Abstract:We investigate the scattering of 2D cylindrical invisibility cloaks with simplified constitutive parameters with the assistance of scattering coefficients. We show that the scattering of the cloaks originates not only from the boundary conditions but also from the spatial variation of the component of permittivity/permeability. According to our formulation, we propose some restrictions to the invisibility cloak in order to minimize its scattering after the simplification has taken place. With our theoretical analysis, it is possible to design a simplified cloak using some peculiar composites such as photonic crystals which mimic an effective refractive index landscape rather than offering effective constitutives, meanwhile cancelling the scattering from the inner and outer boundaries.

Abstract:Two-dimensional (2D) elliptically cylindrical invisible cloaks with multiple regions are designed based on the transformation optics and the complementary media theory. Multiple invisible cloak regions can be obtained by properly using the compressed or folded transformation in each space layer. The constitutive parameter tensor expressions for each region have been obtained. The results of full wave simulations by using finite element software confirm the validity of the constitutive parameter tensor expressions. In addition, the parameters are relatively easier to realize.

Abstract:The influence of a geometrical perturbation (5 at the inner boundaries of both cylindrical and spherical invisibility cloaks on invisibility performance is presented. The analytic solutions for such influence in the case of the general coordinate transformation are given. We show that the cylindrical cloak is more sensitive than a spherical cloak to such a perturbation. The difference results from the different asymptotic properties of eigen-functions for the cylindrical and spherical wave equations. In particular, the zeroth-order scattering coefficient for a cylindrical cloak determined by -1/ln(delta) converges to zero very slowly. The noticeable scattering induced by the slow convergence speed can be decreased by choosing appropriate coordinate transformation functions. More interestingly, the slow convergence can be overcome dramatically by putting a PEC (PMC) layer at the interior boundary of the cloak shell for TM (TE) wave. (C) 2008 Optical Society of America.

Abstract:The invisibility of cylindrical cloaks produced by arbitrary radially coordinate transformations is confirmed. The influence of a tiny geometrical perturbation at the inner boundary of the cloak is investigated. It is shown that a tiny perturbation would induce a noticeable field scattering, due to the slow convergence of the zeroth order scattering coefficients. However, by choosing appropriate coordinate transformation functions, the noticeable scattering can be reduced. More interestingly, the slow convergence can be overcome drastically by putting a PEC (PMC) layer at the interior boundary of the cloak shell for TM (TE) mode.

Abstract:The method of designing electromagnetic invisible cloaks is usually based on the form-invariance of Maxwell’s equations in coordinate transformation.The exterior boundary of a cylindrical invisible cloak is unchanged and the interior boundary is extended from that of a point to that of a cylindrical region in coordination transformation.This transformation process makes perfect cloaks,but it causes singularity in the constitutive material parameters of cloaks.This singularity makes the cloaks impossible to realize in practice.In order to remove this singularity,this paper sets a small cylindrical region replacing a point in the space transformation.The cylindrical region is so small that it does not affect the invisibility effects,but it can remove the singularity for material parameters.Full wave simulations based on the finite element method were used to verify the designed cloaks.

Abstract:Based on transformation optics theory, an elliptical scattering-shifting cloak is designed and the constitutive parameter tensor expressions are derived. Then full-wave simulations to mimic the ellptical dielectric and conductor cylinder are obtained by using finite-element software. The results of full-wave simulations validate the constitutive parameter tensors we derived and verify that the scattering-shifting cloak can imitate any object including dielectric and conductor: these results provide a new theoretical approach to design cloaks.

Abstract:In this paper, we derive a theory for the modeling of 3-D cylindrical cloak based on 2-D finite-difference time-domain method, which is less time consuming and memory saving. By using the method, we develop the concept of invisibility angle and investigate the invisibility performance of the 3-D cylindrical cloak with 2-D constitutive parameters under off-plane incident waves. The bistatic radar cross sections as well as the scattered fields are calculated to evaluate the scatterings, from which the invisibility performance is observed to get worse with the increase in the incident angle, while the defined invisibility angle diminishes with the decrease in the cloak thickness and wavelength. The deterioration of the invisibility performance is mainly caused by the scatterings of TM wave defined in the study. The present results point out a possible way to evaluate the 2-D cloak on 3-D applications.

Abstract:Electromagnetic external cloak is an important device, which can make an object outside its domain invisible, meanwhile the object can exchange information with the outer region. Based on line-transformation and the concept of complementary medium, an elliptical cylindrical external cloak with only axial parameter changed is designed in this paper. The expressions of material parameters are derived, and then the performance of the elliptical cylindrical external cloak is simulated using the full wave simulation software. The results obtained confirm the correctness of constitutive parameters tensor. In addition, the effects of loss on performation of external cloak are investigated. Finally, the distribution of constitutive tensors is also investigated. This work provide a feasible way to fabricate matematerial-assisted elliptical cylindcial external cloak.

