Abstract:Series of Ca(La1−xEux)4Si3O13 red emitting phosphor were synthesized by solid-state reaction method. Photoluminescence excitation and emission spectra showed that the phosphors could be efficiently excited by near ultraviolet to blue light from 350 to 470nm to give bright red emission. There were four emission bands peaking at 591, 615, 655, and 700nm, due to the transition of the Eu3+ (5D0→7Fj (j=0, 1,2,3,4)), respectively. After using the 3.5% Li2CO3 as the flux, the sample's emission intensity increased obviously. White LED was obtained by combining blue LED chip (InGaN-based 460nm emitting) with Ca(La1−xEux)4Si3O13 and YAG:Ce3+. As the x has the value of 0.5, the InGaN-based Ca(La0.5Eu0.5)4Si3O13 WLED presented intense white emitting and good color rendering of over 89.

Abstract:Ba 3 CaSi 1.7 Al 0.3 O 8 : Eu, Mn white-emitting phosphor was prepared by solid reaction and X-ray powder diffraction (XRD) analysis confirmed the formation of Ba 3 CaSi 1.7 Al 0.3 O 8 : 0.1Eu, 0.1Mn. It was found experimentally that, its three-color emission peaks situated at 621, 491 and 435 nm respectively under excitation of 350-450nm irradiation. The 435nm and 491nm emission bands are attributed to 4f to 5d transition of Eu 2+ ions. The emission band peaking at 621nm originates from the 4 T 1 - 6 A 1 transition of Mn 2+ ions after the energy transferring from Eu 2+ to Mn 2+ ions. When the concentrations of the Al 3+ , Eu 2+ and Mn 2+ ions were 0.8 mol, 0.1mol and 0.1mol respectively, the sample presented intense white emitting. The addition of Al ion to the host leads to a substantial change of intensity ratio between blue to green emission.

Abstract:Ca9Gd(PO4)(7) and Ca9Gd(PO4)(7):xEu(2+), yMn(2+) were synthesized by solid-state reaction. The refinement confirmed that Ca9Gd(PO4)(7) belongs to space group R3c (No. 161) with unit cell parameters a = 10.4526 angstrom, c 37.3769 angstrom, V 3536.61 angstrom(3), and Z = 6. Upon the excitation from 250 to 430 nm, the Ca9Gd(PO4)(7):xEu(2+), yMn(2+) phosphors exhibit a broad blue-green emission band at 490 nm and a red emission band at 645 nm, which originate from the Eu2+ and Mn2+ ions, respectively. The varied emitted color from blue-green through white and eventually to red can be achieved by properly tuning the relative ratio of the Eu2+ to Mn2+ ions in the phosphors through the energy transfer from the Eu2+ and Mn2+ ions. The energy transfer from Eu2+ to Mn2+ was demonstrated to be a resonant type via a dipole-quadrupole reaction by the luminescence spectra, energy transfer efficiency, and decay curves of the phosphors. Furthermore, the critical distance of the Eu2+ and Mn2+ ions has also been calculated. More importantly, compared to the multiple emitting components of white LEDs system, single-emitting-component phosphors would enable easy fabrication with perfect stability and color reproducibility.

Abstract:A single-phase full-spectrum emission Ca9NaLu0.667(PO4)7 (CNLP):Eu2+ /Mn2+ phosphor was synthesized through the reaction to the solid state reaction at high temperature. CNLP:Eu2+ exhibits cyan light-emitting, and the luminous color of CNLP:Eu2+,Mn2+ has been adjusted from cyan then to white and finally to red by changing the content of Mn2+. The occupancy of Eu2+/Mn2+ was also analyzed by calculating the average bond length obtained using the Rietveld refinements. The energy transfer process (ET) of Eu2+ → Mn2+ was discussed in detail, and the ET efficiency could be as high as 77.81%. The internal quantum yield (QY) value of CNLP:2%Eu2+,3%Mn2+ is 49.51% at the excitation of 360 nm. CNLP:2%Eu2+,3%Mn2+ has a good thermostability. The white light-emitting diode (WLED) device showed warm white emission, which represented a low correlated color temperature (CCT) and high color rendering index (Ra). Moreover, the CCT and Ra remain within a certain range under different currents and temperatures, further demonstrating the potential application of WLEDs. These results prove that CNLP:2%Eu2+,1%Mn2+ phosphor has potential applications in the field of WLED.

