Abstract:A peak holding circuit developed by us for fast narrow pulse is introduced briefly in this paper.Amplitude of input signal is ≥50mV,rise time≤3ns,pulse width≤15ns,frequency≥20MHz,gain=3,the time of peak holding can be adjusted in the range of 400ns to 5μs.The structure of the circuit is simple and the reliability is good.

Abstract:A 3 MHz, 48W Boost converter with high speed and high accuracy Peak Current Control Unit (PCCU) is presented. The Boost controller IC adopts a novel PCCU consisting of a fully differential open-loop operational transconductance amplifier (OTA) and a trans-impedance amplifier (TIA), which can minimize the delay and error of the whole control loop. In the PCCU, the compensated output of error amplifier is moved forward to improve the control accuracy further. This IC is designed in CSMC 0.8 um 60 V BCD process. The simulation results show the Boost converter operates at 3 MHz and the peak current control error is 1.3% under the worst situation. The delay of peak current trigger point to the low side gate driver (LDRV) output is 25.14 ns and the delay of the compensated output of error amplifier to LDRV output is 37.56 ns.

Abstract:The phenomena of charge injection, clock feedthrough and charge sharing in charge pump are analyzed, and the relevant measures are given. Based on above analysis, we proposed a new type of charge pump circuit, which is simple, suitable for high speed PLL circuit and can work at low supply. The charge pump is designed according to a standard CMOS 0.18 μm technology. It is able to operate at 1 V supply and the output voltage is from 100 mV to 980 mV, power comsumption about 130μw, not exhibiting any spurious jump phenomenon.

Abstract:A high voltage pulse source with 300 kV peak voltage and less than 3 ns risetime was developed.The peaking circuit which consists of a peaking capacitor and an output switch is the key part of this source.The primary requirement of the peaking circuit is decreasing its stray inductance as low as possible for getting a fast risetime.Compact structures were designed especially for the peaking capacitor,the output switch and their connection.The peaking capacitor is made of three coaxial foil capacitors connected in series and the special gap structure at the end of each electrode is designed for improving its insulating ability.This capacitor can endure more than 300 kV pulse voltage with 17 ns risetime.The output switch is a SF6 gas switch with high pressure(up to 1.0 MPa) and small gap(1~3 mm),whose characteristics are obtained by experiment.Using this peaking circuit,a 300 kV pulse voltage with risetime less than 3 ns was obtained on 150 Ω load.

Abstract:A high voltage and high repetition-rate P-C switch is designed. The switch contains Peaking gap and Chopping gap, which can be adjusted by turning two groups of symmetrical rotary knobs outside the cavity respectively. The switch can sharpen the rise-time and fall-time of the input pulse synchronously, and can transform a nanosecond pulse signal into a sub-nanosecond pulse signal. Experimental researches on the P-C switch are performed on the “SOS” pulse source, and experimental results are analyzed. The results prove that the gap, gap pressure and repetition-rate of the switch all have great effect on the rise-time, fall-time, pulse-width and voltage range of the output pulse and the P-C switch has excellent operating characteristics when it operates at short gap and high gap pressure. It's also reveals that the rise-time of the input pulse is more sharp, the gap-breakdown delay is shorter and the breakdown voltage is higher. The switch can steadily work with 8MPa gap pressure at 100Hz repetition-rate and export pulses with 129.2kV peak voltage, 460ps pulse-width, 400ps rise-time, and 320ps fall-time.
Review on peak detect and hold circuits and their applicability in partial discharge detection

Abstract:This article reviews various designs of electrical peak detect and hold circuits and tests their applicability for the detection of partial discharge pulses. Since partial discharges are very short pulses in the nanosecond range, the peak detector circuit must be very fast and thus work precisely over a wide bandwidth up to the GHz range. The article begins with a comprehensive literature review and gives an overview of the state of the art of peak detector circuits. As a result of the literature research, four different peak detector designs are identified that appear suitable for measuring partial discharges. These four circuits are then simulatively tested for their performance in measuring the pulse height of various partial discharge pulses. It turns out that two of the identified circuits are able to measure nanosecond pulses of small amplitude. These two circuits must be further optimized for partial discharge detection in the future. In addition, the circuit should be tested prototypically with real partial discharge pulses.

