Abstract:We propose and experimentally investigate a scheme for transmitting a phase-modulated (PM) radio-over-fiber (RoF) signal along an existing fiber infrastructure without degradation of the existing baseband signal. Optical phase encoding of both signals, namely a baseband 21.4-Gb/s nonreturn-to-zero differential quaternary phase-shift keyed signal and a 5.25-GHz RoF carrying 1.25 Gb/s, enables the use of identical optical receiver structures. The experimental results show that both receivers achieve error-free operation after 80-km standard single-mode fiber transmission. The proposed scheme has potential applications for converged wireless and wireline optical access networks.

Abstract:A robust 4-channel WDM optical phase modulated 60GHz wireless fiber system is proposed and simulated. In this system, a Fabry-Perot (FP) frequency interleaver is designated to suppress optical carriers for 60GHz signal generation. The simulation results show that this phase modulated WDM system is not susceptible to crosstalk.

Abstract:A novel digital signal processing-based coherent receiver for phase-modulated radio-over-fiber (RoF) optical links is presented and demonstrated experimentally, Error-free demodulation of 50-Mbaud binary phase-shift keying (BPSK) and quadrature phase-shift keying data signal modulated on a 5-GHz radio-frequency (RF) carrier is experimentally demonstrated using the proposed digital coherent receiver. Additionally, a wavelength-division-multiplexing (WDM) phase-modulated RoF optical link is experimentally demonstrated. A 3 x 50 Mb/s WDM transmission of a BPSK modulated 5-GHz RF carrier is achieved over 25 km for the WPM channel spacing of 12.5 and 25 GHz, respectively.

Abstract:We propose and experimentally demonstrate generation of optical carrier suppressed-optical differential phase-shift keying (OCS-oDPSK) modulation format in radio-over-fiber (RoF) systems using one single-drive Mach-Zehnder modulator (MZM). This scheme realizes up-conversion of baseband data for down-link wireless service delivery, generation of remote local oscillator (LO) signal for down-conversion of uplink radio frequency (RF) signal, and remodulation of down-converted uplink data, thus lowering the cost of base stations (BSs) in full-duplex RoF systems. The proposed scheme is expected to be simple and compact due to the use of a single MZM. Furthermore, the OCS-oDPSK generation principle is extended to obtain an OCS-optical differential quadrature phase-shift keying (OCS-oDQPSK) signal by employing a dual-parallel MZM (DPMZM), which is useful to deliver multiple wireless services on the same RF carrier.

Abstract:One of the primary drawbacks of orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM) is the large peak-to-average ratio (PAPR). It continues to contribute nonlinear degradations after it was introduced into optical fiber transmissions. However, phase-modulated OFDM can reduce the PAPR to the minimum, since its amplitude can be constant. In this paper, we conduct the theoretical and experimental study on the laser phase noise effect in phase-modulated coherent optical OFDM systems. Due to the laser phase noise, the phase transformation at the receiver is prone to errors due to phase wrapping. Consequently, we propose a mean-phase-compensation (MPC) method, which compensate for the mean phase offset for each OFDM symbol that has a Gaussian-distributed histogram. This method can avoid the problematic unwrapping function in phase transformation. We derive the closed-form expressions for the phase noise spreading and the corresponding signal-to-noise ratios (SNRs) based on the Wiener phase noise model. Unlike conventional coherent optical OFDM, the phase noise spreading to each OFDM subcarrier is decided by the reciprocal of the square of the subcarrier frequency, and the SNR can be improved by using a stronger PM modulation. We also discuss the SNR improvement by discarding a few affected subcarriers closing to dc. In a simulation, we demonstrate that our closed-form expressions are accurate. Finally, we experimentally verify our MPC method and our analysis.
Carrier Phase Recovery in Optical Fiber Communication Systems Using High-Order Modulation Formats

Abstract:Nowadays, the coherent optical communication system plays an important role in communication field because of large capability and bandwidth. A coherent optical communication, based on high-order modulation and digital signal processing technologies, consists of optical transmitters, optical fiber lines, optical amplifiers and optical receivers. In the high-speed coherent optical communication system, the phase noise from the transmitter laser and the local oscillator laser can significantly degrade the performance of the signal transmission and detection, especially for the systems using high-order modulation format, such as m-ary phase shift keying (m-PSK) and m-ary quadrature amplitude modulation (m-QAM). Therefore, investigations on laser phase noise compensation algorithm based on digital signal processing technologies has become more and more significant. In this work, a multi-ring carrier phase recovery algorithm is developed for compensating the laser phase noise in optical fiber communication systems using high-order modulation formats. Degradations on the performance of communication systems due to the laser phase noise have been investigated. The system performance using the proposed algorithm and the conventional Viterbi-Viterbi algorithm were also evaluated in 9-channel and 15channel, 32-Gbaud, Nyquist-spaced QPSK, 16-QAM, 64-QAM and 256-QAM coherent transmission systems with considering the impact of the laser phase noise. It is found that the phase noise leads to stricter constraints on the linewidths of transmitter-side and receiver-side lasers, and it can greatly degrade the achievable information rates in communication systems. Besides, compared to the conventional Viterbi-Viterbi algorithm, which is usually applied in the QPSK system, our proposed algorithm can also well mitigate the laser phase noise in 16-QAM, 64-QAM and 256-QAM optical communication systems.

