Abstract:The conventional implementation of Katsevich's inversion formula involves the computation of PI segment. This is done by solving a nonlinear equation with a numerical algorithm such as Newton's method. In this study, we develop an implementation of Katsevich's inversion formula without computing PI segment. Our implementation involves a new concept, cone beam cover, which is closely related to PI segment and Tam-Danielsson window. Unlike the implementation based on PI segment, the algorithm complexity of our implementation can be estimated with several important imaging parameters. This result may be instructive for practical applications to choose scanning parameters and reduce the algorithm complexity. The proposed implementation is validated with satisfactory numerical experiments.

Abstract:For spiral cone-beam CT, parallel computing is an effective approach to resolving the problem of heavy computation burden. It is well known that the major computation time is spent in the backprojection step for either filtered-backprojection (FBP) or backprojected-filtration (BPF) algorithms. By the cone-beam cover method [1], the backprojection procedure is driven by cone-beam projections, and every cone-beam projection can be backprojected independently. Basing on this fact, we develop a parallel implementation of Katsevich's FBP algorithm. We do all the numerical experiments on a Linux cluster. In one typical experiment, the sequential reconstruction time is 781.3 seconds, while the parallel reconstruction time is 25.7 seconds with 32 processors.
Verifying Cone-Beam Ct Extended Axial Coverage With Iterative Reconstruction Using Real Data

Abstract:The limited detector size of cone-beam CT (CBCT) imaging devices restricts their axial coverage. We previously found in simulation studies that the useful axial coverage could be extended by using two circular scans at different axial positions. By combining this dual scan with iterative reconstruction techniques, we can increase the useful field of view while providing better image quality in the region between the two circles. Here we experimentally verify our previous simulation studies with real phantom scan data. We found that even with real data, iterative techniques reconstruct more of the imaged volume with less cone-angle artifacts than using the stacked analytic reconstructions of the two scanned volumes. This indicates iterative reconstruction with dual circle trajectories can be used to extend axial coverage in CBCT.
Parallel PI-line Segment-Based Parallel Beam CT Reconstruction

Abstract:A simplified algorithm for parallel-beam computed tomography (CT) reconstruction was developed using a PI-line segment-based backprojection algorithm in CT system. The algorithm first differentates the parallel beam projection data which is then backprojected onto a series of parallel PI-line segments. The data on the PI-line segments are then filtered using a Hilbert transform to get the reconstructed image. Numerical simulations using the Shepp-Logan model demonstrates that the algorithm can accurately reconstruct images. Analysis of real images from a micro-focus X-ray CT system also illustrates the systems effectiveness.

Abstract:The derivative back-projection filtered algorithm for a helical cone-beam CT is a newly developed exact reconstruction method.Due to its large computational complexity,the reconstruction is rather slow for practical use.General purpose graphic processing unit(GPGPU) is an SIMD paralleled hardware architecture with powerful float-point operation capacity.In this paper,we propose a new method for PI-line choice and sampling grid,and a paralleled PI-line reconstruction algorithm implemented on NVIDIA's Compute Unified Device Architecture(CUDA).Numerical simulation studies are carried out to validate our method.Compared with conventional CPU implementation,the CUDA accelerated method provides images of the same quality with a speedup factor of 318.Optimization strategies for the GPU acceleration are presented.Finally,influence of the parameters of the PI-line samples on the reconstruction speed and image quality is discussed.

Abstract:BACKGROUND:For cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT), which has been playing an important role in clinical applications, iterative reconstruction algorithms are able to provide advantageous image qualities over the classical FDK. However, the computational speed of iterative reconstruction is a notable issue for CBCT, of which the forward projection calculation is one of the most time-consuming components.METHOD AND RESULTS:In this study, the cone-beam forward projection problem using the voxel-driven model is analysed, and a GPU-based acceleration method for CBCT forward projection is proposed with the method rationale and implementation workflow detailed as well. For method validation and evaluation, computational simulations are performed, and the calculation times of different methods are collected. Compared with the benchmark CPU processing time, the proposed method performs effectively in handling the inter-thread interference problem, and an acceleration ratio as high as more than 100 is achieved compared to a single-threaded CPU implementation.CONCLUSION:The voxel-driven forward projection calculation for CBCT is highly paralleled by the proposed method, and we believe it will serve as a critical module to develop iterative reconstruction and correction methods for CBCT imaging.