Abstract:An extremely compact high voltage peaking capacitor is developed. The capacitor has a pancake structure with a diameter of 315 mm, a thickness of 59 mm, and a mass of 6.1 kg. The novel structural design endows the capacitor with a better mechanical stability and reliability under hundreds of kilovolts pulse voltage and an inner gas pressure of more than 1.5 MPa. The theoretical value of the capacitor self-inductance is near to 17 nH. Proved by series of electrical experiments, the capacitor can endure a high-voltage pulse with a rise time of about 20 ns, a half-width duration of around 25 ns, and an amplitude of up to 800 kV in a single shot model. When the capacitor was used in an electromagnetic pulse simulator as a peaking capacitor, the rise time of the voltage pulse can be reduced from 20 ns to less than 3 ns. The practical value of the capacitor's inductance deduced from the experimental date is no more than 25 nH.

Abstract:Based on step recovery diode,a pulse fast edge shaping circuit is realized.Benefited from the long storage time and short transient time of step recovery diode,the design can effectively optimize the shape of rising edge of a square pulse,shorten its rising time to(140±20) ps,amplitude to(1.75±0.05) V,and achieve a compensation of pulse duty cycle.Detailed circuit structures and operation principle are illustrated.Experiment results show that the circuit exactly conforms to the design specifications.

Abstract:A new electric circuit for generating extremely fast triangle waveform pulse with avalanche transistors has been designed and developed. In order to reduce the jitter of this circuit, a specially designed trigger unit has been employed. The experiments have shown that the full width at half maximum (FWHM) of the generated triangle waveform pulse is 3.5 ns and its rising and falling times are both 2 ns at the amplitude of +/- 1.3 KV. The testing has also indicated that its delay time and jitter are 8 ns and +/- 15 ps, respectively when the light signal changes by 30%. This circuit will find wide application in the picosecond framing and femtosecond streak cameras.

Abstract:In many fields, e.g., ground-penetrating radar and ultra-wideband radiation, a high-pulse-repetition-frequency (PRF) and high-time-base-stability sub-nanosecond pulser is required, and its output waveform should be close to a gaussian pulse. In this article, the transistorized pulser is studied and optimized to improve its output parameters. The printed circuit board circuit parameters of the pulser are first optimized, which is beneficial for the amplitude and the rise time. To improve the time base stability, the collector voltage ramp triggering mode is adopted to replace the conventional base triggering mode for the pulser. For higher PRF, the pulser with the capacitance–transistor parallel structure is immersed in the fluorinert liquid. Moreover, the deficit-charge method is adopted, and small charging capacitances are used in the last few stages to weaken the oscillation in the pulse falling edge. From experimental results, the amplitude of the optimized pulser is 1.35 kV, its rise time is reduced from about 200 to 135 ps, the maximum PRF is improved from 250 to 500 kHz, the pulse jitter is reduced to 22 ps, and the pulse drift is reduced from hundreds of ps/min to 47 ps/min. Meanwhile, the oscillation in its falling edge is greatly suppressed.

Abstract:A high-voltage with high repetition rate pulse generator is presented. Nonlinear transmission line (NLTL) circuit is introduced to compress the rise time of input pulse. Forty-nine sections NLTL model is proposed, and the rise time of an input pulse voltage of 3-kV amplitude can be reduced from 150 to less than 55ns. Moreover, NLTL with 49 L-C sections is also designed and soliton theory is discussed. Simulated results demonstrate the availability of this design. Pulse generator which provides 0-8 kV adjustable voltage is fabricated. The repetition rate can reach to 400 kHz, and the rise time is scaled to 142ns.