Abstract:A series of white-light-emitting NaSrPO4:Eu2+, Mn2+ phosphors were successfully synthesized by solid-state reaction and their photoluminescence properties were investigated. The NaSrPO4:Eu2+, Mn2+ phosphor system exhibits a broad excitation band in the wavelength range of 250–420nm, which is well-matched with ultraviolet (UV) light-emitting-diode (LED) chips (typically 365nm). As a result of fine-tuning of the emission composition of the Eu2+ and Mn2+ ions, warm-white-light emission can be realized in a single host lattice under 365nm excitation. Efficient resonant energy transfer from the Eu2+ to Mn2+ ions has been observed. The energy transfer efficiency and critical distance were calculated. The results indicate that the developed phosphor can be used as a potential candidate for white LEDs.

Abstract:Red phosphor is indispensable to achieve warm white light in the white light diode (WLED) application. However, the current red phosphors suffer from high cost and harsh synthesis conditions. In this study, an oxide-based rare-earth-free red-emitting phosphor Li3Mg2NbO6:Mn4+ (LMN:Mn4+) has been successfully synthesized by a simple solid-state reaction method. The relationship between crystal structure and luminescence was investigated in detail. The site occupancy of the doping Mn4+ ion in the LMN host has been discussed from the point of bond valence sum. How the coordination environment of doping Mn4+ affects the energy level of doping Mn4+ ion has been illustrated via the Tanabe-Sugano energy-level diagram. Moreover, warm white light has been obtained using LMN:Mn4+ as compensator to the YAG:Ce3+.

Abstract:We obtained a single phase BLS:Eu2+, Ce3+, Mn2+ phosphor by solid-state reactions. Eu2+, Ce3+, and Mn2+ gives rise to the blue, green, and red emission, respectively. The Mn2+ red emission can be effectively enhanced via energy transfers from both Eu2+ and Ce3+. Thus a tunable full color emission from 410 to 750 nm was realized in this single phosphor. The Eu2+ -> Mn2+ energy transfer mechanism was investigated by the fluorescence decay curves. This single phosphor exhibits an efficient excitation band covering from 390 to 410 nm, which matches well with the emission light of the efficient NUV chips. The optimized BLS:Eu2+, Ce3+, Mn2+ phosphor shows a high quantum efficient of similar to 62% and a good color stability. When this single phosphor was combined with a 395 nm NUV-chip, an ideal white LED with a high color render index (CRI) of 85 and a correlated color temperature (CCT) of 6300 K was obtained. This demonstrates the promising application of the BLS:Eu2+, Ce3+, Mn2+ single phosphor for the NUV-based white LEDs. (C) 2016 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.
Governing the crystallographic sites for tuning Eu2+ emission in an apatite oxyfluoride host to be applied for superior white light emitting diodes

Abstract:Single white light-emitting phosphors for near-UV-converted white light-emitting diodes (WLEDs) are the best alternatives to tricolour phosphor blends and blue light converted yellow-emitting garnets. Nevertheless, achieving white light with elevated colour rendering (CRI) from a single-phase phosphor activated with a lone activator ion is a major challenge. This study aimed at the generation of white light from a single-phase composition activated only with europium. The study started with structural evaluations of Eu3+-activated Ca4La6Si6O24F2 phosphors using X-ray diffraction (XRD) and Eu3+ photoluminescence to elucidate the local environment of rare-earth ions and the symmetric nature of the lattice sites. Ca4La6Si6O24F2 crystallized in the hexagonal P63/m space group. The predominant 5D0-7F2 electric dipole transition at 614 nm, and the non-splitting as well as the zero-shifting behaviour of 5D0-7F0 at 578 nm, suggested that the rare-earth ionic substitutions preferably took place at the larger asymmetric sites. Introducing Sr2+ ions in Ca4La6Si6O24F2:Eu3+/Eu2+ that is synthesized under a reducing atmosphere suppressed Eu3+ emission. From the optimized Ca1.98Sr1.98La6Si6O24F2:0.04Eu2+, a sequence of M2+-codoped (M = Mg/Ba) Ca1.98Sr1.98La6Si6O24F2:0.04Eu2+ phosphors were further developed. The substitutions of Mg2+ and Ba2+ altered the crystal field by changing the lattice parameters. The Mg2+ -doped samples showed a blue-shift from 520 nm (Mg2+ = 0) to 471 nm (Mg2+ = 1.0), whereas the Ba2+-doped compositions showed a red-shift from 520 nm (Ba2+ = 0) to 536 nm (Ba2+ = 1.2). The change of symmetry owing to the Mg2+/Ba2+ substitution could have led to the centroid shift, which was responsible for the blue- or red-shift of the emission spectra. The XRD of Ca1.38Sr1.38La6Si6O24F2:0.04Eu2+,1.2Ba2+ indicated a Ba2+-induced lattice site expansion. Keeping this in view, the Eu2+ ions concentrations were further enhanced from 0.04 to 0.3, and the resultant photoluminescence was further enhanced and red-shifted. The optimized sample showed better intensity compared with the commercial Y3Al5O12:Ce3+ and exhibited decent photoluminescence above 70% at 150 °C as compared with that at room temperature. Finally, several prototype WLEDs were fabricated using the single phosphor Ca1.365Sr1.365La6Si6O24F2:0.07Eu2+,1.2Ba2+ with near-UV and violet-LED chips. The outcomes indicated the promising nature of this single-composition phosphor for indoor lighting.

