Abstract:The paper experimentally investigated the effects of grain refining on the rheological response of semi-solid Al - Si alloys through chemical refining. Selected refiners included Al - 5Ti - B, K2TiF6 , K2TiF6 plus graphite and K2TiF6 plus Ti. The apparent viscosity of semi-solid Al - Si alloys was measured using Cou-ette viscometer during solidification. Samples at different solid fractions were quenched to observe the micro-structure. It was found that grain refining drastically lowered the apparent viscosity of Al - Si alloys. The effect of Al -5Ti - B was better than that of K2TiF6 The effect of K2TiF6plus graphite or Ti was better than that of K2TiF6.

Abstract:Three kinds of grain refiner Al-Ti-B(wire),Al-Ti-B(ingot),Al-Ti-C were added to the aluminum for refining experiment respectively.Their refining effecting on aluminum was compared.The mechanical properties of the refined pure aluminum were studied with changing the amount of grain refiner.The results show that when the addition amount of grain refiner is 3%,the refinement effect of Al-Ti-B(wire) is best and the refinement effect of Al-Ti-B(ingot) is better than Al-Ti-C.The addition amount of grain refiner on the refining effect has certain influence.When the addition amount from 1% to 10%,with the increase of the addition amount the size of the refined grain becomes smaller at first and then larger.At the same time,there is an optimal addition amount range.With the addition amount of grain refiner increasing,the tensile strength,elongation and hardness of aluminum increases gradually firstly and then decreased gradually.When the addition amount of grain refiner is about 8%,the tensile strength,elongation and hardness of pure aluminum reached maximum value.

Abstract:The excellent grain refinement effectiveness and good electrical conductivity is difficult to be simultaneously obtained due to the influence of both the grain boundary and excessive Ti in the usually used refiners, such as Al-5Ti-1B master alloy. In order to solve this problem, in this work, Al-Ti-B mater alloys with less or without excessive Ti but with high refinement potency TiB2 have been tried to prepare, and the grain refinement effectiveness of them and its influence on the electrical conductivity of the refined Al have been investigated. It is found that the grain refinement effectiveness of the Al-Ti-B master alloys prepared using the Al-5Ti-1B and Al-B master alloys as the starting materials at 720 degrees C is much better than those prepared using the Al-10Ti and Al-B master alloys, which is because that the high refinement potency TiB2 with TiAl3 2DC in the Al-5Ti-B can be kept in the prepared master alloys. As a result, using the prepared Al-Ti-B master alloys as the refiners, both the good grain refinement effectiveness and improved electrical conductivity of Al can be realized.

Abstract:The microstructures of Al-5Ti-1B,Al-10Ti and Al-4B master alloys were investigated by OM and XRD.The grain refining effects of these three master alloys on pure Al were also researched.The results show that Al-5Ti-1B master alloy is a composite of TiAl3,TiB2 and α-Al,Al-10Ti master alloy is comprised of TiAl3 and α-Al,the size of TiAl3 is uneven,Al-4B alloy is formed with AlB2 and α-Al.The refining efficiency of Al-5Ti-1B and Al-10Ti alloy on pure Al is fine,Al-4B alloy has little refining effect to pure Al.The refining efficiency of TiAl3 is essential,the addition of B element based on TiAl3 phase can further enhance the refining effect.

Abstract:The effects of Al-5Ti-1B grain refiner on microstructure and mechanical properties of as-cast Al-Zn-Mg-Cu alloy were studied. Results show that the Al-5Ti-1B is an efficient grain refiner of Al-Zn-Mg-Cu alloy. When the additive amount of Al-5Ti-1B grain refiner is 0.1%,the microstructure of Al-Zn-Mg-Cu alloy can be refined from coarse dendrite to equiaxed grains with average diameter 54 μm and the tensile strength and elongation are increased by 5.5% and 35.6%,respectively. With the increase of additive amount of Al-5Ti-1B grain refiner from 0.1%to 0.5%,the grains of Al-Zn-Mg-Cu alloy are further refined and the tensile strength and elongation are further improved. When the additive amount of Al-5Ti-1B grain refiner is increased to 0.5%,the grains of Al-Zn-Mg-Cu alloy are refined to equiaxed grains with average diameter 38μm and the tensile strength and elongation are improved to 313 MPa and 4.2%,respectively,which are increased by 13.8%and 48.2%compared with that of Al-Zn-Mg-Cu alloy without adding Al-5Ti-1B grain refiner.

