Abstract:The polymer industry in China has developed rapidly over the past 30 years, which can be greatly attributed to the active R&D conducted by Chinese scholars in polymer reaction engineering (PRE) and their cultivation of high level talents. The research focus on PRE in China has shifted from the application development to both applied and fundamental research at present. The PRE researchers closely collaborate with the enterprises and the world leading scholars. The research objective has been evolved from optimizing efficiency of polymerization processes to precise control of the structures of polymer chains and primary aggregates. This essay summarizes the history, characteristics, and latest progresses of the PRE research in China, with emphasis on the research activities at Zhejiang University.

Abstract:We report here a unique, simple method for synthesizing polymer film gradients with nanometer thickness through diffusion controlled Surface polymerization. Polar solvents, especially water, have previously been shown to increase the rate of atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) of numerous monomers. That result made it apparent that the rate of ATRP polymerization could be regulated by the concentration of water in the polymerization solution. Oil the basis of this observation, WC Successfully developed a simple method for preparing polymer thin Film gradients on substrates by water concentration gradient formed along, the surface of substrates. An initiator attached Substrate was placed in it two-layer system of water and it Polymerization solution in which the diffusion of water into the polymerization Solution resulted in it monomer concentration gradient, leading to varied polymerization rates along the Substrate, and finally polymer thin Film gradients. Poly(ethylene glycol) methacrylate (PEGMA) gradient thin films formed on silica surfaces have thickness ranging from a few of hundreds of angstroms to more than 1000 angstrom.

Abstract:Polymer chain microstructures, such as copolymer composition distribution (CCD) and topology, play an important role in determining materials properties of the polymer products. The design and control of polymer chain microstructures represents an important task in macromolecular reaction engineering. Semi‐batch copolymerization with the model‐based design of comonomer feeding policies provides a powerful approach enabling precision production of CCD, topology, and their combined structures in controlled radical copolymerization systems. Various novel polymer products with predesigned CCDs and topologies have been successfully prepared by the approach. This article highlights the recent progresses in this area.

Abstract:A many-shot RAFT emulsion polymerization method is proposed to synthesize gradient copolymers with high molecular weight and a tailor-made compositional gradient. In this method each shot consisting of comonomers with pre-set different fractions and targeting the molecular weight of 10 000 g mol(-1) was added in a stepwise manner during the reaction. High conversions over 95% were achieved in 35 min after each shot. The compositional variation along the polymer chain was then directly determined by the comonomer fractions added at each shot. Styrene/n-butyl acrylate gradient copolymers (including linear and V-shaped gradient) with molecular weights as high as 90 000 g mol(-1) were prepared by this method. The composition profiles along the polymer chains agreed well with the theoretical predictions, and the composition distribution among the polymer chains was narrow. The gradient copolymers showed different thermal and phase separation properties from their block counterparts, as expected. These results demonstrated the successful tailor-making of the gradient copolymers. The current strategy will act as a facile method to prepare tailor-made gradient copolymers with high molecular weights and within a short time.

Abstract:Functional gradient materials with material property anisotropy are one of the hotspots of current new material research. The gradient change of material properties comes from the change of the content of one or more components in the material, which is closely related to the preparation process of the material. Meanwhile, polysaccharide materials, as an environmentally friendly and green material, have attracted extensive attention from researchers. This paper focuses on the preparation process of functional gradient gel materials based on polysaccharides, analyzes the laws affecting the distribution of substances during the molding process from the basic principles of material molding, and clarifies the advantages and disadvantages of various methods, so as to promote the innovation of the theory of the preparation method of functional gradient gel materials. At the same time, the specific applications that can be realized by the gradient materials are introduced and compared with the traditional homogeneous materials to elucidate the enhancement of the usage properties brought by their unique gradient structure or properties, which will play a certain role as a reference for the direction of the application of the subsequent materials.

Abstract:The product from free radical and coordination polymerization generally are homopolymer or random copolymer with broad molecular weight distribution.In the past two decades,the breakthroughs in controlled/living radical and coordination polymerization and shuttling polymerization make it possible to use almost all vinyl monomers,particularly those cheap monomers,to produce more complex chain structures like di-,tri-block copolymer and gradient copolymers.With rational design,these copolymers might be high performance and high added value synthetic materials.The mechanisms and the up-to-date progress of these polymerization methods were introduced,and their possible applications were discussed.

Abstract:So-called functionally gradient materials have received increased attention as a new type of composite whose microelements, including composition and structure, change spatially to optimize the gradient properties for a specific application. In this study, a new technique for continuously preparing a filled type of PGM was investigated through co-extrusion/gradient distribution/2-dimensional mixing with conventional polymeric material processing facilities. The processing line from co-extrusion, gradient distribution to 2-dimensional mixing was fulfilled by two extruders, a gradient distribution unit and 2-dimensional mixing units. The gradient distribution unit and 2-dimensional mixing units were designed separately in our group. As an example, a PE/GB PGM was prepared by using this new technique. The gradient variation of composition along the sample thickness direction was studied by TG and SEM. The TG results indicated that a gradient variation of the content of GB was formed along the thickness of the sample. The direct gradient distribution of GB came from SEM observation, which showed an increased stacking density of GB along the sample thickness. Experimental results indicated that the processing method with co-extrusion/ gradient distribution/2-dimensional mixing can serve as a new way to produce a filled type of PGM and is worthy of further investigation.

