Abstract:Based on Bishop′s effective stress formula,one-phase flow consolidation theory,and impedance function recursive method,considering the effect of underground water level,the dynamic response of a pile embedded in two-layer soil and subjected to a vertical load is theoretically investigated.The pile is assumed to be vertical and can be dealt with one-dimensional elastic theory.Because of the existence of the underground water,the soil is divided into two layers.The soil above the underground water level is regarded as unsaturated soil and that below the underground water level is regarded as saturated soil.By using Laplace transform,the analytical solutions for the complex stiffness and admittance function at the pile top are derived in frequency domain.Then,a quasi-analytical solution for the velocity response of the pile subjected to a semi-sine wave exciting force is derived by using Fourier inverse transform.Through numerical calculation,the influences of the major parameters on the response of the pile are analyzed.It is shown that the depth of the underground water level and the saturation degree of the unsaturated soil have certain influences on the admittance and complex stiffness at the pile top,but have negligible influences on the velocity response in time domain at the pile top.Hence,the influence of the underground water level can be negligible in pile integrity test and estimation.

Abstract:In order to study pile-soil interaction of composite foundation with rigid-flexible piles,static load test of composite foundation with one cast-inplace pile and four cement mixing piles under stripe foundation is carried out in Wenzhou area.On the basis of monitoring data,this paper analyses load bearing capacity and deformation under the application of load.The Q-s curve variation of composite foundation is slow.Soil pressure distribution under stripe foundation shows the shape of being large in middle part and small at the edge.The soil stress concentration occurs at the plane of pile tip.There are negative friction force at rigid pile top and flexible pile top.Furthermore,the degree of bearing capacity display on rigid pile is 0.97,while that on flexible pile is 0.73 and that on soil is 0.99.

Abstract:As a special geological phenomenon, the character of collapsible loess foundation is collapsible when penetrated by water. This character leads to the soil losing load bearing capacity largely and may lead to foundation failure. Pile is a popular foundation used in collapsible loess. The squeezed branch and plate pile is a new type of pile developed in recent years and has not be used in a project before. In this paper three squeezed branch and plate piles are tested in collapsible loess after immersion processing. The results may be used for reference in similar construction project, and to provide theoretical references for designing of the squeezed branch and plate piles in engineering practice.

Abstract:The load transfer mechanism and deformation characteristics of cast-in-place piles in composite foundation with rigid-flexible piles are different from that in free state. Working property of pile is complex due to interaction between rigid pile, flexible pile and soil. Static load tests of the same pile under different situation are carried out in Wenzhou. On the basis of monitoring data in the process of static load test, settlement characteristics, load transfer mechanism and compression of pile shaft are analyzed; the conclusions can benefit to engineering design and construction.

Abstract:A composite foundation that incorporates rigid and flexible piles is a new type of composite foundation. In order to investigate the pile-soil interaction of this composite foundation, a static load test of the composite foundation, consisting of one rigid pile and four flexible piles supporting a stripe foundation, was done in Wenzhou, China. The load transfer behavior was observed by embedding earth pressure cells, strain meters and stress meters beneath the bearing plate at different locations. Variation and rules of load sharing among the rigid pile, flexible piles and soil, as well as, stress distribution, were analyzed in the process of load application. The experimental results clearly indicated that placing a cushion beneath the bearing plate reduced stress concentration on the top of rigid pile and made the soil and flexible pile share load in the initial load stage, thus improved the performance of the composite foundation system. The load transfer mechanism of rigid pile and flexible pile in a composite foundation system is different from a normal pile system or a normal soil cement mix pile system. Copyright ASCE 2006.

