Abstract:In the process of coal mining, the original state of rock strata is seriously damaged and a large number of fractures are produced. If the fracture is connected to the overlying natural water body, leakage of surface water and ground water will cause serious mine water damage and lack of regional water resources. If the fracture is connected with gob water containing harmful gases and substances, in addition to the occurrence of mine water damage, it will pollute the water body. In the process of mining extra-thick coal seams, water inrush accidents caused by the development of large-space overburden fracture are more frequent, which causes more serious loss and pollution of water, and even desertification of land. In this paper, digital panoramic imaging technology is used to monitor the movement of overburden rock during the mining process. A reasonable time for fracture grouting sealing was proposed based on the similar simulation experiment and the evolution characteristics of fracture fractal dimension and a reasonable ground grouting sealing scheme was designed. The field monitoring results show the grouting effectively seals the fractures and reduce air leakage and solve the risk of gob water leakage above the working face. The research in this paper reveals the evolution characteristics of large-space overburden fractures in extra-thick coal seam mining with hard roofs. It shows that ground grouting sealing is an effective means to reduce the secondary disasters of fracture development, which has practical value and practical significance for environmental protection and coal safety development.

Abstract:The study of water-conducting fracture zone development height is key to the scientific prevention and control of water damage in mines. Based on the geological conditions of the Wenjiapo coal mine in Binchang, China, this paper investigates the development of water-conducting fracture zone in overlying bedrock during mining under large buried depth and huge thick aquifer by combining on-site well-location microseismic monitoring and laboratory similar material simulation. To overcome the limitation of the " limited outlook " of water-conducting fracture zone investigation, the spatial development characteristics of roof fissures in coal seam mining were determined by on-site " the underground - ground" combined microseismic monitoring and follow-up monitoring, and the development of overlying rock fracture under the large depth of burial was concluded. The fractures were mainly distributed in the upper part of the protective coal pillar on both sides of the working face, but less in the upper part of the working face, and primarily distributed in the protective coal pillar on the side of the working face and the adjacent mining area. To verify the accuracy of the conclusion, the overlying bedrock movement and deformation characteristics and the development process of the hydraulic fracture zone during coal seam mining were analyzed by simulating similar materials in the laboratory, using the monitored area as a prototype. The results show that the development height of the mining fracture zone obtained from microseismic monitoring is basically consistent with the simulation results of similar materials. The research finding have significant implications for the study of fracture distribution characteristics and the evolution law of mining overburden, and provide a foundation for scientific prevention and control of water damage on the roof.

Abstract:North China coalfield is one of the most severe coal fields threatened by Ordovician limestone water (buried depth exceeding 1000 m). In this paper, the hydraulic mechanism of Ordovician limestone water in the complex geological structure are studied. An interesting phenomenon was found in the study, the water inrush from Ordovician limestone has a "latent period" and presents lag water inrush law. The hydrochemical characteristics of the early stage in Xingdong coal mine is non-Ordovician limestone water chemical characteristics, the later stage gradually shows the Ordovician limestone water with the continuous outflow. Meanwhile, the hyperbolic contour distribution characteristics are also observed in the spatial distribution law of microseismic in the floor working face. The minimum damage area is in the layer at the hyperbolic apex, which is the critical breakthrough point of water inrush. Furthermore, the water inrush fracture mechanics model (WIFM) of concealed fault with high confined water is established based on the fracture mechanics theory. The results show that the critical values of the length and angle of the water inrush of the conceal fault are about 50 m and 40°. It should be pointed out that the longer and larger angle conceal faults indicate the longer of the fracture expansion at the tip of the fault, and the probability of water inrush increases. Special attention should be paid to such concealed faults and methods such as grouting should be adopted to avoid the water inrush disaster caused by the activation of faults. This model provides a theoretical basis for the mechanical mechanism of the coal seam floor water inrush process.

