Nuclear Fusion

Abstract:Over the past two years noteworthy experimental and theoretical progress has been made towards the top-level scientific question for the U.S. program in Heavy Ion Fusion Science and High Energy Density Physics: ''How can heavy ion beams be compressed to the high intensity required to create high energy density matter and fusion conditions''? [1]. New results in transverse and longitudinal beam compression, beam-target interaction, high-brightness transport, beam production, as well as a new scheme in beam acceleration will be reported. Longitudinal and Transverse Beam Compression: The Neutralized Transport Experiment (NTX) demonstrated transverse beam density enhancement by a factor greater than 100 when an otherwise space-charge dominated ion beam was neutralized by a plasma source [2]. This experiment was followed by the Neutralized Drift Compression Experiment (NDCX) in which an ion beam was longitudinally compressed by a factor of 50 [3]. This was accomplished by applying a linear head-to-tail velocity ''tilt'' to the beam, and then allowing the beam to drift through a meter-long neutralizing plasma. In both the transverse and longitudinal experiments, extensive 3-D simulations, using LSP, were carried out, and the agreement with experiments was excellent [4]. A three-dimensional kinetic model for longitudinal compression was developed, and it was shown that the Vlasov equation possesses a class of exact solutions for the problem [5]. Beam-Target Interaction: We have also made significant progress in identifying the unique role ion beams can play in heating material to warm dense matter (WDM) conditions. We have identified promising accelerator, beam, and target configurations, as well as new experiments on material properties. It is shown that the target temperature uniformity can be maximized if the ion energy at target corresponds to the maximum in the energy loss rate dE/dX [6]. Ions of moderate energy (a few to tens of MeV) may be used. The energy must be deposited in times much shorter than the hydrodynamic expansion time (ns for metallic foams at 0.01 to 0.1 times solid density). Hydrodynamic simulations [7] have confirmed that uniform conditions with temperature variations of less than a few per cent can be achieved. High-Brightness Transport: Unwanted electrons can lead to deleterious effects for high-brightness ion beam transport. We are studying electron accumulation in quadrupole and solenoid beam transport systems. Electrons can originate from background gas ionization, from beam-tubes struck by ions near grazing incidence, and from end-walls struck by ions near normal incidence [8]. In parallel with the experimental campaign, we have developed and implemented in WARP 3D a new approach to large time-step advancement of electron orbits, as well as a comprehensive suite of models for electrons, gas, and wall interactions [9]. If sufficient electrons are accumulated within the beam, severe distortion of the beam phase space can result. Simulations of this effect have reproduced the key features observed in the experiments. Beam Production: The merging-beamlet injector experiment recently completed demonstrates the feasibility of a compact, high-current injector for heavy ion fusion drivers. In our experiment, 119 argon ion beamlets at 400 keV beam energy were merged into an electrostatic quadrupole channel to form a single beam of 70 mA. The measured unnormalized transverse emittance (phase space area) of 200-250 mm-mrad for the merged beam met fusion driver requirement. These measurements are in good agreement with our particle-in-cell simulations using WARP3D [10]. We have also completed the physics design of a short-pulse injector suitable for WDM studies. Beam Acceleration: A new concept for acceleration, the Pulse Line Ion Accelerator PLIA [11], offers the potential of a very low cost accelerator for WDM studies. It is based on a traveling wave structure, using a simple geometry with a helical conductor. We have obtained experimental verification of the predicted PLIA beam dynamics. Measured energy gain, longitudinal phase space, and beam bunching are in good agreement with WARP3D simulations. Computational Models and Simulator Experiments: The pioneering merger of Adaptive Mesh Refinement and particle-in-cell methods [12] underlies much of the recent success of WARP3D. BEST, the Beam Equilibrium Stability and Transport code was optimized for massively parallel computers and applied to studies of the collective effects of 3D bunched beams [13] and the temperature-anisotropy instability [14]. Space-charge-dominated beam physics experiments relevant to long-path accelerators were carried out on the recently completed University of Maryland Electron Ring, and on the Paul Trap Simulator Experiment at PPPL.

