Abstract:Chiral 9-amino epi-cinchonine was anchored on external surface passivated SBA-15 as well as calcined SBA-15. The two resulting materials were used as catalysts for the asymmetric transfer hydrogenation of aromatic ketones after complexing with [Ir(COD)Cl](2). Higher enantioselectivities were obtained over the passivated SBA-15 supported catalyst compared with the catalyst based on calcined SBA-15 as well as the homogeneous counterpart. Especially for the substrate of acetophenone, an obviously high enantiomeric excess (ee) of 74% (homogeneous ee: 60%) was achieved with comparable conversion to the homogeneous catalyst (97% vs. 98%). Furthermore, the passivated SBA-15 supported catalyst demonstrated higher stability during the asymmetric transfer hydrogenation reaction as compared with the catalyst based on calcined SBA-15. Abstract:A conceptually new strategy for chiral catalyst immobilization, self-supported catalysts, in heterogeneous asymmetric catalysis is highlighted in the present article. Various homochiral metal-organic polymers with diverse structures have been designed and readily prepared through coordination assembly of modular polytypic/polyfunctional ligands and metal ions without using any supports. These polymers have been successfully employed as chiral catalysts in a variety of heterogeneous asymmetric ractions, including hydrogenation, epoxidation, sulfoxidation, carbonyl-ene reactions, diethylzinc addition, and Michael addition. The self-supported heterogeneous chiral catalysts showed activity and enanioselectivity comparable or even superior to those obtained with their corresponding homogeneous counterparts, and could be readily recovered and reused several times without significant loss of activity or enantioslectivity.

Abstract:A new strategy for the heterogenization of chiral titanium complexes was developed by the in situ assembly of bridged multitopic BINOL ligands with [Ti(OiPr)4] without using a support. The assembled heterogeneous catalysts (self-supported) showed excellent enantioselectivity in both the carbonyl-ene reaction of alpha-methylstyrene with ethyl glyoxylate (up to 98 % ee) and the oxidation of sulfides (up to >99 % ee). The catalytic performance of these heterogeneous catalytic systems was comparable or even superior to that attained with their homogeneous counterparts. The spacers between the two BINOL units of the ligands in the assembled catalysts had significant impact on the enantioselectivity of the carbonyl-ene reaction. This demonstrates the importance of the supramolecular structures of the assemblies on their catalytic behavior. In the catalysis of sulfoxidation, the self-supported heterogeneous titanium catalysts were highly stable and could be readily recycled and reused for over one month (at least eight cycles) without significant loss of activity and enantioselectivity (up to >99.9 % ee). The features of these self-supported catalysts, such as facile preparation, robust chiral structure of solid-state catalysts, high density of the catalytically active units in the solids, as well as easy recovery and simple recycling, are particularly important in developing methods for the synthesis of optically active compounds in industrial processes.

Abstract:Well-designed, self-assembled, metal-organic frameworks were constructed by simple mixing of multitopic MonoPhos-based ligands (3; MonoPhos = chiral, monodentate phosphoramidites based on the 1,1'-bi-2-naphthol platform) and [Rh(cod)(2)]BF4 (cod = cycloocta-1,5-diene). This self-supporting strategy allowed for simple and efficient catalyst immobilization without the use of extra added support, giving well-characterized, insoluble (in toluene) polymeric materials (4). The resulting self-supported catalysts (4) showed outstanding catalytic performance for the asymmetric hydrogenation of a number of alpha-dehydroamino acids (5) and 2-aryl enamides (7) with enantiomeric excess (ee) ranges of 94-98% and 90-98%, respectively. The linker moiety in 4 influenced the reactivity significantly, albeit with slight impact on the enantioselectivity. Acquisition of reaction profiles under steady-state conditions showed 4h and 4i to have the highest reactivity (turnover frequency (TOF) = 95 and 97 h(-1) at 2 atm, respectively), whereas appropriate substrate/catalyst matching was needed for optimum chiral induction. The former was recycled 10 times without loss in ee (95-96%), although a drop in TOF of approximately 20% per cycle was observed. The estimation of effective catalytic sites in self-supported catalyst 4e was also carried out by isolation and hydrogenation of catalyst-substrate complex, showing about 37% of the Rh-1 centers in the self-supported catalyst 4e are accessible to substrate 5c in the catalysis. A continuous flow reaction system using an activated C/4h mixture as stationary-phase catalyst for the asymmetric hydrogenation of 5b was developed and run continuously for a total of 144 h with >99% conversion and 96-97% enantioselectivity. The total Rh leaching in the product solution is 1.7% of that in original catalyst 4h.