Abstract:Water inrush in underground mines is a major safety threat for mining personnel, and it can also cause major damage to mining equipment and result in severe production losses. Water inrush can be attributed to the coalescence of rock fractures and the formation of water channel in rock mass due to the interaction of fractures, hydraulic flow, and stress field. Hence, predicting the fracturing process is the key for investigating the water inrush mechanisms for safe mining. A new coupling method is designed in FRACOD to investigate the mechanisms of water inrush disaster (known as “Luotuoshan accident”) which occurred in China in 2010 in which 32 people died. In order to investigate the evolution processes and mechanisms of water inrush accident in Luotuoshan coal mine, this study applies the recently developed fracture-hydraulic (F-H) flow coupling function to FRACOD and focuses on the rock fracturing processes in a karst collapse column which is a geologically altered zone linking several rock strata vertically formed by the long-term dissolution of the flowing groundwater. The numerical simulation of water inrush is conducted based on the actual geological conditions of Luotuoshan mining area, and various materials with actual geological characteristics were used to simulate the rocks surrounding the coal seam. The influences of several key factors, such as in situ stresses, fractures on the formation, and development of water inrush channels, are investigated. The results indicate that the water inrush source is the Ordovician limestone aquifer, which is connected by the karst collapse column to No. 16 coal seam; the fracturing zone that led to a water inrush occurs in front of the roadway excavation face where new fractures coalesced with the main fractured zone in the karst collapse column.

Abstract:The high-pressure and water-rich confined aquifer occurring in the Ordovician limestone sequence poses great threats to the routine production of underground longwall mining. Considering the intense cooperation of mining disturbance and water pressure, water-conducting fractures within a coal seam floor can connect the lower aquifer and upper goaf, and this hydraulic behavior is considered the root of water inrush hazard and water loss or contamination. In this paper, the panel 4301 of the Longquan coal mine serves as the case where the panel works closely above the floor with high water pressure. By the combination of physical and numerical modelling approaches, the variation characteristics of fracture development and volumetric strain of floor rocks subjected to mining disturbance are analyzed. A numerical computation model is constructed based on the volumetric strain-permeability equation obtained by curve fitting, and on such basis, the impacts of different mining parameters on floor rock permeability are studied. The results show that the floor rocks experience fracture generation, extension, and convergence procedures as the workface advances along the longitudinal direction, and fractures appearing in front of the workface are more developed. In the whole process of coal seam extraction, the volumetric strain profile exhibits “Λ” shape and an inverted saddle shape before and after overburden strata collapse. By controlling a single variable, the paper reveals that panel height is of greater impact on floor permeability changes than panel length and panel width.

Abstract:As a typical sedimentary rock, coal seams are usually rich in bedding planes, which significantly affect the propagation process of hydraulic fracture (HF) network and reservoir permeability. In this study, the profile characteristics and the bedding roughness of the coal seam at depth of 2800 m from Daniudi Gas Field in China is investigated. The failure mechanism of shear-expansion effect under low pressure and dynamic shear under high pressure of coal beddings induced by the dissolution-corrosion effect of fracturing liquid is analyzed. The development process of HF network under different bedding angles, joint roughness coefficients (JRCs), stress differences, and confining pressures is numerically simulated by cohesive element method. Results show that the JRC of coal beddings has significant effects on the morphology of HF networks. When the JRC exceeds 15, a HF network structure with tensile main fractures and shear secondary cracks is developed. The shear fractures account for a considerable proportion (33–66%) multi-layer layered coal seams and should be taken seriously during reservoir reconstruction. As confining pressure increases, the total length of tensile HFs sharply decreases, while the change in the total length of shear HFs is not significant. When the confining pressure increases from 5 to 15 MPa, the length ratio of shear HFs to tensile hydraulic fractures increases from 0.36 to about 1, confirming that increasing confining pressure can promote the transformation of HF failure types from tension to shear. The ratio of secondary crack to main crack length is between 6.31 and 9.78, indicating the secondary fractures occupy an absolute proportion in the hydraulic fracture network. This study is of significance for understanding the hydraulic fracture network development in coal reservoirs.

