Abstract:It is very important to predict the concentration of hazardous vapor in the air when some flammable or toxic liquid is released on the ground. In order to achieve the aim, the evaporation rate of released liquid must be known, which is based on understanding the evaporation dynamic process. In this paper, wind tunnel evaporation experiments of benzene was made to study the dynamic characteristics of evaporation process for a mono-component liquid. The evaporation rate was obtained by measuring the mass loss rate of the evaporating liquid. The experiments results indicated that the evaporation rate of benzene increased as wind speed or pool depth increased. When the evaporation area was the same, the evaporation rate decreased as the characteristic size of the liquid pool increased. And when the evaporation surface was located above the ground, the evaporation rate was greater than that of evaporation surface located on the ground. The evaporation process of benzene was influenced by wind speed, characteristic size of the liquid pool and degree of atmospheric turbulence, i.e., the evaporation of benzene was controlled by boundary layer evaporation. So, during the process of developing an evaporation model of the substance such as benzene, which has stronger volatility and lower saturation concentration in the air, the basic evaporation process itself can be ignored. Moreover, the influence of pool depth on evaporation indicated that heat transfer was very important in the evaporation process. Heat transfer and mass transfer should be considered at the same time when an evaporation mathematical model is developed.

Abstract:According to benzene evaporation experiments in wind tunnel, the widely used evaporation models, such as Mackay & Matsugu model, GRAY model, BAU model, SUBTEC model, EPA model, NIOH-1 model and NIOH-2 model, were evaluated. The results shown that only the evaporation rate predicted by EPA model and NIOH-1 model were no more than measured. Mackay & Matsugu model and SUBTEC model were very suitable for constituting. safety procedures. About modeling veracity, errors between results predicted by Mackay 4 Matsugu model, NIOH-1 model and SUBTEC model and measured were little. Errors of Mackay & Matsugu model and NIOH-1 model were about 10% and 17%, respectively. NIOH-1 model and BAU model were fit to the situation of less wind speed or laminar flow. And NIOH-2 model, GRAY model and SUBTEC model were fit to the situation of greater wind speed or turbulent flow. Moreover, Mackay & Matsugu model and EPA model were fit to all situations.

Abstract:In a gas-solid fluidized bed, volatile liquid injection results in complex flow behaviors in the spray zone. To characterize the liquid existence forms (droplets and liquid films) and fluidization properties in the volatile spray zone, a mesoscale-theory based volatile spray zone model is developed with the consideration of hydrodynamics, heat transfer, and mass transfer. A new energy-based stability condition is established according to two competition and coordination relationships, consisting of the energy dissipation based on the liquid-solid interface change and suspension and transporting of particles. The modeling results agree well with the experimental bed temperature as well as void fraction data, and show that the variation of liquid existence forms is dependent on the ratio of different energy consumption rates under the stability condition. Moreover, the gas-solid drag coefficient in the volatile spray zone is modified. Simulation results also reasonably describe the bed pressure drop fluctuation and particle velocity distribution.
An improved numerical model for evaporation with multicomponent gas

Abstract:Evaporation is a key process in a wide range of industrial applications. To gain a better insight into this process, investigation on the evaporation model is an important aspect. In the present study, it is found that the computation with the Hertz-Knudsen-Schrage model is not easy to converge in the numerical simulation of the evaporation with multicomponent gas. The reason for the divergence is that the Hertz-Knudsen-Schrage model will lead to an improper vapor mass fraction which is much larger than the saturated vapor mass fraction in the iterations. To improve the convergence performance, an improved model for evaporation with multicomponent gas is proposed. In the improved evaporation model, when the predicted vapor density is larger than the saturated vapor density, a strategy that calculates the volumetric mass transfer rate with the difference between the saturated vapor density and the current vapor density will be implemented. As a result, the vapor density is bounded by the saturated values and no improper large vapor mass fraction arises in the iterations. The improved evaporation model shows much better convergence performance. In the case of the present study, the improved evaporation model can converge with the time step of 5×10 −6 s, while the original Hertz-Knudsen-Schrage model cannot converge with the time step of 5×10 −9 s. The improved evaporation model is also compared with the empirical correlations and shows a good agreement.

