Abstract:Recently a new class of continued fraction algorithms, the )-expansions, was introduced in Kraaikamp and Langeveld (J Math Anal Appl 454(1):106–126, 2017) for each , and . Each of these continued fraction algorithms has only finitely many possible digits. These -expansions 'behave' very different from many other (classical) continued fraction algorithms; see also Chen and Kraaikamp (Matching of orbits of certain n -expansions with a finite set of digits (2022). To appear in Tohoku Math. J arXiv:2209.08882), de Jonge and Kraaikamp (Integers 23:17, 2023), de Jonge et al. (Monatsh Math 198(1):79–119, 2022), Nakada (Tokyo J Math 4(2):399–426, 1981) for examples and results. In this paper we will show that when all digits in the digit set are co-prime with N , which occurs in specified intervals of the parameter space, something extraordinary happens. Rational numbers and certain quadratic irrationals will not have a periodic expansion. Furthermore, there are no matching intervals in these regions. This contrasts sharply with the regular continued fraction and more classical parameterised continued fraction algorithms, for which often matching is shown to hold for almost every parameter. On the other hand, for small enough, all rationals have an eventually periodic expansion with period 1. This happens for all when . We also find infinitely many matching intervals for , as well as rationals that are not contained in any matching interval.

Abstract:We give an exponential upper bound on the probabilitywith which the denominator of the $n$th convergent in the regular continued fraction expansion stays away from the mean $\frac{n\pi^2}{12\log2}$. The exponential rate is best possible, given by an analytic function related to the dimension spectrum of Lyapunov exponents for the Gauss transformation.

Abstract:We show that for each positive integer $a$ there exist only finitely many prime numbers $p$ such that $a$ appears an odd number of times in the period of continued fraction of $\sqrt{p}$ or $\sqrt{2p}$. We also prove that if $p$ is a prime number and $D=p$ or $2p$ is such that the length of the period of continued fraction expansion of $\sqrt{D}$ is divisible by $4$, then $1$ appears as a partial quotient in the continued fraction of $\sqrt{D}$. Furthermore, we give an upper bound for the period length of continued fraction expansion of $\sqrt{D}$, where $D$ is a positive non-square, and factorize some family of polynomials with integral coefficients connected with continued fractions of square roots of positive integers. These results answer several questions recently posed by Miska and Ulas.

Abstract:In this paper we establish properties of independence for the continued fraction expansions of two algebraic numbers. Roughly speaking, if the continued fraction expansions of two irrational algebraic numbers have the same long sub-word, then the two continued fraction expansions have the same tails. If the two expansions have mirror symmetry long sub-words, then both the two algebraic numbers are quadratic. Applying the above results, we prove a theorem analogous to the Roth's theorem about approximation by algebraic numbers.

Abstract:In this paper, we study the elements of the continued fractions of √Q and (-1 + √4Q +1)/2 (Q € ℕ). We prove that if the period length of continued fraction of (-1 + √4Q + 1)/2 is even, then the middle element is odd (see Theorem 1.4 below), a phenomenon observed first by Arnold [2]. We obtain an analogue theorem for the continued fraction of √Q (see Theorem 1.6 below). We also give the parametrization of positive integers Q such that continued fractions of √Q (respectively, (-1 + √1+4Q)/2) has period of length dividing T, where T is an arbitrary positive integer, which generalize Theorem 3 of Arnold [1]. We explicitly describe the set of positive integers Q such that the continued fraction of √Q has period length equal to 3 or 4.

Abstract:If $d$ is not a perfect square, we define $T(d)$ as the length of the minimal period of the simple continued fraction expansion for $\sqrt{d}$. Otherwise, we put $T(d) = 0$. In the recent paper (2024), F.Battistoni, L.Grenié and G.Molteni established (in particular) an upper bound for the second moment of $T(d)$ over the segment $x<d\leqslant 2x$. As a corollary, they derived a new upper estimate for the quantity of numbers $d$ such that $T(d)>\alpha\sqrt{x}$. In this paper, we improve slightly this result of three authors. In this version, we improve the estimate of the remainder term in the main asymptotic formula, correct some misprints and add an important remark made by F.Battistoni, L.Grenié and G.Molteni. This remark concerns the explicit value of the constant in the main term of asymptotics.

