Abstract:Although weakly interacting massive particle (WIMP) scenario is very well motivated, it is not guaranteed to be the truth. It is important to keep mind open and consider other well-motivated scenarios. In this paper, we briefly review several possible non-WIMP dark matter (DM) candidates. First, we discuss details on asymmetric DM models, in which the baryon asymmetry in standard model sector is related to the asymmetry in DM sector. We discuss how DM relic abundance is determined in such models. Also we cover the possible interesting experimental signatures induced by its asymmetric nature. Then we consider ultralight DM candidates, i.e., axion and dark photon. In such scenarios, DM should be treated as a coherently oscillating background, instead of each individual particle. Searching strategies for such DM candidates is very different than those in conventional DM models. We discuss several interesting experiments looking for these ultralight particles. We also cover interesting subtleties encountered in those experiments.

Abstract:This study aims to review the early history of dark matter study, such as observational evidence from galactic rotational curves, gravitational lensing, and the cosmic microwave background, among others. The observation of the bullet clusters, which strongly supports the existence of dark matter rather than the theory of modified gravity, is discussed. The N body simulations also suggest the existence of cold non-relativistic dark matter and the existence of a universal form of the dark matter density distribution profile. We introduce a standard mechanism of thermal freeze-out for dark matter relic abundance, i.e., an explanation of how the dark matter particles that were kept in thermal equilibrium in the early stages of the universe are later unable to stay in equilibrium due to the expansion of the universe. The typical dark matter candidates are the so-called WIMPs (weakly interacting massive particles). Popular WIMP candidates include the lightest supersymmetric particles such as neutralinos. Other WIMP candidates such as the lightest T odd particles in the little Higgs models and the lightest KK (Kluza-Klein) modes in the universal extra dimension models are also discussed. Non-WIMP dark matter candidates such as axions are briefly discussed. The basic ideas and methods of dark matter detection, such as underground direct detection, which involves dark matter scattering off target nuclei, and indirect detection in space, which involves dark matter annihilation or decay in galaxies, are reviewed with a focus on recent experimental developments. For underground direct detection, we begin with the basic formulas for elastic dark matter nuclei scattering and the general features of nuclear number dependence. Three types of observables are discussed: (1) direct recoil events, (2) solar modulation of the recoil events, and (3) directional effects or the day-night differences of the events. Then, we focus on the experiments studying low-mass dark matter below 10 GeV, such as SuperCDMS (super cryogenic dark matter search) and CDEX (China dark matter experiment), among others, with a special focus on the CDEX experiment, which uses point contact germanium detectors. Experiments studying high-mass dark matter using liquid argon, such as Xenon, PandaX (particle and astrophysical xenon detector), and DarkSide are also discussed. Directional detection experiments, such as DRIFT (directional recoil identification from tracks) and MIMAC (MIcro-tpc MAtrix of Chambers), are briefly discussed. For indirect detection experiments in space, we first introduce the basic theory of dark matter signals in cosmic rays and then discuss the importance of the propagation effects of high-energy cosmic rays, such as electrons, positrons, protons, antiprotons, and heavier cosmic ray nuclei. The uncertainties originating from various sources are also discussed. We then review recent experimental results, such as that from Fermi LAT (Fermi large area telescope) and AMS-02(Alpha magnetic spectrometer 02), with a focus on the most recent dark matter particle explorer (DAMPE) experiments. As nearby sources may contribute to CRE (cosmic ray electron) structures at high energies, the recently released DAMPE results on the CRE flux, which hinted at a narrow excess at energy of 1.4 TeV, is discussed in some detail. In general, a spectral structure with a narrow width appears to reveal the space time distribution of the sources. Future perspectives of heavier cosmic-ray nuclei, such as anti-deuteron and anti-helium, are also reviewed.