Abstract:Recent studies and in-situ tests have found that the ground improvement under embankment is largely different from the building foundation due to embankment' smaller rigidity.The side friction of pile,the axial stress within piles and the depth of pile end penetrating into the embankment and soil were studied numerically under different cushion moduli,pile moduli,soil moduli,replacement ratio and pile length.The author point out that the penetration depth of pile end under embankment disagree with that mentioned in the Technical Code of Pile Foundations due to different causes of pile end penetration.
In-situ test of bearing capacity behavior of composite foundation with rigid-flexible piles

Abstract:In-situ tests were carried out in Wenzhou in order to study the stress distribution of composite foundation with rigid-flexible piles under long-term load. Results show that the stress of composite foundation is related with the superstructure rigidity. When the superstructure floor is low, loads are undertaken mostly by soil; when the superstructure floor is high, the stress concentration happens on the top of rigid pile and flexible pile. The pile stress variation rule with floor increment is different at different spots and cushion can alleviate the stress difference. The load sharing ratio of rigid pile in the composite foundation without cushion is larger than that in the composite foundation with cushion.

Abstract:The quality of vibro-driven cast-in-place pile got worse in the course of construction in Wenzhou.Comparing with different plans of foundation reinforcement,the rigid-flexible piles composite foundation is applied.Effective measures are taken to solve the problem of pile-soil displacement incoordination due to different elastic modulus of rigid pile,flexible pile and soil.Monitoring data shows that the load capacity and settlement have met the demands.
Model Tests on Elevated Piles Subjected to Lateral Static and Impact Loading

Abstract:A series of model tests at 1g are carried out to study behaviors of elevated piles subjected to both lateral static and impact loading.The horizontal static and impact loading,deflection,horizontal dynamic response,static and dynamic bending moments of the pile shaft as well as the static and dynamic soil pressures on the pile shaft are measured.It is found that the characteristics of static soil reaction to the pile shaft deduced from the bending moment of the pile shaft consistent with those of the measured static soil pressure on the pile shaft.For the pile subjected to the lateral impact loading,the dynamic soil reaction to the pile shaft is heavily related to the time-history of impact loading.Associated with the analysis by Winkler linear models as well as the static and dynamic p–y curve models,the characteristics of pile-soil static and dynamic interaction and its effects on bending moment and deflection of the pile shaft are investigated.The numerical results of the above models are compared with the test results,based on which the complex stiffness dynamic p–y curve model is recommended for the analysis of elevated piles subjected to the lateral impact loading.Its analytic results are in good agreement with the test results of the dynamic responses and bending moment of the pile shaft,and the model is used for the anti-collision analysis of an in-situ elevated pile.

Abstract:Cast-in-place tubular pile technology is introduced. Based on the in-situ test data, the engineering property of single pile and composite foundation are specially analyzed. It is found that the cast-in-place tubular pile gives prominence to its vertical bearing capacity. At the same time, the pile can have large diameter which induced thin-shell effect that enable the pile with high horizontal resistance. Finally, the tubular composite pile foundation test indicates that it not only well meet engineering requirement in settlement and bearing capacity, but also has the advantages of good quality, low cost etc..
Model Test Study of Bearing Behavior of Small Prefabricated Piles in Soft Soil Area

Abstract:To study the horizontal and vertical bearing behavior of small prefabricated single piles and pile groups under different loads,an indoor test program for the pile models,including the horizontal static,the uplift static and the compression load test,is designed. The bearing behaviors of small prefabricated piles in soft soil area are simulated by the tests with the principle of similarity. The results show that for the 2 by 2 pile group,the horizontal,uplift and compression efficiency coefficient are 0.75,0.66 and 1.12 respectively,and for the 3 by 3 pile group,the coefficients are 0.52,0.62 and 1.06 respectively. The measured group effect coefficients are in agreement with,but slightly larger than the theoretical values. These findings indicate that the comprehensive coefficient method of pile group effect coefficient formula is applicable but relatively conservative. The results provide a reference to the engineering design for small prefabricated piles in soft soil area.
Field Tests of Offshore Driven Piles Subjected to Lateral Monotonic and Cyclic Loads in Soft Clay

