Abstract:Red phosphor is indispensable to achieve warm white light in the white light diode (WLED) application. However, the current red phosphors suffer from high cost and harsh synthesis conditions. In this study, an oxide-based rare-earth-free red-emitting phosphor Li3Mg2NbO6:Mn4+ (LMN:Mn4+) has been successfully synthesized by a simple solid-state reaction method. The relationship between crystal structure and luminescence was investigated in detail. The site occupancy of the doping Mn4+ ion in the LMN host has been discussed from the point of bond valence sum. How the coordination environment of doping Mn4+ affects the energy level of doping Mn4+ ion has been illustrated via the Tanabe-Sugano energy-level diagram. Moreover, warm white light has been obtained using LMN:Mn4+ as compensator to the YAG:Ce3+.

Abstract:Red-emitting Mg4 Nb2 O9 :Eu(3+) phosphor is synthesized via a solid-state reaction method in air, and its crystal structure and luminescence are investigated. The phosphor can be excited efficiently by ~ 395 nm light, coupled well with a ~ 395 nm near-ultraviolet chip and emits red light at ~ 613 nm with sharp spectra due to (5) D0 → (7) F2 transition of the Eu(3+) ion. Mg4 Nb2 O9 :Eu(3+) phosphor sintered at 1350 ºC shows Commission international de I'Eclairage (CIE) chromaticity coordinates of x = 0.6354, y = 0.3592, and is a potential red-emitting phosphor candidate for white light-emitting diodes (W-LEDs) under ~ 395 nm near-ultraviolet LED chip excitation.

Abstract:Novel red phosphors Na(Y1-xEux)(Si1-yMoy)O-4 were developed for white light emitting diode applications and their luminescent properties were investigated in detail. The results indicated that NaY1-xEuxSiO4 samples can be effectively excited by near-ultraviolet light (393 nm) and the introduction of Mo6+ strongly enhanced the emission intensity of Eu3+ when samples were excited under 393 nm, which was ascribed to the improvement of absorption intensities of F-7(0) -> L-5(6) transitions. Besides, the quantum efficiencies of a series of Na(Y1-xEux)(Si1-yMoy)O-4 samples were calculated according to the average decay lifetimes. The composition-optimized Na(Y0.7Eu0.3)(Si0.7Mo0.3)O-4 sample exhibited the red light emission brightly with the chromaticity coordinates of (0.66, 0.34), whose integral intensity was calculated to be about 2.16 times of that of the commercial red phosphor Y2O3: Eu3+. A Novel Red Phosphor Ca2YNbO6:Eu3+ for WLEDs

Abstract:Due to the advantages of good physicochemical properties, thermal stability, and optical properties, double perovskite compounds have received extensive attention. On this basis, a new type of red phosphor, Ca2YNbO6:xEu(3+), was synthesized using a high-temperature solid-phase method. Its phase purity, morphology, elemental composition, absorption spectrum, photoluminescence, thermal stability, and Commission Internationale de l'eclairage (CIE) chromaticity coordinates were thoroughly investigated. The results display that there is no impurity phase in the samples and the convergence factor R-wp = 14.2%; the microscopic particles are uniform and full, and the distribution of each element is uniform. The energy band gap Delta E is between 3.71 eV and 3.65 eV. The luminescence intensity is the best when the doped Eu3+ concentration x reaches 0.4, and emits 612 nm red light (D-5(0)-> F-7(2)) under 465 nm excitation, and the concentration quenching is attributed to a d-d interaction. The luminescence intensity at 425 K was still 75% of the room temperature luminescence intensity, which indicates that the thermal stability is extremely superior. The CIE chromaticity coordinates (0.6534, 0.3455) of the Ca2YNbO6:0.4Eu(3+) phosphors are very close to National Television Standards Committee (0.670, 0.330), and the samples have low correlated colour temperature (2656 K) and high colour purity (99.90%). All findings suggest that Ca2YNbO6:Eu3+ can serve as a substitute for red phosphor in WLEDs.

Abstract:Li2.06Nb0.18Ti0.76O3: xEu3+ (x = 1–4 wt%) phosphors were synthesized by sol-gel method. The effects of the synthesis temperature, holding time and concentration of Eu3+ on the luminescent properties were detailed investigated. The properties of the samples were characterized by X-ray powder diffraction (XRD) and photoluminescence spectroscopy. X-ray powder diffraction showed that the samples were composed of Li2TiO3 and EuNbO4 when sintered at 850 °C for 9 h. With the increasing of Eu3+ concentration, holding time and synthetic temperature, both the intensities of excitation spectra (monitored at 612 nm) and emission spectra (excited at 396 nm) of Eu3+ were firstly remarkably enhanced and then weakened. When the content of Eu3+ increased to x = 3 wt% at 850 °C for 9 h, the intensity of peak reached the maximum. The emission spectra and chromaticity coordinate (CIE) demonstrated that the Li2.06Nb0.18Ti0.76O3: 3 wt% Eu3+ red phosphors were better than the commercial red phosphors Y2O3: Eu3+. These features show that the red phosphors can be used as suitable candidates for LEDs.