Abstract:The nature of dark matter (DM) and dark energy (DE) which is supposed to constitute about 95% of the energy density of the universe is still a mystery. There is no shortage of ideas regarding the nature of both. While some candidates for DM are clearly ruled out, there is still a plethora of viable particles that fit the bill. In the context of DE, while current observations favour a cosmological constant picture, there are other competing models that are equally likely. This paper reviews the different possible candidates for DM including exotic candidates and their possible detection. This review also covers the different models for DE and the possibility of unified models for DM and DE. Keeping in mind the negative results in some of the ongoing DM detection experiments, here we also review the possible alternatives to both DM and DE (such as MOND and modifications of general relativity) and possible means of observationally distinguishing between the alternatives.

Abstract:We present a general classification of simplified models that lead to dark matter (DM) coannihilation processes of the form DM + X $\rightarrow$ SM$_1$ + SM$_2$, where X is a coannihilation partner for the DM particle and SM$_1$, SM$_2$ are Standard Model fields. Our classification also encompasses regular DM pair annihilation scenarios if DM and X are identical. Each coannhilation scenario motivates the introduction of a mediating particle M that can either belong to the Standard Model or be a new field, whereby the resulting interactions between the dark sector and the Standard Model are realized as tree-level and dimension-four couplings. We construct a basis of coannihilation models, classified by the $SU(3)_C\times SU(2)_L\times U(1)_Y$ quantum numbers of DM, X and M. Our main assumptions are that dark matter is an electrically neutral color singlet and that all new particles are either scalars, Dirac or Majorana fermions, or vectors. We illustrate how new scenarios arising from electroweak symmetry breaking effects can be connected to our electroweak symmetric simplified models. We offer a comprehensive discussion of the phenomenological features of our models, encompassing the physics of thermal freeze-out, direct and indirect detection constraints, and in particular searches at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). Many novel signatures that are not covered in current LHC searches are emphasized, and new and improved LHC analyses tackling these signatures are proposed. We discuss how the coannihilation simplified models can be used to connect results from all classes of experiments in a straightforward and transparent way. This point is illustrated with a detailed discussion of the phenomenology of a particular simplified model featuring leptoquark-mediated dark matter coannihilation.

Abstract:The nature of dark matter (DM) is one of the most relevant questions in modern astrophysics. We present a brief overview of recent results that inquire into a possible fermionic quantum nature of the DM particles, focusing mainly on the interconnection between the microphysics of the neutral fermions and the macrophysical structure of galactic halos, including their formation both in the linear and non-linear cosmological regimes. We discuss the general relativistic Ruffini-Argüelles-Rueda (RAR) model of fermionic DM in galaxies, its applications to the Milky Way, the possibility that the Galactic center harbors a DM core instead of a supermassive black hole (SMBH), the S-cluster stellar orbits with an in-depth analysis of the S2's orbit including precession, the application of the RAR model to other galaxy types (dwarf, elliptic, big elliptic and galaxy clusters), and universal galaxy relations. All the above focusing on the model parameters constraints, most relevant to the fermion mass. We also connect the RAR model fermions with particle physics DM candidates, self-interactions, and galactic observables constraints. The formation and stability of core-halo galactic structures predicted by the RAR model and their relation to warm DM cosmologies are also treated. Finally, we briefly discuss how gravitational lensing, dynamical friction, and the formation of SMBHs can also probe the DM nature.

Abstract:Astrophysical observations suggest that most of the matter in the cosmos consists of a new form that has not been observed on Earth. The nature and origin of this mysterious dark matter are among the most pressing questions in fundamental science. In this review we summarize the current state of dark matter research from two perspectives. First, we provide an overview of the leading theoretical proposals for dark matter. And second, we describe how these proposals have driven a broad and diverse global search program for dark matter involving direct laboratory searches and astrophysical observations. This review is based on a Green Paper on dark matter prepared as part of the 2020 Astroparticle Community Planning initiative undertaken by the Canadian Subatomic Physics community but has been significantly updated to reflect recent advances.

