Abstract:In view of current situation that blasting theory is not advanced and that cut angle and cut height are determined only by experiences when chimney is demolished by controlled blasting, this paper establishes a mathematical model to determine cut angle and cut height when different chimney cut shapes are adopted. The author combines an engineering example with the model to analyze and discuss the model in detail, and draws some useful conclusions.

Abstract:In the field of reinforced concrete structure demolition, efficient and safe methods are crucial for engineering progress and space optimization. Drilling and blasting, a method that precisely controls the collapse of columns by managing the explosion process, is commonly used. This creates conditions for subsequent construction or space optimization. However, research on the effect of detonation delay time on the blasting effect in the demolition of reinforced concrete columns remains limited. This paper combines the ABAQUS's CDP constitutive model and the CONWEP explosion method to establish a numerical model of the blasting effect on reinforced concrete columns, validated by drilling and blasting experiments. The findings demonstrate the model's feasibility, with numerical simulations showing satisfactory consistency with experimental results in terms of hoop damage and the volume affected by the explosion, with an error margin of 17% for the blasted column volume. The study further reveals that detonation delay time significantly affects the blasting effect, which can increase tensile damage in the far area of column blasting holes and reduce the flying speed of concrete in the intermediate area between two blasting holes. To ensure operational effectiveness, it is recommended to carefully adjust the detonation delay time during reinforced concrete column blasting operations, ensuring it remains within the optimal threshold dictated by specific conditions. For the operational parameters stipulated in this study, the optimal value is constrained not to exceed 0.8 ms. This study provides important guidance and practical application value for reinforced concrete column blasting demolition operations.

Abstract:In this paper the quickly excavating technique of rock mass by blasting under complicated surroundings is presented. Choosing rightly a type of explosive should first meet the matched principle of wave impedance between explosive and rock as most as possible, in the mean time the harmful effects induced by blasting, indexes of price and performance for explosive should be considered comprehensively. In addition the influence of proper spacing parameters, interval of ignition and tamping on rock fragmentation have been researched. The engineering practice proved that explosive and blasting parameters chosen by us in this paper is suitable. The economical, safety and reasonable level was achieved, and the construction speed of 300m(3)/d is kept. It can provide a reference to blasting in similar engineering in the future.

Abstract:This paper describes the demoliton blasting of wall water tower with thin wall under complicated circumastances. The demolition blasting scheme and blasting design of the water tower are introduced. Blasting cutting parameters are examined through principle of mechanics and dynamics. The blasting result shows that the blasting design of water tower demolition in the complicated circumstances and various safety protection measures are reasonable and feasible.

Experiments and numerical simulations on explosion have been carried out and mechanism of blast waves and calculation of blast loading have been proposed by many researchers.This paper presents the mechanism of blast waves and the interior and exterior loading effects on structures caused by blast.The existing literature and author's latest research is proposed and future research issues on blast loading calculation are pointed out for the purpose of using blast load in practical structural design.

Abstract:This paper presents a study of a 63-m-high (206 feet) RC building's failure under blast loading and subsequent column removals. The analysis covers the entire process, starting with explosive charge detonation and ending in demolition. LS-DYNA software was used for blast wave propagation and structural interaction, while SAP2000 modeled successive column removal, both focused on columns experiencing the highest loads at the bottom, using nonlinear dynamic analysis (NDA). Three explicit methods—Load blast enhanced (LBE), Arbitrary lagrangian eulerian (ALE), and Coupling—were discussed for their suitability. The LBE method, though time-efficient, faces challenges in limiting affected surface or volume. ALE confines explosive energy to designated columns and the Coupling method emerges as the most appropriate, combining ALE for initial detonation and LBE for subsequent implosion. The research distinguishes itself by exploring a novel method for safely monitoring building demolition. By employing stationary cameras positioned outside the critical collapse area and utilizing Tracker software, it segments footage into frames, tracks point displacement in each frame, and compares the results with real values, providing a comprehensive analysis. Moreover, the study's examination aligns with the actual demolition, offering insights by comparing simulation results with photographs of real damage, thereby validating the procedure. The findings show explicit analysis aligns closely with real data, while SAP2000 NDA exhibits relatively distant results, although being more time-efficient. The article also explores alternative demolition scenarios, sequentially removing three column groups from the same structure. To deepen the analysis, scenarios were created by varying the time intervals between column removals. Decreasing time intervals resulted in improved alignment between the outcomes of both programs. The global issue of buildings reaching the end of their service life and the 2023 seismic events in Turkiye have highlighted the urgent need to analyze numerical methods for the demolition of hundreds of thousands of structures with specific focus.