Abstract:This work demonstrates a new approach for geometric parameters estimation of cone-beam computed tomography system from the coordinates of the centroids of 2 projected point sources sampled over 360 degrees. Nonlinear object expression was derived for the coordinates of the centroids in terms of the geometric parameters after a slice of reasonable simplification, which aims to improve the convergence and robustness of the nonlinear object expression. All of the geometric parameters could be precisely estimated from the nonlinear object expression using the annealing algorithm. The simulations and experiments indicate more excellent convergence, robustness, and precision of our approach compared with other methods. Furthermore, our approach is insensitive to the initial value; namely, we do not need to set the value close to the true value to guarantee the convergence of the approach.

Abstract:Compared with usual fan-beam and parallel-beam CT, CBCT has numerous advantages, such as higher spatial resolution, faster scan speed, and etc. Because of the simpler theory structure and faster reconstruction speed, approximate cone beam reconstruction algorithms have become more and more popular in commercial applications. For their theoretical and practical value, several recent developed approximate algorithms are discussed here. We compare the advantages and disadvantages of these algorithms through some simulation reconstruction tests.

Abstract:BACKGROUND: Due to large dimensional matrix multiplications, the existing iterative algorithms for cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) reconstruction often face problems of heavy computational workload and large volume of memory usage. OBJECTIVE: This study proposes and tests an iterative algorithm of 3DA-TVAL3 for fast reconstruction of CBCT images using undersampled measurement data and the reduced amount of computer memories. METHODS: In order to reduce computational workload and computer memories based on the sparsity of the CBCT measurement matrix, the proposed iterative algorithm applies elementwise scalar multiplications in the iterative computation to search for optimal solution. Through a number of tests on three different CT data sets with different number of projections, the reconstruction performance of the proposed algorithm is compared with that of two accelerated iterative algorithms and the conventional FDK algorithm. RESULTS: The visual and quantitative evaluations using the normalized mean square error, peak signal to noise ratio and structural similarity metrics demonstrated the faster computational time and the higher image quality of using the proposed 3DA-TVAL3 algorithm than using other conventional algorithms under comparison. CONCLUSIONS: The proposed 3DA-TVAL3 algorithm can perform efficient and fast computation of CBCT reconstruction using the reduced amount of computer memories.

Abstract:A circular scanning trajectory is and will likely remain a popular choice of trajectory in computed tomography (CT) imaging because it is easy to implement and control. Filtered-backprojection (FBP)-based algorithms have been developed previously for approximate and exact reconstruction of the entire image or a region of interest within the image in circular cone-beam and fan-beam cases. Recently, we have developed a 3D FBP-based algorithm for image reconstruction on PI-line segments in a helical cone-beam scan. In this work, we demonstrated that the 3D FBP-based algorithm indeed provided a rather general formulation for image reconstruction from divergent projections (such as cone-beam and fan-beam projections). On the basis of this formulation we derived new approximate or exact algorithms for image reconstruction in circular cone-beam or fan-beam scans, which can be interpreted as special cases of the helical scan. Existing algorithms corresponding to the derived algorithms were identified. We also performed a preliminary numerical study to verify our theoretical results in each of the cases. The results in the work can readily be generalized to other non-circular trajectories.

