Abstract:Beam-string (frame-string) structures have been adopted in several large-span structures in China. However, theoretical analysis of this kind of structures has not been well established. Some problems in the design and construction of beam-string structures are presented and discussed including the pre-stress distribution of each element corresponding to the initial geometry and the simulation of construction process. First, the equilibrium matrix theory is extended to the analysis of hybrid spatial structures composed of beams, bars and cables and a general form of the equilibrium matrix of two-node beam element and bar element is also derived. Using its total equilibrium matrix, a small beam-string structure is analyzed and only one independent self-stress mode is obtained. Secondly, another method, named as local analysis method, is presented where the whole structure is divided into two parts: the upper structure and the lower structure. It can also be used to obtain the initial pre-stress distribution and the zero-state geometry of the upper structure. Numerical examples are given to verify the methods.

Abstract:For the cylindrical latticed intersected three dimensional beam system reticulated megastructure with single layer latticed intersected cylindrical shell substructure, the construction of structure, form parameters and support conditions are analyzed in this paper. Geometric nonlinear mechanical model is set up with the stability analysis program developed. In connection with the characteristic of this structure, the stability and buckling styles (overall buckling and local buckling) are researched in detail. The relationship between overall buckling and local buckling is investigated through parameter analysis. Various laws of parameters are found on critical state between overall buckling and local buckling of structures with different spans, and it is showed by boundary curves of overall and local buckling. All this work will provide a reference in theory for the use of such structures.
Simplified Analysis Method of Latticed Intersected Three-Dimensional Beam System Reticulated Mega-Structure

Abstract:A simplified analysis method was studied for reticulated mega-structure in which the main-structure was latticed intersected three-dimensional beam system(LITDBS) because of the long calculating time caused by its large amount of elements and nodes.The equivalent space frame method,which considered latticed three-dimensional beam as a continuous solid three-dimensional beam and used finite element method(FEM) to analyze it,was presented.The equivalent section area and the equivalent flexural stiffness were analyzed.The equivalent tensional stiffness was deduced in detail.The equivalent disposal method of different restrict conditions of the main-structure were analyzed.It showed that the calculating time of this method was much shorter than the full FEM',its accuracy was very high by comparative analysis,and the percentages of the error of the internal forces in the main bearing elements were all kept within 5%.So it is a superior analysis method for LITDBS reticulated mega-structure.

Abstract:In the present paper, analytic discussions on the out-of-plane instability of paunch bars of beam/truss-string structures are put forward with seven basic models simplified. This is useful for a preliminary recognition of the importance of constituting a stable lower cable-bar system. Manual calculation of shape determination of lower nodes of vertical paunch bars is proposed. It is assumed that all paunch bars are vertical or perpendicular to the line connected two ends of the upper beam/truss. Hopefully the work presented in this paper could benefit the further research work and practical engineering on beam/truss-string structures.

Abstract:The computational analysis method of a hybrid structure composed of cables, bars and beams and its preliminary mechanical properties are presented in this paper. At first, based on the local analysis method, the distribution and magnitude of pre-stress of this hybrid structure is analysed using the optimal theory. Then, the optimal pre-stress distribution is obtained. The outmost ring of cable and bar has the largest pre-stress compared with the middle one and the inner one. Second, nonlinear static analysis is carried out with induction of the pre-stress in beams as self-equilibrated initial internal force. The tensegric system and pre-stress in the whole structure could not reduce the deflection dramatically. However, the pre-stress can significantly affects the distribution of the axial forces in beams. Also, linear and nonlinear dynamic analysis is conducted by taking account of the pre-stress of beams as self-equilibrated initial internal force. With the decrease of the stiffness of the upper reticulated structure the effect of pre-stress on natural frequencies of the whole structure becomes larger. The fluctuation of the internal force in the cables and bars is not very large under vertical frequently meeting earthquake load (not over 7%) and smaller under horizontal frequently meeting earthquake load. At last, buckling analysis is carried out. Comparing to single-layer reticulated shell, this type of hybrid structures has much higher limit load capacity ability.

