Abstract:Fabricating porous structures to manipulate ion transport and storage is of great significance for both fundamental research and practical applications. Recent advances in additive manufacturing have opened up new opportunities to develop hierarchical zeolites as ideal adsorbents for modulating ion dynamics, while the advanced synthetic strategies and structural parameters that determine their microscopic adsorption and immobilization behavior remain largely unexplored. Here we develop a versatile direct ink writing approach to produce Zeolite-A lattices (ZALs) with controlled patterns and hierarchical porosity. Combining ion adsorption kinetics with first-principles calculations provides insights into ion exchange, migration, and localization pathways through the oxygen-membered rings that underlie the exceptionally high Cs+ adsorption capacity of up to 106.3 mg/g. The adsorption kinetics fitting results showed that the quasi-second-order fit of the ZALs adsorbent generally exhibited higher R2 values than the quasi-first-order fit, indicating that the adsorption of Cs+ was ion exchange. Furthermore, the excellent radiation resistance and the developed geopolymer coating technology endow the ion-loaded the ZAL with near-unity ion immobilization efficiency. Our findings not only demonstrate an advanced method for large-scale production of high-performance adsorbents, but also provide microscopic insights into the underlying mechanisms of ion adsorption and storage, paving the way for efficient hazardous ion management.
