Abstract:Constructing on-chip or inter-silicon (inter-die/inter-chip) networks to connect multiple processors extends the system capability and scalability. It is a key issue to implement a flexible router that can fit into various application scenarios. This paper proposes a multi-mode adaptable router that can support both circuit and wormhole switching with supplying flexible working strategies for specific traffic patterns in diverse applications. The limitation of mono-mode switched routers is shown at first, followed by algorithm exploration in the proposed router for choosing the proper working strategy in a specific network. We then present the performance improvement when applying the mixed circuit/wormhole switching mode to different applications, and analyze the image decoding as a case study. The multi-mode router has been implemented with different configurations in a 65nm CMOS technology. The one with 8-bit flit width is demonstrated together with a multi-core processor to show the feasibility. Working at 350MHz, the average power consumption of the whole system is 22mW.

Abstract:We design and fabricate a four-port wavelength-selective optical router on silicon-on-insulator wafer for photonic networks-on-chip. The router consists of four basic operation blocks. Each is constructed by one microring resonator (MRR) based add-drop filter rather than the traditional two microrings based 2 x 2 optical crossbar. It can provide multiwavelength routing for each path to increase the aggregate data transmission bandwidth. The possible 12 I/O routing paths are experimentally observed in the transmission spectra and each of them has the ability to route four group wavelengths simultaneously in the measured spectral range. The device has a small footprint (similar to 78 x 100 mu m(2)) and low power consumption (6.58 mW).

Abstract:We design and fabricate a wavelength-selective nonblocking 4 × 4 silicon optical router based on microring resonator for use in future integrated photonic interconnection networks. We successfully demonstrate 12 possible I/O routing paths and present 13 nonblocking operating states, including four broadcasting states, with worst-case extinction ratio and cross talk of 21.05 and -21.56 dB, respectively. Thermal tuning is employed to compensate the resonance shift of microring resonators caused by fabrication errors and adjust the resonance to match the International Telecommunication Unit grid with the channel spacing of 100 GHz.

Abstract:We have proposed and investigated micro-ring add-drop switch and M-Z interferometric element for on-chip router applications based on silicon hybrid plasmonic waveguide. The proposed silicon hybrid plasmonic waveguide possesses lower propagation loss compared with conventional plasmonic metal-insulator-metal waveguide. By employing this low loss waveguide, it is found that the proposed ring add-drop switch possesses high transmission efficiency (-1 dB), and the extinction ratio can be as high as 30 dB at 1.556 mu m. In addition, the transmission efficiency of drop port for the M-Z interferometric element can be -1.15 dB at 1.55 mu m. The designed elements are essential for the on-chip router in optical interconnect.

Abstract:Optical network-on-chip( ONoC) has many characteristics superior to electrical interconnection and has emerged as a promising alternative. To improve the performance of optical on-chip networks,a novelring-based 4 × 4nonblocking silicon optical router was proposed by means of optical module method. This structure just composes evenmicroring-resonator-based switching elements and six waveguide crossings,which reduce power consumption,device area and insertion loss. Finally,the topology performance were evalutated in terms of insertion loss and power consumption.The simulation results demonstrate that the proposed architecture consumes 8% less power and 7% less optical insertion loss.

Abstract:Photonic Networks-on-Chip (NoC) is considered as a promising candidate to interconnect a large number of processing cores. The heart of a photonic NoC is the on chip photonic interconnection network which is composed of silicon waveguides and optical routers. In this paper, we propose a scalable and non-blocking passive optical router design using micro-ring resonators (MRRs), namely the generic wavelength-routed optical router (GWOR). We first introduce a 4×4 GWOR router structure and then show how to construct larger size GWORs using 4×4 GWOR as the basic building block The wavelength assignment schemes for any size GWORs are also derived. For N×N GWOR, N-l input wavelengths are needed and iV-2 different types of MRRs are used. The analysis shows that 4×4 GWOR uses the least number of MMRs and has the least power loss compared with existing router designs.

