Abstract:Let $\beta > 1$ be a real number and $x \in [0,1)$ be an irrational number. We denote by $k_n(x)$ the exact number of partial quotients in the continued fraction expansion of $x$ given by the first $n$ digits in the $\beta$-expansion of $x$ ($n \in \mathbb{N}$). It is known that $k_n(x)/n$ converges to $(6\log2\log\beta)/\pi^2$ almost everywhere in the sense of Lebesgue measure. In this paper, we improve this result by proving that the Lebesgue measure of the set of $x \in [0,1)$ for which $k_n(x)/n$ deviates away from $(6\log2\log\beta)/\pi^2$ decays to 0 exponentially as $n$ tends to $\infty$, which generalizes the result of Faivre \cite{lesFai97} from $\beta = 10$ to any $\beta >1$. Moreover, we also discuss which of the $\beta$-expansion and continued fraction expansion yields the better approximations of real numbers.
On new fractal phenomena connected with infinite linear IFS

Abstract:We establish several new fractal and number theoretical phenomena connected with expansions which are generated by infinite linear iterated function systems. First of all we show that the systems $\Phi$ of cylinders of generalized Lüroth expansions are, generally speaking, not faithful for the Hausdorff dimension calculation. Using Yuval Peres' approach, we prove sufficient conditions for the non-faithfulness of such families of cylinders. On the other hand, rather general sufficient conditions for the faithfulness of such covering systems are also found. As a corollary of our main results, we obtain the non-faithfullness of the family of cylinders generated by the classical Lüroth expansion. Possible infinite entropy of the stochastic vector $Q_\infty$ which determines the metric relations for partitions of the generalized Lüroth expansions, possible non-faithfulness of the family $\Phi(Q_\infty)$ and the absence of general formulae for the calculation of the Hausdorff dimension even for probability measures with independent identically distributed symbols of generalized Lüroth expansions are all facts that do not allow to apply usual probabilistic methods, as well as methods of dynamical systems to study fractal properties of corresponding subsets of non-normal numbers. Despite of the above mentioned difficulties, we develop new approach to the study of subsets of $Q_\infty$-essentially non-normal numbers and prove (without any additional restrictions on the stochastic vector $Q_{\infty}$) that this set is superfractal. This result answers the open problem mentioned in \cite{AKNT2} and completes the metric, dimensional and topological classification of real numbers via the asymptotic behaviour of frequencies their digits in the generalized Lüroth expansion.

On Convergents of Proper Continued Fractions

Abstract:Proper continued fractions are generalized continued fractions with positive integer numerators $a_i$ and integer denominators with $b_i\geq a_i$. In this paper we study the strength of approximation of irrational numbers to their convergents and classify which pairs of integers $p,q$ yield a convergent $p/q$ to some irrational $x$. Notably, we reduce the problem to finding convergence only of index one and two. We completely classify the possible choices for convergents of odd index and provide a near-complete classification for even index. We furthermore propose a natural two-dimensional generalization of the classical Gauss map as a method for dynamically generating all possible expansions and establish ergodicity of this map.

Abstract:In this paper we establish properties of independence for the continued fraction expansions of two algebraic numbers. Roughly speaking, if the continued fraction expansions of two irrational algebraic numbers have the same long sub-word, then the two continued fraction expansions have the same tails. If the two expansions have mirror symmetry long sub-words, then both the two algebraic numbers are quadratic. Applying the above results, we prove a theorem analogous to the Roth's theorem about approximation by algebraic numbers.

Abstract:Let x is an element of [0, 1) and [a(1)(x), a(2)(x),...] be the continued fraction expansion of x. For any n >= 1, write S-n(x) = Sigma(n)(k=1) a(k)(x). Khintchine (1935 Compos. Math. 1 361-82) proved that S-n(x)/n log n converges in measure to 1/log 2 with respect to L-1, where L-1 denotes the one dimensional Lebesgue measure. Philipp (1988 Monatsh. Math. 105 195-206) showed that there is not a reasonable normalizing sequence such that a strong law of large numbers is satisfied. In this paper, we show that for any alpha >= 0, the setE(alpha) = {x is an element of [0, 1): lim(n -> 8) S-n(x)/n log n = alpha}is of Hausdorff dimension 1. Furthermore, we prove that the Hausdorff dimension of the set consisting of reals whose sums of partial quotients grow at a given polynomial rate is 1.