Abstract:Due to coal mining taking place on a large scale in northern China, it is inevitable that wide-spread dewatering occurs in the aquifers overlying the resulting goaf. The purpose of this paper is to protect the groundwater of overlying unconsolidated aquifers. Based on physical model experiment, seepage experiments, and numerical simulation, this paper determines the patterns and distribution of the overburden rocks in the goaf, establishes the correlation between the fracture ratio and the hydraulic conductivity of the rock mass, and characterizes the groundwater flow pattern. The results show that (1) the residual fracture occurring ratio within the residual fracture zone is approximately 1.82 times that of the fracture compaction zone and 1.93 times that of the coal wall support zone; (2) the hydraulic conductivity of the rock mass in different parts of the goaf increases with increasing fracture ratio, the relationship of the two follows a power curve; (3) the predicted groundwater levels from numerical simulation is good fit with the measured and indicates that the hydraulic conductivities derived from seepage experiments are rational. We demonstrate how a laboratory-scale physical model can be used effectively to verify existing conceptual models in such a way that the impact of coal mining on groundwater resources can be predicted for similar regions.
Research on the Distribution of Overlying Rock Fractures Caused by Mining in Ultra-Thick Coal Seams and Its Impact on the Near-Surface Aquifer

Abstract:Near-surface water is the foundation for maintaining the ecological environment, and coal remains an important energy source in today's world as we face a shortage of green energy. Achieving near-surface-water protection while safely mining coal is an important way to ensure social and ecological health and sustainability. The key lies in whether the fracture height of the mining overlying strata affects the aquifer. This article compiles the coupling finite element and discrete element method (CFE-DEM) and established mechanical constitutive models such as the interaction between rock blocks on both sides of the penetrated fracture, rock mass fracture process, and the plastic deformation law of rocks based on the results of mining-induced overlying rock failure. On this basis, a numerical calculation model is established based on the engineering geological conditions of the Beixinyao Coal Mine. The numerical simulation results indicate that the theory and the CFE-DEM method can numerically simulate the distribution and evolution of mining-induced overlying rock fractures. The water-conducting fractures in the overlying strata of extra-thick coal seams extend to the front of the working face in a trapezoidal shape, and the angle formed between them and the advancing direction ranges from 62° to 75°. Combined with the in situ measurement results, the height of the water-conducting fracture zone of the extra-thick coal seam is between 209 m and 230 m; the fractures were not found to have affected the aquifer at a vertical distance of 252 m from the coal seam. This means that the impact of ultra-thick coal seam mining on the aquifer is very limited. The research is of great significance for ensuring coal mining and surface ecological sustainability in ultra-thick coal seam areas.

Abstract:Karst water in coal floors is the most common hazard in the coal fields of North China. Water inrush disasters always occur due to reductions in the efficacy of a coal floor's water resistance ability, and have brought huge casualties and losses. The floor damage zone during mining disturbance is crucial to the formation of the water inrush pathway and is considered to be closely related with floor rock brittleness. To investigate the effects of coal floor brittleness on the hazard of water inrushes from underlying aquifers, four groups of numerical simulations are conducted in this study based on a finite-element method. These numerical simulations especially concern the contrastive analysis of brittle rock's properties regarding the failure characteristics of rock samples, fracture development in layered rocks, the damage zone of the floor during mining disturbance, and the hazard of water inrush from the floor during mining. The results show that brittle rock is easier to destroy in comparison with ductile rock. Brittle layers are more likely to develop denser natural fractures than ductile layers. The more brittle the floor rock is, the larger the depth of floor damage will be. The brittle floor is verified to induce water inrush from an underlying aquifer more easily than the ductile floor. This study revealed the relationship between the brittle property of coal floors and the depth of mining-induced floor damage zones, providing a reference for hazard evaluation of water inrush from coal floors and control measures.