Blasting Study on the Lengthwise Collapse of a Tall Building with a Frame Shear Wall Structure

Abstract:The high-rise buildings which have so far been demolished by blasting in China are primarily frame shear wall structure. According to the relative position of the frame parts of the same building with shear wall portion,collapse direction options and delay time difference between succeeding initiations,empirical data of inclination angle( closing angle) for the blasting cuts,theoretical calculation methods,and criteria for reliable collapse were presented. The conclusion,that the building would collapse along its longitudinal much more difficult than the lateral collapse,was pointed out.Blasting scheme,pretreatment,essential elements of blasting cuts,blasted heights of columns,borehole parameters,blasting parameters and initiation circuit network of explosive demolition of Jindu Mansion in Jingjiang City with the longitudinal collapse were introduced. Jindu Mansion,a 11-storey building with frame-shear wall structure,must be collapsed longitudinal because of its surroundings constraints,a direction which is adverse to making the building collapse.Moreover,at each end of its longitudinal direction there was a frame-shear wall structure,which made the longitudinal collapse even more difficult. Anticipated demolition results are achieved by making a good design,optimizing blasting parameters,and taking strict technical safety measures.

Abstract:Nowadays, urban renewal is accompanied by the demolition of a large number of obsolete buildings. The pollutions caused by blasting demolition have a serious adverse impact on the environment. Soundless chemical demolition agents (SCDAs) are put forward as a green and environment–friendly demolition method and have the potential to solve the pollution problems in the blasting demolition of concrete buildings. To this end, this paper aims to investigate the key problems in reinforced concrete beam demolition with SCDAs. The tests on 18 reinforced concrete beam specimens were carried out. The fracture phenomenon and failure mechanism were analysed. The expansive rate of SCDAs was proposed as the crushing effect index to investigate the impacts of hole diameter, hole spacing, concrete strength, stirrup spacing, and stirrup diameter. Besides, the influence mechanism of the stirrups was explored in depth, in which SCDAs in the hole were considered to be constrained by the surrounding concrete, and the stirrups were considered as the enhancement to the constraint of concrete. Eventually, a new hole layout calculation method was proposed, which accorded well with the experimental results.

Abstract:Combining with the blasting test of an under-construction tunnel, this paper optimizes the overall blasting construction scheme. The optimized blasting scheme is used in the site construction test and the peak particle vibration velocity is strictly controlled under working conditions through blasting vibration monitoring to ensure the safety of surrounding buildings and structures in the construction process. The corresponding control measures are proposed to reduce the blasting vibration which brings certain guiding significance to the following construction project.

Abstract:Based on the analysis on made the impact from blasting vibration on the failure mechanism and strength of the early-age concrete,the safety criteria of blasting vibration velocity for the early-age concrete are compared herein;and then taking the blasting construction of the tunnel of a water diversion project in Shaoxing as a study case,the vibration-damping protection is made on the construction sections of 14+516～14+540 through a comprehensive method of arrangement of vibration-damping holes,selection of suitable powder-charging structure and control of the maximum charge quantity.On the basis of the analysis on the site-monitoring data,it is demonstrated that the effect of the relevant vibration-damping measure is quite obvious.
Numerical Simulation of Blast Loads and Dynamic Response of Reinforced Concrete Slab Subjected to Close-in Explosion

Abstract:In the evaluation of anti-explosion performance for significant building and protective engineering structures,a direct simulation using appropriate computational technique is very necessary,wherein the simulation precision of blast loads becomes mainly concerned problem.This paper presents a numerical simulation study on the prediction of the blast load in free air using AUTODYN software,with focus on the sensitivity of the simulated blast load to the mesh grid size and solution algorithms.The results are compared with empirical predictions and blast parameters from TM5-1300.It is found that the mesh size has a remarkable effect on peak overpressure and a certain extent effect on impulse,and the Euler-FCT algorithm in contrast with Euler-G improves the accuracy and efficiency.However,the blast loads tends to be systematically underestimated;the underestimation of blast load may be compensated by imposing a charge adjustment factor of 1.5.The dynamic response of the reinforced concrete slab under nearby explosion is then analyzed using a coupled scheme,and the full processes of the deformation and damage of RC slab such as the cracking and break-up of concrete,yield of reinforcing bars,and local perforation are observed realistically.