Abstract:Eu3+, Sm3+ co-doped ZnNb2O6 orange-red phosphors were synthesized through the solid-state reaction method for the first time. The microstructure, photoluminescence properties, decay time, energy transfer mechanism, thermal stability and CIE chromaticity coordinates of Zn1-x-y Nb2O6: xSm3+, yEu3+ phosphors were studied systematically. The XRD patterns and refinement results demonstrate that the rare earth ions have been effectively doped into ZnNb2O6 host lattices. Under the excited of 406 nm, the main emission peak intensity of Sm3+ decreased and Eu3+ increased with increasing of Eu3+ ion concentration in the Zn0.99-y Nb2O6: 0.01Sm3+, yEu3+ phosphors, which due to the energy transfer from Sm3+ to Eu3+. Through the decay time measurements, energy transfer mechanism was proved to the electric dipole-electric dipole effect in the resonance transfer mode, and the transfer efficiency of ZnNb2O6: 0.25Eu3+, 0.01Sm3+ phosphor is calculated as 85.39%. Through the analysis of thermal stability properties of the co-doped sample, the thermal activation energy of thermal quenching is calculated to be 0.235 eV. The CIE chromaticity coordinates for co-doped sample are located at the orange-red region, the correlated color temperature and color purity are calculated to be 1927 K and 95.87%, respectively. In addition, a WLED device can be obtained by combing the co-doped sample with commercial blue (BaMgAl10O17: Eu2+) and green ((Sr, Ba)2SiO4: Eu2+) phosphors on a 395 nm N-UV LED chip. These results indicate that ZnNb2O6: Eu3+, Sm3+ phosphor is a promising candidate for WLEDs.

Abstract:Abstract The fabrication and luminescent properties of novel Na 2 YMg 2 V 3 O 12 :Eu 3+ phosphors produced by conventional solid-state reactions were investigated. Self-activated emission of the Na 2 YMg 2 V 3 O 12 host produces a broad emission band ranging from 400 to 700 nm with a maximum peak at 530 nm, ascribed to the charge transfer in the (VO 4 ) 3− groups. Excitation with near-UV (365 nm) light causes the Na 2 YMg 2 V 3 O 12 :Eu 3+ phosphors to emit bright red light, including both the broad emission band of the (VO 4 ) 3− groups and the sharp emission peaks of Eu 3+ ions. At a quenching concentration of 0.03 mol, the Eu 3+ ion emission peaks were located at 597, 613, 654 and 710 nm. As-prepared Na 2 YMg 2 V 3 O 12 :Eu 3+ phosphors also exhibited stable emission at high temperatures. Furthermore, a designed and packaged white-light-emitting diode (WLED) lamp, including the obtained phosphors, commercial (Ba,Sr) 2 SiO 4 :Eu 2+ green phosphors, BaMgAl 10 O 17 :Eu 2+ blue phosphors and a near-ultraviolet (n-UV) chip, emitted bright white light with a good chromaticity coordinate of (0.3068, 0.3491), a satisfactory colour rendering index of 88.20 and a properly correlated colour temperature of 4460.52 K. These results indicate the potential of this Na 2 YMg 2 V 3 O 12 :Eu 3+ phosphor as a red-emitting phosphor for solid-state illumination.

Highly symmetric lattice environment induced orange-red emitting of Eu3+ in a novel tungstate phosphor with broad-band ultraviolet excitation

