Abstract:Water inrush due to fault activation in deep coal mining is the main type of water disaster in central and eastern China. This paper analyzed the primary form and mechanism of fault activation that triggers water inrush and derived the critical conditions for fault activation. The WuGou coal mine is used as a geological example, and the characteristics of the fault activation and mechanism of the confined water rising were researched by similar simulation experiments. The results provide the following conclusions. (1) There are three forms of fault activation that trigger water inrush: continuous fault, hidden fault and associated fault activation. (2) Mining causes high abutment pressure in a coal seam; this pressure transfers to the floor, causing damage and failure. The maximum failure depth occurs when the overlying strata is in a critical fractured state. The cracks of the floor gradually close in the goaf. (3) The fault activation causes water inrush and exhibits four stages: fault zone yielding caused by high stress, cracking and extending of the fault zone, movement and slippage of the fault zone, and confined water rising. (4) The influence factors of the confined water rising were analyzed. The experimental results show a negative correlation between the confined water height and distance to the fault zone and a positive correlation among the confined water pressure, fault zone width and confined water height. In addition, a strong–weak–strong change law of the confined water pressure with height is observed.

Abstract:We analyzed the regional nature of China's coal mine water disasters based on three aspects: the main water source, water-conducting passages, and threat level of water hazards. The development of water hazard control technology in China's coal mines, including exploration and assessment of hydrogeological conditions, water inrush mechanisms, and predictive technology were all reviewed. We then focused our discussion on the calculation theory and methods behind mine inflow prediction, methods of dewatering and depressurizing, and technology for mining under water pressure and water-blocking grouting. Finally, we present the evolving trend of coal mine water disaster prevention and control technology, which is characterized by accuracy, transparency, environmental considerations, informatization, and intelligent technology.

Abstract:In China, water disaster often occurred in coal mines in recent years. According to official statistics on coal mine water accidents occurred in recent twelve years in China, major characteristics of the water disaster have been illustrated. The result shows that the number of both water accidents and corresponding fatalities decreased from 2001 to 2012. And apparently, the accidents occurred in township-owned coal mines and triggered by gob area water accounted for a higher proportion, respectively.

Abstract:North China coalfield is one of the most severe coal fields threatened by Ordovician limestone water (buried depth exceeding 1000 m). In this paper, the hydraulic mechanism of Ordovician limestone water in the complex geological structure are studied. An interesting phenomenon was found in the study, the water inrush from Ordovician limestone has a "latent period" and presents lag water inrush law. The hydrochemical characteristics of the early stage in Xingdong coal mine is non-Ordovician limestone water chemical characteristics, the later stage gradually shows the Ordovician limestone water with the continuous outflow. Meanwhile, the hyperbolic contour distribution characteristics are also observed in the spatial distribution law of microseismic in the floor working face. The minimum damage area is in the layer at the hyperbolic apex, which is the critical breakthrough point of water inrush. Furthermore, the water inrush fracture mechanics model (WIFM) of concealed fault with high confined water is established based on the fracture mechanics theory. The results show that the critical values of the length and angle of the water inrush of the conceal fault are about 50 m and 40°. It should be pointed out that the longer and larger angle conceal faults indicate the longer of the fracture expansion at the tip of the fault, and the probability of water inrush increases. Special attention should be paid to such concealed faults and methods such as grouting should be adopted to avoid the water inrush disaster caused by the activation of faults. This model provides a theoretical basis for the mechanical mechanism of the coal seam floor water inrush process.

Abstract:To better understand the mechanism of water inrush from fault zones, we investigated a typical inrush case from a coal mine in northern China, identified the water source and the role of fault zones, and analyzed the mechanical characteristics of the rock mass. We established a numerical model of fluid–solid coupling using finite difference methods based ideal elastic–plastic and Biot's consolidation theories. The model considers softening effects caused by mine dewatering as well as the dynamic influence of mean principal stress and pore water pressure on fault zone permeability. It also simulates fault zone deformation, failure, and seepage under natural and disturbed-state conditions. The mechanism of water inrush through fault zones in a disturbed area was identified by comparing the deformation, failure, and seepage characteristics of fault zones with and without disturbance. The results show that deformation was concentrated at the bottom of the fault zone because of its naturally low strength, which created favorable conditions for water inrush. Softening of the media by mine dewatering also facilitated water inrush. Feedback effects between the fault zone and groundwater-enhanced permeability then led to groundwater bursting into the mine through the fault zone. This study provides an important framework for groundwater hazard prevention in similar mining areas.