Abstract:This paper investigates the buckling of thin-walled beams braced by horizontal knee angles, which is a new practice currently coming into use in Chinese industrial buildings with small and moderate overhead cranes of light or medium duty to improve the stability of simply supported crane runway girders. It was found that this technique increases significantly the elastic buckling capacity of thin-walled beams. The increase in elastic–plastic buckling capacity may also be as high as 40% compared with unbraced beams. Simple formulae are presented for buckling moments of the knee-braced beams. Compared with the results of finite element analysis, the proposed formulae have excellent accuracy in prediction of the critical loads of knee-braced beams under concentrated load at mid-span and uniformly distributed loads. The application of the formulae was explained through an example of a practical crane runway girder.

Abstract:Based on previous finite element(FE) analysis,this paper uses the model of infinite beam on a semi-infinite to solve the local bearing stress in the web of beams supporting overhead cranes.The solutions of an infinite beam on a semi-infinite plane,subjected to a concentrated force have already been achieved by Former Soviet Union scholars in 1930s,but their solutions were very complicated and cumbersome.This paper introduces a new and simple method,in which the Fourier transform(FT) is applied to the equilibrium equations of the beam and the compatibility conditions between the beam and the semi-infinite plane to find the their FT forms.The inverse Fourier transform is then carried out to find the final analytical solutions to the problem.Expressions for the beam deflection,bending moment and shear force on the cross-section of the beam are formulated;the stresses in the semi-infinite plane are also presented.Equivalent bearing length is compared with previous results based on FE analysis and approximate model,and good correlation between both is found.Suggestions for revising the code for design of steel structures are proposed.

Abstract:Applying structural analysis software MSC/NASTRAN,the finite element analysis of strength is done for the derrick and hoisting mechanism in the hoisting system of the 1300T floating crane under the working conditions of various combinations of loads.According to the working conditions,the stresses of derrick and the dangerous cross section of hoisting mechanism are tested and analyzed.Also,the weak sections of every part are pointed out and the improvements are proposed.

Abstract:Considering semi-rigid connections, a 3-D FEM was established to simulate the fastener-style tubular steel formwork-support and the analysis was performed together with an experimental study of the torsion stiffness of right couplers. Both the linear and nonlinear buckling techniques were employed to determine the stability of the formwork-supports. In the nonlinear analytical model, Initial imperfection, plastic behavior and large deflection response of the formwork-supports were taken into account. Numerical results indicated the linear buckling loads were higher than that obtained from the nonlinear stability analysis. Nonlinear buckling analysis was employed to calculate the stability bearing capacity for cases of different design variables, and then the results were converted into effective length coefficients that are generally used in practice. The influence factors on the stability bearing capacity were studied. It was pointed out that the effects of initial imperfection and semi-rigid connection on the stability bearing capability are important, also a bolt tightening torque of 40 N·m was found to be quite reasonable.
Spatial behavior and strengthening analysis of fabricated PC hollow slab beam bridge with hinge joints

Abstract:To ascertain the crack mechanism along the hinge joints of fabricated PC (prestressed concrete) hollow slab beam bridges and the strengthening method, a typical fabricated hollow slab beam bridge was taken as an example and an accurate three-dimensional finite element model was built by simulating the whole bridge using entity unit. The stresses in the control sections of the bridge were analysed to conclude that the main cause of longitudinal cracks along the hinge joints was the excess of transverse stress. Based on above analysis results, two schemes including adding transverse prestress steel wire system to strengthen and improve the transverse load bearing capacity of such kind of bridges were presented, and numerical analyses and comparison of the two strengthening schemes were conducted. The results show that both strengthening schemes can effectively reduce the transverse tensile stresses in the hinge joints of hollow slab beam bridges and greatly improve the integrity of the bridge. The scheme with the prestressed steel wire set in the area 25 cm from the bottom of the beam is more effective and has more advantages in durability and security.

