Abstract:A novel three-level zero-voltage zero-current switching (ZVZCS) DC/DC converter is proposed in this paper. A tapped-inductor is used to replace the normal output filter inductor, so that the circulating current in the zero-state can be reset to zero. The reset voltage and the reset time can be set conveniently just by simply changing the winding ratio of the tapped inductor. The converter achieves a zero-current tuning off for inner switching, and a zero-voltage tuning on for outer switching. No circulating current exists in the zero state, so that the loss in the on-state is reduced, and the efficiency can be improved. The experimental results verify that the ZVZCS has low voltage stress, zero-voltage and zero-current switching.

Abstract:This chapter introduces a soft-switching silicon carbide (SiC) three-phase four-wire back-to-back (BTB) converter. A three-phase four-wire BTB converter composed of a front-end pulse-width-modulation (PWM) rectifier and a load-side PWM inverter is widely used in alternating current sources, uninterruptible power supply, motor drives, and micro-grids. The rectifier and the inverter in the zero-voltage-switching (ZVS) BTB converter share one auxiliary circuit to realize the ZVS operation of all the switches. In the converter, the current commutation of each leg in one switching period depends on the PWM scheme and the filter inductor current polarity. A short-circuit stage is designed to achieve the ZVS condition. The resonant parameters are critical for the performance of the ZVS converter. The loss distribution of the ZVS BTB converter is different from that of the traditional BTB converter. The operation principle of the ZVS BTB converter is verified on a 9 kW prototype with SiC metal-oxidesemiconductor field-effect transistor devices.

Abstract:This paper proposes a novel zero-voltage-switching (ZVS) three-phase four-wire hack-to-back (BTB) converter topology and its ZVS sinusoidal pulsewidth modulation (ZVS-SPWM) scheme. With the proposed ZVS-SPWM scheme, all the main switches in both the rectifier side and inverter side and the auxiliary switch can realize ZVS turn on with only one auxiliary circuit. In addition, the auxiliary switch only needs to operate once in each switching period, which can cut down an extra loss of the auxiliary circuit. The operation stage analysis is introduced, and the ZVS condition for the switches is derived. The ZVS BTB converter is investigated with respect to both balanced and unbalanced load conditions. In additon, the soft-switching parameter design guideline is discussed. Finally, the proposed ZVS BTB converter and its ZVS-SPWM scheme are verified on a 9-kW prototype with the SiC-MOSFET device.

Abstract:This paper presents design and experiment of a 20kW power conversion module applied in bidirectional DC solid-state transformer (SST). This module consists of a front-end full-bridge circuit with auxiliary soft-switching branch, and a LLC resonant converter serving as an isolated dc transformer. With the discussed modulation scheme, all power devices of the module feature zero-voltage-switching (ZVS) over full load range. Experiments are performed on the built setup, and the results show that for forward or backward power flow, this two stage SST module can achieve 98% efficiency at rated power.

Abstract:A new modulation scheme for the active clamping zero-voltage switching (ZVS) inverter is proposed. With the proposed modulation scheme, the inverter can realize ZVS operation in all switching devices and can remarkably suppress the reverse recovery current in insulated-gate bipolar transistor's antiparallel diodes as well. All the switches can operate at a fixed frequency in the new modulation scheme. Also, with the new modulation scheme, the ZVS inverter has some voltage boost capability, which is suitable for renewable energy generation. The inverter can achieve ZVS in all the switches under the grid current power factor angle from zero to +/-pi/6. The soft-switching condition of this inverter is analyzed. The operation principal and design guideline are described in detail. The previous theory is verified in a 30-kW inverter prototype.

Abstract:To improve the efficiency and power density of AC-DC power supply, a GaN HEMT totem-pole Power Factor Correction (PFC) converter with Zero-Voltage-Switching (ZVS) PWM control is proposed in this paper. The principle of the circuit and its stage analysis are introduced. The ZVS condition is derived. In addition, the design of resonant choke Lr is discussed. Finally, the ZVS PWM converter and control is verified by the experiment.
A Soft-switching Active-clamp Flyback Converter with Full ZVS-range

Abstract:An active clamp flyback converter, which can achieve ZVS in the whole operation range, is presented. This circuit can recycle transformer leakage energy, minimize switch voltage stress and provide a mechanism for achieving ZVS of both the primary and auxiliary switches. ZVS also limits the turn-off di/dt of the output rectifier, reducing rectifier switching losses, and switching noises due to diode reverse recovery. The behavior of the operation mode of this converter is analyzed and the design considerations for the key components and derices are given. The soft-switching characteristic of the converter is verified by a 100W prototype.

Abstract:This paper proposes a new pulse-width modulation scheme for a Zero-Voltage-Switching (ZVS) single-phase inverter to operate in rectifier mode. The ZVS single-phase inverter and its ZVS-SPWM modulation scheme is reviewed. The commutation in rectifier mode is analyzed to design the proper modulation scheme. ZVS turn-on of switching devices is achieved as well as the reverse recovery of body-diode is relieved with the new modulation in rectifier mode. The principle of ZVS rectifier operation is explained in detail and verified on a 100kHz ZVS single-phase inverter prototype. The modulation scheme of rectifier operation makes the ZVS single-phase inverter suitable for bidirectional power conversion applications such as energy storage system and vehicle-to-grid (V2G) chargers.

