Abstract:Scientific instruments and facilities used for calibrating the dynamic angle error of inertial instruments have played more and more important roles in mechanism error research and accuracy improvement. Present attitude measurement methods can not simultaneously meet the requirements of the inertial instrument angle error calibration in dynamic environments such as linear or angular vibration. Based on the collaborative integration and modeling calculation of single-point laser Doppler vibrometer, this paper proposes a dynamic attitude measurement system that can completely realize non-contact real-time accurate three-dimensional rotation angle measurement, filling in the blank of non-contact dynamic angle error calibration of inertial instrument. Besides, we propose a distance calibration method to reduce the angle measurement error from 0.34 degrees to 0.0072 degrees, which fully satisfies the non-contact measurement requirements of the inertial instrument.

Abstract:This paper presents a capacitive rotary encoder for both angular position and angular speed measurements. The encoder is mainly composed of three parts: 1) the transmitting segments; 2) a pair of reflecting electrodes; and 3) a pair of receiving electrodes. The transmitting segments together with four mutual quadrature carrier voltages provide a modulated electric field. The reflecting electrodes, which are patterned sinusoidally can encode the angular position to a phase/frequency modulated signal based on quadrature modulation. The modulated signal is then digitally decoded to the angular position in a field programmable gate array processor based on the quadrature demodulation and the coordinate rotational digital computer algorithm. Through a universal serial bus, the digital angular position is transmitted to a computer for further analysis in National Instruments’ LabVIEW software. A prototype of the capacitive encoder shows that its precision is better than 0.006° and the resolution is 0.002°. The dynamic nonlinearity is evaluated at ±0.4° when the rotor is rotating at 1000 r/min.

Abstract:A new 3-axis flight simulator based on MR-J2S ac servo system is designed for the research of the flight control system and inertial navigation system of a micro unmanned helicopter.The simulator is horizontal arrangement and driven by electric motors.Photoelectric encoders are used to be feedback elements.The system has a two-stage control structure composed of host computer and slave computer.This simulator has the characteristics of high precision,simple structure and low cost.The experimental results indicate that this simulator can meet the demands of hardware-in-the-loop simulation of the micro unmanned helicopter.
An Ultra-Precision Error Estimation for a Multi-Axes Grating Encoder Using Quadrant Photodetectors

Abstract:A mathematical model of measurement angle and diffraction spot based on the traditional four-quadrant photodetector (QPD) angle measurement system was established to solve the problem of low angle measurement accuracy of the multidegree-of- freedom grating encoder.We proposed a grating encoder angle measurement method based on the improved Infinite integral algorithm of QPD and constructed a mathematical model for angle measurement using QPD. Based on the given QPD model and the basic parameters of the laser beam, preliminary simulation and system verification are carried out. The experimental results show that the maximum angle measurement error does not exceed 5.7 parts per thousand within the measurement range of 1200 arcseconds. Compared with the traditional angle measurement method based on QPD, the measurement structure is simpler and the angle measurement accuracy of the grating encoder is greatly improved. A new method is provided for the high-precision measurement of the three-axis rotation angle of the absolute grating encoder.

Abstract:Basing on the feature that absolute encoder can count number of revolution during power failure,the application of absolute encoder in motor rotating position detection is discussed,and a realizing scheme of embedded system is introduced.Combining the characteristics of single chip processor and absolute encoder,the hardware and software designing scheme is explained in detail.Single chip processor controls its output pin to simulate the clock signal to communicate with absolute encoder.This method not only successfully solves the interface problem of absolute encoder,but also can be used in other communication systems.Practical operation result shows that the system is stable and can realize the real-time detection of rotate position accurately.

