Abstract:This paper presents a research on the effect of rubber types and rubber content on concrete properties. In the study, rubberized concrete were designed by replacing coarse aggregate in normal concrete with ground and crushed scrap tire rubber in various volume ratios. The basic mechanical property parameters, compressive strength and modulus of elasticity of rubberized concrete, were tested and studied. Damping ratio is the main parameter representing the property of materials in vibration reduction. Simply supported beams were tested using free vibration method to determine the relationships between damping ratio in small deformation and the size as well as amount of rubber particles in rubberized concrete. Natural frequencies of the simply supported beams were tested and compared with theoretical and numerical solutions to verify the validity of the experimental set up. The experiments revealed that strength and modulus elasticity of rubberized concrete decreased with the increasing amount of rubber content. Compressive strength and modulus of elasticity of crushed rubberized concrete were lower than that of ground rubberized concrete. ACI equation could reasonably predict modulus of elasticity of rubberized concrete. It was observed that the damping ratios of rubberized concrete improved considerably compared to normal concrete. The crushed rubberized concrete had better damping properties than that of ground rubberized concrete. The optimal content of rubber would be less than 30% to get the satisfactory strength, modulus of elasticity and damping properties.