Abstract:Particle Accelerator Physics-Helmut Wiedemann 2013-11-11 Particle Accelerator Physics covers the dynamics of relativistic particle beams, basics of particle guidance and focusing, lattice design, characteristics of beam transport systems and circular accelerators. Particle-beam optics is treated in the linear approximation including sextupoles to correct for chromatic aberrations. Perturbations to linear beam dynamics are analyzed in detail and correction measures are discussed, while basic lattice design features and building blocks leading to the design of more complicated beam transport systems and circular accelerators are studied. Characteristics of synchrotron radiation and quantum effects due to the statistical emission of photons on particle trajectories are derived and applied to determine particle-beam parameters. The discussions specifically concentrate on relativistic particle beams and the physics of beam optics in beam transport systems and circular accelerators such as synchrotrons and storage rings. This book forms a broad basis for further, more detailed studies of nonlinear beam dynamics and associated accelerator physics problems, discussed in the subsequent volume.

Abstract:The evaluation and accurate understanding of the cause of collective effects and the related instabilities using corrective measures, which may limit the achievable current per bunch, is significant for a prosperous design of charged particle accelerators. We describe in detail two dominant collective effects, i.e. space-charge and wakefield effects for a multi-bend achromat (MBA) storage ring lattice under design. We have developed a detailed impedance model, which is used to study the beam dynamics, including the wakefield effects. The beam coupling impedances due to the wakefields were calculated to construct a coupling impedance database, with the wakefields of each vacuum component being maintained in a standard format. The Self-Describing Data Sets (SDDS) toolkit was used to calculate the wake potentials for all coupling impedance contributing vacuum components, to be used for an ultra-low emittance lattice design. The ELEGANT code was utilized for the particle tracking in an element-by-element procedure along the lattice. A bunch with the Gaussian distribution was assumed to calculate the model for a distributed resistive-wall impedance and the impedance generated by geometrical discontinuities for the various accelerator elements. Moreover, we evaluated the potential-well distortion effect due to longitudinal phase space motion for a system of electron bunches. The collective effects in multi-particle systems have been evaluated for the estimation of the beam instability with more accurate results, defined by their sources in the designed lattice and describing their effects on beam instabilities with remarkable consequences like energy loss and betatron tune shift.

Simulation of a cascaded longitudinal space charge amplifier for broadband radiation production using a superconducting linac

Abstract:Longitudinal space charge (LSC) effects are generally considered harmful in free-electron lasers as they can seed unfavorable energy modulations that can result in density modulations with associated emittance dilution. It was pointed out, however, that such "micro-bunching instabilities" could be potentially useful to support the generation of broadband coherent radiation. Therefore there has been an increasing interest in devising accelerator beam lines capable of controlling LSC induced density modulations. In the present paper we augment these previous investigations by combining a grid-less space charge algorithm with the popular particle-tracking program Elegant. This high-fidelity model of the space charge is used to benchmark conventional LSC models. We finally employ the developed model to optimize the performance of a cascaded longitudinal space charge amplifier using beam parameters comparable to the ones achievable at Fermilab Accelerator Science & Technology (FAST) facility currently under commissioning at Fermilab.

