Abstract:The present contribution will focus on recent advanced transmission electron microscopy studies of Ni-Ti based alloys with the emphasis on features related to the martensitic transformation. The examples range from the atomic scale when looking at the atomic structure of a precipitate to the micron scale when looking at the configuration of these precipitates or to twin configurations in particular ternary alloys. An example of the first is the refinement of the atomic structure of a Ni4Ti3 precipitate formed in Ni-rich Ni-Ti alloys to enhance the shape memory behaviour. A slice-and-view study to obtain the 3D configuration of these precipitates is an example of the latter. Some other examples will be discussed as well.

Abstract:The recent development of bulk ultrafine grained TiNi-based shape memory alloys is introduced, including methods of severe plastic deformation, the martensitic phase transformation behavior, and the mechanical, shape memory and superelastic properties. The present biomedical and engineering applications are also reviewed. Finally, the prospective research directions of bulk ultrafine grained TiNi-based shape memory alloys in the future are forecasted.

Abstract:TiNiCu shape memory alloy melt-spun ribbons have attracted much attention as one of promising microactuator materials due to their narrow transformation hysteresis, excellent shape memory effect and superelasticity and good thermal cycling stability. In present work, the recent development of TiNiCu melt-spun ribbons is comprehensively summarized, including crystallization behavior, microstructure, martensitic transformation behavior, shape memory effect and superelasticity. The emphasis is paid on the processing-microstructure-property relationship. Some important issues on the TiNiCu melt-spun ribbons are discussed.

Abstract:Nickel-titanium alloys have been widely used in biomedical, aerospace and other fields due to their shape memory effect, superelastic effect, as well as biocompatible and elasto-thermal properties. Additive manufacturing (AM) technology can form complex and fine structures, which greatly expands the application range of Ni-Ti alloy. In this study, the development trend of additive manufactured Ni-Ti alloy was analyzed. Subsequently, the most widely used selective laser melting (SLM) process for forming Ni-Ti alloy was summarized. Especially, the relationship between Ni-Ti alloy materials, SLM processing parameters, microstructure and properties of Ni-Ti alloy formed by SLM was revealed. The research status of Ni-Ti alloy formed by wire arc additive manufacturing (WAAM), electron beam melting (EBM), directional energy dedication (DED), selective laser sintering (SLS) and other AM processes was briefly described, and its mechanical properties were emphatically expounded. Finally, several suggestions concerning Ni-Ti alloy material preparation, structure design, forming technology and forming equipment in the future were put forward in order to accelerate the engineering application process of additive manufactured Ni-Ti alloy. This study provides a useful reference for scientific research and engineering application of additive manufactured Ni-Ti alloys.

Abstract:The development, application and related industry state of the nickel-titanium alloys in the past 40 years were reviewed. The nickel-titanium alloys have been extensively used in the fields of aerospace, machinery, electronics, chemistry, energy sources, architecture and daily life due to their excellent mechanical property, corrosion resistance, shape memory effect, superelasticity, damping property and biocompatibility. Overviewing the global NiTi industry, the oversea market gets the major profits from the superelastic interventional products instead of the engineering and commodity products, and a good industry structure has been established for the primary materials, semi-products, final products manufacturing. The international market for NiTi products are promising. For the domestic shape memory alloys industry, the fundamental research works have been done very well, and a healthy development can be realized through making a close cooperation relations between enterprises and avoiding the malignant competition.

Abstract:Nitinol (nickel-titanium or Ni-Ti) is one of the most utilized alloys exhibiting the Shape Memory Effect, which makes it possible to use it in many applications, such as aerospace, automotive, biomedical and others. The development of Additive Manufacturing technologies allows creating the latest time-dependent 4D products from nitinol that can realize the Shape Memory Effect after 3D-printing, which in the future will further increase the use of nitinol. However, processing nitinol is highly sensitive to compositional and thermal changes, affecting the final phase structure and thus temperature of the martensitic transformation. This paper presents a review of various effects of composition and 3D-printing process parameters on changes in transformation characteristics, as well as possible methods for their prevention and post-process heat treatments. It is reported that only by precise process and temperature control it is possible to create 4D products with the ability to realize the multi-stage shape memory effect. Finally, the paper discusses the various application of 3D-printed Nitinol and its advantages as compared to conventional processing routes.

Abstract:The amorphous NiTi thin films were fabricated by dc/ac magnetron sputtering.Mechanical properties of 51.6%Ni-Ti thin films annealed at 550 ℃ for 0.5 h were studied. Bend deformation and stress/strain experimental results indicated that the free-standing NiTi thin films have good shape memory effect, and the recovery rate of shape memory was nearly 100%. The shape memory properties of the film and bulk NiTi alloy are approximately at the same level.