Abstract:A serious groundwater inrush occurred at the Wangjialing coal mine on March 28, 2010. Great effort from all over the country was taken during the postaccident rescue. However, triggered by accumulated water in the upper abandoned tunnels and goafs of a nearby closed individually owned coal mine, it caused great damage, including 38 deaths and direct economic losses of over 49 million yuan. The inrush water was from the abandoned tunnels and goafs, which were filled subsequently by groundwater from the sandstone aquifer in the roof of the coal seam. The passage formed in the west roof of the heading face of the air return tunnel in the 20101 first mining face. Unidentified distribution and water-filled degree of the abandoned tunnels and goafs are critical bases for the accident. That important regulations for abundant groundwater exploration and release were not carried out thoroughly was another fatal cause leading to the accident. The poor awareness of water hazard controlling also contributed to the accident to a large extent.

Abstract:Water inrush disasters in mining frequently occur under the influence of confined water-bearing fault zones. Therefore, investigating the fault water inrush mechanism is necessary to reduce the number of occurrences of this type of disaster. In fault zones, the rock is highly fractured, and the mechanism of water conduction is complex. In this research, the seepage mechanism of fractured sandstone in fault zones is studied through experiments, and the results indicate that the permeability coefficient of fractured sandstone depends on the axial stress and particle size. The relationship between the permeability coefficient and axial stress was an exponential relationship. Then, a water-rock coupled model is proposed based on the experimental results, which considers the different water flow patterns during water inrush disasters. Finally, a numerical simulation combined with the water-rock coupled model is conducted to investigate the fault water inrush mechanism of a case study, and the results reveal that when water inrush disasters occur during mining, two types of conditions are required. One is that the connection among the fractured zone of the coal seam roof, fault fracture zone, and aquifer fails, and the other is that the connection among the fractured zone of the water inrush prevention pillar, fault fracture zone, and aquifer fails. This study contributes to an increased understanding of the mechanism of water inrush disasters and the design of water inrush prevention pillars.

Abstract:Water inrush disasters caused by confined aquifers under high pressure below the mine floor are a major problem in China, restricting the safe and efficient mining of deep coal seams. We have classified the stress disturbance modes acting on the floor area in such mines into two types based on the water yield changes of a thick aquifuge floor in a deep longwall mine and the underground pressure behavior of deep longwall faces during water inrush events, and they are the dynamic load of the main roof instability from the far field of the longwall face and the static load of the abutment pressure from the near field, respectively. The water inrush modes include mining-induced cracks indirectly connected with the Ordovician limestone aquifer and through-going faults directly connected with the same aquifer. In order to control water inrush from thick aquifuge floor, grout was used to block off the cracks in the strata just above the Ordovician limestone on the site; decreasing the mining width also decreased the stress disturbance intensity caused by the dynamic and static loads; while presplitting the roof relieved the underground pressure and effectively weakened the dynamic load; and the confined water was drained to lower the water pressure and cut off the source of water flowing into the longwall face. Finally, the combined effectiveness of these control technologies was verified by micro-seismic monitoring, and further water inrush disasters were prevented through the thick aquifuge floor of a deep longwall mine in the Xing-dong coal mine in north China.

Abstract:To solve water disasters of coal seam bottom in the 8th coal mine, with the analysis on the bottom aquifer characteristics, the water inrush coefficient method was applied to evaluate the dangers of the aquifer floor and to the dangers division of water inrush. In combination with the karst fracture development conditions of the aquifer, we designed the water prevention and control plan of the limestone water under the seam floor. All the schemes set the basis for the mine safety production.

Abstract:<span>Coal is the major energy source in China. Many coal mines in Southwest China have arranged the excavation roadway system in the Maokou limestone in coal seam floor because of its special hydrogeological conditions. Since karst is widely distributed in Maokou limestone and water-filled karst caves are also developed commonly there, once a strongly water-filled karst cave is exposed during roadway excavation, the water inrush disaster occurs easily. In order to reveal the phenomenon of water inrush disasters from covered karst caves more effectively, the water inrush that occurred during the roadway excavation process of Jiyuan coal mine in northern Guizhou was taken as a research object in this study. Based on the regional geological structure, the hydrogeological condition and the fluid-structure interaction theory, a fluid-structure interaction model of water inrush in the roadway excavation was established, and variation laws of stress field, displacement field and seepage field of surrounding rock during the process of water inrush from karst cave were analyzed. Besides, the influence of different geological conditions on water inrush from karst cave was discussed from aspects of the size of karst cave, the water pressure of karst cave and the thickness of aquiclude.</span>
Prevention of Water Inrushes in Deep Coal Mining over the Ordovician Aquifer: A Case Study in the Wutongzhuang Coal Mine of China