Abstract:Based on crystal site engineering, a series of inorganic Ba9Lu2Si6O24: Eu2+ (BLSO: Eu2+) and Ba9Lu2Si6O24:Eu2+, Mn2+ phosphors were synthesized. These phosphors exhibit broad emission throughout the whole visible spectrum range. More specifically, a systematic cation substitution favored efficient energy transfer. Hence, the produced Ba9Lu2−zSczSi6O24: 0.2Eu2+, 0.4Mn2+ (BLSSO: 0.2Eu2+, 0.4Mn4+) were effective single-phase white-light-emitting phosphors. Particularly, Ba9Lu2Si6O24: Eu2+ phosphors emit a broadband blue emission peaking at 462 nm with a long tail. The results of the emission spectrum's Gaussian fitting (and deconvolution), low-temperature photoluminescence, and decay time observations point to the existence of many luminescence centers in the host lattice of BLSO. Partial cation substitution favors the occupation of Eu2+ ions in other available crystallographic sites, i.e., Ba(2) and Ba(3), resulting in the emission spectrum broadening in the green spectral region. The energy transfer from the doped Eu2+ to the co-doped Mn2+ ions broadens the emission in the red spectral region (618 nm). Accordingly, the broadband emission covers the entire visible spectral region. Furthermore, the make-up of these phosphors provides a powerful method for obtaining continuous tuning throughout the whole visible spectrum. The above features, in conjunction with the color coordinates and the remarkable thermal stability, qualify the optimized Ba9Lu2−zSczSi6O24: 0.2Eu2+, 0.4Mn2+ phosphor for potential use in single-phase white-light-emitting phosphors.

Abstract:High-brightness red-emitting Ca2LnHf2Al3O12:Eu3+ (Ln = Lu, Y and Gd) garnet phosphors with high photoluminescence efficiency are demonstrated for application in white light-emitting diodes (LEDs), and they have been successfully prepared using a high-temperature solid-state method. X-ray diffraction, field-emission scanning electron microscopy, energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, elemental mapping, photoluminescence excitation and photoluminescence spectra, decay lifetimes, photoluminescence quantum yield and temperature-dependent emission spectra have been used to characterize these samples. Under near-ultraviolet excitation into the 7F0→5L6 transition of Eu3+ at 394 nm, the Ca2LnHf2Al3O12:Eu3+ (Ln = Lu, Y and Gd) samples produce the characteristic red emissions of Eu3+ ions with peaks around 591, 611, 656, and 709 nm, corresponding to the 5D0→7F1, 5D0→7F2, 5D0→7F3, and 5D0→7F4 transitions. These samples exhibit significant concentration-dependent luminescence behaviors, and the highest emission intensity is achieved at 50 mol% Eu3+ doping concentration owing to the concentration quenching effect caused by the dipole-dipole interaction between neighboring Eu3+ activators. The CIE color coordinates of these optimal Ca2LnHf2Al3O12:50%Eu3+ (Ln = Lu, Y and Gd) phosphors are (0.6339, 0.3654), (0.6341, 0.3653), and (0.6343, 0.3651), along with respective color purity of 92.4%, 92.6%, and 92.6%. The photoluminescence quantum yields of Ca2LnHf2Al3O12:50%Eu3+ are determined to be 39.2%, 56.6%, and 53.3% for Ln = Lu, Y, Gd, respectively. A white LED device has been fabricated through utilizing the Ca2YHf2Al3O12:50%Eu3+ phosphor as red-emitting color converter, which generates bright warm-white light with high color rendering index (80.8), low correlated color temperature (3920 K), CIE chromaticity coordinates (0.3827, 0.3742), and high luminous efficacy (11.56 lmW−1) under 40 mA driving current.