Abstract:Photonic network-on-chip (NoC) architectures are emerging as a new paradigm to interconnect a large number of processing cores at chip level, meeting the pressing demand for extremely high bandwidth and low power consumption. Optical routers, which are typically composed of silicon waveguides and optical switches, play a key role in an on-chip photonic interconnection network. In this paper, we propose a micro-ring-resonator (MRR)-based, scalable, and non-blocking passive optical router design, namely the generic wavelength-routed optical router (GWOR). We first introduce the four 4 x 4 GWOR router structures and then show how to construct GWORs of larger sizes by using the proposed 4 x 4 GWORs as the primitive building blocks. The number of MRRs used in the proposed GWOR is the least among the existing passive router designs for the same network size. In addition, we show that the power loss experienced on GWORs is lower than other comparative designs. Furthermore, to improve the bandwidth and fault tolerance capability of the GWORs, the redundant GWOR (RGWOR) structure is presented. RGWOR can provide multiple routing paths between each pair of input-output ports by cascading different types of GWORs.

Abstract:An asynchronous network-on-chip (NoC) router is presented in the paper. To improve performance with regard to the structure method, a wormhole control with four virtual channels is adopted in our design, where each channel is further divided into sub-channels. Overall, our design offers two merits in terms of its circuit details. Firstly, both dual-rail and 1 of 4 asynchronous circuits are incorporated in our router, which supports a faster and more energy-efficient handshake than a simple dual-rail design. Secondly, a multi-resource arbiter is employed in our allocator, which functions faster and more robustly compared to other arbiters. Our design occupies an area of 0.0145 mm2 in 28nm technology and consumes 0.156 pJ/bit at a supply voltage of 0.9V.

Abstract:In order to solve the repeated design of NoC router, this paper proposed a lightweight NoC router after a study of NoC's characteristics and Operating mode. In the low frequency data interaction application, the proposed router has a high cost performance. It can be mapped in a variety of NoC topology by changing the number of each internal module and that will help to reduce the design cycle of multi-core NoC system. At the same, the maximum data throughput is 703.3Gbps, it can effectively meet the demand of data interaction in NoC.

Abstract:A monolithic 8 × 8 transmitter-router chip fabricated on InGaAlAs-InP multi-quantum well wafer for distributed wavelength routing network in the O-band with a channel spacing of 400 GHz is experimentally demonstrated. A tunable V-cavity laser (VCL) array, a cyclic-arrayed waveguide grating router (AWGR) and a semiconductor amplifier (SOA) array are integrated using the quantum-well intermixing (QWI) technique for its fabrication simplicity and cost effectiveness. A 200 GHz-spaced compact-size VCL is demonstrated with a 27 nm tuning range and a side-mode suppression ratio (SMSR) around 40 dB using a single-electrode controlled tuning. The chip output power is 24.6 mW. Measurement results of the transmitter-router chip show that all 64 input-output combinations have cyclic response spectra. After passing through the SOA with 80 mA bias current, an output power of about 9.6 mW and optical signal-to-noise ratio (OSNR) up to 39 dB have been measured. The demonstrated transmitter-router chip is fabricated on the same quantum well structure without requiring multiple epitaxial growth and complex grating fabrication. The characteristics of multi-wavelength and multi-port transmissions enable the distributed optical routing networks with flexible bandwidth allocation, which can find wide application in datacenters and high-performance computers.

Abstract:The complex applications of SoC make on-chip communication, which has different performance requirements and the interconnection, become the performance bottleneck. We design a network-on-chip router, which supports quality-of-service, providing guaranteed services and best-effort services in parallel. Our router adopts connection-oriented scheme to provide hard end-to-end delay guarantee in fine grained mode for guaranteed services, and adopts connectionless packet-switching mode to support best-effort services communication. It also implements a traffic-balanced adaptive routing algorithm to improve the average communication performance.