Abstract:C-arm CBCT utilizing a flat-panel detector has been implemented in surgical suites for integration of tomographic imaging capabilities in the intra-operative workflow. In particular, cerebral vascular applications have emerged that rely on C-arm CBCT angiography for making clinical decisions on treatment selection. Current C-arm CBCT angiography employing analytic-based reconstruction algorithms has limitations on sub-optimal image quality due to irregular gantry motion, as well as issues of long scanning time and non-negligible imaging dose. In this work, we investigated the adaptation of an optimization-based algorithm for reconstructing C-arm CBCT images of patient cerebral vasculature from full- and reduced-view data. In particular, the gantry-motion irregularity was experimentally characterized and fully incorporated in the reconstruction algorithm. The results show that the optimization-based algorithm can yield visibly improved quality from full-view data, and some important vascular structures of potential clinical utility can be obtained from data containing substantially reduced number of views.

Abstract:In this paper, variable pitch helical cone-beam CT is studied. We prove a sufficient condition for the existence of PI-lines inside this variable pitch helix. Under this condition. we propose a new scanning configuration, called a spring scan, which can be used to scan a cylindrical object support. Based on Zou and Pan's BPF algorithm, we develop an exact BPF-type reconstruction algorithm for helical cone-beam CT in which the pitch of the helix varies with rotation angles. The algorithm includes four steps and can be used in region-of-interest (ROI) reconstruction by the PI-line determination step without a rebinning procedure as other BPF algorithms. Moreover, the algorithm can exactly reconstruct the object image only using the projection data within the Tam-Danielsson window, while; Katsevich's algorithm requires more data than it. Furthermore, we test the proposed algorithm using the 3D Shepp-Logan phantom by a spring scan. The numerical results are described to support the correctness of the algorithm.

Abstract:Image reconstruction of 3D cone-beam tomography using the FDK algorithm requires huge computational resource.The reconstruction of a high resolution 3D object would usually take a long time,which is intolerable in real applications.Parallel computing using cluster systems is one of the common approaches to solve this problem.The mixed model with both MPI and Pthreads is used to parallelize the FDK algorithm on a SMP cluster.The computation is parallelized in a two-level manner with both Message-Passing among nodes and Shared-Memory within each node.Our simulation results on the SMP cluster system are reported.

Abstract:We apply task-based evaluation methods to image-reconstruction in circular cone-beam CT. The particular task considered is that of detection of a micro-calcification of known location in a known background; namely a signal-known-exactly/background-known-exactly (SKE/BKE) detection task. The image-reconstruction algorithms are evaluated based on efficiency for detection. This task-based metric can be applied to any linear image-reconstruction algorithm, such as the FDK algorithm or other more recent approximate methods for image-reconstruction in circular, cone-beam CT.
A Novel GPU Based Cone Beam CT Forward Projection Method

Abstract:The forward projection of cone-beam CT image reconstruction algorithms requires both excessive computation and time consuming.A novel CT forward projection method based on graphics processing unit is proposed for accelerating the forward projection calculation.The method achieves the forward projection calculation in circular cone-beam scanning mode by using texture mapping techniques in GPU programmable pipeline.Because projections are calculated slice by slice in parallel,this method has the advantages of higher computational efficiency and calculation at full floating point precision.Three optimization methods are also presented for further improving the execution efficiency of the method.The advantages of this method are verified by the experiments of the projection calculation of Shepp-logan phantom and 3D image reconstruction with iterative image reconstruction algorithm.
Software Implementation of the Krylov Methods Based Reconstruction for the 3D Cone Beam CT Operator

Abstract:Krylov subspace methods are considered a standard tool to solve large systems of linear algebraic equations in many scientific disciplines such as image restoration or solving partial differential equations in mechanics of continuum. In the context of computer tomography however, the mostly used algebraic reconstruction techniques are based on classical iterative schemes. In this work we present software package that implements fully 3D cone beam projection operator and uses Krylov subspace methods, namely CGLS and LSQR to solve related tomographic reconstruction problems. It also implements basic preconditioning strategies. On the example of the cone beam CT reconstruction of 3D Shepp-Logan phantom we show that the speed of convergence of the CGLS clearly outperforms PSIRT algorithm. Therefore Krylov subspace methods present an interesting option for the reconstruction of large 3D cone beam CT problems.