Abstract:Today, due to its unique mechanical properties, durability and biocompatibility, applications of Nitinol in a wide variety of medical implants are progressively increasing [1–3]. However, as Nitinol consists of about 50 at. % Ni, certain applications are still hindered by the concern of free Ni release in the surrounding tissue. It is known that the biocompatibility of the implants made from TiNi alloys depends on a corrosion resistant titanium oxide layer avoiding the severe toxicological and allergic responses of Ni. The latter is controlled by the structure of (near-) surface layers which can strongly be affected by various surface treatments [3,4]. In this present work, the oxide surface of an as-received Nitinol micro-wire is investigated by different TEM techniques. FIB was used to prepare near surface cross-section sample.

Abstract:Most of shape memory alloys are functional intermetallics. They are now practically being used for couplings, actuators, medical guide wires etc., and are hopeful candidates for smart materials, which already exist. In the present paper, recent developments within nearly 10 years on shape memory alloys and martensitic: transformations, on which shape memory effect and superelasticity are based, were concisely reviewed. Since Ti–Ni alloys are the best practical shape memory alloys, we mostly discussed on the alloys, but we discussed more general problems as well. Furthermore, we discussed the ductility and density of point defects in intermetallics, since they are important problems in intermetallics in general. At the end we introduced some recent applications of shape memory alloys briefly.

Abstract:Compared with the common additive manufacturing techniques, the vacuum operating environment and high deposition efficiency of wire-based vacuum additive manufacturing are more expective in the preparation of NiTi shape memory alloys. In the present work, the strategy of interlaminar residence was adopted to deposit the dense wall-structure NiTi shape memory alloy on the commercially pure titanium substrate using the electron beam freeform fabrication (EBF3) technique. The principle of phase constitution, microstructure evolution, martensitic transformation behavior, mechanical properties, and the functional response was studied in detail. The stable regions of as-deposited NiTi alloy were composed of B2 austenite at ambient temperature, and a small amount of B19′ martensite also was observed. Meanwhile, the nano-scaled Ti4Ni2O x precipitate existed in the interdendritic and grain interior of the EBF3-fabricated NiTi alloy. The stable regions of EBF3-fabricated NiTi alloy presented a single reversible martensitic transformation (B2 ↔ B19′) during the cooling and heating process. In addition, the solidification characterization, such as microstructure evolution and crystallographic orientation in the building direction and horizon direction, brought about certain differences in the mechanical properties and functional response, such as tensile strength, elongation, superelasticity, and damping capacity. The corresponding intrinsic mechanism has been discussed. Our work also provides a promising method for the flexible manufacture of dense shape memory alloys with large scale and complex geometry, which is beneficial to expanding their application fields.

Abstract:Martensitic phase transformation can greatly affect the mechanical behaviors and the stress-strain response of shape memory alloys (SMAs). In this study, the effect of martensitic phase transformation on the deformation of a single-crystal TiNi SMA specimen with a triangle crack was investigated experimentally by means of moiré interferometry method. A typical displacement field and the corresponding strain field in areas both around and far from the tip of the crack were measured in a certain time during the loading process in which the tensile load is coupled with the stress-induced martensitic phase transformation. Some characteristics of the deformation and the martensitic phase transformation of the specimen are revealed. These results may provide a reliable support for revealing the fracture mechanism of single crystal TiNi SMAs, and may enable further development in putting forward the failure criterion of SMAs.

Abstract:In this study, a Ni 49 Ti 51 shape memory alloy was innovatively prepared using the double-wire arc additive manufacturing process with plasma arc as the heat source and pure Ni and Ti welding wires as the raw materials. The microstructure and properties were systematically studied. The results indicate that the microstructure of the prepared Ni 49 Ti 51 shape memory alloy mainly consists of NiTi (B19′), NiTi (B2), and NiTi 2 phases. The ultimate compressive strength and fracture strain are 2241.3 MPa and 31.7 %, respectively. These values have increased by 39.7 % and 252.2 %, respectively, compared to the plasma arc powder melting process. Moreover, the shape memory effect is superior, exhibiting a shape memory recovery rate of up to 88 %.

Abstract:In this study, NiTi shape memory alloys were in-situ synthesized by dual-wire-feed electron beam additive manufacturing (dual-wire EBAM), which uses electron beam as energy source working in the vacuum environment, and uses pure Ni and Ti wires as feedstock. Microstructures, chemical composition distribution and mechanical properties of the as-built NiTi alloys were studied. Results showed that the as-built NiTi part exhibited continuous coarse columnar grains all along the building direction. Uniform composition distribution was obtained away from the substrate in the upper and middle regions of the part, which consisted of dominant NiTi phase and exhibited typical one-stage martensitic phase transformation. Good static compressive property with an ultimate compressive strength of 2.9 GPa and a fracture strain of 34.2% were obtained. The as-built NiTi samples also demonstrated good shape memory response, which had recovery rates of 88%, 83%, 81%, 80% and 63% for pre-compressive deformation strains of 2%, 3%, 4%, 5% and 6%, respectively. This study showed that the dual-wire EBAM has great potential to in-situ synthesize NiTi alloys with typical thermomechanical response and to flexibly control the chemical composition and corresponding functional performance of target NiTi alloy components by regulating the feeding speeds of Ni wire and Ti wire independently.

