Abstract:A facile and highly chemoselective protocol for the synthesis of benzil derivatives has been developed by oxidation of stilbenes in an I-2-H2O system under air. Notably, the method was applicable to 26 examples and provided up to 98% yield, avoiding the use of acid, metal catalysts and so on.

Abstract:A convenient and efficient synthesis of 2-substituted benzo[b]thiophenes is described. This one-step reaction of alkylthiobenzaldehyde and activated electrophiles proceeded smoothly in toluene at 120 degrees C with magnesium oxide as a catalyst. The target 2-substituted benzo[b]thiophenes are obtained in moderate yields and the side reaction is inhibited via azeotropic distillation. According to the experiments, a plausible mechanism is presented.

Abstract:A simple and efficient strategy for the chemoselective synthesis of (2 Z ,5 Z )-3-benzyl/alkyl-5-(2-oxo-5-arylfuran-3(2 H )-ylidene)-2-(phenylimino)thiazolidin-4-one derivatives is developed via a sequential three-component reaction of readily available phenacyl bromides, pyridine and methyl 2-(3-benzyl/alkyl-4-oxo-2-(phenylimino)thiazolidin-5-ylidene)acetates in acetonitrile at room temperature. The advantages of this one-pot sequential Michael addition/1,2-H shift/elimination of pyridine/intramolecular cyclization are highlighted by its low energy requirements (short reaction times at room temperature), excellent yields, the absence of a metal catalyst, and mild conditions. The product structures are characterized by spectroscopic techniques and single-crystal X-ray analysis. Synthesis of Stilbenes by Cyanide/Base-Mediated Coupling of Benzylic Chlorides and Alcohols

Abstract:A straightforward procedure has been developed for the direct synthesis of stilbenes from benzylic chlorides and alcohols. The transformation employs a two-step one-pot protocol where the benzylic chloride is first subjected to a substitution with potassium cyanide in o -xylene. Without workup, the resulting arylacetonitrile is then reacted directly with the benzylic alcohol and potassium tert -butoxide to generate the stilbene framework. The condensation has been performed with a variety of commercially available benzylic chlorides and alcohols to afford substituted stilbenes as the pure E -isomers. A kinetic isotope effect of 5.2 has been measured for the overall transformation when comparing benzyl alcohol and α,α- d 2 -benzyl alcohol. The release of cyanide during the final elimination to stilbene has been confirmed by a picrate test. Thus, the potassium tert -butoxide-mediated elimination of cyanide is believed to proceed by an E1cB mechanism where the deprotonation reaction constitutes the rate-determining step.