Abstract:In this work, we reported the synthesis and characteristic luminescence of an orange-red emitting phosphor NaBa10Y5W4O30: Eu3+ for ultra-violet white light emitting diodes. The phase compound, crystalline structure and morphology are analyzed. The results indicate that a heavy doping of Eu3+ (x = 50%) is realized in NaBa10Y5-5xW4O30: xEu3+ without any impurity phase. Moreover, the optical band gap is analyzed by diffuse reflectance spectroscopy and further confirmed by density function theory (DFT). Meanwhile, the as-synthesized NaBa10Y5W4O30: Eu3+ phosphor can be efficiently pumped by strong broad-band excitation around 315 nm due to the charge transfer transition from [WO6]6- groups to Eu3+. Owing to the highly symmetric lattice environment of Eu3+ in YO6 sites, a strong orange-red emission at 596 nm with color purity of 95.34% is obtained, corresponding to the 5D0→7F1 magnetic dipole transition of Eu3+ ions. The critical concentration is obtained to be x = 15%, and the quenching mechanism is discussed to be dipole-dipole interaction. Furthermore, the temperature dependent emission behavior are analyzed, and the thermal quenching mechanism are explained by the variable temperature decay curve and configuration coordination diagram. Finally, an orange-red light emitting diode lamp is fabricated based on NaBa10Y5W4O30: 15%Eu3+ phosphor and 315 nm semiconductor chip. In summary, the results indicate that NaBa10Y5W4O30: Eu3+ phosphor has the potential to be an orange-red phosphor for white light emitting diodes.

Abstract:A novel alkaline earth niobates red phosphor CaNb2O6:Eu3+ have been prepared through solid-state reaction, using the nanocrystalline EuB6 as a novel activator. The Rietveld refinement of XRD results reveal that the Eu3+ ions substitute the lattice site of Ca2+ ions and the B2− ions replace the lattice site of O2− ions, which induces the defect energy levels at the band gap of 5Dn levels and leads to higher luminescence intensity of five times higher than using the Eu2O3 activator. The CIE chromaticity coordinates of Ca0·88Nb2O6:0.12EuB6 phosphor were calculated to be (0.643, 0.34) and it is quite similar to that of pure red light. Moreover, this phosphor exhibits an excellent luminescence thermal stability. When the ambient temperature rises to 398 K (125 °C) and 423 K (150 °C), the integrated emission intensity remains 90% and 86% of their initial PL intensity at 300 K, respectively. Based on above mentioned, the Ca1-xNb2O6:xEuB6 as a NUV-excited red phosphor have a potential application for the high-performance white LEDs.

Abstract:A new composite perovskite Ba3ZnNb2O9: Eu3+ orange-red phosphor series was synthesized by high temperature solid-state reaction. The structural analysis showed that Ba3ZnNb2O9 exhibits an ordered hexagonal phase after sintering at high temperature, and Eu3+ ions replace Zn2+ ions after doping. By exploring the influence of sintering temperature and doping concentration on the luminescence of the samples, it is found that the optimum sintering temperature doping concentration of the phosphors are 1300. C and 0.3 mol, respectively. Under the near-ultraviolet excitation, Ba3ZnNb2O9: 0.3Eu(3+) phosphors emitted orange-red light at 593 nm, the chromaticity coordinate is (0.607, 0.389). By linear fitting of the diffuse reflectance spectra of the samples, the optical band gap of the Ba3ZnNb2O9 is 3.05 eV, and it becomes narrower after doping. The thermal quenching activation energy is 0.132 eV by thermal stability analysis. The results showed that Ba3ZnNb2O9: Eu3+ phosphor is suitable for white LEDs excited by near ultraviolet.
Synthesis and photoluminescence properties of high-quality reddish-orange emitting Ca4Nb2O9:Eu3+ phosphors for WLEDs and anti-counterfeiting

Abstract:In this report, we successfully synthesized a novel trivalent europium (Eu3+)-activated Ca4Nb2O9 phosphor emitting reddish-orange light via its 5D0 → 7F1 and 5D0 → 7F2 transitions. In the Ca4Nb2O9 host, Eu3+ ions exhibited optimal doping at a concentration of 15 mol%, with the concentration-quenching mechanism predominantly driven by electric dipole-dipole interactions. In addition, the Ca4Nb2O9:Eu3+ phosphor exhibited excellent thermal stability with a photoluminescence (PL) intensity of 71.6% at a working temperature of 423 K. Interestingly, the internal PL quantum yield (PLQY) of the optimal sample was obtained to be 87.43%, and the external PLQY was determined to be 47.81%. The fabricated white light-emitting diode that employed this optimized phosphor alongside commercial phosphors, via a novel silica epoxy gel (parts A and B)-based method, exhibited good color rendering index (color rendering index = 80.65), excellent warm-correlated color temperature (correlated color temperature = 3753 K), and Commission International de l'Eclairage chromaticity coordinate (0.3922, 0.3845). Moreover, the optimal phosphor was introduced into the polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) polymer film, creating a translucent film. These films were then fabricated on glass, plastic, and card, which showed a satisfying emission under ultraviolet radiation. Consequently, the proposed Eu3+-activated Ca4Nb2O9 phosphors can be used as light sources and the Ca4Nb2O9:Eu3+-PVA film is proposed for anti-counterfeiting applications.