Abstract:Based on the 7618 working face in Yaoqiao coal mine of Datun mining area, the activation mechanism of water-rich faults and the development characteristics of water-conducting fractures in overlying strata under the influence of faults are studied by theoretical analysis, numerical simulation and field measurement in this paper. The research results show that Anderson model and Mohr–Coulomb strength criterion are combined to establish the fault failure mechanical model, and the fault activation criterion under the influence of mining is obtained. FLAC3D numerical simulation results show that with the advance of the working face, the fault begins to be affected by the mining effect of the working face at the distance of 20 ~ 30 m from the fault. Meanwhile, with the advance of the working face, the overburden shear failure range also expands, and the fault fracture gradually expands from top to bottom. The failure zone of the working face roof is connected with the fault fracture zone. Then the fault is "activated" and causes the fault to become a water gushing channel, and finally the water gushing disaster occurs. Through numerical simulation and comparative analysis, the development height of water-conducting fracture is 73.2 m in the absence of fault, and 73.7 m in the presence of fault, indicating that the fault has little influence on the maximum development height of water-conducting fracture. The actual development height of the water-conducting fracture zone in the 7618 working face is 73.97 m and the fracture production ratio is 13.7. The research results can provide theoretical reference for the safe mining of similar working faces across faults.

Abstract:The northern Guizhou coalfield exhibits complex geological conditions and well-developed structures. Hard rock formations are damaged by faults, causing frequent water inrush accidents. To study the damaging effect of faults on roof key strata and the mechanism of water inrush accidents, this paper chose the 5914 coal mining faces of the Longfeng coal mine as the engineering background, determined the water inrush source and key strata through field investigation, hydrochemical analysis, and theoretical calculation, and used RFPA-flow numerical simulation software to simulate the hydraulic coupling effect. The characteristics of the shear stress, damage degree, and hydraulic gradient were analyzed, and finally, the high-density electrical method was employed for simulation verification. The results indicated that the key stratum can control water inrush, but under the influence of faults, the roof forms multiple separation layers, and several sudden increases in displacement occur (the sudden jump phenomenon). A stress concentration area is formed in the head-end tunnel through the fault, and the number of AE events increased to 1150. The water-force gradient exhibits a uniform local large-scale evolution process, and finally, the height of the water-conducting fracture reaches 60 m through the aquifer. This height is 3 times that without fault influence. The numerical simulation results are consistent with the theoretical calculation and field analysis results, which verifies that the fault imposes a highly significant weakening effect on the key stratum, providing data support for later engineering.

Abstract:Hydraulic fracturing is extensively utilized for the prevention and control of gas outbursts and rockbursts in the deep sections of coal mines. The determination of fracturing construction parameters based on the coal seam conditions and stress environments merits further investigation. This paper constructs a damage analysis model for coal under hydraulic loads, factoring in the influence of the intermediate principal stress, grounded in the unified strength theory analysis approach. It deduces the theoretical analytical equation for the damage distribution of a coal medium subjected to small-flow-rate hydraulic fracturing in underground coal mines. Laboratory experiments yielded the mechanical parameters of coal in the study area and facilitated the fitting of the intermediate principal stress coefficient. Leveraging these datasets, the study probes into the interaction between hydraulic loads and damage radius under assorted influence ranges, porosity, far-field crustal stresses, and brittle damage coefficients. The findings underscore that hydraulic load escalates exponentially with the damage radius. Within the variable range of geological conditions in the test area, the effects of varying influence range, porosity level, far-field stress, and brittle damage coefficient on the outcomes intensify one by one; a larger hydraulic load diminishes the impact of far-field stress variations on the damage radius, inversely to the influence range, porosity, and brittle damage. The damage radius derived through the gas pressure reduction method in field applications corroborates the theoretical calculations, affirming the precision of the theoretical model. These findings render pivotal guidance for the design and efficacy assessment of small-scale hydraulic fracturing in underground coal mines.