Abstract:An absolute-type four-degree-of-freedom (four-DOF) grating encoder that can simultaneously measure the three-axis pose (θx, θy, θz) and one-axis out-of-plane position (Z) of an object with high accuracy is demonstrated for the first time in this research. This grating encoder is composed of a stationary reading head and a movable grating reflector. A light beam from the reading head is projected onto the grating, and three diffracted beams (0th-, +1st-, and −1st-order) are generated, collimated, and received by three separate quadrant photodetectors (QPDs). The information of θx, θy, θz, and Z is coded into spot positions of these three diffracted beams on the QPDs. Thus, the modeling and decoupling algorithms were investigated, and an independent calculation of these four-DOF absolute positions was theoretically guaranteed. A prototype was then designed, constructed, and evaluated. Experimental results verified that the proposed grating encoder could achieve the absolute measurement of four-DOF θx, θy, θz, and Z with an accuracy of sub-arcseconds and sub-micrometers. To the best of our knowledge, the proposed encoder in this research is the first one to achieve absolute simultaneous measurements of four-DOF position and pose with a large measurement range. The success of this new grating encoder can benefit various multi-DOF positioning applications, especially for large-scale synthetic aperture optics (SAO), including stitching off-axis parabolic mirrors and pulse compression grating.

Abstract:The winding segmented permanent magnet linear synchronous motor has restrictions on the last absolute position acquisition when the power goes from off to on, and the traditional absolute position acquisition systems depend on complex battery and calibration systems. Therefore, a true absolute magnetic encoder based on the Vernier principle with error rejection and decoding technology is studied in this paper. First, the output signal of the magnetic encoder with noise was subjected to the adaptive ellipse parameter correction algorithm with recursive least squares (RLS), and the source output signal predicted and reconstructed. Furthermore, the RLS was optimized by the speed weighting factor and the forgetting factor to reduce the computational pressure and the iterative process. Second, one improved double second-order generalized integrator(DSOGI) decoding technology was investigated by extracting and separating the symmetric-positive sequence components in the unbalanced signal, and, using the phase-locked loop technique for tracking calculation, accurate speed and angle obtained. The adaptive ellipse parameter fitting algorithm effectively reduced the problem of overshoot and steady-state error of the DSOGI, which provides a practical and theoretical basis for the future application of the magnetic encoder. This trajectory arrangement not only avoids the influence of accumulated error on the accuracy of encoder, but it also solves the contradiction between high resolution and small volume, and the advantages over the special decoding chip IC-Haus were also verified by comprehensive experimental results.

Abstract:In order to achieve high-precision and robust measurement for a single-track absolute encoder, an improved subdivision algorithm based on machine vision technology is proposed. First, the composite subdivision algorithm combining RANdom SAmple Consensus and least square estimation is introduced. Second, the proposed algorithm is proved to be high-precision and effective to remove fault error from signal noise and spot by simulation. Finally, real test results show that the algorithm output angle stably achieves precision within 2.5 arc-seconds and accuracy up to 1.6 arc-seconds. Research results provide a high-precision and robust subdivision algorithm that is improved by modern machine vision technology of RANdom SAmple Consensus and it can be applied in the field of absolute angle sensor in the future.

Abstract:Encoders are the most commonly used position measurement sensors in industrial machines and robots. Compared to potentiometers, encoders have advantages in terms of environmental resistance and cost, and their detection speed and resolution are comparable to those of potentiometers, so the use of encoders in the field of precision positioning continues to expand. Since the accuracy of motor control depends on the accuracy of angle and angular velocity obtained from the encoder, encoders with high reliability and high accuracy are required. The authors have developed a high-resolution and high-accuracy absolute rotary encoder that applies eccentric rotation. However, eccentric rotation causes vibration due to disproportionate force, which may lead to deterioration of accuracy and lifetime. In this paper, we proposed a new angle calculation method that calculates the absolute angle from the signal characterized by the use of magnets with different magnetic flux densities. With the proposed method, the absolute angle is obtained with the same accuracy as the conventional method.