Abstract:Aiming at the features of the articulated hollow slab beam bridges with transverse prestressed force, an assumption that regards the reinforced slab beam bridges as analogy orthotropic plate was proposed. The lateral flexural stiffness and torsional stiffness of the plate bridges per meter width can be calculated approximately as an average value of those of the solid section and the minimum hollow section. The longitudinal flexural stiffness and torsional stiffness per meter width remain the same as the original ones. The modified G-M method for calculating the strengthened bridge was proposed. Example as a typical hollow slab bridges, the lateral load distribution influence-line after strengthening bridge obtained by using modified G-M method. The numerical analysis before and after strengthening bridge by using FEM was complete to gain lateral load distribution influence-line. It shows that the values predicted by the proposed modified G-M were matched with the results by the FEM after strengthening bridge. It shows that the method strengthening articulated hollow slab beam bridges by exerting transverse prestress steel wire on them proved to be effective and the presented modified G-M theory to be right.

Abstract:The design of a 60m span and heavy duty crane beam in a structure is introduced,which is also treated as the support to the roof structure,so it is difficult to be replaced.The initial design for the beam is a truss,and final design changes to I-shape solid-wed beam.The analysis of the fatigue performance and the utilization of material shows that the truss design has obvious disadvantages and the final design could well tackle these problems.

Abstract:Based on linear elastic theory, the concrete cracking problem of link slab on simply supported beam bridge was explored and theoretical analysis of bridge link slabs were carried out. Meanwhile, the formulas for calculating the stress of link slab were deduced and the cause for continuous damage of bridge deck was quantitatively analyzed. On the base of analysis of its failure mechanism, a new type of steel-concrete composite flat link slab was proposed. The results of full-scale model tests and finite element (FE) analysis indicated that it can alter the transfer path of internal forced inside the link slab and then concrete cracking can be prevented effectively. It was found that the main factors to link slab failure were influentially descending from girder end upturning, longitudinal tensile action and girder end rotation. Furthermore, the unbonded region between girder and link slab can effectively decrease the continuous stress and then alleviate the damage to bridge deck. All those results in this paper can be used as a reference and guidance for further research and development of new type of bridge link slab and jointless bridge.

Abstract:Abstract Because of its light weight, good orientation, strong seismic performance, high degree of industrialization, and short construction period, steel structure has relatively high investment efficiency and is widely used at home and abroad. At present, steel structures have been widely used in various complex high-rise buildings. Many high-floor buildings have many changes in building shapes and large spans, and their analysis difficulty and accuracy requirements are very high. Therefore, the stability analysis of steel structures is particularly important. Under the action of strong earthquakes, the welded parts at the nodes of the assembled high-rise steel structure are prone to rigid fractures, which are the weakest parts in the entire steel structure frame, causing damage to the steel structure nodes, and severe damage can lead to the collapse of the entire frame. In view of this defect, it is necessary to pay attention to the research on the stability of the prefabricated high-rise steel structure nodes. In this paper, combined with BIM technology, taking high-rise buildings as the research object, the linear buckling analysis of the structure is carried out, and the buckling mode, buckling weak parts and buckling load of the structure are obtained. Through the analysis of these data, this article evaluated the influence of the giant beam of this structure on the structural performance.

Abstract:Abstract In order to ensure the safety and stability of the tower crane in operation, the static and dynamic characteristics of the QTZ100 tower crane in typical working conditions are analyzed by the finite element method, so as to verify the safety of its use and put forward targeted suggestions for the optimization of cranes. The results show that the equivalent stress is less than the ultimate design stress of the tower crane, and there is stress concentration in the plate connected between the upper turntable and the lifting arm. The frequency of the fully loaded motor is far from the normal operating frequency of the tower. The horizontal root displacement of the lifting arm corresponding to the peak displacement response is relatively large. The buckling factor of the tower crane is higher than the empirical value. Therefore, to meet the strength and stability requirements of the tower crane, the connection between the upper turntable and the lifting arm should be strengthened. The motor will not resonate with the tower crane when it is fully loaded, and the dynamic rigidity is poor when it works at the frequency corresponding to the peak value. The buckling factor is higher, so the stability is better.
Analysis of Influence of Tie Beam on Seismic Performance of Double Leg Thin-walled High Piers