Abstract:In this study, laser-directed energy deposition was applied to build a Ti-rich ternary Ti–Ni–Cu shape-memory alloy onto a TiNi shape-memory alloy substrate to realize the joining of the multifunctional bi-metallic shape-memory alloy structure. The cost-effective Ti, Ni, and Cu elemental powder blend was used for raw materials. Various material characterization approaches were applied to reveal different material properties in two sections. The as-fabricated Ti–Ni–Cu alloy microstructure has the TiNi phase as the matrix with Ti2Ni secondary precipitates. The hardness shows no high values indicating that the major phase is not hard intermetallics. A bonding strength of 569.1 MPa was obtained by tensile testing, and digital image correlation reveals the different tensile responses of the two sections. Differential scanning calorimetry was used to measure the phase-transformation temperatures. The austenite finishing temperature of higher than 80 °C was measured for the Ti–Ni–Cu alloy section. For the TiNi substrate, the austenite finishing temperature was tested to be near 47 °C at the bottom and around 22 °C at the upper substrate region, which is due to the repeated laser scanning that acts as annealing on the substrate. Finally, the multiple shape-memory effect of two shape-memory alloy sides was tested and identified.

Abstract:TiNi‐based shape memory alloys (SMAs) attract a lot of attention from engineering and biomedical fields because of their superior functional properties, such as their unique shape memory effect, superelasticity, and excellent biocompatibility. Most of the unique properties result from martensitic transformation, which can be thermally induced or stress induced. In recent years, with the development of understanding of martensitic transformation, significant progress has been made and several novel TiNi‐based SMAs have been developed, including alloys with slim hysteresis and stable functional properties and high‐temperature SMAs with extremely large recovery strain and stress. In this work, the most recent developments in TiNi‐based SMAs are presented in terms of a strategy to develop high‐performance alloys with particular microstructures, alloying effects, and functional properties.
Comparative study on mechanical and shape memory properties of hot forged NiTiNb in axial and radial direction

Abstract:The NiTiNb shape memory alloys (SMAs) used in practice usually exist in a polycrystalline form with a strong texture. However, the performance differences in forged or rolled rods in the axial and radial directions caused by microstructures such as texture are often ignored. This study compared the mechanical and shape memory properties of the hot-forged NiTiNb alloy in the axial and radial directions. This investigation shows an increase in elongation of tensile specimens in the axial direction when compared with that in the radial direction (the maximum difference is 22.6%). However, the shape memory properties of hot-forged NiTiNb rods in the radial direction are more excellent than those in the axial direction. The types of stress-induced martensite variants are different in the axial and radial directions, but the recoverable transformation strains are the same. The primary reason is that the contribution of {2 0 1 ‾ } compound twins to transformation strain in the radial direction is equivalent to the plastic deformation of the β-Nb phase caused by the increase in flow stress. The maximum recovery stress of the radial sample with pre-strain 10% is 20.7% higher than that of the axial sample.

Abstract:Improving shape memory alloys in term of microstructural analysis is important for some related applications. In this study, three different NiTiHf shape memory alloys were produced from high pure elements and by utilizing arc-melting device. The morphologies of different precipitations and microstructures were analyzed by optical microscope, mapping, and EDX compositional analysis. The DSC measurements showed that the phase transformation temperatures is increased by adding more hafnium instead of nickel content in NiTiHf alloy, however, the enthalpy change for both endo/exothermic process were decreased. Also, XRD analysis has been carried out for all alloys to find different phases, and to obtain grain size as a function of different composition of Ni and Hf elements. The oxidation shows that titanium dioxide (TiO2) is spread out over the surface, but the microstructures are completely different for each case, e.g. needle-like shapes (nanorods) has extended over the surface of Alloy A with 3 at% Hf, but plate-like Ti-rich microstructures is dominated on the surface of Alloy B that has twice as more Hf as Alloy A; on the other hand, Alloy C with 9 at% Hf has some precipitates with TiO phase.Graphic

Abstract:Abstract Two unique behaviors of superelasticity and shape memory effect have made shape memory alloy such as NiTi, an interesting alloy for different applications. Recently, additive manufacturing (AM) as a powerful tool for fabricating NiTi has become of interest to make complex geometries. Selective laser melting (SLM) is an AM method that not only provides flexibility to make complex 3D shapes but also it can be possible to tailor the thermomechanical properties of the parts just by changing the process parameters. The non-homogenous microstructure of as-fabricated parts as well as asymmetric mechanical behavior of NiTi, make it important to study the properties of SLM NiTi parts under different loading condition. In this study, Ni50.8Ti (at. %) powder was utilized to fabricate cube, dog-bone, and tube by SLM technique. The transformation temperatures (TTs) of samples were measured by the differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) method and the variation of TTs was discussed. Three coupons were tested mechanically under compression, tension, and torsion. In-situ digital image correlation (DIC) was employed to measure and monitor the strain field of samples during the mechanical tests. The strain distribution showed localized strain for all three samples. The equivalent stress/strain was calculated to compare the result of compressive, tensile, and torsional responses and the significant asymmetric behavior was shown and discussed.