Abstract:Recently a new class of continued fraction algorithms, the )-expansions, was introduced in Kraaikamp and Langeveld (J Math Anal Appl 454(1):106–126, 2017) for each , and . Each of these continued fraction algorithms has only finitely many possible digits. These -expansions 'behave' very different from many other (classical) continued fraction algorithms; see also Chen and Kraaikamp (Matching of orbits of certain n -expansions with a finite set of digits (2022). To appear in Tohoku Math. J arXiv:2209.08882), de Jonge and Kraaikamp (Integers 23:17, 2023), de Jonge et al. (Monatsh Math 198(1):79–119, 2022), Nakada (Tokyo J Math 4(2):399–426, 1981) for examples and results. In this paper we will show that when all digits in the digit set are co-prime with N , which occurs in specified intervals of the parameter space, something extraordinary happens. Rational numbers and certain quadratic irrationals will not have a periodic expansion. Furthermore, there are no matching intervals in these regions. This contrasts sharply with the regular continued fraction and more classical parameterised continued fraction algorithms, for which often matching is shown to hold for almost every parameter. On the other hand, for small enough, all rationals have an eventually periodic expansion with period 1. This happens for all when . We also find infinitely many matching intervals for , as well as rationals that are not contained in any matching interval.

On the rate of convergence of continued fraction statistics of random rationals

Abstract:We show that the statistics of the continued fraction expansion of a randomly chosen rational in the unit interval, with a fixed large denominator $q$, approaches the Gauss-Kuzmin statistics with polynomial rate in $q$. This improves on previous results giving the convergence without rate. As an application of this effective rate of convergence, we show that the statistics of a randomly chosen rational in the unit interval, with a fixed large denominator $q$ and prime numerator, also approaches the Gauss-Kuzmin statistics. Our results are obtained as applications of improved non-escape of mass and equidistribution statements for the geodesic flow on the space $SL_2(\mathbb{R})/SL_2(\mathbb{Z})$.

Abstract:We give an exponential upper bound on the probabilitywith which the denominator of the $n$th convergent in the regular continued fraction expansion stays away from the mean $\frac{n\pi^2}{12\log2}$. The exponential rate is best possible, given by an analytic function related to the dimension spectrum of Lyapunov exponents for the Gauss transformation.

Abstract:Adler, Keane, and Smorodinsky showed that if one concatenates the finite continued fraction expansions of the sequence of rationals \[ \frac{1}{2}, \frac{1}{3}, \frac{2}{3}, \frac{1}{4}, \frac{2}{4}, \frac{3}{4}, \frac{1}{5}, \cdots \] into an infinite continued fraction expansion, then this new number is normal with respect to the continued fraction expansion. We show a variety of new constructions of continued fraction normal numbers, including one generated by the subsequence of rationals with prime numerators and denominators: \[ \frac{2}{3}, \frac{2}{5}, \frac{3}{5}, \frac{2}{7}, \frac{3}{7}, \frac{5}{7},\cdots. \]

Abstract:$p$-adic continued fractions, as an extension of the classical concept of classical continued fractions to the realm of $p$-adic numbers, offering a novel perspective on number representation and approximation. While numerous $p$-adic continued fraction expansion algorithms have been proposed by the researchers, the establishment of several excellent properties, such as the Lagrange Theorem for classic continued fractions, which indicates that every quadratic irrationals can be expanded periodically, remains elusive. In this paper, we present several new algorithms that can be viewed as refinements of the existing $p$-adic continued fraction algorithms. We give an upper bound of the length of partial quotients when expanding rational numbers, and prove that for small primes $p$, our algorithm can generate periodic continued fraction expansions for all quadratic irrationals. As confirmed through experimentation, one of our algorithms can be viewed as the best $p$-adic algorithm available to date. Furthermore, we provide an approach to establish a $p$-adic continued fraction expansion algorithm that could generate periodic expansions for all quadratic irrationals in $\mathbb{Q}_p$ for a given prime $p$.

Abstract:For any real number $x in [0,1)$, we denote by $q_n(x)$ the denominator of the $n$-th convergent of the continued fraction expansion of $x$ $(n in mathbb{N})$. It is well-known that the Lebesgue measure of the set of points $x in [0,1)$ for which $log q_n(x)/n$ deviates away from $pi^2/(12log2)$ decays to zero as $n$ tends to infinity. In this paper, we study the rate of this decay by giving an upper bound and a lower bound. What is interesting is that the upper bound is closely related to the Hausdorff dimensions of the level sets for $log q_n(x)/n$. As a consequence, we obtain a large deviation type result for $log q_n(x)/n$, which indicates that the rate of this decay is exponential.

Abstract:Bescovitch considered the Hausdorff dimensions of sets related to the sum of digits of real numbers represented in the dyadic expansions. In this paper, we provide an analogy for continued fraction expansions over the field of formal Laurent series. We also calculate the Hausdorff dimensions of sets of Laurent series which have given polynomial or exponential approximation orders. Such approximations converge faster than those of almost all Laurent series (with respect to the Haar measure).
