Abstract:The notion of legitimation was adopted from Max Weber who defined it as the basic form of authority and power. The author uses the notion of legitimation as a tool of undertaking exploration into the discourses of cultural theories and debates on them. Focusing on the current debates on cultural legitimation, the article examines the different discourses on modern Chinese culture: “aphasia” in modern Chinese literary theory; “Westernization” in modern Chinese poetry. The author argues that the two discourses question the legitimation of modern Chinese culture by expressing an anxiety of cultural identity in the process of the great transformation from traditional to modern culture. By drawing on the relations between re-traditionalization and ontological security, the article presents the complicated relation between traditional and contemporary construction of Chinese cultural identity. In conclusion, the author critically reflects on the misunderstanding of cultural identity and makes the claim that identity on the basis of multi-cultural values is always open for endless alteration.

Abstract:Taiwan’s autonomy and status in the People’s Republic of China (PRC) have always been contentious. The visits of numerous Western officials and Taiwan’s steadfast assertion of its national identity have introduced uncertainties in the security of the Indo-Pacific region. Exploring the development of Taiwan’s self-awareness regarding its national identity is crucial for understanding how Taiwan navigates its position in the PRC, paving the way for a practical approach for the mainland to improve cross-strait relations. With a deep analysis of factors contributing to deteriorating Taiwan’s identity recognition, the article will continue to examine Taiwan’s history from 1895 to 2000 and the evolution of its national identity. It concludes that historical factors significantly shape Taiwan’s identity and considers how the mainland can enhance its relationship with Taiwan’s utilizing mechanisms. To promote a Chinese identity in Taiwan, the article suggests strategies such as fostering economic cooperation under the One-China principle, facilitating youth education exchanges, and acknowledging cultural and national identity.

Abstract:In the context of globalization, different national cultures compete, reject, collide and merge in the process of communication, but these will ultimately be reflected on the issue of cultural identity. With the development and implementation of the ＂going out＂ strategy of Chinese culture, foreign translation of traditional Chinese culture has become increasingly important and urgent. From the perspective of self-cultural identity and cultural identity, this article quotes examples of ancient, modern and modern traditional cultural translation, and uses the academic ideological results of related disciplines as the inheritance and development of previous studies, and uses this as a guide. It also investigates and researches the bidirectional development of cultural identity in the context of traditional cultural translation. Abstract:Amidst the contemporary diasporic landscape in Sinophone literature, this research critically examines the nexus of language, culture, and identity. The study aims to analyze literary pieces composed in Sinophone languages across diverse diasporic communities and uncover the impact of language and cultural elements on the articulation and comprehension of diasporic identity. This paper used the following. comparative and typological research, an in-depth analysis of three Sinophonic texts, and contextual analysis. The subject of the study was three texts: The Joy Luck Club (Amy Tan), Balzac and the Little Chinese Seamstress (Dai Sijie), and The Woman Warrior (Maxine Hong Kingston). The results showed that In The Joy Luck Club, language and cultural facets unveil the characters' dual identity struggles due to living abroad, exemplified through code-switching's psychological tension. Balzac and the Little Chinese Seamstress utilizes language and cultural details to underscore the significance of preserving heritage within the diaspora, with literary allusions amplifying this endeavor. In The Woman Warrior, language and cultural elements reflect the heroine's inner conflict as she navigates her dual cultural allegiance. This scholarly revelation deepens comprehension of how these aspects influence identity formation in the diaspora. These findings broaden the understanding of Sinophone diasporic literature, spotlighting shared trends in identity portrayal through language and culture. The research has theoretical value for literary, cultural, and anthropological studies and practical significance, potentially informing educational initiatives on diasporic literature and cultural diversity. This study's outcomes hold relevance for students, researchers, and cultural scholars exploring the role of language and culture in diasporic identity expression.

