Abstract:The history for the development of chiral phosphorus ligands in catalytic asymmetric hydrogenation is briefly highlighted. This review focuses on the recent advances in the synthesis of the monodentate phosphorus ligands and their applications in catalytic asymmetric hydrogenation. The examples highlighted in this article clearly demonstrated the importance and advantages of monodentate phosphorus ligands, which had been ignored for 30 a and experienced a renaissance at the very beginning of this millennium, particularly in the area of asymmetric hydrogenation.

Abstract:Since the 21st century, the study of chiral monophosphorous ligands, especially chiral mono-phosphites ligands and mono-phosphoramidites ligands has attracted widespread attention.This kind of ligands was extensively used in various asymmetric catalytic reactions, for most of them were easily synthesized and showed good stability, high activity and high enantioselectivity.The diverse common monodentate phosphonites, phosphites, and phosphoramidites ligands and their applications in asymmetric hydrogenations over the past two decades are reviewed.

Abstract:Novel chiral aminophosphine phosphinite, DPAMPP was designed and synthesized from (1S,2R)-1,2-diphenyl-2-aminoethanol. Its cationic rhodium complex has been found to be an excellent catalyst for enantioselective hydrogenation of dehydroamino acids (more than 95.0%e.e.).

Abstract:A series of structurally novel, operationally convenient, and efficient chiral 2-phosphino-2,3-dihydrobenzo[d][1,3]oxaphosphole ligands was developed. Applications of ligands 3a and 3b in rhodium-catalyzed asymmetric hydrogenation of alpha-(acylamino)acrylates and beta-(acylamino)acrylates provided excellent enantioselectivities (up to >99% ee) and reactivities (up to 10 000 TON).

Abstract:The utilization of hydrogen bonding as an activation force has become a powerful tool in asymmetric organocatalysis. Significant advances have been made in the recent past in this emerging field. Due to space constraints, this Focus Review summarizes only the key aspects with an emphasis on catalysis based on chiral ureas and thioureas, diols, and phosphoric acids. The examples provided neatly demonstrate that chiral ureas and thioureas, diols, and phosphoric acids display effective and unique activation modes of catalysis for a broad spectrum of asymmetric organic transformations, including single-step and multiple-step cascade reactions. These functionalities, which have the ability to afford efficient H-bond activation of electrophiles including C=O, C=N, aziridines, and epoxides, have established their status as "privileged" functional groups in the design of organocatalysts.

Abstract:A strategy for chiral ligand design has been developed that allows for incorporation of an achiral bicyclic bridgehead phosphoramidite to generate a class of hybrid diphosphorus ligands for high activity and asymmetric control. Using this concept, a series of chiral phosphine–phosphoramidite ligands bearing the sole chirality at the ligand backbone have been prepared and successfully employed in the Rh-catalyzed asymmetric hydrogenation of 2-vinylanilides for the synthesis of optically active anilines bearing an ortho-tertiary benzylic stereocenter.The Supporting Information is available free of charge at https://pubs.acs.org/doi/10.1021/acs.orglett.1c02978.(PDF)This article has not yet been cited by other publications.

Abstract:A new strategy for asymmetric synthesis, namely asymmetric activation, is presented and some of its recent advances are reviewed. with asymmetric activation strategy, a chiral or even racemic catalyst may be selectively activated by a chiral activator to yield non - racemic products. The advantage of this approach over the deactivation strategy is that the activated catalyst can produce a greater enantiomeric excess in the products than the enantiomerically pure catalyst can alone.

Abstract:Since its early stages, ligands incorporating P-stereogenic phosphine/aminophosphine donor groups have shown significant potential in metal-catalyzed asymmetric hydrogenation. Despite the initial promise, their synthesis presented challenges that led to a period of reduced attention from the scientific community. However, recent advancements in the development of more straightforward methodologies for introducing chirality to the phosphine moiety have given rise to new P-stereogenic phosphine/aminophosphine-containing ligands for this process. This chapter summarizes the progress made in this field from the end of 2010 to the present.

Abstract:A new family of P-chiral P,π-hybrid ligands was prepared from the dihydrobenzooxaphosphole core. These new ligands were demonstrated to be both sterically and electronically tunable at the substituents on the phosphorus atom and the π-system of the ligand. Application of these new ligands to the catalytic asymmetric addition of boronic acids to imine electrophiles was shown to proceed with high levels of enantioinduction.

Abstract:Chiral spiro phosphorus ligands including monophosphoramidites and diphosphines, which contained 1,1'-spirobiindane as a backbone, were designed and synthesized. These spiro ligands were proven to be highly efficient for rhodiurn- and rutheniurn-catalyzed asymmetric hydrogenations of prochiral olefins and ketones with excellent enantioselectivities.

Abstract:Despite the remarkable reactivity that was achieved by a series of transition-metal catalysts with a PNP type ligand, the electron-rich chiral PNP ligands have still been rarely reported because of the difficulties in synthesis and the nature of air-sensitivity. Herein, we report a novel chiral PNP ligand (Heng-PNP) with both a rigid backbone and a bulky tert-butyl group on the phospholane motif. We successfully obtained its divalent iron complex. The chiral environment of its Ir(III) complex was also discussed with quadrant analysis. This tridentate ligand was applied in iridium-catalyzed asymmetric hydrogenation of challenging diaryl ketones: up to 98% ee and 500 TON are achieved. Computational study showed that the twist of conjugate aryl group in the substrate (induced by the special chiral pocket of Ir/Heng-PNP complex) leads to the energy difference in the enantiodetermining step.