Abstract:A single host phosphor Ca3(SiO3)3:Eu2+, Mn2+ (CSO: Eu2+, Mn2+) with good monodispersity has been synthesized by high temperature solid state reaction combined with precursor, using porous silica as template and raw material. The phase, size and surface morphology of the phosphor were measured by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Luminescence properties were characterized by photoluminescence excitation (PLE) and emission spectra from room temperature to 480 K. CSO: Eu2+ has strong excitation band in UV region and emits blue light. To compensate for the lack of orange-red emission region and avoid using multiple phosphors, Mn2+ ions are introduced into the Ca2+ sites. The remarkable enhancements of the orange band attributed to an efficient nonradioactive energy transfer from Eu2+ to Mn2+, which has been testified by the photoluminescence spectra and fluorescence decay dynamics. The emitting light of Eu2+, Mn2+ co-doped CSO could be modulated from cool white to warm white by changing the molar ratio of Eu2+ and Mn2+.

Abstract:A series of Eu2+/Dy3+ single doped and co-doped Na3Sc2(PO4)(3) phosphors were synthesized by the high temperature solid-state method, and their phase, morphology, and luminescence properties were characterized. Under the excitation of 370 nm, the Na3Sc2(PO4)(3):Eu2+,Dy3+ phosphor can emit white light whose spectrum is composed of a broad emission band centered at 460 nm and the other three peaks at 483, 577, and 672 nm, respectively. There is energy transfer from Eu2+ to Dy3+ ion in Na3Sc2(PO4)(3):Eu2+,Dy3+ phosphor due to the good overlap between the emission spectrum of Na3Sc2(PO4)(3):Eu2+ and the excitation spectrum of Na3Sc2(PO4)(3):Dy3+, which is further confirmed by the fluorescence lifetime decrease of Eu2+ ion with the increase of Dy3+ concentration. The process of energy transfer is via dipole-quadruple interaction which is confirmed by applying Dexter's theory. By increasing the Dy3+ concentration, the color coordinates of the the Na3Sc2(PO4)3:0.01Eu(2+),xDy(3+) phosphors can be adjusted from blue to white, and then to yellow. The optimized concentration of Dy3+ ions is 4.0 mol%, beyond which the concentration quenching will take place. The Na3Sc2(PO4)(3):Eu2+,Dy3+ phosphor shows fairly good resistance to thermal quenching behavior, of which the emission intensity at 423 K can maintain 90.3% of the initial value (298 K). These results suggest that the Na3Sc2(PO4)(3):0.01Eu(2+),xDy(3+) phosphors have potential applications as the color-tunable or a singlephase white emitting phosphor in white LEDs.@ 2021 Published by Elsevier B.V. on behalf of Chinese Society of Rare Earths.

Abstract:Solid-solution based luminescent materials have been widely explored due to their tunable optical properties in recent years. In this work, instead of more common cation-substitution approach, we investigated the luminescence properties of Eu2+ and Mn2+ co-doped halophosphate solid solution Ca5(PO4)3(F0.8Cl0.2) via anion substitution synthesized by high temperature solid state reaction method. The formation of the solid solution was confirmed by X-ray diffraction (XRD) characterization, which indicates that the introduction of certain proportion of Cl− will not make significant change on the Ca5(PO4)3F lattice. We also studied the energy transfer from Eu2+ to Mn2+ in the host so as to obtain white light emission via adjusting the doping concentrations of Eu2+ and Mn2+. The white light emission was achieved through combination of Eu2+ blue emission and Mn2+ red-orange emission with appropriate proportions. The results suggest that Ca5(PO4)3(F0.8Cl0.2):0.01Eu2+,0.18Mn2+ could be a potential WLED phosphor working under ultraviolet excitation.
A single Eu2+-activated high-color-rendering oxychloride white-light phosphor for white-light-emitting diodes