Abstract:The functionally gradient materials (FGM) are a new kind of composite materials which are applied widely because of their excellent performance. In this paper, the history of FGM is reviewed 'and the preparation methods of FGM are summarized. Some preparation methods of FGM are introduced, including the plasma spray coating technology, the powder metallurgical method, electrodepositon method and vapour deposition processes. The key areas of future research are put forward.

Abstract:In this work, a novel processing method that combined extruding with laminate molding for preparing polymeric gradient material (PGM) has been investigated. Three modes of polypropylene/polyamide-6 flat PGM (signed with A1, A2, A3) are prepared successfully by using this new technique. The variation of composition, morphology and mechanical properties of specimens sampled along the thickness direction of these flat PGMs was confirmed and characterized through measurements of WAXD, elemental analysis, TEM observation and mechanical tests. Results indicate that the content of either polymer shows a gradient variation along the thickness direction. TEM photographs exhibit that morphology also evolves gradually with the varying percentage ratio of two polymers. As a result of such variations in composition and structure, the mechanical properties on both sides or from central part to outside of the flat PGMs exhibit a significant difference.

Abstract:A new type of polymer electrolyte based on gradient copolymers is proposed to resolve the problem of low ionic conductivity faced by polymer electrolytes. A series of random, block,, and gradient copolymers of styrene (St) and methyl acrylate (MA) are synthesized by a living radical polymerization method and employed as polymer electrolytes for lithium-ion batteries. The gradient copolymer has gradual change in the monomeric composition along polymer chains. There is no abrupt composition change between the adjacent blocks. This design minimizes possible sharp domain boundaries and generates highly conductive smooth ion pathways. The gradient copolymer gel electrolyte filled with a regular ester electrolyte gives the highest ionic conductivity of 1.20 x 10(-3) S cm(-1) at room temperature, which meets the requirement of practical applications.

Abstract:A novel methodology to facilely synthesize gradient copolymers has been successfully developed by concurrent enzymatic monomer transformation and reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerization. By synchronizing enzymatic monomer transformation with polymerization, continuous supply of a second monomer is achieved during the polymerization, resulting in gradient monomer distribution in the final polymer. Various alcohols were used for in situ monomer transformation with trifluoroethyl methacrylate (TFEMA), and corresponding gradient copolymers could be successfully prepared. This method is facile and versatile, providing an alternative candidate for preparing gradient polymers with specific monomer sequences.

Among the available fabrication approaches, nanolithographies combined with self-assembled monolayers and surface-initiated polymerization have became powerful tools to engineer confined gradients or predefined complex gradients on the nanometre size. In this tutorial review, we mainly highlight the research progress of the fabrication of confined polymer brush gradients by using electron beam, laser, and probe-based nanolithographies and the physical base for these approaches. The application of these polymer brush gradients in biomedical research is also addressed.

Abstract:<p class="a-plus-plus">Monomer sequence influences the properties and applications of polymers. Consequently, massive efforts have been made to implement sequence control of polymers. In this work, we developed a computer-aided droplet-flow polymerization based on photo-controlled reversible-deactivation radical polymerization (photo-RDRP), enabling synthesis of gradient copolymers of tunable sequential arrangements, low dispersity and good structural fidelity from various monomers without following their intrinsic reactivities, which is a key limitation in sequence control. The obtained gradient copolymers exhibit unique thermal properties and stimulus responsiveness comparing with the random and block counterparts, and their glass transition behaviour could be regulated by the gradient tendency. We believe that the unprecedented gradient photo-RDRP based on flow synthesis opens a robust and versatile avenue to streamline the synthesis of well-defined gradient polymers, and is compatible with other polymerization mechanisms.</p>

Abstract:In recent years, polymer/graphene nanocomposites have attracted much attention because of their wide applications in many fields, such as chemistry, physics, materials and electronics. In this review, the preparation methods of polymer/graphene nanocomposites, including solution blending, melt blending and in situ polymerisation, were presented in order to study the relationship between these methods and their final properties. Each method has an influence on the final characteristics of the nanocomposites. Their respective advantages and disadvantages were discussed. Additionally, the potential application research of graphene-reinforced polymer nanocomposites, including supercapacitors, sensors and solar cells was detailed comprehensively. The current review demonstrated that the nanocomposites exhibit superior performances and will be applied as new materials or novel devices. The research direction of polymer/graphene nanocomposites in the future was also predicted.