Abstract:Comparison was conducted in association with investigation into the building collapse induced respectively by blast loading and seismic action.The cases where rather brittle building failure occured were collected.The event tree model in the probability methodology was introduced to establish the lethality rate of building collapse.The work presented here included description of the database,classification of the collected data and statistical analysis.Preliminary probabilistic models for the lethality rate of different categories of building structures were proposed.Through combined statistical analysis of building collapse cases for brick masonry,brick concrete and reinforced concrete structures,the evaluation model of lethality rate for the current buildings and facilities to blast loading in urban areas was obtained.The dependence of the lethality rate upon the number of building stories was also examined based on the available database.Results showed that the mean value of lethality rate of building collapse increases as the number of stories increases.

Abstract:The blast with a short distance is harmful to an existing tunnel, which is the key problem in the practical projects. Dynamic analysis and weighted twin-shear strength theory were applied to develop appropriate methods for evaluating the tunnel's safety and to devise an optimal blasting scheme for nearby blasting in this paper. Because the structural response differs with differing tunnel shape, wall rock properties, and initial stress state, the safety of the tunnel in different location should be estimated respectively. Blasting dynamic analysis results are used to plot the time-course curves and the frequency spectrum of the structural response. Finally, a case study is presented to illustrate the rational benefits of the above theory and method.
PREDICTION OF DEBRIS LAUNCH VELOCITY OF REINFORCED CONCRETE SLAB SUBJECTED TO INTERNAL BLAST LOADING

Abstract:Due to the accidental explosion of a large-scale aboveground ammunition storage magazine, the dynamic response under internal blast loading, especially the size and launch velocity of debris of reinforced concrete structures, can cause huge damage to surrounding persons and buildings. Therefore, predicting accurately the debris formation and launch velocity of RC structures has become an important issue for the safety assessment of ammunition storage magazine. In this paper, a numerical model of RC slab bolted to the cubic steel box at the four ends is established with the explosive charge placed at the centre of the chamber. The numerical model adopts a three-curve concrete strength model to account for the effect of strain rate on the concrete and reinforcement dynamic strength. The air-structure coupled interaction is also considered. With the numerical model, the whole evolving process is simulated including break-up, debris formation and launching of RC slab. The simulation results are compared with experimental results, and good agreements are observed in the launch velocity and sizes of debris. It is also found that the shock wave load is responsible for the development of damage zone in the concrete material and the subsequent debris size distribution, and the gas pressure load plays an important role in the separation of crack pattern and in the subsequent throw of the debris.
Damage Mechanism Of Reinforced Concrete Slab Under Internal Blast Loading

Abstract:The damage of reinforced concrete (RC) structures resulting from internal explosion has a potential risk to the personnel and equipments inside the building because of high speed concrete fragments. Rationally identifying the damage mechanism of RC slab induced by internal explosion can result in better fortification design to withstand the blast loadings. Numerical simulations with an appropriate coupled Eulerian-Lagrangian framework are therefore carried out in the confined space using LS-DYNA, a numerical model of RC slab bolted to the steel box is established with explosive charge placed at the centre of the chamber. The sophisticated concrete damage model in conjunction with an proper element erosion scheme is adopted, taking into account the strain rate effect on the material strength. The reinforced bars are also modeled using separate steel elements. The simulation results are compared with experimental observations, and the favorable agreements are observed in terms of internal air overpressure histories, crack patterns and launching velocity of RC slab. The response process and damage mechanism of the RC slab is further reviewed. The development of damage zone in the concrete and subsequent fragment size distribution attribute to the impulsive loading, and the explosion gas loading contributes to the launching velocity of RC slab.