Abstract:The coordinate transformation theory is used to design invisible cloaks including the electromagnetic wave and the acoustic wave ones. By solving Laplace's equation that describes how the coordinates transform, three-dimensional (3-D) electromagnetic (EM) invisible cloaks with irregular boundary shapes can be designed provided the boundary conditions of the cloaks can be determined by the corresponding transformation. This design process is efficiency to design complicated and practical structures. Full wave simulations based on finite element method verified the designed 3-D EM invisible cloaks. The constitutive material parameters of the EM invisible cloaks can be calculated according to the coordinate transformation theory.

Abstract:A cylindrical wave expansion method is developed to obtain the scattering field for an ideal two-dimensional cylindrical invisibility cloak. A near-ideal model of the invisibility cloak is set up to solve the boundary problem at the inner boundary of the cloak shell. We confirm that a cloak with the ideal material parameters is a perfect invisibility cloak by systematically studying the change of the scattering coefficients from the near-ideal case to the ideal one. However, due to the slow convergence of the zero$^{th}$ order scattering coefficients, a tiny perturbation on the cloak would induce a noticeable field scattering and penetration.

Abstract:The cylindrical cloak created with nonlinear transformation is studied based on the analytical scattering theory. The equivalent surface displacement current at the inner boundary of an ideal cloak is shown to be independent of the transformation function. For the nonideal cloak with perturbation at the inner boundary, we show that the performance of the cloak with low loss can be greatly improved by using certain nonlinear transformations.

Abstract:By making a comparison between the acoustic equations and the 2-dimensional（2D） Maxwell equations,we obtain the material parameter equations（MPE） for acoustic elliptical cylindrical cloaks.Both the theoretical results and the numerical results indicate that an elliptical cylindrical cloak can realize perfect acoustic invisibility when the spatial distributions of mass density and bulk modulus are exactly configured according to the proposed equations.The present work is the meaningful exploration of designing acoustic cloaks that are neither sphere nor circular cylinder in shape,and opens up possibilities for making complex and multiplex acoustic cloaks with simple models such as spheres,circular or elliptic cylinders.

Abstract:By means of area-transformation method, the material parameters of the invisible cloaks in elliptic-cylindrical and spherical coordinates were obtained. The material parameters of the invisible cloaks are nonsingular and the cloaks can operate in a wide bandwidth due to the area-transformation rather than the point-transformation. The invisible properties of the cloaks are nearly perfect when the original area is small enough compared with its counterpart in the transformed space. Full wave simulations based on finite element method verified the designed cloaks.

Abstract:Thermal cloak has potential applications in thermal protection and sensing. Based on the theories of spatial transformation and effective medium, layered structure of elliptic cylindrical thermal cloak was designed. According to theoretical analysis and numerical simulation, the layered structure has typical characteristics of perfect thermal cloak. The external temperature field remains unchanged, while the internal temperature gradient decreases obviously. Meanwhile, the cloaking effect is stable in any direction. The cloaking effect can be improved by increasing the number of discretization layers or reducing the cloak thickness. The elliptic cylindrical cloak can be considered as cylindrical cloak when the focal distance is close to zero. This study has provided an effective way for realizing thermal cloak with more complex shapes.

Abstract:In this paper, the interaction between the inhomogeneous and anisotropic cloak covered infinitely long PEC circular cylinder and the parallel electric-line-source is investigated in detail. First, the permittivity and permeability tensors of the cloak are defined according to Pendry's model, then the wave equation in the metamaterial cloak is derived; second, the far/near properties of the model are investigated, and using the boundary conditions the electromagnetic fields of the whole region are calculated analytically; finally, based on the analytical expressions, the electric fields of the whole region are demonstrated through numerical results which show the effects of invisibility. Finally, the effects of loss on the performance of the invisible cloak are investigated.

Abstract:By using the coordinate transformation method, we have deduced the material parameter equation for rotating elliptical spherical cloaks and carried out simulation as well. The results indicate that the rotating elliptical spherical cloaking shell, which is made of meta-materials whose permittivity and permeability are governed by the equation deduced in this paper, can achieve perfect invisibility by excluding electromagnetic fields from the internal region without disturbing any external field.

Abstract:The approximate cloaking is investigated for time-harmonic Maxwell's equations via the approach of transformation optics. The problem is reduced to certain boundary effect estimates due to an inhomogeneous electromagnetic inclusion with an asymptotically small support but an arbitrary content enclosed by a thin high-conducting layer. Sharp estimates are established in terms of the asymptotic parameter, which are independent of the material tensors of the small electromagnetic inclusion. The result implies that the "blow-up-a-small-region" construction via the transformation optics approach yields a near-cloak for the electromagnetic waves. A novelty lies in the fact that the geometry of the cloaking construction of this work can be very general. Moreover, by incorporating the conducting layer developed in the present paper right between the cloaked region and the cloaking region, arbitrary electromagnetic contents can be nearly cloaked. Our mathematical technique extends the general one developed in [H. Y. Liu and H. Sun, J. Math. Pures Appl., 99 (2013), pp. 17-42] for nearly cloaking scalar optics. In order to investigate the approximate electromagnetic cloaking for general geometries with arbitrary cloaked contents in the present study, new techniques and analysis tools are developed for this more challenging vector optics case.