Abstract:In this paper we present a family of continued fraction expansions for $e^n$, with $n\ge 1$, with a simple expression having partial denominators given by arithmetic progressions. We give an estimate for the convergence speed showing that the convergence is faster than the corresponding regular continued fractions. Moreover, we prove that the continued fractions for $e^n$ given in this paper are special cases of continued fraction expansions, different from the standard ones, of the confluent hypergeometric function, or equivalently, of the incomplete gamma function. In addition, using the same method we give a related family of continued fraction expansions of $e^{\ell/n}$ for positive integers $1\leq\ell< n $ that contains the case of integral exponent as a limit case.

Abstract:$p$-adic continued fractions, as an extension of the classical concept of classical continued fractions to the realm of $p$-adic numbers, offering a novel perspective on number representation and approximation. While numerous $p$-adic continued fraction expansion algorithms have been proposed by the researchers, the establishment of several excellent properties, such as the Lagrange Theorem for classic continued fractions, which indicates that every quadratic irrationals can be expanded periodically, remains elusive. In this paper, we present several new algorithms that can be viewed as refinements of the existing $p$-adic continued fraction algorithms. We give an upper bound of the length of partial quotients when expanding rational numbers, and prove that for small primes $p$, our algorithm can generate periodic continued fraction expansions for all quadratic irrationals. As confirmed through experimentation, one of our algorithms can be viewed as the best $p$-adic algorithm available to date. Furthermore, we provide an approach to establish a $p$-adic continued fraction expansion algorithm that could generate periodic expansions for all quadratic irrationals in $\mathbb{Q}_p$ for a given prime $p$.

On Convergents of Proper Continued Fractions

Abstract:Proper continued fractions are generalized continued fractions with positive integer numerators $a_i$ and integer denominators with $b_i\geq a_i$. In this paper we study the strength of approximation of irrational numbers to their convergents and classify which pairs of integers $p,q$ yield a convergent $p/q$ to some irrational $x$. Notably, we reduce the problem to finding convergence only of index one and two. We completely classify the possible choices for convergents of odd index and provide a near-complete classification for even index. We furthermore propose a natural two-dimensional generalization of the classical Gauss map as a method for dynamically generating all possible expansions and establish ergodicity of this map.

Abstract:We treat three recurrences involving square roots, the first of which arises from an infinite simple radical expansion for the Golden mean, whose precise convergence rate was made famous by Richard Bruce Paris in 1987. A never-before-seen proof of an important formula is given. The other recurrences are non-exponential yet equally interesting. Asymptotic series developed for each of these two examples feature a constant, dependent on the initial condition but otherwise intrinsic to the function at hand.

Real convergence and periodicity of $p$-adic continued fractions

Abstract:Continued fractions have been generalized over the field of $p$-adic numbers, where it is still not known an analogue of the famous Lagrange's Theorem. In general, the periodicity of $p$-adic continued fractions is well studied and addressed as a hard problem. In this paper, we show a strong connection between periodic $p$--adic continued fractions and the convergence to real quadratic irrationals. In particular, in the first part we prove that the convergence in $\mathbb{R}$ is a necessary condition for the periodicity of the continued fractions of a quadratic irrational in $\mathbb{Q}_p$. Moreover, we leave several conjectures on the converse, supported by experimental computations. In the second part of the paper, we exploit these results to develop a probabilistic argument for the non-periodicity of Browkin's $p$-adic continued fractions. The probabilistic results are conditioned under the assumption of uniform distribution of the $p$-adic digits of a quadratic irrational, that holds for almost all $p$-adic numbers.

Abstract:We present a characterization of the algebraic integers with continued fraction expansions of the form $[a_0, \overline{a_1, \ldots, a_n, s}]$, where $(a_1, \ldots, a_n)$ is a palindrome and $s \in \mathbb{N}_{\geq 1}$. In particular, we focus on the special case where $(a_1, \ldots, a_n) = (m, \ldots, m)$, providing a detailed characterizations of the corresponding algebraic integers and $s$ in terms of Fibonacci polynomials. Then, we derive new expansions of square roots of integers with these periods, given $m$ and $n$. Moreover, we explicitly determine the fundamental solutions of both positive and negative Pell's equations corresponding to this family of integers.

Abstract:Multidimensional continued fractions generalize classical continued fractions with the aim of providing periodic representations of algebraic irrationalities by means of integer sequences. However, there does not exist any algorithm that provides a periodic multidimensional continued fraction when algebraic irrationalities are given as inputs. In this paper, we provide a characterization for periodicity of Jacobi--Perron algorithm by means of linear recurrence sequences. In particular, we prove that partial quotients of a multidimensional continued fraction are periodic if and only if numerators and denominators of convergents are linear recurrence sequences, generalizing similar results that hold for classical continued fractions.