Abstract:A modulating retro-reflector (MRR) with optical phase conjugation (OPC) compensation is presented and demonstrated to mitigate the turbulence-induced channel distortion for high-speed coherent free-space optical (FSO) communications. The impact of the turbulence on the beam spot, the phase fluctuation and the bit error rate (BER) is analyzed for the MRR FSO link carrying quadrature phase-shift keying (QPSK) signals with spatial or single-mode fiber (SMF)-based OPC. The mitigation of the atmospheric turbulence is verified by comparing the transmission performance of the MRR FSO links with and without OPC. The compensation using SMF-based OPC is experimentally demonstrated in a turbulence-tunable atmospheric chamber. The BER is improved by two orders of magnitude in the turbulent channel with the temperature difference of 250 degrees C, and the power penalty is reduced by about 2.0 dB, which agree well with the simulation results. A larger receiving aperture size will improve the compensation effect

Abstract:A bidirectional lightwave transport system employing direct modulation CATV and phase remodulation radio-over-fiber (ROF) signals in two-way transmission is proposed and experimentally demonstrated. To be the first system of reusing the phase of the transmitting lightwave with multi-carrier analog CATV signal, the transmission performances of CATV and ROF signals are investigated in bidirectional way, with the help of optical band-pass filters (OBPFs) at the receiving sites. Through a serious investigation, the transmitting light sources are successfully remodulated with RF signals for transmission. Brilliant transmission performances of composite second-order (CSO), composite triple-beat (CTB), and bit error rate (BER) were obtained; accompanied with acceptable carrier-to-noise ratio (CNR) value. This proposed system reveals a prominent one with economy and convenience to be installed.

Abstract:We have recently demonstrated the improved phase noise tolerance in coherent optical OFDM by digital coherent superposition of optical OFDM subcarriers, which are phase-conjugated pairs with Hermitian symmetry. In this approach, we realized DCS of OFDM subcarriers in single polarization (or channel), denoted as SP-DCS-OFDM. In this paper, we show that another approach is in dual polarizations, or DP-DCS-OFDM. According to the concept of phase-conjugated twin wave, both approaches can also mitigate the fiber nonlinearity to the first order. We prove that both approaches can cancel the inter-carrier interference (ICI) due to phase noise to the second order, and we derive the reduced ICI power to the fourth order using the Wiener phase noise model. In simulation, we show the enhanced tolerance to the laser phase noise and fiber nonlinearity.

Abstract:A novel method is demonstrated to tunably compensate dispersion effect in phase modulated radio over fiber (RoF) links using an optical carrier Brillouin processing technique, which is based on stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS) to control the phase shift of optical carrier in the modulated lightwave signal. Since this phase shift can be dynamically tuned, frequency response can be tunably improved. Both simulation and experimental results show that a uniform frequency response ranging from 1–12 GHz with a fluctuation of less than ±1 dB can be obtained by an optimal phase shift on the optical carrier.

Abstract:We propose a high spectral efficiency coherent optical orthogonal frequency division multiplexing system utilizing a novel and almost blind phase noise compensation method. With the aid of pseudo pilots instead of pilots, laser phase noise can be suppressed effectively while the overhead of system is reduced successfully. Numerical results show that the performance of the proposed pseudo pilot-aided phase noise compensation scheme can approach that of the pilot-aided counterpart, yet achieve higher spectral efficiency even when the phase noise is severe.

Abstract:Schemes integrating inter-carrier interference (ICI) self-cancellation and common phase error (CPE) compensation for coherent optical orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (CO-OFDM) systems are investigated. The purpose of our research is to counteract the impacts of laser phase noise and fiber nonlinearity. We propose two ICI self-cancellation-based CO-OFDM schemes, and adopt a pilot-aided decision feedback (DFB) loop for CPE compensation. The proposed schemes are compared with conventional CO-OFDM schemes at the same spectral efficiency. Simulations show that our schemes can not only enhance laser linewidth tolerance of the CO-OFDM system, but also present strong robustness against fiber nonlinearity.

Abstract:Previous studies have revealed the similarity between phase noise in the symbol domain of discrete Fourier transform spread (DFT-Spread) coherent orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (CO-OFDM) systems and that in the time domain. This paper further details this characteristic through both formulas and simulation results, while also analyzing and summarizing its formation conditions and influencing factors. Based on this, a phase noise compensation (PNC) scheme based on DFT-Spread OFDM is proposed for high-order quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM) transmission with large fast Fourier transform (FFT) sizes. The proposed scheme effectively suppresses inter-carrier interference (ICI) introduced by phase noise in OFDM systems, as verified through simulations of dual-polarization (DP) 64-QAM CO-OFDM transmission over 80 km single-mode fiber (SMF). This work suggests that proposed PNC scheme enhance the tolerance for laser linewidth in OFDM systems, and may offer a possible solution for short distance high-baud-rate high-order QAM coherent transmission.