Abstract:Hidden faults in deep coal seam floor threaten the exploitation of coal resources. Under the influence of mining and water confined in the floor, the cemented filler in the hidden fault will be eroded by water flow, in order to investigate the fracture characteristics and water inrush risk of hidden faults in floors above confined aquifer. Using the 27305 working face as geological background, the influence of the seepage scouring filler on the mechanism of water inrush from hidden faults was assessed by developing a stress-seepage coupling model and employing the finite difference method to simulate the seepage process of hidden faults under the combined action of high ground stress and high confined water. The evolution of seepage, shear stress, and plastic zone was also assessed. The influence of the hydraulic pressure of the aquifer and the thickness of a waterproof rock floor on the formation of the water inrush pathway was analyzed. Results indicate that (1) under the influence of mining, the hidden fault experienced the change process of stress stability, stress concentration, and stress release. The shear stress increases first and then decreases. The compressive stress decreases gradually due to stress release. (2) Water inrush disaster will not occur immediately when the working face is above the hidden fault. The delayed water inrush occurs in the mined-out area when the working face advances to 160 m, the floor failure zone is connected with the hidden fault failure zone, and the delayed water inrush channel is formed. (3) With the mining advances, the water pressure of aquifer is the same. The larger-angle fault leads to the thinner thickness of floor aquifer. The greater the influence of hidden fault on coal seam mining, the higher the danger of water inrush.

Abstract:Studying the evolution law of overlying rock fissures and predicting the development height of water-conducting fissure zones is the key to preventing roof water damage, protecting mine water resources, and realizing the safe and sustainable development of the mine. To study the overburden fracture evolution law of coal mining under aquifer conditions, the 1402 working face of Longwangzhuang Mine in Shaanmian Coalfield serves as the engineering background based on the Fractal Theory and similar simulation technology; this paper analyzes the fracture evolution of overburden rock and the development law of Water-Conducting Fracture Zone (WCFZ) during the advancing of working face, and further puts forward a model for the location discrimination of overburden fracture based on plate theory. The results indicate that post-mining, overburden rock failure assumes a trapezoidal shape, and fractures around the cutting hole and the side of the working face fully develop, while those in the middle of the goaf tend to compact. The distribution of the fracture network of mining strata at different advancing distances has good self-similarity, and the fractal dimension of the fracture network of overlying rock can be divided into three stages: ascending dimension, decreasing dimension, and stable phase. The II 1 coal seam fracture does not spread to the Sandstone Fissure Confined Aquifer. These findings provide strategic guidance for protecting mine aquifer water resources, preventing and controlling roof water inrush, and ensuring safe and sustainable production within the study area.

Abstract:The Jurassic coalfield in northern Shaanxi, China is one of the seven largest coalfields in the world. It is located in an arid region of northwestern China, with poor water resources and fragile ecological environment. Due to coal mining, the rock layers on the coal seam will be slumped and fractured to produce fissures. The penetrated fissures will cause a mine water burst disaster and cause damage to groundwater and surface water. The strip filling method can control the expansion of the diversion fissure zone and protect the groundwater and surface water from the underground mining of coal. In this paper, the effects of different strip filling conditions on the diversion fissure zone are studied by discrete element numerical experiments. The study indicates that the upward-fissure and the downward-fissure penetrations are the direct causes of the instability of the water-blocking rock group. After the upward fissure extends to a certain extent, there will be a downward fissure. Under the condition of controlling the width of the filling strip and the compressive strength, the strip filling method can effectively prevent the upward and downward fissures of the water-blocking rock group from penetrating and can ensure that the surface water system is not affected by the underground coal mining activities.
Finite–Discrete Element Method Simulation Study on Development of Water-Conducting Fractures in Fault-Bearing Roof under Repeated Mining of Extra-Thick Coal Seams