Abstract:Key scientific results from recent experiments, modeling tools, and heavy ion accelerator research are summarized that explore ways to investigate the properties of high energy density matter in heavy-ion-driven targets, in particular, strongly-coupled plasmas at 0.01 to 0.1 times solid density for studies of warm dense matter, which is a frontier area in high energy density physics. Pursuit of these near-term objectives has resulted in many innovations that will ultimately benefit heavy ion inertial fusion energy. These include: neutralized ion beam compression and focusing, which hold the promise of greatly improving the stage between the accelerator and the target chamber in a fusion power plant; and the Pulse Line Ion Accelerator (PLIA), which may lead to compact, low-cost modular linac drivers.
Space charge dominated momentum spread and compensation strategies in the post-linac section of Proton Improvement Plan-II at Fermilab

Abstract:The upcoming Proton Improvement Plan-II (PIP-II), designated for enhancements to the Fermilab accelerator complex, features a new 800 MeV superconducting linac and a Beam Transfer Line (BTL) to transport the beam to the existing Booster synchrotron. To mitigate the space charge tune shift associated with a high intensity accumulated beam, the low emittance linac beam is used to paint the ring phase space both transversely and longitudinally. To prevent losses caused by particles injected outside the rf separatrix while painting longitudinal phase space, the momentum spread of the incoming beam should not exceed 2.1 x 10^-4. Detailed simulations showed that due to space charge, the rms momentum spread increases to 4 x 10^-4 while it is transported in the BTL --about twice the allowable limit. In this paper, we outline a mitigation strategy involving a debuncher cavity. We discuss location, operating frequency, and gap voltage under both nominal and perturbed beam conditions, specifically accounting for momentum jitter. The impact of cavity misalignments is also assessed. The paper concludes by recommending an optimized configuration.

Abstract:The new injector SSC-LINAC is under design and construction to improve the efficiency and intensity of beams for the Separated-Sector Cyclotron (SSC). This will be accomplished with a normal conducting radio-frequency quadrupole (RFQ) accelerator. To match with the SSC, the RFQ must be operated on Continuous Wave (CW) mode with a frequency of 53.667 MHz. A four-rod structure was adopted for small dimensions of the cavity. While, it was a huge challenge on CW mode. A multi-physics theoretical analysis, including RF, thermal, structural and frequency shift coupling analysis, have been completed in response to the safe and stable operation of the RFQ. The experimental measurement of frequency shift has been also completed, which is consistent with the simulation. In this paper, the results of theoretical analysis and experiment are reported in detail.

Abstract:A superconducting linac has been proposed and under constructed to demonstrate the key technology and the feasibility for CIADS(China Initiative Accelerator Driven System)linac. This linac will accelerate the 10mA proton beam to 25MeV. There are some challenges in the physics design for the high power superconducting accelerator. In this paper, we focus on the matching between different cryomodules (CMs) and the frequency jump. This paper presents the physics design study together with the design principles and the simulation results with machine errors.

Abstract:We present the design of a high repetition rate MeV energy ultrafast electron diffraction instrument based on a dc photoelectron gun and an superconducting rf (SRF) linac with multiple independently controlled accelerating and bunching cavities. The design is based on the existing Cornell photoinjector, which can readily be applied to the presented findings. Using particle tracking simulations in conjunction with multiobjective genetic algorithm optimization, we explore the smallest bunch lengths, emittance, and probe spot sizes achievable. We present results for both stroboscopic conditions (with single electrons per pulse) and with 105 electrons/bunch which may be suitable for single-shot diffraction images. In the stroboscopic case, the flexibility provided by the many-cavity bunching and acceleration allows for longitudinal phase space linearization without a higher harmonic field, providing sub-fs bunch lengths at the sample. Given low emittance photoemission conditions, these small bunch lengths can be maintained with probe transverse sizes at the single micron scale and below. In the case of 105 electrons per pulse, we simulate state-of-the-art 5D brightness conditions: rms bunch lengths of 10 fs with 3-nm normalized emittances, while now permitting repetition rates as high as 1.3 GHz. Abstract:As part of the Snowmass'21 community planning excercise, the Advanced Accelerator Concepts (AAC) community proposed future linear colliders with center-of-mass energies up to 15 TeV and luminosities up to 50$\times10^{34}$ cm$^{-2}$s$^{-1}$ in a compact footprint. In addition to being compact, these machines must also be energy efficient. We identify two challenges that must be addressed in the design of these machines. First, the Beam Delivery System (BDS) must not add significant length to the accelerator complex. Second, beam parameters must be chosen to mitigate beamstrahlung effects and maximize the luminosity-per-power of the machine. In this paper, we review advances in plasma lens technology that will help to reduce the length of the BDS system and we detail new Particle-in-Cell simulation studies that will provide insight into beamstrahlung mitigation techniques. We apply our analysis to both $e^+e^-$ and $\gamma\gamma$ colliders.