Pi-Line-Based Image Reconstruction in Helical Cone-Beam Computed Tomography with A Variable Pitch

Abstract:Current applications of helical cone‐beam computed tomography (CT) involve primarily a constant pitch where the translating speed of the table and the rotation speed of the source‐detector remain constant. However, situations do exist where it may be more desirable to use a helical scan with a variable translating speed of the table, leading a variable pitch. One of such applications could arise in helical cone‐beam CT fluoroscopy for the determination of vascular structures through real‐time imaging of contrast bolus arrival. Most of the existing reconstruction algorithms have been developed only for helical cone‐beam CT with constant pitch, including the backprojection‐filtration (BPF) and filtered‐backprojection (FBP) algorithms that we proposed previously. It is possible to generalize some of these algorithms to reconstruct images exactly for helical cone‐beam CT with a variable pitch. In this work, we generalize our BPF and FBP algorithms to reconstruct images directly from data acquired in helical cone‐beam CT with a variable pitch. We have also performed a preliminary numerical study to demonstrate and verify the generalization of the two algorithms. The results of the study confirm that our generalized BPF and FBP algorithms can yield exact reconstruction in helical cone‐beam CT with a variable pitch. It should be pointed out that our generalized BPF algorithm is the only algorithm that is capable of reconstructing exactly region‐of‐interest image from data containing transverse truncations.
A General Exact Method for Synthesizing Parallel-Beam Projections from Cone-Beam Projections Via Filtered Backprojection

Abstract:In recent years, image reconstruction methods for cone-beam computed tomography (CT) have been extensively studied. However, few of these studies discussed computing parallel-beam projections from cone-beam projections. In this paper, we focus on the exact synthesis of complete or incomplete parallel-beam projections from cone-beam projections. First, an extended central slice theorem is described to establish a relationship between the Radon space and the Fourier space. Then, data sufficiency conditions are proposed for computing parallel-beam projection data from cone-beam data. Using these results, a general filtered backprojection algorithm is formulated that can exactly synthesize parallel-beam projection data from cone-beam projection data. As an example, we prove that parallel-beam projections can be exactly synthesized in an angular range in the case of circular cone-beam scanning. Interestingly, this angular range is larger than that derived in the Feldkamp reconstruction framework. Numerical experiments are performed in the circular scanning case to verify our method.
Cutting Voxel Projector a New Approach to Construct 3D Cone Beam CT Operator

Abstract:In this paper, we introduce a novel class of projectors for 3D cone beam tomographic reconstruction. Analytical formulas are derived to compute the relationship between the volume of a voxel projected onto a detector pixel and its contribution to the line integral of attenuation recorded by that pixel. Based on these formulas, we construct a near-exact projector and backprojector, particularly suited for algebraic reconstruction techniques and hierarchical reconstruction approaches with nonuniform voxel grids. Unlike traditional projectors, which assume a uniform grid with fixed voxel sizes, our method enables local refinement of voxels, allowing for adaptive grid resolution and improved reconstruction quality in regions of interest. We have implemented this cutting voxel projector along with a relaxed, speed-optimized version and compared them to two established projectors: a ray-tracing projector based on Siddon's algorithm and a TT footprint projector. Our results demonstrate that the cutting voxel projector achieves higher accuracy than the TT projector, especially for large cone beam angles. Furthermore, the relaxed version of the cutting voxel projector offers a significant speed advantage over current footprint projector implementations, while maintaining comparable accuracy. In contrast, Siddon's algorithm, when achieving similar accuracy, is considerably slower than the cutting voxel projector. All algorithms are implemented in an open-source framework for algebraic reconstruction using OpenCL and C++, optimized for efficient GPU computation. Abstract:A transform theory was developed for computed tomography(CT) projections to exactly compute the parallel-beam projections from the cone-beam projections.An algorithm was then developed for any kind of scanning trajectory.Two data sufficiency conditions are needed to exactly transform the cone-beam projections into parallel-beam projections.The CT projection transform theory for circular cone-beam CT effectively improves reconstructions of the FDK type algorithm by reducing the intensity reductions in FDK reconstructions with large cone angles.Simulations validated the method.