Abstract:The formation of water-conducting fractures in overlying strata caused by underground coal mining not only leads to roof water inrush disasters, but also water-conducting fractures penetrate the aquifer, resulting in the occurrence of a mine-water-inrush disaster and the loss of water resources. It destroys the sustainability of surface water and underground aquifers. This phenomenon is particularly significant in extra-thick coal seams and fault-bearing areas. Numerical simulation is an effective method to predict the failure range of mining overburden rock with low cost and high efficiency. The key to its accuracy lies in a reasonable constitutive model and simulation program. In this study, considering that the three parts of penetrating cracks, non-penetrating cracks, and intact rock blocks are often formed after rock failure, the contact state criterion and shear friction relationship of discrete rock blocks and the mixed fracture displacement–damage–load relationship are established, respectively. Combined with the Mohr–Coulomb criterion, the constitutive model of mining rock mass deformation–discrete block motion and interaction is formed. On this basis, according to the engineering geological conditions of Yushupo Coal Mine, a numerical model for the development of water-conducting cracks in the roof with faults under repeated mining of extra-thick coal seams is established. The results show the following: The constitutive relation of the continuous deformation–discrete block interaction of overlying strata and the corresponding finite element–discrete element FDEM numerical program and VUSDFLD multi-coal seam continuous mining subroutine can numerically realize the formation process of faults and water flowing fractures in overlying strata under continuous mining of extra-thick multi-coal seams. The toughness of sand mudstone is low, and the fracture will be further developed under the repeated disturbance of multi-thick coal seam mining. Finally, it is stabilized at 216–226 m, and the ratio of fracture height to mining thickness is 14.1. When the working face advances to the fault, the stress concentration occurs in the fault and its overlying rock, which leads to the local fracture of the roof rock mass and the formation of cracks. The fault group makes this phenomenon more obvious. The results have been preliminarily applied and tested in Ningwu mining area, which provides theoretical support for further development of roof water disaster control under the condition of an extra-thick coal seam and avoids the loss of water resources in surface water and underground aquifers.

Abstract:Underground water reservoir technology facilitates the harmonization of coal resource development and water resource conservation. The main structure of the underground water reservoir dam comprises coal pillars, whose stability is influenced by the combined effects of water pressure, stress, and fractures. In this study, triaxial compression tests were conducted on single fractured coal samples with different angles under varying water pressure conditions to develop the new insights into the mechanical and damage properties of fractured coal samples, combined with acoustic emission (AE) technique. The results showed that the fracture angle and water pressure had a varying influence on the mechanical behavior of fractured coal. As the fracture angle increased from 15 degrees to 75 degrees, the peak strength of fractured coal initially decreased and then increased. While the peak strength decreased with increasing water pressure. The failure pattern of fractured coal samples subjected to water pressure and triaxial loading was shear failure. The AE evolution, energy evolution and stress level were all correlated, the accelerated growth of accumulated AE energy and the surpassing of dissipative energy over elastic strain energy can be regarded as precursors to the instability of fractured coal. These results indicate the failure mechanism involving the destabilized deformation of fractured coal samples subjected to water pressure and triaxial loading, which gives a useful reference for the design and stability monitoring of underground water reservoir dams.

Abstract:More than 50% of China's CBM is contained in the fractured soft and low-permeability coal. This medium has characteristics of low strength, ductile failure, multiple fractures and low permeability, which could lead to HFs were short if direct fracturing technology was adopted. Indirect fracturing is one of the new technologies to realize the high CBM production. The core scientific problem is to study the constitutive relationship of plastic damage and fracture-seepage coupling of the coal, then HFs area under the influence of multiple factors was analyzed. In this paper, the coal discontinuities are the main channel for the HFs propagation by hydraulic fracturing and acoustic emission experiments. 3D network model of coal discontinuities was established based on CT data. The fluid-solid coupling constitutive equations were established to reflect characteristics of mixed mode ductile fracture of discontinuities and plastic damage-seepage of coal matrix. On these bases, parameters of indirect fracturing were optimized through numerical simulation in order to maximize the HFs area in the coal. The results show that, compared with the brittle continuum, the ductile failure and the mixed mode fracture process consume lots of the hydraulic energy, which is the root cause of the small HFs area. In addition, the area decreases in the form of power or exponential function with the increase of coal permeability and the distance between well and interface, but increases in the form of power function with the increase of injection rate, elastic modulus ratio of roof to coal, interface strength, and difference between maximum and minimum stress. By controlling the above factors in the sensitivity critical intervals, the target of large HFs area in the coal can be realized. The above conclusions have been applied to the fractured soft and low-permeability coal region, which makes the CBM production increase by 20 times.