Abstract:A new eulytite-type NaBaBi2(PO4)3: xEu3+ (NBBP:xEu3+) phosphors were synthesized via high temperature solid state reaction. The phase, composition, morphology, band structure, luminescence, electrical properties and thermal stability of the as-prepared NBBP:xEu3+ samples with various Eu3+ doping content were investigated in detail. XRD, structural refinement results show that the Eu3+ ions replace the Bi3+-site in the lattice. The morphology, elemental composition and molecular structure of the phosphor were studied by SEM, XPS and FT-IR. The band gap of the NaBaBi2(PO4)3 host obtained by diffuse reflectance spectroscopy is about 4.08 eV, and the Eu3+ ions doping has little effect on the band gap. Room temperature fluorescence spectra show that both near ultraviolet and blue light sources are the excitation pump sources of phosphors, and the electric dipole transition (5D0→7F2) at 611 nm dominates the red emission. With the increase of doping content, the fluorescence lifetime almost remains unchanged, and the CIE coordinates move to the red region, and the color purity also increases. When the temperature rises to 423 K, the emission intensity of the phosphor remains at 80% of the original intensity at room temperature, and the activation energy ΔE is calculated to be 0.175 eV, indicating that the phosphor has excellent thermal stability. It can be predicted that NBBP:Eu3+ phosphor has potential application in phosphor conversion white light-emitting diodes (pc-WLEDs).

Abstract:A series of Ba3-xSrxZnNb2O9: 0.3Eu(3+) (x = 0, 0.5, 1, 1.5, 2, 2.5, 3) orange-red phosphors were synthesized by high-temperature solid-phase reaction. In order to identify and describe the crystal structure, luminescence characteristics and thermal stability of the samples, XRD and luminescence spectroscopy tests were carried out. The refined XRD results showed that Eu3+ ions have been successfully doped into Ba3-xSrxZnNb2O9 matrix and occupied partly the sites of Eu3+ ions. Under UV excitation of 396 nm, the emission spectra of the samples are composed of two emission peaks near 593 nm and 612 nm with a slight blue shift, attributed to the increase in splitting degree of 5d electron orbit of Eu3+ ions. At 523 K, the thermal stabilities of phosphors with Sr2+ ion doping concentration of 2 and 3 are 82.14% and 84.33%, respectively. With the increase of Sr2+ ion concentration, the activation energy increases from 0.198 eV to 0.230 eV, better than the other reports. In addition, the CCT (below 2000 K) and color purity (above 95%) of the samples are calculated. A WLED device can be obtained by combining the as-prepared orange red-emitting phosphor with commercial blue (BaMgAl10O17: Eu2+) and green ((Sr, Ba)(2)SiO4: Eu2+) phosphors. All these indicated that the self-made phosphors are promising to be used in UV/n-UV pumped WLEDs requiring low CCT.
Intense Red Light Emission Of Eu3+-Doped Sr3b2sio8 For White Light-Emitting Diodes

Abstract:Intense red-emitting phosphors Sr3-2xEuxNaxB2SiO8 were synthesized via high-temperature solid-state reactions. The crystal structure, luminescent properties, and quantum efficiencies of the as-prepared phosphors, as well as their luminescent thermal quenching capabilities and CIE coordinates were investigated for the first time. The results indicated that Sr3-2xEuxNaxB2SiO8 phosphors could be efficiently excited by the near-ultraviolet light (394 nm) to realize a novel red luminescence corresponding to the electric dipole transition D-5(0)-F-7(2) of Eu3+ ions. Based on the theoretical calculation, the dipole-dipole interaction was dominantly involved in the mechanism of concentration quenching of Eu3+ in the phosphors, and the activation energy for thermal quenching (Delta E) was determined to be 0.214 eV. The effects of charge compensation on the luminescence behaviors of Sr3-2xEuxNaxB2SiO8, where M+ represented a monovalent cation like Li+, Na+, or K+ acting as a charge compensator, were also investigated. The composition-optimized Sr2.80Eu0.10Na0.10B2SiO8 exhibited the preferable CIE coordinates of (0.644, 0.350), whose integrated intensity was calculated to be 1.7 times of that of the commercial red phosphor Y1.90Eu0.10O2S. These results suggest that Sr3-2xEuxNaxB2SiO8 phosphors are competitive as the promising red-emitting phosphor-converted materials for white light-emitting diodes. Abstract:Broadband ultraviolet (UV) excitation and narrow red-emitting phosphors are employed extensively for spectrum conversion, while exploring materials with luminous efficiency enough high for application is still challenging. Herein, the extremely efficient red emission is realized by a way of the exciton-assisted energy transfer, when the phosphors LuNbO4:xEu3+ are irradiated by a UV-light in the broadband region of 220-300 nm. As exciting the interband transition with the UV-light, the self-trapped excitons (STEs) are generated, and captured by Eu3+ ions to transfer the energy for lighting. The STE behaviors dominating the luminant properties are optimized by tuning the Eu3+ doping. With increasing the doping levels x, more efficient energy transfer results in the enhanced Eu3+ luminescence with the STE emission fading, and the luminescence external quantum efficiency reaches an amazing value of 66.8 % as x = 0.09. The STE-emission decay curves show the energy transfer is realized by the exciton transmission from NbO43- groups to the Eu3+ ions. The Eu3+ doping results in the more isolated NbO4 tetrahedrons exerting larger location force to STEs, and then an orientational host-activator energy transfer can be form, accounting for the efficient light conversion. Since Eu3+ ions can capture some escaping STEs on thermal stimulus and obtain extra exciting energy to resist the thermal quenching, and the red emission also exhibits excellent thermal stability even at 478 K. These results suggest that the exciton-assisted energy transfer could initiate the exploration of new stably efficient red phosphors for the application in light conversion.