Abstract:The immobilization of homogeneous catalysts for recycle and reuse provides an effective way to solve the problems associated with the catalyst cost and metal contamination in a homogeneous catalytic process. Different from the conventional catalyst immobilization methods, the self-supporting strategy utilizes homochiral metal-organic coordination polymers generated by self-assembly of chiral multitopic ligands with metal ions without using any support. The self-supported chiral catalysts as a novel strategy for immobilization of homogeneous catalysts demonstrated excellent enantioselectivities in heterogeneous catalysis of a variety of asymmetric reactions. This paper reviews the progress in the research on a variety of heterogeneous asymmetric catalytic reactions with self-supported chiral catalysts.

Abstract:A chiral heterogeneous hydrogenation catalyst ( M-CS-SiO2 ) was prepared by supporting transition metal on natural macromolecular biopolymer of chitosan covering on silicon dioxide, and characterized with elemental analysis, FT-IR and XRD. The catalytic performance of the chiral catalyst was investigated for the asymmetric transfer hydrogenation of acetophenone to R(S)-1-phenyl ethanol in ambient condition. The results indicate that among the chiral M-CS-SiO2(M = Pd, Pt, Rh and Ru) catalysts prepared, the Pd-CS-SiO2 catalyst shows the best catalytic activity and enantioselectivity to R-1-phenyl ethanol, and the palladium precursor affects its catalytic performance very little. In the asymmetric transfer hydrogenation of acetophenone catalyzed with Pd-CS-SiO2,the catalytic activity and the enantioselectivity are greatly influenced by the sort of H-donor used and reaction temperature. Ammonium formate and sodium formate are the suitable hydrogen donors. If there is some water in the solvent, the asymmetric transfer hydrogenation of acetophenone will be deteriorated as ammonium formate is used as H-donor;when sodium formate is used as H-donor, the presence of 5% water in the solvent can increase 8.4% enantiomeric excess. When ammonium formate was used as hydrogen donor and the asymmetric transfer hydrogenation of acetophenone was performed at 80 ℃ , the enantiomeric excess of R-1 -phenylethanol reached to 69%.

Abstract:Selective hydrogenation reactions provide a pivotal and promising strategy for upgrading substances with unsaturated functional groups, in which supported non-noble metal catalysts play a crucial role in determining catalytic performance toward desirable products. By means of a precipitation method, hydrothermal and solvothermal methods, sol–gel synthesis as well as ion exchange method, various kinds of supported catalysts with high efficiency have been reasonably designed and developed. The detailed investigations by virtue of comprehensive studies demonstrated that in addition to the inherent properties of metal elements, the nanosized effect, the metal-alloy effect, and the metal–support interaction impose significant influences on the resulting catalytic behavior. Moreover, we discuss the catalytic applications of heterogeneous non-noble metal catalysts with focus on the catalytic hydrogenation of unsaturated aldehydes/ketones, alkynes and alkadienes, and functionalized nitroaromatic hydrocarbons. In this review, on the basis of achievements in the representative investigations, suggestions and prospects for the further progresses in the development of heterogeneous non-noble metal catalysts toward selective hydrogenation reactions have been put forward.