Abstract:We propose two supersymmetric Standard Models (SMs) with decaying and stable dark matter (DM) particles. To explain the SM fermion masses and mixings and have a heavy decay DM particle S, we consider the Froggatt-Nielsen mechanism by introducing an anomalous U(1)_X gauge symmetry. Around the string scale, the U(1)_X gauge symmetry is broken down to a Z_2 symmetry under which S is odd while all the SM particles are even. S obtains a vacuum expectation value around the TeV scale, and then it can three-body decay dominantly to the second/third family of the SM leptons in Model I and to the first family of the SM leptons in Model II. Choosing a benchmark point in the constrained minimal supersymmetric SM with exact R parity, we show that the lightest neutralino DM is consistent with the CDMS II experiment. Considering S three-body decay and choosing suitable parameters, we show that the PAMELA and Fermi-LAT experiments and the PAMELA and ATIC experiments can be explained in Model I and Model II, respectively.

Low Mass Dark Matter and Invisible Higgs Width in Darkon Models

Abstract:The Standard Model (SM) plus a real gauge-singlet scalar field dubbed darkon (SM+D) is the simplest model possessing a weakly interacting massive particle (WIMP) dark-matter candidate. In this model, the parameters are constrained from dark matter relic density and direct searches. The fact that interaction between darkon and SM particles is only mediated by Higgs boson exchange may lead to significant modifications to the Higgs boson properties. If the dark matter mass is smaller than a half of the Higgs boson mass, the Higgs boson can decay into a pair of darkons resulting in a large invisible branching ratio. The Higgs boson will be searched for at the LHC and may well be discovered in the near future. If a Higgs boson with a small invisible decay width will be found, the SM+D model with small dark matter mass will be in trouble. We find that by extending the SM+D to a two-Higgs-doublet model plus a darkon (THDM+D) it is possible to have a Higgs boson with a small invisible branching ratio and at the same time the dark matter can have a low mass. We also comment on other implications of this model.

I shall argue here that the structure of the standard model gives some quite concrete, compelling hints regarding what lies beyond. Taking these hints seriously, one is led to predict the existence of new types of very weakly interacting matter, stable on cosmological time scales and produced with cosmologically interesting densities--that is, ``dark matter''.

Abstract:This document a outlines a set of simplified models for dark matter and its interactions with Standard Model particles. It is intended to summarize the main characteristics that these simplified models have when applied to dark matter searches at the LHC, and to provide a number of useful expressions for reference. The list of models includes both s-channel and t-channel scenarios. For s-channel, spin-0 and spin-1 mediations are discussed, and also realizations where the Higgs particle provides a portal between the dark and visible sectors. The guiding principles underpinning the proposed simplified models are spelled out, and some suggestions for implementation are presented.© 2015 CERN for the benefit of the Authors. Supersymmetric Dark Matter - a Review

Abstract:I address the question of whether supersymmetry provides a viable candidate for the dark matter in the Universe. I review the properties of the lightest neutralino as a candidate for solving the dark matter problem. I discuss the neutralino's phenomenological and cosmological properties, and constraints from present and future experiments. In the minimal supersymmetric model, the neutralino mass has been experimentally excluded below some $20$ GeV, and is not expected to be significantly larger than about $150$ GeV. I identify a gaugino-like neutralino as the most natural dark matter candidate for a plausible range of parameters. The requirement that the lightest neutralino be the dominant matter component in the flat Universe provides non-trivial restrictions on other parameters of the model, in particular on the masses of the sfermions. Next, I study the consequences of adopting further grand unification assumptions. In both scenarios I find sfermion masses most likely beyond the reach of LEP 200 and the Tevatron but well within the discovery potential of the SSC and the LHC. I also comment on the effects of relaxing grand unification assumptions. Finally, I briefly outline prospects for the neutralino dark matter searches.