Abstract:Through field observation and theoretical study, we found that the Hanxing mining area has a typical ternary structure in coal mining under high water pressure of the aquifer. This ternary structure is the Ordovician limestone aquifer-aquiclude including thin limestones-coal seam. Although the aquiclude is considerably thick, there is still a great risk of water burst during mining under water pressure in the deep burial environment. Multidimensional characteristics of floor water inrush in deep mining are summarized in the paper, including water migration upwardly driven by the Ordovician confined water, the planar dispersion of the water inrush channel, the stepped increase of the water inrush intensity, the hysteretic effluent of the water inrush time and the exchange, and adsorption of the water quality. The water inrush mechanism is clarified that the permeability, dilatancy, fracturing, and ascending of the water from the Ordovician limestone aquifer form a planar and divergent flow through the transfer, storage, and transportation of thin limestone aquifers. The corresponding water inrush risk evaluation equation is also proposed. Based on the thickness of the aquiclude, the thickness of the failure zones, and the water inrush coefficient, the floor aquiclude is classified into five categories. While water inrush cannot be completely controlled by the traditional underground floor reinforcement with ultra-thick aquiclude or even zonal grouting, a comprehensive prevention and control concept of the four-dimensional floor water hazard in full time-space domain are proposed. A tridimensional prevention and control model of three-dimensional reticulated exploration, treatment, verification, and supplementation is presented. A full time domain technological quality control process of condition assessment, exploration, remediation, inspection, evaluation, monitoring, and reassurance is formed, and a water disaster prevention method with full time-space tridimensional network in deep coal mining is established. Case study in the Hanxing mining area demonstrates that the proposed methods are highly effective.

Abstract:Kongzhuang coal mine of Shanghai Datun Energy Resources Co., Ltd. is a typical deep coal mine in eastern China. The mining disturbance of working face in deep coal mine leads to the fracture and movement of overlying strata and the damage of the aquifer in overlying strata, thereby causing water inrush disaster and posing a serious threat to the safety production in coal mine. Therefore, the temporal and spatial evolution mechanism of the water-conducting fractured zone of overlying strata in the Kongzhuang coal mine is researched systematically in this paper. Especially, the hydro-geological conditions and mining conditions in the Kongzhuang coal mine are analyzed; on this basis, the fracture and movement of overlying strata are simulated by physical similarity simulation test, and the temporal and spatial evolution rule of overlying strata in the Kongzhuang coal mine is obtained. Besides, the development height of "two zones" is measured by double-end water shutoff detection method, and the risk assessment for the water inrush disaster of the coal seam roof is carried out in the Kongzhuang coal mine. The research achievements in this paper indicate that the water-conducting channel formed in the mining process of #7 coal seam is the most important water-filling channel. Quaternary aquifer water recharges the mine indirectly through the bedrock aquifer, and the sandy mudstone with large thickness is the key layer to control the development of a water-conducting fracture zone. Meanwhile, the height of the caving zone is 26.7 m, about 8.3 times of mining height, and the height of the fracture zone is 68.3 m, approximately equal to 16.26 of the mining height. The results of #1 and #2 borehole leakages in the double-end water shutoff detection method show that the height of the water-conducting fractured zone is 63.70 m-65.27 m, and the split-to-mining ratio is 15.17-15.54. The water inrush risk of the coal seam roof shows that most of the 7436 working face is in the transition zone, and a small area around the cutting hole of the working face is in the relatively dangerous zone. Therefore, the innovation of this paper is that the temporal and spatial evolution mechanism of the water-conducting fractured zone of overlying strata in the Kongzhuang coal mine is revealed, which provides the theoretical guidance for the prediction and prevention of water inrush disaster in the coal mine with the similar mining conditions.

Abstract:Mining activities carried out above an aquifer, especially in the hanging wall of normal faults, generally involve the risk of water inrush. For a better understanding of the mechanism inducing groundwater outburst through fault floor, the analytical and numerical simulation methods were applied to investigate the process of fault activation driven by mining and hydraulic loads. The influences of the advancing distance and fault dip were conducted. The results exhibit good agreement between the theoretical calculation and the numerical simulation. The fault activation by induced tangential stress change has a positive correlation with the advancing distance and a negative correlation with the fault dip angle. The stress concentration factor increases significantly when the excavation process enters the horizontal range of fault projection, following the stress peak and failure zone approaching the coal seam from deep to shallow along the fault. For the cases with a constant advancing distance, the smaller the fault dip is, the earlier the water-inrush channel will be formed. The research results in this study reveal the theoretical mechanism of fault activation and groundwater inrush of coal seam floor above a confined aquifer and thus provide valuable insights for the prevention and risk assessment of mine water disasters in underground engineering.