Abstract:Depending on the research and classification of typical full-bridge soft-switching power converters,a full-load range zero-voltage zero-current soft-switching full-bridge power converter topology with auxiliary resonant network was put forward,designed and analyzed.By using dead time adaptive regulated phase-shift-control method,which makes the dead time conjugate with the resonance processes affected by the circuit energy,the full-load range zero-voltage turn-on and proximate zero-voltage soft turn-off with effective results are realized for the power devices of converter's lead leg.At the same time,aimed at the problem of soft turn-on and soft turn-off being difficult to be compatible in the full-load range for the power devices of converter's lag leg,a realizing method of soft-switching is proposed,which makes the zero-voltage and zero-current technology combined together.Through the cooperative function of various auxiliary measures,the full-load range zero-voltage turn-on,and soft turn-off combined zero-voltage with zero-current are realized for the power devices of converter's lag leg.

Abstract:A Zero-Voltage-Switching (ZVS) PWM scheme for full-bridge inverter with active-clamping technique is proposed. The ZVS condition is analyzed and the ZVS PWM scheme is designed to realize zero voltage switching for both main switches and auxiliary switch in a large power range. The ZVS PWM scheme also adjusts the energy stored in resonant inductor with variation of load to reduce the circulating loss in light load range. The switching frequency is increased and the filter inductor is significantly reduced. The experiment on a 3kW prototype shows the realization of ZVS and high efficiency.

Abstract:A soft-switched full-bridge (FB) converter that features zero-voltage-switching (ZVS) of the bridge switches over a wide output-load range is introduced. The proposed converter achieves ZVS with substantially reduced duty-cycle loss and circulating current. The control of the proposed converter can be implemented either with the phase-shift or pulsewidth modulated (PWM) technique. The performance of the proposed topology was verified on a 2-kW (48-V/40-A) experimental PWM FB converter prototype operating at 120 kHz from a 380-V dc input.

Half Bridge Zero Current Transition Resonant Converter

Abstract:This paper presents a half bridge zero current transition resonant converter (HBZCTRC) circuit topology. The zero current turn off of the main insulated gate bipolar transistor (IGBT) switch of the converter can be realized by adding an active auxiliary resonant network on the switching arm. The range of zero current turn off is very wide and is not affected by the load. The converter's operating principle and the effects of the auxiliary resonant network parameters are analyzed in detail. The main current and voltage waveforms are given with the equivalent circuits at different time intervals in a half switching cycle. An IGBT arc welding prototype with maximum output current 160 A is developed using the zero current transition resonant converter. Experimental results show that the converter has zero current turn off over wide load voltage and current ranges.

Abstract:This paper presents the modeling and design of a novel ZVZC FB-PWM converter. Compared to the traditional topology which employs a saturated inductor to block, the reverse current in order to achieve ZCS for the lagging leg, a novel one using two diodes in series with the lagging leg is adopted. Both the duty ratio loss is reduced and the efficiency is improved, which further reliefs the problem of thermal handling caused by the saturated inductor. What's more, better stability and dynamic behavior are acquired. A complete small-signal model for the novel ZVZC FB-PWM converter is developed. Validation of design of equation and model prediction is accomplished through numerical solutions of steady-state nonlinear equations and experimental results of a 15 kW module converter operating at 20 kHz.

Abstract:Although SiC MOSFET has significant improvements on switching performance compared with traditional Si power devices, the dynamic loss of the converter rises with the increase of the switching frequency of the converter. To further improve the efficiency of SiC inverter and power density, Zero-Voltage-Switching (ZVS) is investigated. A SiC full-bridge inverter with ZVS-switching is presented. The efficiency of SiC MOSFET ZVS full-bridge inverter is compared with that of hard switching SiC inverter at different switching frequency. Finally it is shown that the ZVS-Switching inverter is preferred in high switching frequency.

Abstract:Single-phase zero-voltage-switching (ZVS) inverter with wide bandgap devices has higher efficiency and power density. However, the dc-side capacitor of the inverter will suffer double line frequency ripple and reduces the lifetime of the dc bus capacitor. Active power decoupling (APD) is an effective method to replace the short lifetime electrolytic capacitor with a smaller film capacitor. In order to help achieving the ZVS condition for ZVS inverter and the additional APD circuit, this article presents a ZVS topology for single-phase full-bridge inverter with APD circuit by adding an auxiliary branch between the dc source and the bridge legs. The auxiliary branch is composed of a clamping capacitor, an auxiliary switch, and a resonant inductor. A ZVS pulsewidth modulation scheme is proposed for a single-phase inverter with APD. The gate drive pulses are designed to realize the ZVS turn-on for the main switches of both APD circuit and single-phase full-bridge inverter. Circuit operation stages are analyzed and ZVS conditions are given. Finally, the proposed ZVS inverter with APD circuit is verified on a 1.5-kW inverter prototype.