Abstract:The grain refinement of Al-Si alloy has been studied in the paper .The results show that the [JP2]refinement of Ti and B combined refiner is better than that of single Ti , B or Zr refiner. With increasing of B content in the refiner, the refinement results are significantly improved. Using Ti , B and Zr combined refiner Zr makes grain fine with Ti/B=1,0.2; with Ti/B=5 Zr prevent gain fine. Al-5Ti-1B finer has good refinement result. For Ai-Si alloy a good refinement can be obtained by adding 4% of Al-5Ti-1B master alloy at 720 ℃ and holding time for 5～10 min.[JP]

Abstract:It is well known that the mechanical properties of commercial pure Al are influenced by size of α-Al dendrites. In the present work, Al-5Ti-0.62C-0.2Nd grain refiner was prepared by a pure molten aluminum thermal explosion reaction, and its effect on grain refinement and mechanical properties of commercial pure Al was investigated. Microstructure and phase composition show that Al-5Ti-0.62C-0.2Nd grain refiner consists of α-Al, granular TiC, lump-like TiAl3, and block-like Ti2Al20Nd. Grain-refining tests on commercial pure Al show that an Al-5Ti-0.62C-0.2Nd grain refiner has better refining performance compared with Al-5Ti-0.62C grain refiner. With addition of 0.2-wt.%-Al-5Ti-0.62C-0.2Nd grain refiner, the average grain size of commercial pure Al can be refined from roughly 2800 to 155±5 µm effectively, and it has higher resistance to grain-refinement fading. On account of the grain refinement, the tensile strength and elongation are increased by approximately 18.3% and 83.5%, respectively.

Abstract:When insulated in a maintaining furnace for a relatively long period of time,the performance of liquid alloy treated by Al-5Ti-1B deteriorated because of inoculation fade and segregation.This paper discusses how A357 alloy was refined by using Al-5Ti-1B matter alloy as a refining agent.The effects of the amount of refining agent,holding temperature and holding time were investigated.The effects of Al-5Ti-1B on grain refinement were also studied.The results indicated that Al-5Ti-1B can significantly decrease the grain size of A357 alloy and the refine function can be retained for a long time.However,segregation of Ti can occur after the alloy is steady for a long time.The Ti content at the bottom is higher than that at the top of the furnace.Ti segregation can be avoided by stirring the molten alloy periodically.

Abstract:Al5Ti4RE1B master alloy was prepared by the reaction of complex halide salts with molten aluminum and rare earth at high temperature.XRD testing,microstructure analysis and refining experiments were also conducted.The refining mechanism was studied by analyzing grain morphology and microprobing energy spectrum analysis.It was found that TiAl3 reacted with RE to form Ti2Al20RE compound and the grain refining experiments indicated that Al5Ti4RE1B had better refining performance than Al5Ti1B.The microstructure analysis and mapping results showed that rosette grains were formed after refining treatment and there was inhomogeneous distribution of titanium and rare earth appearing in a single grain.This resulted from that Ti2Al20RE would dissolve in aluminum melt,and aluminum grew in dendritic form and pushed rare earth atoms into the interdendritic region.

Abstract:Through appropriate synthesis technological conditions and content-AlTiC has the same grain refinement effect on99.7%Al as the best AlTiB in the world.Both AlTiC and AlTiB have excellent refinement effect on1070-1060-1235-3004-6063and8011alloys.When AlTiC and AlTiB were used to refine Al alloys containing Zr-Cr and Mn elements-no poison effect was detected-and furthermore Zr and Mn promote the grain refinement effect of AlTiC and AlTiB.Whether TiC can nucleate(-Al separately depends not only on how TiC was introduce into the melt but also on the contact time.When AlTiC without Al 3 Ti was used in refining commercial pure aluminum-it has certain grain refinement effect up to60min holding time.While if TiC powder was introduce into the melt-it has obvious refining effect after TiC powder was scattered uniformly in the melt.