Abstract:∗As an inertial sensors assembly, the inertial measurement unit (IMU) must be calibrated before being used. This paper proposes a new IMU multi-position calibration algorithm that takes the Earth’s rotation rate and gravity as inputs, and calculates calibration parameters based on the two facts that: 1) norm of the accelerometer measurement vector is equal to the magnitude of gravity; 2) the dot product of gyro measurement vector and accelerometer measurement vector is equal to minus dot product of the Earth’s rotation rate and gravity. Two theorems about the rank of the involved matrix are given to prove the feasibility of estimation. The algorithm features that no high-precise instruments such as a turntable are in principle necessary. Simulations show feasibility of the proposed calibration algorithm.

Abstract:Angular measurement technology at high resolution for applications such as in hard disk drive manufacturing machines, precision measurement equipment and aspherical process machines requires a rotary encoder with high accuracy, high resolution and high response speed. However, a rotary encoder has angular deviation factors during operation due to scale error or installation error. It has been assumed to be impossible to achieve accuracy below 0.1? in angular measurement or control after the installation onto the rotating axis. Self-calibration (Lu and Trumper 2007 CIRP Ann. 56 499; Kim et?al 2011 Proc. MacroScale; Probst 2008 Meas. Sci. Technol. 19 015101; Probst et?al Meas. Sci. Technol. 9 1059; Tadashi and Makoto 1993 J. Robot. Mechatronics 5 448; Ralf et?al 2006 Meas. Sci. Technol. 17 2811) and cross-calibration (Probst et?al 1998 Meas. Sci. Technol. 9 1059; Just et?al 2009 Precis. Eng. 33 530; Burnashev 2013 Quantum Electron. 43 130) technologies for a rotary encoder have been actively discussed on the basis of the principle of circular closure. This discussion prompted the development of rotary tables which achieve reliable and high accuracy angular verification. We apply these technologies for the development of a rotary encoder not only to meet the requirement of super-high accuracy but also to meet that of super-high resolution. This paper presents the development of an encoder with 221 = 2097?152 resolutions per rotation (360?), that is, corresponding to a 0.62? signal period, achieved by the combination of a laser rotary encoder supplied by Magnescale Co., Ltd and a self-calibratable encoder (SelfA) supplied by The National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science & Technology (AIST). In addition, this paper introduces the development of a rotary encoder to guarantee ?0.03? accuracy at any point of the interpolated signal, with respect to the encoder at the minimum resolution of 233, that is, corresponding to a 0.0015? signal period after interpolation of 212 (= 4096) divisions through the interpolator.

A New Kind of Absolute Magnetic Encoder

Abstract:To fulfill the requirement of fields such as robotics, aviation, and special machining, motors with quill shafts or outer rotors have been used. For these special motors, the photoelectric encoder's volume is normally too big and easy to be polluted by oil or dust; magnetic encoder normally has poor accuracy, and alnico piece may not provide enough magnetic field coverage area. The aim of this essay is to find a new structure of magnetic encoder to improve the precision and magnetic field coverage area. By using two multi-pole alnico rings with a different number of pole pairs to provide a magnetic field, the coverage area could be improved. The position differences between two alnicos pole positions are used to calculate absolute angle value, so the accuracy of the encoder could be absolute and no less than that of a combined magnetic encoder with the same number of pole pairs. A special algorithm is proposed for decoding. This new kind of magnetic encoder could be used on special motors with quill shafts or outer rotors. Its volume and weight are less than the photoelectric encoder and have better performance on antipollution. The alnico ring is easy to modify to suit the structure of the motor.

Abstract:A virtual absolute optical encoder and decoder system is presented.It has advantages of high precision,compact structure and reliable output.The paper contains the characteristic of the encoder and coding theory,the stable electronic interpolation,and the achievement of high precision address by combining the INDEX signal and the interpolation result through ADC.Finally,it utilizes FPGA to build an embedded system,and achieves a reliable repeatable positioning system.The results show that the whole system can work well with stable and reliable outputs.