Abstract:We develop a fast rise time pulser which can be used to test the insulation ability of materials against pulse voltage in electrical system.The pulser can produce a pulse wave with 50 ns rise time and 1000 kV peak voltage.The Marx of the device,which is completely immersed into insulation oil,is comprised of 10 0.015 μF/100 kV plastic shell capacitors.Because the rise time of a pulse wave is decided by the inductance of the discharging circuit,we must adopt methods to decrease the inductance.In our design,we parallel a 500 Ω resistor to the capacitance load in order to accelerate the decay of the output oscillating wave,which can lower the requirements for insulation.Then,the size of the device can be made relatively small and the inductance is reduced.Since the actual load is insulation materials in power system and most operations are in the non-breakdown condition,we adopt a capacitor to replace the load in electrical design,which ranges from 30 pF to 80 pF.In addition,a transforming line is used to connect the Marx with the load and the line is composed of two metal pipes,between which is filled with oil to insulate.The design of the device is presented,and the simulation results by Pspice show that when the peak voltage of the output pulse is set to 1000 kV,the rise time ranges from 23 ns to 28 ns,which meets the requirements completely.

Abstract:Due to the lack of a standard nanosecond high-voltage pulse generator for sensor calibration, a high-stability nanosecond high-voltage pulse test system was developed in terms of circuit analysis, structural design, and performance test. By establishing the equivalent circuit model of the nanosecond pulse generator, the circuit component parameters of the five-stage Marx loop and the one-stage compression steepening unit were simulated. The influence of the action performance of the steepening gap on the characteristics of output nanosecond pulse was analyzed. The nanosecond pulse test system was established through the structural design of the nanosecond pulse-generating circuit, the development of a high-performance corona-stabilized switch, and the measurement of a fast-response resistance divider made of metal oxide thin-film resistors. The nanosecond pulse test system has the capability to output a double exponential nanosecond pulse voltages in the amplitude range of 10–60 kV with a rise time of 2.3 ± 0.5 ns and a half-peak time of 23 ± 5 ns. In addition, the output pulse voltage has a high consistency and stability in the full amplitude range. The maximum relative standard deviation of the peak value is 1.517%, and the relative standard uncertainty is less than 5‰.

Abstract:Peak detection is useful in a wide range of applications. To achieve this task, conventional approaches [including dedicated application specific integrated circuit-based designs] often demand analog readout chains and compulsory add-ons [e.g., additional analogy-to-digital converter (ADC) for peak sampling], rendering them neither compact nor flexible. In this article, we propose a field programmable gate array (FPGA)-only solution to fulfill this task without any external components. Specifically, we achieve peak detection with only a low-voltage differential signaling (LVDS) comparator and two general-purpose input/outputs (GPIOs). Therefore, one can flexibly make a practical deployment by a simple routing process, a nontrivial task even for inexperienced engineers. Meanwhile, to further compact the design for peak sampling, we leverage an FPGA-based slope ADC within which, we propose a new resource-efficient and calibration-free time-to-digital converter architecture. The underlying rational is to minimize the nonlinearity problem by squeezing all resources within a single clock region. We have implemented a prototype using Xilinx FPGA and extensively evaluated its performance in rather challenging scenarios. Results demonstrate a peak digitization error of only about 30 mV in a full 1.8 V range for impulses with as few as 10ns pulsewidth. Meanwhile, in a practical deployment that requires a wide range of peak sampling, the achieved energy resolution is only 1.3% worse than a dedicated high-speed oscilloscope.

Abstract:This paper presents a pulse circuit using a subnanosecond discharge tube.Through calculation and test research,the amplitude,half-width and rise time of the pulse are given.The paper also gives the structure parameters and principle of selecting the elements of the circuit.The lab test indicates that the pulse signal it produces is steady,with wide spectrum and has good repeatability.The rise time of pulse signal is less than 500ps,half-width is less than 1ns and amplitude is larger than 4KV.It can be used as the PD source in the study of propagation characteristic in the UHF PD measuring for power transformer and GIS.