Abstract:The large-diameter driven pile is one of the most common types of foundations used for offshore structures. Field tests of two offshore driven piles, each with a diameter of 2.2m, subjected to lateral monotonic and cyclic loads in soft clay, were carried out at the Guishan Offshore Wind Farms in the Guangdong Province of China. Further analysis of the test results showed that the initial stiffness and ultimate soil reaction per unit length of the derived p-y curves of the driven piles were obviously larger than those of the American Petroleum Institute (API) p-y curves for the investigated soft clay soil. This finding could be a result of reconsolidation of soil around the pile after it was driven. The computed modified hyperbolic tangent p-y curves were in good agreement with the test results. For one-way cyclic loading tests, a cyclic degradation factor, t, was defined and calculated on the basis of the derived cyclic p-y curves, which were approximately linear to the cyclic soil reaction ratio and decreased as the soil depth increased. The factor t can be used to analyze the lateral cyclic responses of offshore driven piles, and the experimental results can provide valuable reference for analyses of lateral monotonic and cyclic pile-soil interactions in soft clay. Abstract:This paper introduces a successful application of the composite foundation with low-strength-concrete pile and cement-mixed pile in Ouhai road of Wenzhou to alleviate bridge-head jump.Through pressure metre under embankment,the magnitude of pile-soil stress ratio and its variation with the time are measured,and the variation of pile-soil load share ratio with time is analyzed.Furthermore,the measured results in site show that the measured pilesoil stress ratio under flexible foundation is much less than that under rigid foundation.The conclusion can provide valuable preference for the design of the composite ground under embankment.

Abstract:In this study, we propose a drainage pipe pile under vacuum consolidation to integrate foundation treatment and pile foundation engineering in soft soil areas. To study its bearing capacity characteristics and foundation treatment performance, single pile static load tests, vane shear tests, and water content tests were carried out for ordinary piles, perforated piles, and drainage pipe piles under conditions of static and vacuum consolidation. Based on the results, the concept of strong and weak reinforcement areas was proposed and used for bearing capacity prediction. The results showed that the drainage pipe pile did not become silted under vacuum consolidation. The single pile bearing capacity was much higher than that of an ordinary pile, and the pile side friction was exerted mainly in the middle and lower parts. Good results were achieved using the shear strength at the junction of the strong and weak reinforcement areas to estimate the ultimate bearing capacity of a single pile. This study provided important insights into the design and construction of drainage pipe piles in a soft soil foundation.

Abstract:In this paper, design ideas of the rigid-flexible and long-short pile composite foundation on the deep soft soil are presented. Based on the in-site loading test of an important project in City of Wenzhou, the major engineering characteristics of this type of composite foundation are studied. The stress ratio, the load ratio of pile-soil, stresses of soil and the pore water pressure in the process of construction are analyzed carefully. Consistent regularities of the composite foundation are shown during processes of loading test and construction. The results of tests indicate that pore water pressure dissipates rapidly, and that two kinds of piles can interact with soil quite well. It will be provided as references for future design and research.

Abstract:The engineering characteristics of composite foundation with rigid-flexible and long-short piles are studied. By using the finite element method, the effects of cushion modulus, cushion thickness, short pile modulus, and long pile length on the total settlement of composite foundation, the stress ratio of long-short pile, and the axial stress of long-short pile are discussed respectively. The results show that the engineering characteristics of composite foundation can become more reasonable by optimizing material parameters; and long pile can effectively reduce settlement of composite foundation. Based on the in-situ measurement of pressures in soil and piles of a practical engineering in Wenzhou City, stress ratio of pile to soil and pressures in the process of construction are analyzed. Some conclusions are provided as references for future design and application of this kind of composite foundation.

Abstract:In order to explore bearing characteristics of a new-type static drill rooted nodular pile foundation (SDRN), which is composed of PHC pile, bamboo joint pile, and cement soils, field tests of three piles were carried out by embedding internal rebar stress gauges to collect test data. The test results show that the SDRN piles were under elastic state and the load-settlement curves changed slowly before reaching the ultimate capacity. As pile head loads increased, the pile shaft frictions developed progressively, and axial forces gradually reduced along pile depths. Taking into account the interaction between the pile, the cement soils, and surrounding soils, a simplified method for calculating settlements and bearing capacity of SDRN piles was proposed. With corresponding parameters, the computing results obtained by the proposed method were compared with the field experimental data, which indicates acceptable agreements; thus, it is concluded that the applicability and predictive capability of the proposed method were verified.