Abstract:The northern Guizhou coalfield exhibits complex geological conditions and well-developed structures. Hard rock formations are damaged by faults, causing frequent water inrush accidents. To study the damaging effect of faults on roof key strata and the mechanism of water inrush accidents, this paper chose the 5914 coal mining faces of the Longfeng coal mine as the engineering background, determined the water inrush source and key strata through field investigation, hydrochemical analysis, and theoretical calculation, and used RFPA-flow numerical simulation software to simulate the hydraulic coupling effect. The characteristics of the shear stress, damage degree, and hydraulic gradient were analyzed, and finally, the high-density electrical method was employed for simulation verification. The results indicated that the key stratum can control water inrush, but under the influence of faults, the roof forms multiple separation layers, and several sudden increases in displacement occur (the sudden jump phenomenon). A stress concentration area is formed in the head-end tunnel through the fault, and the number of AE events increased to 1150. The water-force gradient exhibits a uniform local large-scale evolution process, and finally, the height of the water-conducting fracture reaches 60 m through the aquifer. This height is 3 times that without fault influence. The numerical simulation results are consistent with the theoretical calculation and field analysis results, which verifies that the fault imposes a highly significant weakening effect on the key stratum, providing data support for later engineering.

Abstract:Mine water inrush is very common in China and can cause hysteretic and severe damages to the safety production of coal mines. Essentially, water inrush from coal floor can be attributed to the connection of cracks and the formation of water channel in floor rocks under the interaction of stress field and seepage field. In this paper, the interaction between cracks, stress field, and seepage field in floor rocks was studied by physical simulation; the evolution law of water inrush from floor cracks was obtained under the fluid-solid coupling effect, and the monitoring of rock stress and seepage pressure was realized by virtue of soil pressure and pore-pressure sensors. The results indicated that the permeability of floor rocks had regional and temporal characteristics due to the cyclical variation of in-situ floor stress. The high-permeability zone occurred under the early mining stress area, and gradually extended and connected inside the floor. As a result, more confined water could flood into the connected cracks and thus changed the seepage field in front of working face. This work provides new approaches and knowledge for researching coal floor water inrush and has important significances for the prevention of coal water disasters.

Abstract:With the continuous westward shift of China's coal production center, the western mining areas will play an increasingly important role in ensuring national energy security. It is urgent to extract coal economically and efficiently and realize scientific mining under the premise of ensuring the safe and environmental capacity. This paper systematically summarizes the research progress of coal seam separation water disaster at home and abroad, and elaborates the problem of coal seam separation water disaster from four aspects: formation mechanism of coal seam separation water, disaster-causing mechanism, prediction and early warning of water disaster and key prevention and control technologies. This paper summarizes the research on mining overlying strata separation and the formation mechanism of overlying strata separation water, and summarizes the formation of coal seam overlying strata separation water into three basic conditions: water separation, the existence of recharge water around the separation bed, and the separation space lasting long enough. However, the prevention and control of coal mine water disaster under complex geological conditions is an important problem restricting coal mine safety at present. The water damage prediction of overlying strata separation is summarized from three aspects: prediction of the location of available water separation, prediction of the periodicity of water inrush and prediction of the amount of water inrush, according to the development characteristics of bed separation. In this paper, the water damage prediction of overlying strata separation is summarized from three aspects: prediction of the location of available water separation, prediction of the periodicity of water inrush and prediction of the amount of water inrush. Abstract:The mining depth of most coal mines in North China has exceeded 1 km. The high seepage water pressure caused by high ground stress leads to the increasingly serious threat of water disaster in the mine. To explore the relationship and mechanism between water inrush from deep mining floor and grouting prevention, single-level grouting and multi-level cooperative grouting methods were carried out in Ordovician limestone confined aquifer of coal seam floor in Xingdong coal mine. Meanwhile, the temporal and spatial characteristics of rock fracture in the floor of deep mining face are revealed through the law of rock fracture microseismic. It is noteworthy that the occurrence time of water inrush and microseismic events have lag characteristics, that is, the occurrence time of microseismic events is earlier than that of water inrush. The multi-level cooperative grouting method can effectively control the non-uniform dissolution Ordovician limestone aquifer in-plane and vertical plane. Furthermore, single-level grouting and multi-level cooperative grouting methods are assumed to be unstable grouting and stable grouting. Besides, the flow pattern transformation characteristics of Ordovician limestone water in unstable to stable grouting are simulated by the finite element method. The results show that the energy inoculation level of fracture expansion around the aquifer decreases after stable grouting reinforcement. In other words, the multi-level cooperative grouting method can effectively strengthen and fill the water inrush channel and reduce the damage of high osmotic pressure to the aquiclude. It is of great significance to reduce the probability of water inrush in deep coal seam and ensure the mining safety of deep coal seam.