Abstract:Pulsed power technology has traditionally served in the field of defense technology and is generally operated in a single operation. With the increasing demand in the military and high-energy physics fields, especially in the fields of medicine [1], industry, environmental protection and electromagnetic interference, the demand for high average power is becoming more and more urgent, requiring the pulse source to be in a high repetition frequency operating state. The high-repetition-frequency high-voltage pulse source is a pulse power system that can operate at high repetition frequencies and generate high voltage pulses. Ultra-wideband electrical pulse sources with small size and all solid-state structures are easier to integrate into the system and compatible with other devices. This paper introduces the design and implementation of a high-repetition-frequency high-voltage pulse generating device. The device is mainly composed of a pulse signal source module, a power amplification module and a pulse compression module. The article describes in detail about the pulse signal generation module based on MCU (micro-controller unit) and FPGA (field programmable gatearray) with adjustable frequency adjustable pulse width at the source level, the pulse signal power amplification module based on DSRD (drift step recovery diode) [2] switch, the pulse compression module based on the principle of diode reverse recovery. The final test results show that the device can work at 1MHz repeat frequency, the output pulse peak voltage can be up to 1700V on 50 Omega load, the output pulse rising edge is less than 1 ns, and the half pulse width is up to 1.9 ns. If the pulse compression module is connected, the half pulse width can reach 1.56 ns and the compression ratio can reach 87%.

Abstract:A generator which can produce high voltage pulse with nanosecond rise time was designed.The generator is based on the use of avalanche transistor in a Marx Bank circuit.As a result,Qswitching speed increases from 90 ns to less than 20 ns,peak power of output pulse increases from 25 mW to 93 mW and pulse width decreases from 16 ns to 8 ns.The generator has many merits such as small bulk,low power consumption,low EMI,high repetition rate,long operating life etc.

Abstract:In recent years, nanosecond pulse power techniques used in the millimeter-wave solid-state pulse power amplifiers attracted much attention. The rise- and fall-time of the pulse, the flatness of pulse-top and the stability of pulse-to-pulse, which have play important roles in a nanosecond pulse power generator techniques, and directly determine the system performance. In this paper, a method using the outbreak current with low-voltage to drive MOS-FETs is proposed. The measured results show that the rise- and fall-time of the output pulse is less than 1.5 ns with a pure resistance 0.5Ω, and it only needs two 12V power supply to give a output current of 20A with a pulse width of 160 ns at a repetition rate of 540 kHz in continuous mode. A flatness of 3% for the output voltage was obtained,which meet the requirements of ka-band solid-state millimeter-wave pulse power amplifier.

Abstract:High voltage power pulses with adjustable fall time and pulsewidth are of great significance, especially in Q-switched laser applications. In this paper, a high-speed high-voltage pulse generator based on programable multi narrow pulses drive method for series MOSFETs is proposed to realize smooth and controllable falling slopes output. The designed system integrates a microcontroller (MCU), a programmable delay line array, multi narrow drive pulses, and an isolated gate drive circuit, which collectively facilitate both logic control and robust driving capabilities. The operation principles of the isolated gate drive circuit and the strategies for adjusting fall times are analyzed in detail. In experiments, adjustable fall times in the range of 40220ns, 30-260ns, and 35-220ns were achieved across a 30pF capacitor, 10kΩ resistor, and 3.3μH inductor, respectively. Furthermore, a wide adjustable pulsewidth range of 150ns-400ms at the maximum amplitude of ±3kV was obtained. These results prove that this multi narrow pulses drive method is feasible and effective for programmable control of the falling slopes, and can be further applied in obtaining adjustable rising edges. As well as that, this generator is suitable for high-speed high-voltage pulse applications, especially where there are special requirements for pulsewidth and falling slopes