Abstract:The mass transfer resistance of mono-component liquid mainly comes from vapor phase resistance, and the evaporation process is composed of 2 steps. The mass transfer resistance of multi-component liquid comes from not only vapor phase resistance but also liquid phase resistance, and its evaporation process is composed of 3 steps. Experimental research on evaporation dynamics behavior of benzene, naphtha and crude oil were done. The results indicated that evaporation of benzene was influenced by wind speed, pool diameter and turbulence degree of airflow. The evaporation process was mainly controlled by boundary layer control evaporation, and the basis evaporation process could be neglected. The evaporation mass was linear with time. The evaporation of naphtha was controlled by boundary layer control evaporation at some degree. The evaporation mass was proportional to t(0.7). The evaporation of crude oil was hardly influenced by wind speed and pool diameter. The evaporation of crude oil was hardly controlled by boundary layer control evaporation. The evaporation mass was proportional to t(0.55) or Igt.

Abstract:Vapor Cloud Explosion (VCE) is one of the main industry accidents. Many models have been developed to predict accident consequences. And the weight of vapor in the cloud before cloud is ignited is a very important parameter for these models. In this paper, numerical simulation on the weight of vapor in the cloud caused by evaporation of flammable and volatile liquid released is done. Firstly, pool dynamic spreading and evaporation processes are analyzed in details. Secondly, the shortcomings of current models describing these processes are pointed out. Conservation of mass is used to connect spreading model and evaporation model. And factors that have effects on total quantity of vapor in cloud, such as minimum pool depth, release mode and geography condition around (dike exists or not), are also considered. In order to solve the differential equations, finite difference and Newton iterance are used. Thirdly, simulation on the weight of vapor in the cloud caused by evaporation of benzene released is given. At last, research emphases in this field in future are pointed out.

Abstract:In this study, in order to establish a numerical boiling and condensation model on subcooled pool boiling, the numerical simulations based on the MARS (Multi‐interface Advection and Reconstruction Solver) with a phase‐change model including bubble growth and condensation processes are performed. As a result, it is found that the numerical results of both bubble growth and condensation rates are very slow compared with the experimental results and the existing analytical models. In order to solve this discrepancy, the original boiling and condensation model is improved by introducing the following models; (1) the phase‐change model in the original enthalpy method based on a mass fraction is replaced to that based on a volume fraction (i.e., the improved phase‐change model); (2) a relaxation time derived by considering unsteady heat conduction is introduced into the improved phase‐change model. Resulting from the numerical simulation with the improved phase change model combined with the relaxation time of the phase‐change process, the numerical results in both bubble growth and condensation processes show in good agreement with the trend of experimental result and the existing analytical models. Moreover, In order to further progress the numerical simulations of bubble growth process, the patch‐work calculations with changing grid size have been performed in this study.

Abstract:Toxic vapor evaporated from released toxic liquid can cause people poisoning and environmental pollution.It is important for predicting toxic vapor concentration in air to forecast evaporation rate of toxic liquid.Especially for multi-component liquid,the evaporation process is complex,and evaporation rate is predicted by experimental model or semi-experimental model.And the influence of thermal transitivity is hardly considered.The model of predicting evaporation mass and temperature of two-component liquid was developed.The wind tunnel experiment device was designed.The solution composed of benzene and ethanol,which at different volume ratio,was placed in wind tunnel to make experiments.The measured value was compared with the predicted value.The result indicates that the predicted evaporation mass and temperature of solution are equivalent to the measured ones,and the average error is 25.82% and 33.79% respectively,thus providing the basis to research evaporation process of multi-component liquid.

Abstract:The present investigation considers both the interactions among active sites or bubbles and the nonlinear dynamic characteristics of the boiling processes to analyze the stochastic and nonlinear features of boiling systems. A bubble size distribution function is derived by using bubble number balance. A new method is then proposed for predicting pool nucleate boiling heat transfer flux. The present model is in good agreement with previous experimental results, which indicates that this presented theory is more reasonable than traditional ones.