Abstract:The chemical composition,microstructure and grain refining efficiency of Al-5Ti-1B alloy rods were investigated by ICP、OM 、SEM and XRD.Results show that the content of Fe and Si elements in Al-5Ti-1B grain refiner of SLM is higher than others.The size of TiAl3 and TiB2 agglomeration in Al-5Ti-1B grain refiner of domestic A factory are bigger than others.The comprehensive quality of Al-5Ti-1B alloy rods of KBM in Holand and domestic B factory arc the better.

Abstract:This study systematically compared the influences of yttrium (Y), boron (B), and carbon (C) on the microstructural refinement and properties of a Ti–43Al–5Nb alloy. The microstructural refinement effect in the TiAl alloy closely depends on the refiner used. The refinement effects of the three elements on colony size and lamellar thickness can be arranged as B > Y > C and Y > C > B, respectively. Moreover, a microstructure with a small grain size and ultra-fine lamellar spacing can be obtained by adding B and Y or B and C. The mechanical properties of TiAl alloy are also influenced by the refiners. TiAl alloys with proper B and Y contents exhibit favorable hot workability, tensile properties, and fracture toughness, whereas the C-containing alloy displays poor tensile properties and low fracture toughness. These results indicate that Y and B are more suitable microstructure refiners than C. This study may serve as a reference for practical alloying design.

Abstract:Al-Ti-C master alloys have been prepared with a novel production method. X-ray diffraction, SEM and EDS were used to examine the phases and microstructures of the master alloys. The master alloys have block-like Al3Ti particles and submicron size TiCx with x ranging from 0.49 to 0.78, and show excellent grain refining performance for commercially pure aluminum. Tianium carbides were observed at the crystallization centers in refined castings.
Influence of Al-Ti-B Addition on the Microstructure and Mechanical Properties of A356 Alloys

Abstract:The mechanical properties ( σ b , σ 0.2 , and δ ) and fracture behavior of tensile specimens of the refined A356 alloys were investigated as a function of the addition level of Al-Ti-B master alloy under both as-cast and T6 heat-treated conditions. The results show that as the addition level of Al-5Ti-1B master alloy increases from 0.1 wt.% to 5.0 wt.%, the mechanical properties of refined A356 alloys improve steadily and then decrease slightly under both as-cast and T6 heat-treated conditions. Also, they display excellent mechanical properties with σ b = 231.30–258.30 MPa, σ 0.2 =134.00–155.50 MPa, and δ = 8.5%–11.75% at T6 heat-treated state. The excellent mechanical properties of refined A356 alloys are ascribed to the formation of α-Al equiaxed dendrites, the improvement of eutectic structure from needle/plate-like to short-lathy/block-shaped, and the Mg 2 Si aging precipitation phase after T6 heat treatment. The fracture surface examined by SEM exhibits a mixed fracture mode of refined A356 alloys at as-cast state, while it reveals a ductile fracture mode after T6 heat treatment.
Effects of High Quality Al-5Ti-1B Alloy wire on Grain Refinement of Pure Al

Abstract:The effects of different holding time, adding temperatures and addition amount of Al-5Ti-1B alloy wire, which was prepared by electromagnetic stirring and castex process, on grain refinement of pure Al were researched. The results show that the refining efficiency of the alloy wire exhibits desirable with the holding time of 5 min. With the holding time less than 120 min, the obvious fading phenomena can not be observed. The grain size of pure Al is decreased with the increase of addition of alloy wire. The grain refining performance of Al-5Ti-1B alloy wire is satisfied with a refining temperature of 700~ 730°C, while with the refining temperature of 690°C, local grain size becomes coarsened in the pure Al and the bigger grain size in pure Al occurs when temperature reaches 740°C.

Abstract:For aluminum alloys, grain refinement is the most efficient method to improve both strength and ductility. However, this rule may not apply for the recycled Al due to the large amount of intermetallics. In this paper, both secondary dendritic arm spacing (SDAS) and intermetallics have been quantified as a function of grain refinements including traditional AlTiB and most recent Y refiners. Using U-net CNN machine learning algorithm, both Fe-rich intermetallics and eutectic Si have been successfully segmented from optical and SEM/EDS images. Different from traditional refiners, (AlTiB + Y) not only strengthens the refining ability but also reduces the percentage of harmful needle-like Fe-rich intermetallics and transforms flaky Si particles into fibrous morphology. Harvested from the comprehensive grain refiners, SDAS was reduced by 38.9%, the average equivalent diameter of eutectic Si was reduced by 37.9%, and Fe-rich intermetallics content was significantly reduced. In particular, the microstructure improved by AlTiB+ 0.05Y (0.6 wt% AlTiB + 0.3 wt%Y) resulted in an increase in elongation of the refined alloy to 3.9 ± 0.4%, which is 63.3% higher compared to the base alloy, while the UTS remained at the original 260 MPa. This paper offers a promising refining technology for the recycling and casting of Al-Si alloys.