Abstract:This study introduces a novel poromechanical approach to analyze blast‐induced dynamic fracture in concrete considering gaseous kinetics. The objective is to establish a framework for examining the fracture mechanisms during demolition. The simulation employs finite element analysis, incorporating three‐dimensional non‐orthogonal multidirectional cracks induced by gas inflation, through which the gaseous media flows too. The study investigates the principles governing crack network development and the influence of pressurized gas using a multiphase scheme and verifies its findings experimentally. It was also emphasized that benchmark blast experimental data are essential for validating the model, for practical applications in the demolition and renovation of existing structural concrete.

Abstract:Quantitatively analyzing multidirectional shaped charge blasting energy distribution and improving the rock-fracturing efficiency have been a challenging problem in blasting and civil engineering. In this work, we carry out four groups of concrete model experiments using ultrasonic testing, comparing conventional blasting, and multidirectional shaped charge blasting. Then, the probability and statistics method is used to quantitatively analyze the blasting damage and the energy distribution. The test results show that ultrasonic testing and statistics model can quantitatively evaluate the damage law and energy distribution of blasting. By comparing with conventional blasting method, the multidirectional shaped charge blasting with V-shaped multidirectional shaped energy groove has achieved the effect of energy accumulation. It increases the distribution of energy in the rock crack district, increases the blasting damage range, and improves the rock-fracturing efficiency of blasting. The V-shaped multidirectional shaped energy groove can be used as a new approach for rock fracturing in similar projects.

Abstract:The section of Jialingjiang Road Station to Xiangjiang Road Station along Qingdao Metro Line 13 is located in Qingdao, China. All of them show obvious characteristics, being soft on the top and hard on the bottom, and the interval tunnel is faced with the problem of existing adjacent buildings. In order to ensure the smooth progress of construction, as well as minimize the damage to the buildings, a new mechanical excavation combined with a blasting construction scheme for the adjacent buildings is proposed. In this scheme, the step method is used for excavation. The upper step is in the weak stratum, and the mechanical method is therefore used for excavation; the lower step is in the hard stratum, and the drilling-and-blasting method is thus used for excavation. Using FLAC3D 5.0 finite difference software and the method based on blasting an equivalent load, the vibration velocity at adjacent buildings caused by the combined mechanical excavation and blasting scheme, as well as the traditional full-section blasting scheme, is compared and analyzed. Further, the construction parameters of the combined mechanical excavation and blasting scheme are compared and selected based on building settlement, the plastic zone of surrounding rocks, building vibration velocity and other factors. The results show that under the mechanical excavation blasting scheme, the peak particle velocity of each monitoring point decreases significantly compared with that under the full-section blasting scheme, with a maximum reduction of 61.1%, which is within the allowable range of the project, demonstrating the rationality of the new scheme. Finally, the mechanical excavation advance in the upper step is determined as 0.5 m. The optimized parameter construction effect is monitored and evaluated, the problems encountered in the project are successfully solved using the combined mechanical excavation and blasting scheme, and the expected construction period is shortened by 3 months, which shows the rationality of the blasting construction scheme proposed and its parameters, as well as the validity of the calculation results. The research results can be used as a reference for the construction scheme design of similar projects.

Abstract:This paper studies the dynamic properties, damage characteristics and failure laws of reactive powder concrete (RPC) subjected to blasts by embedded explosive. The experimental program includes tests of blast resistance carried on RPC targets and high-strength concrete (HSC) targets as control specimens by varying the depth of explosive. Experimental results show that RPC has a superior blast resistance compared to HSC characterized by smaller crater and targets integrity. In the numerical analysis, a modified constitutive model that reflects the basic mechanical properties of RPC, i.e., high strength, tensile ductility and insensitive to strain rate, was adopted by improving the strength surface, damage equation and strain rate effect based on the Kong-Fang model. The modified model was embedded in LS-DYNA software to simulate the failure mode of the RPC targets at different embedding depths of explosives and compared with the predicted results obtained from the Kong-Fang model. The simulation results predicted by the modified Kong-Fang model are suitable for the experimental results.