Abstract:The double leg thin-walled pier is a common bridge pier form of continuous rigid frame bridge.The longitudinal stiffness of the high pier with a height more than 40 m is generally weak.In the design,the tie beam is usually used to reduce the calculated height of the bridge piers,and improve the stress characteristics of high pier.In this paper,the engineering background is the double leg thin-walled high piers of a typical high pier and long span continuous rigid frame bridge.A refined finite element model of the double leg thin-walled high piers is established in ABAQUS,and the influence of the reinforcement ratio,hoop reinforcement ratio of the tie beam,the stiffness ratio of the tie beam-bridge piers and the number of the tie beam on the seismic performance of high piers is analyzed.The results show that the number of the tie beam and the stiffness ratio of the tie beam-bridge pier have greater influence on the hysteretic performance of the high pier than the reinforcement ratio and hoop reinforcement ratio of the tie beam.

Abstract:Aiming at the poor rollover crashworthiness performance of thin-walled beam structures on the bus body frame side wall,a kind of equal strength cover-plated reinforcement beam structure is proposed.The dynamic response of a single cantilever square tube under lateral impact loading was simulated by software LS-DYNA,and comparative analysis was conducted on the flexural performance of different strengthening methods.The results show that in comparison with thin-walled square tube,the cover-plated reinforcement thin-walled square tube and aluminum-foam filled square tube,energy absorption performance of equal strength cover-plated reinforcement square tube was significantly increased.The overall structure fully involved in deformation,and the plastic hinge generated due to partial collapse didn't appear.This presented structure has preferable rollover crashworthiness as side wall column of bus.

Abstract:The neglect of the importance for scaffoldings as temporary structures,and the lack of study for the scaffoldings of new types are the main factors that lead the collapse accidents of scaffoldings have occurred frequently.In order to get full understanding of the bearing capacity of frame scaffolding with steel tubes that are new types and ensure the safety of those new type scaffoldings,it is necessary to conduct research scientifically about them.Based on the experimental study of the three bays-six floors full scale scaffoldings which are composed of two new type portals(MF0817,MF1017),the paper applied the stability theory of steel frames,modified the slope-deflection equation,considering the effect of semi-rigid joints,conducted theoretical analysis of the bearing capacity of the three frame scaffoldings that are constructed in different conditions,and derived the formulation of the effective length factor of vertical bars in different construction conditions.The results show that the restraint condition of vertical bars' ending has a large effect on the bearing capacity of scaffoldings,and the slope-deflection method can be adopted to get the effective length factor of vertical bars.Moreover,the results of theoretical analysis and experimental study are compared to verify the accuracy of the theoretical analysis method.
Stiffness Degradation Characteristics Destructive Testing and Finite-Element Analysis of Prestressed Concrete T-Beam

Abstract:The failure behavior of the precast prestressed concrete T girder was investigated by destructive test and finite-element analysis, and the mid-span deflection, girder stiffness and the variation of the cross section strain in the loading process were obtained, and the mechanical properties, mechanical behavior, elastic and plastic behavior and ultimate bearing capacity of T girder with large span were revealed. Furthermore, the relationship between the beam stiffness degradation, the neutral axis in cross-section, steel yielding and concrete cracking are investigated and analyzed. A method was proposed to predict the residual bearing capacity of a bridge based on the variation of the position of the cross section strain distribution and the section neutral axis, which provided a theoretical basis for predicting the stiffness detection and carrying capacity assessment of prestressed concrete beam.

Abstract:For major diameter thin-walled tube beam-columns(MDTTB) with diameter-thickness ratios exceeding 100,there exists no corresponding regulation and reference in the current design standard of steel structures.The influences of initial imperfection,slenderness ratio and unequal end moment on the stability capacity of MDTTB are investigated by using nonlinear finite element analysis.The results indicate that with the increase in diameter-thickness ratio,the stability bearing capacity of MDTTB is clearly reduced.According to the related design standard of steel structures,and on the basis of the numerical analysis results,the formulas for calculation of the stability bearing capacity of MDTTB are presented.Three tests of thin-walled steel tube beam-columns are reported.The deformation and ultimate strength from the tests are found to be in good agreement with the corresponding formula-calculated values,indicating that the proposed method is effective,reliable and convenient for design applications.