Abstract:Single-phased, high-color-rendering index (CRI) white-light phosphors are emerging as potential phosphor-converted white-light-emitting diodes (WLEDs) and as an alternative to blends of tricolor phosphors. However, it is a challenge to create a high CRI white light from a single-doped activator. Here, we present a high CRI (Ra = 91) white-light phosphor, Sr5(PO4)3-x(BO3)xCl:Eu2+, composed of Sr5(PO4)3Cl as the beginning member and Sr5(BO3)3Cl as the end member. This work utilized the solid-solution method, and tunable Eu2+ emission was achieved. Color-tunable Eu2+ emissions in response to structural variation were observed in Sr5(PO4)3-x(BO3)xCl solid solutions. This was further confirmed using X-ray Rietveld refinement, electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy, and in the photoluminescence spectra. The color-tunable emissions included the white light that originated from the combination of the blue emission of Sr5(PO4)3Cl:Eu2+ and an induced Eu2+ yellow emission at approximately 550 nm in the solid solution. Importantly, the white-light phosphors showed a greater R9 = 90.2 under excitation at 365 nm. This result has rarely been reported in the literature and is greater than that of (R9 = 14.3) commercial Y3Al5O12:Ce3+-based WLEDs. These findings demonstrate the great potential of Sr5(PO4)3-x(BO3)xCl:0.04Eu2+ as a white-light phosphor for near-UV phosphor-converted WLEDs. These results also provide a shortcut for developing a high CRI white-light phosphor from a single Eu2+-doped compound.

Abstract:Ca19(1-x)M2(PO4)14:19xEu3+ (M = Mg, Zn) (x = 0.05, 0.07, 0.09, 0.10, 0.11 and 0.12) red phosphors were successfully synthesized by the high-temperature solid-phase reaction method. The phase composition, morphology and characteristic photoluminescence properties of Ca19Mg2(PO4)14 (CMPO):Eu3+ and Ca19Zn2(PO4)14 (CZPO):Eu3+ were analyzed by X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM) and photoluminescence spectroscopy. The photoluminescence excitation (PLE) and emission (PL) spectra of both samples indicate that the phosphors can be effectively excited by ultraviolet (UV) and blue light, and also it is shown that the electric-dipole transition of Eu3+ is dominant. The typical concentration quenching occurs when Eu3+-doping concentrations of both phosphors exceed 10 mol%, and the PL intensity of CZPO:0.10Eu3+ sample is 1.65 times that of CMPO:0.10Eu3+. Furthermore, the infrared spectra (IR), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA) curves, ultraviolet–visible diffuse reflectance spectra (UV–Vis DRS), thermal stability, chromaticity coordinates (CIE) and correlated color temperature (CCT) of Ca19M2(PO4)14:Eu3+ phosphors were evaluated in detail. The band gaps of CMPO and CZPO hosts were equal to 6.46 and 6.39 eV, respectively. The I 423K/I 298K values of CMPO:Eu3+ and CZPO:Eu3+ phosphors are as high as 73.89% and 88.29%. The chromaticity coordinates of Ca19(1-x)M2(PO4)14:19xEu3+ (M = Mg, Zn) phosphors locate in red region, and the color purity values of CMPO:Eu3+ and CZPO:Eu3+ are determined to be 99.82% and 99.61%, respectively. To sum up, the phosphors are considered as the potential luminescence materials for use in white light emitting diodes (w-LEDs).

Abstract:The phosphor-converted white light-emitting diodes (pc-WLEDs) have been regarded as a promising alternative to the traditional light source in the fields of lighting and display. Herein, Ca9−xSrxNd(PO4)7: Eu2+ phosphor with moderately broadband ed emission was successfully designed and synthesized based on Ca9Nd(PO4)7. The X-ray diffraction (XRD) patterns ensure the phase purity of the materials. Further XRD Rietveld refinements were performed to shed light on the Sr/Ca substitution impact and the site occupations induced by intentionally introduced Sr. The site strategy was proved to be feasible along with the Sr/Ca3 and sequentially Eu/Sr preferable occupations, which leads to confined regulation of the Eu luminescent in the host. Theoretical simulations based on density functional theory (DFT) suggest a good potential of the materials as hosting matrices of Eu2+ before and after Sr/Ca substitution, while the site preference was proved from the theoretical aspect as well. At last, the materials were coated onto a near-ultraviolet (n-UV) commercial LED chip to fabricate a pc-WLED with warm white-light emission and high color rendering index (Ra). The prototype pc-WLED also survived a long-term stability test and current-dependent test to show great potential in practical application.