Abstract:Multi-component droplets from daily activities and production processes severely degrade indoor air quality. Their health hazards and removal efficiency depend on size and composition, significantly affected by evaporation and growth. The phase transition process is complex, involving a broad spectrum of droplet sizes with diverse heat and mass transfer characteristics. Components within the droplets experience simultaneous phase transitions at differing rates and mass transfer directions. This study aims to refine the existing evaporation model of single-component droplets in continuous flows by theoretically integrating the effects of varying droplet sizes and multiple components. A multi-component droplet evaporation/growth model that spans the entire range of droplet sizes has been developed, and predictions have been made based on this model. Utilizing MATLAB, this model accurately predicts the indoor dynamics of multi-component droplets, with deviations under 16 % from experiments. It improves accuracy by over 25 % across droplet sizes via dimensionless transfer coefficients and boosts precision by over 24 % for multi-component droplets with zero-diffusion transport. The radius of the droplet after phase change can reach 8.42 × 10 −6 m and remains suspended in the air for an extended period. This study establishes a solid theoretical foundation for accurately predicting the indoor distribution of multi-component droplets.

Abstract:The dynamics process of multi-component evaporation was analyzed and the evaporation process was carried out in three stages.Using the wind tunnel,the dynamic characteristic of evaporation process for benzene-toluene and benzene-ethanol solution was studied at the condition of different wind speed,evaporation area and liquid level position.The results indicate that the evaporations of benzene-toluene solution and benzene-ethanol solution are all influenced by wind speed,evaporation area and the degree of airflow turbulence,which show that the evaporation process is controlled by boundary layer evaporation.So, the wind speed,evaporation area and ground roughness only need to be taken into account when the evaporation model is developed.On the basis of analysis for relationship between evaporation mass and evaporation time,the power relationship between them is more easily found when the evaporation capability and volume ratio between the two components are closer to each other,wind speed is higher and evaporation area is bigger and the average value of the power is about 0.80.

Abstract:This paper proposes a vaporization model for detailed numerical simulations of a reactive interface. The proposed model represents a preliminary attempt to combine vaporization models based on heat flux and species mass flux to take each model's advantages concerning numerical accuracy, robustness and applicability. We utilize a conservative level set method to reduce unphysical mass loss in capturing the deformable interface, and the ghost fluid method to accurately impose various jump conditions across the interface. Four validations are conducted to demonstrate both the strengths and limitations of the two original models. Since the vapor mass fraction is relevant in realistic applications, we add the species solver to the heat flux based model and assess the coupling strategy in different situations. The feasibility of switching between the two frameworks in the coupled vaporization model is also demonstrated. Finally, the coupled model is applied to simulations of deformable/moving droplet under high-ambient-temperature conditions. The results of the simulations are consistent with analytical and experimental data. Although additional work is required, the coupled vaporization model exhibits potential as a means for modeling spray combustion. (C) 2018 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Abstract:Mixture working fluids have the advantages of active design and adjustable physical properties, therefore it has a promising future in many power and refrigeration applications. Studies on the evaporation process of mixture nanodroplets are helpful to reveal the mechanism of heat transfer at the interface of mixture working fluids. However, at present, there are few studies on the evaporation of mixture droplet, and the conclusions on the pure fluids evaporation cannot be directly applied to the mixture working fluids, thus it is necessary to carry out specific research on the evaporation of mixtures. In this study, molecular dynamics simulation was used to study the evaporation process of R32/R1234yf nanodroplets with different compositions (x(R32)=0, 0.2, 0.4, 0.6, 0.8, 1) in a large space. The dynamic changes of evaporation rates of droplets with different components were compared, and the evaporation characteristics of droplet with different concentrations were analyzed in combination with the density, temperature and concentration field distribution near the liquid-vapor interface during the evaporation process. The results show that the evaporation rate of the mixture nanodroplets is lower than the linear interpolation with those of the two components, which is similar to the heat transfer deterioration of the mixture working fluids in pool or flow boiling. The prediction deviation of R32/R1234yf mixture nanodroplet evaporation by the D-2 law is around 80%. Considering the scale effect and the interfacial concentration gradient, the prediction accuracy of the D-2 law can be improved.

Abstract:The process of water evaporation is always accompanied by buoyancy and thermocapillary convections. To explore the effect of the flow on the evaporation rate and energy transfer, a mathematical model including liquid, vapor, solids, and the temperature jumps measured experimentally is established, and a series of numerical simulations of water evaporation in a cylindrical pool heated by the sidewall is performed. The results show that buoyant convection enhances the evaporation rate by affecting the temperature distribution in the liquid layer, while the thermocapillary convection transfers heat from the sidewall to the free surface. As the heating temperature rises, the Benard-Marangoni convection appears and has a greater effect on promoting evaporation than buoyancy convection working alone. The increasing depth of the liquid layer significantly promotes the development of buoyant convection, which leads to temperature and velocity fluctuations in the liquid layer at high heating temperatures. The coupling of temperature and velocity fields is responsible for the evaporation-inducing instability between two critical pressure ratios. Periodic fluctuations in temperature and velocity lead to the corresponding periodic evolution of the convective structure.