Performance Comparison of AlTiC and AlTiB Master Alloys in Grain Refinement of Commercial and High Purity Aluminum

Abstract:For further knowledge about the refining performance of AlTiC master alloys, A15.5Ti0.25C and A16.5Ti0.5C master alloys containing high Ti and C content were prepared and used in grain refining experiments of 99.8% commercial pure aluminum(CPAl). Their performance was compared with two types of Al5Ti1B refiners whose performance was nowadays considered to be the best. These two types of master alloys show similar refining efficiency at the addition level of 0.2%. However, at the addition level of 0.5%, there still exists great performance difference between AlTiC and Al5TiB alloys in grain refinement of 99.98% and 99.995% high purity aluminum(HPAl). The growth of columnar grains is fully suppressed due to the refinement of AlTiC at the addition level of 0.5%. Also, at the same addition level, the grain refining experiments of A13Ti0.15C and A15Ti0.2C master alloys which have found initial commercial applications are conducted in the above-mentioned three types of pure aluminum. According to the experimental results, these two refiners of different compositions are both nonideal. The second phase particles extracted from each refiner were observed through TEM, while the nuclei of grains after grain refinement were observed through SEM. The results were analyzed through computation and comparison of the constitutional-supercooling parameter and the growth-restriction parameter whose values were determined by solute element in aluminum melt with different purity. Apparently, AlTiC master alloys with high content of Ti and C element have great refining potential.
Grain refinement of A356 alloy by Al–Ti–B–C master alloy and its effect on mechanical properties

Abstract:A new Al–3Ti–1B–0.2C master alloy with uniform microstructure was prepared using a melt reaction method in this study. In the master alloy, TiB2 particles exhibit hierarchical dendritic morphology, while TiC particles doped with a trace amount of B show a polyhedral morphology. The grain refining performance of the master alloy on A356 alloy has also been investigated. It is found that the addition of 0.2wt.% Al–3Ti–1B–0.2C master alloy can induce very effective grain refinement of the A356 alloy. The average grain size of α-Al is reduced to 167±8μm from about 1570μm and the grain refining efficiency does not fade obviously within 60min. Therefore, the mechanical properties of the A356 alloy have been improved obviously by the addition of the Al–3Ti–1B–0.2C master alloy, including the ultimate tensile strength, yield strength and elongation.

Effects of Al-Ti-C Refiner and Forming Processes on the Microstructure and Properties of Al-Zn-Mg-Cu Alloys

Abstract:In this paper, the refinement effect of Al-5Ti-0.2C refiner on Al-Zn-Mg-Cu alloys was first investigated, and then the effects of three forming processes, i.e., Gravity Casting (GC), Squeeze Casting (SC), and Squeeze Casting after Ultrasonic Treatment (UT-SC), on microstructure and properties of Al-Zn-Mg-Cu alloys were studied. The results show that the refining effect of Al-5Ti-0.2C refiner is obvious; first, the average grain size of the alloy decreases and then increases with the increase in Ti content from 0.15 wt.% to 0.3 wt.%. The optimal amount of added Al-5Ti-0.2C is 0.2 wt.% Ti content. The good refining effect is attributed to the formation of TiC particles and Al3Ti compounds by the refiner, which can all be the nucleus of solidification. The poor refining effect when the Ti content was more than 0.2 wt.% is due to the formation of coarse Al3Ti particles. The results of three forming processes that cast Al-Zn-Mg-Cu alloys under the addition of Al-5Ti-0.2C with 0.2 wt.% Ti content show that the mechanical properties under the UT-SC process are the best; the tensile strength in the as-cast state reaches 367 MPa, and the elongation is 3.84%. The effect of tiny TiC particles in the refiner on the microstructure and properties of Al-Zn-Mg-Cu alloys is also discussed.