Abstract:In recent years, M (M = Al, Ga and In)-based fluoride red phosphors have received widespread attention. Herein, the red phosphors (NH4)2NaAlF6:Mn4+ (NNAFM), (NH4)2NaGaF6:Mn4+ (NNGFM) and (NH4)2NaInF6:Mn4+ (NNIFM) were synthesized by hydrothermal method, and characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy-dispersive X-ray spectrometers (EDS). Upon 470 nm light irradiation, the strongest emission peaks of (NH4)2NaMF6:Mn4+ red phosphors were at 637 nm (NNAFM), 636 nm (NNGFM) and 634 nm (NNIFM), respectively. This blue shift phenomenon with the increase of atomic radius was analyzed by crystal field and nephelauxetic effect. Besides, the concentration quenching mechanism, fluorescence lifetime and thermal stability were also discussed. Finally, three kinds of red phosphors were combined with blue chip and yellow phosphor (YAG:Ce3+) to form LED devices for improving their performance. The LED device (blue chip-YAG:Ce3+-NNGFM) possesses high color rendering index (Ra = 90.1), low correlated color temperature (3422 K) and luminous efficiency (41.23 lm W−1).

Abstract:In this study, we report the successful synthesis and thorough characterization of Eu3+-doped Na3Ba2LaNb10O30 phosphors, targeting their application in white-light-emitting diodes (w-LEDs). The phosphors were synthesized using a high-temperature solid-state method, ensuring robust incorporation of Eu3+ ions into the host lattice. Comprehensive analyses were performed, including X-ray diffraction (XRD), field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), energy-dispersive X-ray (EDX) spectroscopy, Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy and Raman spectroscopy, confirming the phase purity, crystallinity, morphology, and elemental composition of the phosphors. We have also studied the electronic structure using diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (DRS). Photoluminescence studies revealed strong red emissions under near-ultraviolet light excitation, with the optimal Eu3+ doping concentration identified to be 9 mol%. Quantum-yield measurements demonstrated high luminescence efficiency, while chromaticity coordinates indicated excellent color purity suitable for w-LED applications. These findings contribute significantly to the advancement of phosphor materials for solid-state lighting, suggesting promising prospects for their integration into commercial LED devices.

Abstract:A series of new composite perovskite Ba3In2-xWO9: xEu3+ red phosphors were synthesized by high-temperature solid-state reaction. The powder X-ray diffraction patterns, scanning electron microscope images, absorption spectrum, photoluminescence and thermal stability of Ba3In2-xWO9: xEu3+ were characterized and the CIE chromaticity coordinates, color purity and correlated color temperature value of Ba3In2−xWO9: xEu3+ were calculated. The results show that the absorption peaks of Ba3In2-xWO9: xEu3+ phosphors are at 350–500 nm, and the emission peaks are at 500–750 nm. The optimal doping is at x = 0.30. The energy quenching mechanism is the interaction of dipole–dipole. The phosphors have good thermal stability and the percentage luminescence intensity is 63.29% at 423 K of Ba3In1.7WO9: 0.3Eu3+, while the thermal quenching activation energy ΔE = 0.243 eV. The color coordinate of Ba3In1.7WO9: 0.3Eu3+ is calculated at (0.6293, 0.3651), and the color purity is 97.92%, which is excellent. All the results indicated that Ba3In2-xWO9: xEu3+ near-ultraviolet (394 nm) or blue-excited (464 nm) red phosphors have potential applications in white light-emitting diodes.