Abstract:Future ultralow emittance rings for e−/e+ colliders require extremely high beam brightness and can thus be limited by collective effects. In this paper, the interplay of effects such as synchrotron radiation, intrabeam scattering (IBS), and space charge in the vicinity of excited betatron resonances is assessed. In this respect, two algorithms were developed to simulate IBS and synchrotron radiation effects and integrated in the p y orbit tracking code, to be combined with its widely used space charge module. The impact of these effects on the achievable beam parameters of the Compact Linear Collider (CLIC) damping rings was studied, showing that synchrotron radiation damping mitigates the adverse effects of IBS and space charge induced resonance crossing. The studies include also a full dynamic simulation of the CLIC damping ring cycle starting from the injection beam parameters. It is demonstrated that a careful working point choice is necessary, in order to accommodate the transition from detuning induced by lattice nonlinearities to space-charge dominated detuning and thereby avoid excessive losses and emittance growth generated in the vicinity of strong resonances. https://doi.org/10.1103/PhysRevAccelBeams.27.064403 Published by the American Physical Society under the terms of the Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International license. Abstract:The China initiative Accelerator-Driven subcritical System (CiADS) project aims to design and build the world's first accelerator-driven subcritical system demonstration facility. The facility will attain 2.5 MW thermal power in 2026 to realize accelerator-target-reactor coupling experiments. As the first approved accelerator-driven subcritical system facility, the CiADS driver linac will adopt cutting-edge accelerator technologies to achieve the challenging goals of high beam power and high reliability. The accelerator will operate in cw mode to produce a 500 MeV, 5 mA proton beam. To meet the extremely high demands on beam availability, the linac design lays strong emphasis on beam loss control and increased fault tolerance via a novel fault-compensation method. The accelerator complex consists of a room temperature front-end section, a main linac that employs superconducting accelerator technologies, and a high-energy beam transport line. Abstract:Intense ion beams offer an attractive approach to heating dense matter uniformly to extreme conditions, because their energy deposition is nearly classical and volumetric. Simultaneous transverse and longitudinal beam compression in a neutralizing plasma medium, along with rapid beam acceleration, are being studied as a means of generating such beams for warm dense matter (WDM) and high energy density physics (HEDP) experiments, as well as for inertial fusion. Recent experiments on transverse and longitudinal compression demonstrated significant enhancements in beam intensity. In parallel with the beam compression studies, a new accelerator concept, the Pulse Line Ion Accelerator (PLIA), potentially offers cost-effective high-gradient ion beam acceleration at high line charge density. We describe experimental results on beam neutralization, and neutralized drift compression from a series of experiments. We also describe first the beam dynamics validation experiments exploring the PLIA.

Abstract:The concept and designs of plasma-based advanced accelerators for high energy physics and photon science are modelled in the SciDAC COMPASS project with a suite of Particle-In-Cell codes and simulation techniques including the full electromagnetic model, the envelope model, the boosted frame approach and the quasi-static model. In this paper, we report the progress of the development of these models and techniques and present recent results achieved with large-scale parallel PIC simulations. The simulation needs for modelling the plasma-based advanced accelerator at the energy frontier is discussed and a path towards this goal is outlined.