Abstract:The angular displacement sensor is used widely in robotics and other application fields. This article proposes a new type of multifunctional angular displacement sensor. This angular displacement sensor design integrates two microcontroller units (MCUs) on a small printed circuit board (PCB). The first unit, which is designated MCU-A, transmits the absolute angle to the second unit, which is designated MCU-B, through serial peripheral interface (SPI) communication. In MCU-B, the absolute angle output is converted into incremental ABZ and UVW output using a table lookup angle conversion algorithm. The proposed encoder has various output types and a simple structure, is small in size, and can be manufactured at low cost. The device can be applied in a variety of industrial production scenarios.

Abstract:A linear encoder that can be used for commercial absolute precision-positioning applications was designed and tested. This prototype consists of an improved single-track grating scale and a compact two-probe reading head. The specified grating scale was fabricated in such way that multiple reference codes can be superimposed physically on incremental grooves. The reading head is based on a two-probe design, where one probe is used to read the continuous incremental grooves by grating interferometry, while the other probe identifies the discrete reference codes by superimposing the codes with a stationary mask. In other words, the encoder enables the simultaneous measurement of both displacement and position of a precision stage. The so constructed linear encoder prototype was tested thoroughly. The period of the incremental grating structure was calibrated before the measurement range was set to 20 mm to include the two reference codes. The experimental results were verified, and an accuracy for the measured incremental displacement of at least 1 mu m was achieved with comparison with a laser interferometer used as the reference. Especially the distance between two reference codes was calculated to evaluate the positioning accuracy of the grating system. The positioning accuracy exceeds 0.22 mu m according to our statistical analysis of 12 groups of repeated measurements. (C) 2020 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract:This paper proposed a high precision absolute angular displacement time grating sensor, and was assembled into an integrated encoder. This absolute angle sensor contains two incremental sensors, namely, N1 measurement period fine measurement component and N2 measurement period coarse measurement component, N1 and N2 are mutually prime, and N1 > N2. The induction electrodes of the fine measurement component adopt differential design to minimize the effects of external electromagnetic interference and common mode interference between different sensing units so as to achieve high precision displacement measurement, the phase difference between two incremental sensor is used for absolute positioning. The reflecting ring design simplifies the structure of the encoder and facilitates sensor integration. The induction output signals of different components are cross connected through leads to the reflecting ring far away from the measurement component to the first harmonic error during the measurement period. The reading heads adopt a round, uniformly distributed design scheme, and the average effect of the whole circumference closed ring sampling scheme is beneficial for improving measurement accuracy and eliminating harmonic errors. A sensor prototype with a diameter of 83mm was manufactured and assembled into an integrated encoder. Experimental results show that the sensor achieve a precision of 12" over a full 360° measurement range and a resolution of 0.5", and it can realize absolute positioning.

A Novel Method and System Implementation for Precise Estimation of Single-Axis Rotational Angles

Abstract:Accurately estimating single-axis rotational angle changes is crucial in many high-tech domains. However, traditional angle measurement techniques are often constrained by sensor limitations and environmental interferences, resulting in significant deficiencies in precision and stability. Moreover, current methodologies typically rely on fixed-axis rotation models, leading to substantial discrepancies between measured and actual angles due to axis misalignment. To address these issues, this paper proposes an innovative method for single-axis rotational angle estimation. It introduces a calibration technique for installation errors between inertial measurement units and the overall measurement system, effectively translating dynamic rotational inertial outputs to system enclosure outputs. Subsequently, the method employs triaxial accelerometers combined with zero-velocity detection technology to estimate the rotation axis position. Finally, it delves into analyzing the relationship between quaternion and axis-angle, aimed at reducing noise interference for precise rotational angle estimation. Based on this proposed methodology, a Low-Cost, a High Accuracy Measurement System (HAMS) integrating sensor fusion was designed and implemented. Experimental results demonstrate static measurement errors below ±0.15° and dynamic measurement errors below ±0.5° within a ±180° range.