Abstract:Cultural identity is a multidimensional concept that has fascinated scholars, researchers, and practitioners in (intercultural) communication and related disciplines over time. The year 2020 has witnessed renewed interests in and debates about a multiplicity of cultural identities, which demonstrate the concept’s relevance in everyday interactions across local and global contexts. For instance, both the rise of conservatism across the globe (including white nationalism in the United States during the Trump administration) and the push for greater equity and inclusion for all (e.g., Black Lives Matter movement, sexual misconduct policies, and gender-neutral bathrooms in public spaces) have garnered and regenerated needs to better understand cultural identity as a complex and contested communication construct. Analytically, cultural identity encompasses a wide range of socially constructed categories that influence how a person knows and experiences his/her/their social world (e.g., race, ethnicity, gender, nationality, socioeconomic status, ability, sexuality, religion, and more). As a social construct, cultural identity deals with important questions about conceptions, understandings, and lived experiences regarding the self in relation to others across time, space, and context. In particular, cultural identity—as opposed to identity—focuses on questions regarding membership in, acceptance into, (dis)identification with, and/or negotiation of (un)belongingness to various groups vis-à-vis communication. Questions about “difference” in a myriad of ways are at the heart of inquiries about cultural identity. That is, cultural identity is better understood as “cultural identities” as always already plural, intersecting, and evolving along various power lines that relate to histories, politics, and social forces. Communication scholars have studied the concept of cultural identity from different perspectives and approaches (e.g., functionalist, interpretive, and critical lenses). In this article, influential works are identified and reviewed in related fields such as psychology, sociology, and cultural studies that have shaped the study of cultural identity in (intercultural) communication in US academia. Then, core texts and articles in communication are considered that represent key issues, core debates, and central arguments about cultural identities, which are followed by textbooks and readers, a review of journals, and prominent theories of cultural identity by intercultural communication scholars in the United States. The article ends with major areas of study.
Perception of Young Generation toward Taiwanese Identity: A Study on Students of National Chung Hsing University

Abstract:In this era of globalization, the world economy has seen unprecedented growth. Changing identity has particularly stimulated this growth in countries like Taiwan. The purpose of this study is to find out the perception of young generation towards Taiwanese Identity. This study employs both qualitative and quantitative approach following an in-depth interview of 80 experts and survey method on 300 students of National Chung Hsing University. The result comes out from the study that Taiwanese have their own common, unique and distinct identity which is politically and legally distinct from Chinese identity. It has been evolved and propagated by social mediums and has been popularized by Intellectual elites, media, and state institutions. Socially as well as culturally, people of Taiwan seek to maintain their own distinct and unique identity and resist Chinese influence in that sphere. In order to maintain and develop common, unique and distinct Taiwanese identity, harmony must be ensured between social groups. People of Taiwan have shown remarkable adaption ability under dz~jjcult conditions. The development of economy has got great boost from rise of meritocratic culture. China still has strong cultural influence on Taiwan. Howevel; Taiwan is fast treading on the path of developing its own unique blend of culture.

Abstract:This article aims to elaborate on the current trends and features of Taiwan history research and to provide a direction for Korean academic to understand Taiwanese society and history. In the main, this article will attempt to analyse the current trends and characteristics of Taiwanese history research, with a particular focus on the changes since the DPP's return to power and their impact. In the 2016, Taiwanese presidential election, the DPP won power, and Tsai Ing-wen was re-elected in the 2020 presidential election. There is an ongoing debate on how these political changes affect the study of Taiwanese history, and how Taiwan's identity and inherent capabilities have been historically emphasised in the context of de-Chinaisation. In addition, the overall trend in Taiwanese history research has been to move away from a focus on colonialism and continental nationalism in the past, and to emphasise the need for Taiwanese to write their own history and to be seen as the agents of Taiwan's history. This shows that the study of Taiwanese history is endeavouring to understand historical agency from different perspectives. The study of population movements and migration to Taiwan since prehistoric times is also being conducted from a variety of perspectives. Recent research trends have been characterised by an exploration of the background and characteristics of Taiwan's population movements in various areas, including geographical and economic causes, as well as political fluctuations, changes in political structures, and changes in identity. Since 20 century, the study of Taiwan history has reflected a diversity of values and emphasised the recognition that Taiwan is a pluralistic society. In particular, efforts have been made to identify the impact of social phenomena such as migration, economic change, and natural disasters on Taiwanese history, as well as political change and the expansion of power. In addition, recent studies of Taiwanese history have sought to demonstrate that ethnicity, religion, and community are indicators of current social conflicts. These themes are emerging as important aspects of Taiwanese history, which is an indication of the growing interest in studying how they operate as axes of change and conflict within Taiwanese society.

Abstract:Zhao Liu TAIWANESE ACCOUNTS OF THE MEANING OF THEIR NATIONAL IDENTITY: A QUALITATIVE STUDY The national identity of Taiwanese people has been a topic under public debate and academic inspection since Taiwan’s democratization in the 1980s and the 1990s. In this study, I interviewed fifteen Taiwanese students studying in the United States and talked with them about their national identity. Interviews with the fifteen students reveal that an independent Taiwanese identity has taken shape, while a Chinese cultural identity still remains part of the Taiwanese identity. It was also discovered that although a Taiwanese national identity has formed, a Taiwanese ethnicity has not yet taken a complete form. Discussions with the Taiwanese students also indicate that studying in the multi-cultural United States renders them more aware of their Taiwanese national identity, as well as their Chinese cultural identity. Abstract:Chinese literary theory has long been placed in a marginal position in the world and has lost its deserved identity in the process of internationalization. One of the advantages of Western literary theory is its geographical nature. Therefore,geographical civilization can be taken as a proper perspective to look at East Asian literary theory. Historically,the geographical civilization in East Asia was in complete harmony. But,contemporary East Asian geographical civilization has no effective interaction,especially in terms of literary theory. In the interactive process of Eastern and Western literary theories,the continuous improvement of geographical literary theory will further promote the construction of Eastern literary theory,the equal dialogue between Eastern and Western literary theories,and the development of the world literary theory.