Abstract:The Circular Electron Positron Collider is a double ring lepton collider covering beam energy from 45 GeV (Z) to 180 GeV (tt-bar). Beam coupling impedance and the collective effects that are triggered by the impedance are important subjects when targeting high machine performance of an electron positron collider. A robust impedance model is required for the instabilities evaluations as well as to investigate their possible mitigations. Meanwhile, a thorough investigation on the collective effects is essential to identify the critical issues on the beam instabilities. In this paper, a detailed impedance model has been built for the collider ring and dominant impedance contributors have been identified by evaluating the effective impedances. The potential collective instabilities driven by the impedance are also discussed.

Interplay of Space Charge and Intra-Beam Scattering in the LHC ion injector chain

Abstract:The ion injectors of the CERN accelerator chain, in particular the Super Proton Synchrotron (SPS) and the Low Energy Ion Ring (LEIR), operate in a strong Space Charge (SC) and Intra-Beam Scattering (IBS) regime, which can degrade beam quality. Optimizing the ion beam performance requires thus to study the interplay of these two effects in tracking simulations by incorporating both SC and IBS effects interleaved with lattice non-linearities. In this respect, the kinetic theory approach of treating IBS effects has been deployed. A new, modified approach has been introduced using the formalism of the Bjorken and Mtingwa model and the complete integrals of the second kind for faster numerical evaluation. This IBS kick is implemented in PyORBIT and extensive benchmarking cases against analytical models are shown. Results of combined space charge and intra-beam scattering simulations for the SPS and LEIR are presented and compared with observations from beam measurements.

Abstract:This document presents the initial scientific case for upgrading the Continuous Electron Beam Accelerator Facility (CEBAF) at Jefferson Lab (JLab) to 22 GeV. It is the result of a community effort, incorporating insights from a series of workshops conducted between March 2022 and April 2023. With a track record of over 25 years in delivering the world's most intense and precise multi-GeV electron beams, CEBAF's potential for a higher energy upgrade presents a unique opportunity for an innovative nuclear physics program, which seamlessly integrates a rich historical background with a promising future. The proposed physics program encompass a diverse range of investigations centered around the nonperturbative dynamics inherent in hadron structure and the exploration of strongly interacting systems. It builds upon the exceptional capabilities of CEBAF in high-luminosity operations, the availability of existing or planned Hall equipment, and recent advancements in accelerator technology. The proposed program cover various scientific topics, including Hadron Spectroscopy, Partonic Structure and Spin, Hadronization and Transverse Momentum, Spatial Structure, Mechanical Properties, Form Factors and Emergent Hadron Mass, Hadron-Quark Transition, and Nuclear Dynamics at Extreme Conditions, as well as QCD Confinement and Fundamental Symmetries. Each topic highlights the key measurements achievable at a 22 GeV CEBAF accelerator. Furthermore, this document outlines the significant physics outcomes and unique aspects of these programs that distinguish them from other existing or planned facilities. In summary, this document provides an exciting rationale for the energy upgrade of CEBAF to 22 GeV, outlining the transformative scientific potential that lies within reach, and the remarkable opportunities it offers for advancing our understanding of hadron physics and related fundamental phenomena.

Abstract:A new linear accelerator system, called the SSC-Linac injector, is being designed at HIRFL (the heavy ion research facility of Lanzhou). As part of the SSC-Linac, the medium energy beam transport (MEBT) consists of seven magnetic quadrupoles, a re-buncher and a diagnose box. The total length of this segment is about 1.75 m. The beam dynamics simulation in MEBT has been studied using the TRACK 3D particle-in-cell code, and the simulation result shows that the beam accelerated from the radio frequency quadrupole (RFQ) matches well with the acceptance of the following drift tube linac (DTL) in both the transverse and longitudinal phase spaces, and that most of the particles can be captured by the final sector focusing cyclotron for further acceleration. The longitudinal emittance of the RFQ and the longitudinal acceptance of the DTL was calculated in detail, and a multi-particle beam dynamics simulation from the ion source to the end of the DTL was done to verify the original design.