Abstract:Dark sector, constituting about 95% of the Universe, remains the subject of numerous studies. There are lots of models dealing with the cause of the effects assigned to "dark matter" and "dark energy". This brief review is devoted to the very recent theoretical advances in these areas: only to the advances achieved in the last few years. For example, in section devoted to particle dark matter we overview recent publications on sterile neutrinos, self-interacting dark matter, dibarions (hexaquarks), dark matter from primordial "bubbles", primordial black holes as dark matter, axions escaping from neutron stars, and dark and usual matter interacting via the fifth dimension. We also overview the second flavor of hydrogen atoms: their existence was proven by analyzing atomic experiments and is also evidenced by the latest astrophysical observations of the 21 cm spectral line from the early Universe. While discussing non-particle models of the cause of dark matter effects, we refer to modified Newtonian dynamics and modifications of the strong equivalence principles. We also consider exotic compact objects, primordial black holes, and retardation effects. Finally, we review recent studies on the cause of "dark energy effects". Specifically, we cover two disputes that arose in 2019 and 2020 on whether the observations of supernovas, previously interpreted as the proof of the existence of dark energy, could have alternative explanations. Besides, we note a study of 2021, where dark energy is substituted by a new hypothetical type of dark matter having a magnetic-type interaction. We also refer to the recent model of a system of nonrelativistic neutral gravitating particles providing an alternative explanation of the entire dynamics of the Universe expansion – without introducing dark energy or new gravitational degrees of freedom.

Abstract:We review theories of Asymmetric Dark Matter (ADM), their cosmological implications and detection. While there are many models of ADM in the literature, our review of existing models will center on highlighting the few common features and important mechanisms for generation and transfer of the matter-anti-matter asymmetry between dark and visible sectors. We also survey ADM hidden sectors, the calculation of the relic abundance for ADM, and how the DM asymmetry may be erased at late times through oscillations. We consider cosmological constraints on ADM from the cosmic microwave background, neutron stars, the Sun, and brown and white dwarves. Lastly, we review indirect and direct detection methods for ADM, collider signatures, and constraints.

Abstract:In the General Next-to-Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model (GNMSSM), singlet particles may form a secluded sector of dark matter (DM), in which Singlino-like DM could achieve the observed relic abundance through various channels such as $\tilde{\chi}_1^0 \tilde{\chi}_1^0 \to h_s h_s, A_s A_s, h_s A_s$, where $h_s$ and $A_s$ represent singlet-dominated CP-even and CP-odd Higgs bosons. We provide analytical formulas for both the spin-independent and spin-dependent cross sections of Singlino DM scattering with nucleons, illustrating their dependence on the model's parameters in a clear manner. We also present analytic expressions for the annihilation cross sections of these three important channels. Based on these preparations, we conducted Bayesian analyses of the GNMSSM and concluded that the theory significantly favored Singlino-dominated DM over Bino-like DM across a much broader range of parameters. The combined results from our numerical analyses and the formulas distinctly highlight crucial aspects of DM physics within the GNMSSM.

Abstract:We consider dark matter in a minimal extension of the Standard Model (SM) which breaks electroweak symmetry dynamically and leads to a complete unification of the SM and technicolor coupling constants. The unification scale is determined to be $M_{\rm U} \approx 2.2 \times 10^{15}$ GeV and the unified coupling $\alpha_{\rm U} \approx 0.0304$. Moreover, unification strongly suggest that the technicolor sector of the model must become strong at the scale of ${\cal O}$(TeV). The model also contains a tightly constrained sector of mixing neutral fields stabilized by a discrete symmetry. We find the lightest of these states can be DM with a mass in the range $m_{\rm DM} \approx 30-800$ GeV. We find a large set of parameters that satisfy all available constraints from colliders and from dark matter search experiments. However, most of the available parameter space is within the reach of the next generation of DM search experiments. The model is also sensitive to a modest improvement in the measurement of the precision electroweak parameters.