Abstract:At present, almost every scholar of the humanities and social sciences has noticed the fact that talking a lot about globalization has become an academic and intellectual fashion. Some do welcome the advent of globalization viewing it as a good opportunity to develop their career in a broader global context. Others are very afraid of this ghost, fearful that it might well engulf their research fields. It is true that for scholars and intellectuals from the Orient and Third World countries, what they are most anxious about is the (re)location of their culture in such an age of globalization, when cultures from different countries or nations are more and more homogenized and the identity of weak cultures more and more obscured. In the circles of Cultural Studies, this phenomenon, associated with the crisis of national identity and (re) construction of cultural identity, has also attracted the attention of both comparatists and cultural studies scholars. The present essay will first of all deal with the issue of globalization from a cultural and intellectual perspective: it will offer a restrospection on the state of the art of the study of globalization worldwide, and its positive and negative effect on current Chinese cultural and intellectual life as well as academic study. I should also point out that since cultural globalization, as a direct consequence of economic globalization, is beyond anyone's resistance, seeking a sort of Chinese national and cultural identity acquired vital significance to scholars of both comparative literature and cultural studies. To my mind, seeking such a Chinese national and cultural identity also has much to do with the construction or reconstruction of Chinese critical discourse, for in this respect globalization has certainly provided us with a rare opportunity to develop our national culture and literature.

Abstract:Literary aethetics still remains a n ew discipline to be further developed.There have been many disputes on its cross -disc iplinary nature,the defined positi on of its knowledge system,its research methodologies and its disc iplinary prospects.In its review of the history of China's literary aethetics studies,this paper exami nes the logical starting point of lit erary aethetics and its value ends.In its analysis,it draws from latest developments in relevant disciplin es and new scientific studies.It also associates aethetic appreciation with the generation of human aeth etic conception.The author argues that the academic positionin g of literary aethetics does not lack theoretical systems.Its defi-ciencies lie in the fact that few stud ies have been made to examine problem s in contemporary art and literature from perspectives of literary aethetics.In the academic dis course of the new century,lit-erary aethetics should focus on the s tudy of both theoretical and practic al topics which are of realistic significance.

Abstract:Legitimization is a key notion in the sociological theories of Max Weber, who initiated the concept in the discourses of cultural theories and the analyses of their debates, thus helpful in making clear the cultural significance of the discourses and the debates. Some recent discourses of Chinese modern literary theories and of Chinese modern poetry are worthy of our examination. Both Aphasia in Chinese modern literary theory and Westernization of Chinese modern poetry are virtually challenges to the legitimacy of Chinese modern culture and literature, for they seem to be greatly westernized and deviate from their tradition. These discourses are expressions of an anxiety in cultural identity, which is inevitable in a thorough transformation from traditional culture to modern one. By means of analyzing the relations between re-traditionalization and ontological security, the author tries to make clear a complicated relation between back-to-tradition and contemporary construction of Chinese cultural identity, critically reflects on the misunderstanding of cultural identity and claims that identity on the basis of multi-cultural values is always open to changes.

Abstract:The strong interest in literature in Chinese academic tradition has sustained even a contemporary development of such studies as emendation of text,history of literature,history of book publishing,and history of book collecting.And yet,unfortunately,little attention has been directed to the cultural and social functions of literature at large.The overseas sinologists’works on Chinese social history of books prove to be weak due to their indiscriminate transplant of western ideas and methodology.Different from the western one,the critical issue concerning the social and cultural functions of books in China is absolutely no more than the relation of a long history of book publishing and collecting to its influence on the social development and cultural heritage in ancient China.Only with"literature in culture"in mind can we attain a more profound understanding of Chinese ancient literature.

Abstract:The discussion on the aestheticization of daily life is now pushing the rethinking of literary theory to deepening. Firstly, the China contemporary crisis of literary theory is not due to the pervasion of aesthetic judgment into daily life, but the alienation from the new reality, new ideological trend md new characteristic of present literature development of China and foreign countries, and the studies, on new literary form and system of masses media literature, and present literature online in at this information age are not enough. Second, culture study has some references to literary theory, but 'turning to culture study' is not a good idea for solving the crisis of literary theory. In adopting the culture study methods literary theory can not throw over the dimension of aesthetic judgment which is the most basic element for literature.
