on-off-keying (NRZ-OOK) channels. This letter proposes to compensate for the fiber nonlinearity of CO-OFDM with NRZ-OOK neighbors by combining digital signal processing (DSP)-based self-phase modulation (SPM) post-compensation with pilot-tone-based cross-phase modulation (XPM) compensation. The simulation results demonstrate that the optimum low-pass filter bandwidth for pilot-tone-based XPM compensation depends on the pilot-to-signal ratio value and launch optical power. Our method allows a 4-dB increase in the launch power for a 40-Gb/s single polarization CO-OFDM channel placed in the middle of six 10.7-Gb/s NRZ channels in a 50-GHz space and 1 200-km WDM system.

Abstract:Orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) has been widely used in wireless communication systems for the advantage of mitigating inter-symbol interference caused by multi-path propagation. However, OFDM based wireless communication systems, such as the ultra-wideband (UWB) system, suffer performance degradations caused by phase noise distortion. The phase noise distortion introduces two effects: common phase error (CPE) and inter-carrier interference (ICI). In this paper, the VLSI architecture for phase noise compensation based on decision feedback algorithm using MMSE equalization is investigated. Particularly, the finite word length effect specific to the architecture is analyzed considering the tradeoff between the performance and the hardware complexity.

Abstract:In this paper, a new precoder for a coherent optical filter bank multicarrier with offset quadrature amplitude modulation (FBMC/OQAM) system is proposed. The precoder is designed based on an iterative polynomial eigenvalue decomposition (PEVD) algorithm to jointly mitigate the inter-symbol interference (ISI) and inter-carrier interference (ICI). The PEVD algorithm is used to decompose a polynomial channel matrix into polynomial eigenvectors and eigenvalues matrices, then a precoder is designed based on the decomposed matrices. The precoder acts as a filter applied to each subcarrier and to its adjacent subcarriers. In addition, a new adaptive optimum energy algorithm is proposed to truncate the insignificant precoder filter coefficients produced by the PEVD algorithm and consequently reduce the computational complexity. A mathematical model and algorithm for implementing the precoder are also presented. Robustness of the proposed precoder has been analyzed and compared to existing precoder in optical channel with different dispersion effects. Numerical results demonstrate that the new precoder significantly outperforms the existing precoder in terms of error vector magnitude (EVM), bit error rate (BER), Frobenius norm of the error matrix, and computational complexity.

Abstract:Filter bank multi-carrier (FBMC) can provide higher spectral efficiency and lower out-of-band spectrum leakages than orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) or discrete multi-tone (DMT). Due to a crystal or oscillator usually having a frequency tolerance and stability of a few tens of parts per million (ppm), the sampling frequency offset (SFO) between digital-to-analog converter and analog-to-digital converter in the transceiver will seriously degrade the performance of these asynchronous optical multi-carrier communication systems. The SFO-induced impairments and their estimation and compensation methods have been widely studied in optical OFDM/DMT systems. However, the SFO problem is rarely investigated in the optical fiber FBMC system. In this work, the SFO-induced impairments in the asynchronous optical FBMC system are first theoretically analyzed, and then we propose an inter-symbol guard (ISG) and training symbol (TS)-aided SFO estimation method and compare two commonly used SFO compensation methods, i.e., phase compensation (PC) and digital interpolation (DI) regarding estimation accuracy and bit error rate (BER) or error vector magnitude performance by both numerical simulation and offline experiment. The results exhibit that an SFO estimation accuracy of less than ±1 ppm is achieved in the intensity modulation and direct detection FMBC system with a 20-km single-mode fiber link under initial SFOs up to ±200 ppm. Besides, FBMC can afford a similar BER performance with DMT with PC or DI methods in the presence of SFO up to ±100 ppm, and achieve a negligible power penalty at the BER of 3.8e-3, compared to the SFO-free cases. Moreover, FBMC is more robust to SFO estimation errors than DMT.