Abstract:Evaporation of liquid nitrogen in another immiscible liquid occurs in many industrial applications. Existing oversimplified one-dimensional (1D) quasi-steady models, although can quantitatively predict the evaporation rate by introducing an empirical fitting parameter, rely on configurations inconsistent with experimental observation so more rigorous models are required to get in-depth physical insights and improve modeling capability. This study proposes a 2D quasi-steady-state theoretical model, free of fitting parameters, that predicts the bubble growth rate and estimates the heat transfer rate for a liquid nitrogen droplet evaporating inside a liquid pool within the spherical bubble regime. The droplet's shape and position within a spherical bubble are determined by the equilibrium between the gravitational force and the upward pressure force resulting from the vapor flow between the droplet and the pool. The vapor layer thickness is calculated to be on the order of 10 microns. Notably, the primary contribution to heat transfer arises from the lower portion of the droplet, leading to local heat flux values up to approximately six times higher at the bottom compared to the top. The predicted bubble growth is quantitatively consistent with experimental data within the capillary spherical bubble regime. Furthermore, the overall heat transfer rate Q exhibits a distinct scaling relationship with the volume ratio between the bubble and droplet, yielding Q∼(Vb/Vd)−0.1 .

Coupling dynamic blow down and pool evaporation model for LNG

Abstract:Treating the dynamic effects of accidental discharges of liquefied natural gas (LNG) is important for realistic predictions of pool radius. Two phenomena have important influence on pool spread dynamics, time-varying discharge (blow down) and pool ignition. Time-varying discharge occurs because a punctured LNG tanker or storage tank drains with a decreasing liquid head and decreasing head-space pressure. Pool ignition increases the evaporation rate of a pool and consequently decreases the ultimate pool area. This paper describes an approach to treat these phenomena in a dynamic pool evaporation model. The pool evaporation model developed here has two separate regimes. Early in the spill, momentum forces dominate and the pool spreads independently of pool evaporation rate and the corresponding heat transfer rate. After the average pool depth drops below a minimum value, momentum forces are largely dissipated and the thin edges of the pool completely evaporate, so pool area is established by the heat transfer rate. The maximum extent of a burning pool is predicted to be significantly less than that of an unignited pool because the duration of the first regime is reduced by higher heat transfer rates. The maximum extent of an LNG pool is predicted to be larger upon accounting for blow down compared with using a constant average discharge rate. However, the maximum pool extent occurs only momentarily before retreating.
Boiling and evaporation model for liquid-gas flows: A sharp and conservative method based on the geometrical VOF approach

Abstract:A novel phase change model is developed for the direct numerical simulations of the liquid-gas flows, devoting to the evaporation and boiling flows in the framework of the geometrical volume of fluid method. The main focus of the present work is to impose accurate jump conditions for heat and mass transfers across the interface, while the conservative properties of the governing equations are maintained. We tackle this problem by employing an embedded boundary method, which divides the computational domain into the liquid region and the gas region separately, besides, the application of the finite volume method enables us to conserve the energy and the mass precisely. Results are then presented for a series of benchmark problems, and the accuracy and the robustness of the numerical methods are validated. In particular, two very challenging numerical tests are simulated: a droplet levitating above a hot plate or a liquid pool whose temperature is much higher than the boiling temperature. This kind of problem, known as the Leidenfrost effect, is non-trivial in numerical simulations, because the boiling and the evaporation can occur simultaneously on different regions of the same liquid interface. In addition, very careful calculations are required in the thin film of saturated vapor which is entrapped between the bottom of the drop and the plate. We show that the newly implemented numerical methods can accurately reproduce experimental and theoretical results, serving as convincing evidence of the superiority of our method.

This model involves solving coupled mass and energy balances, and chemical potential equations using a genetic algorithm. A visual, windows-based, user-friendly design software has been developed using VB programming language. Using this software, two dehydration cases have been studied. The results presented here indicate the value of this software as a design tool.