Abstract:We propose and demonstrate a four-port mode-selective optical router on a silicon-on-insulator platform. The passive routing property ensures that the router consumes no power to establish the optical links. For each port, input signals with different modes are selectively routed to the target ports through the pre-designed architecture. In general, the device intrinsically supports broadcasting of multiplexed signals from one port to the other three ports through mode division multiplexing. In some applications, the input signal from one port would only be sent to another port as in reconfigurable optical routers. The prototype is constructed by mode multiplexers/de-multiplexers and single-mode interconnect waveguides between them. The insertion losses for all optical links are lower than 8.0 dB, and the largest optical crosstalk values are lower than -18.7 dB and -22.0 dB for the broadcasting and port-to-port routing modes, respectively, at the wavelength range of 1525-1565 nm. In order to verify the routing functionality, a 40-Gbps bidirectional data transmission experiment is performed. The device offers a promising building block for passive routing by utilizing the dimension of the modes.

Abstract:As basic routing element, structure and principle of cross coupling two ring resonator are presented, and waveguide parameters are optimized for phase-matching and single-mode propagation. Using eightgroup basic elements, a new one-stage five-port polymer optical router is proposed, and it can optically route four channel wavelength data streams along definite-path in 2-D plane. Under the selected four channel wavelengths, the insertion losses along all routing paths are within 0.03-0.62 dB, the maximum crosstalk of all routing operations is less than -39 dB, and the device footprint size is about 0.31 mm2. A universal novel structure and routing scheme of N-stage cascaded five-port optical router are presented, and it contains 4N channel wavelengths that can be routed by the device. Compared with the previously reported silicon optical routers, this polymer device possesses similar ring radius (-10 pm) and device size < 1 mm2). Because of simple processing technology, low cost and good scalability, this device shows potential application of wideband signal routing in optical networks-on-chip (ONoC). (C) 2014 Elsevier B.V. Abstract:The router is a network device that is used to connect subnetwork and packet-switched networking by directing the data packets to the intended IP addresses. It succeeds the traffic between different systems and allows several devices to share the internet connection. The router is applicable for the effective commutation in system on chip (SoC) modules for network on chip (NoC) communication. The research paper emphasizes the design of the two dimensional (2D) router hardware chip in the Xilinx integrated system environment (ISE) 14.7 software and further logic verification using the data packets transmitted from all input/output ports. The design evaluation is done based on the pre-synthesis device utilization summary relating to different field programmable gate array (FPGA) boards such as Spartan-3E (XC3S500E), Spartan-6 (XC6SLX45), Virtex-4 (XC4VFX12), Virtex-5 (XC5VSX50T), and Virtex-7 (XC7VX550T). The 64-bit data logic is verified on the different ports of the router configuration in the Xilinx and Modelsim waveform simulator. The Virtex-7 has proven the fast-switching speed and optimal hardware parameters in comparison to other FPGAs.

Abstract:In the design of 3D Network-on-chip, performance of the router is so important that it directly impacts the capability of 3D NoC. Considering the advantages and disadvantages of packet switching and circuit switching, this paper presents a mass message transmission aware buffer-less router for 3D NoC based on packet-circuit switching, which has the advantage of low buffer consumption and short transmission delay. That makes it suitable for mass message transmission on 3D NoC. We synthesize our mass message transmission aware buffer-less Packet-Circuit Switching Router for 3D NoC with XILINX 12.2. The device type is xc6vlx550t. The router can achieve a max frequency of 353.526 MHz, while the throughput of every channel is 16 Gbps.

Abstract:Network-on-chip (NoC), one of the most promising interconnection schemes for complex SoC design, presents large design space. Because the influence of different parameters on the performance of the NoC varies significantly, it is desirable to analyze and understand specific effect of these parameters on the overall performance in order to provide NoC designers guidelines to optimize their plans. In this paper, we mainly focus on the router design parameters on both system level including traffic pattern, network topology and routing algorithm, and architecture level including arbitration algorithm and buffer mechanism. At last, we analyze the resource consumption of the router and propose possible approaches to reduce the cost.
