Abstract:CO2 has many attractive physical and chemical properties under supercritical state,and it is considered as a kind of green solvent for its non-toxicity,clean and easy obtained.In recent years,studies related to phase behavior and materials solubility in supercritical CO2 (SC-CO2) have been paid more attention widely.A relative developing technology of supercritical fluid extraction (SFE) draws great attention in many fields.This paper reviews broad studies using SC-CO2 to remove contaminants such as PAHs,PCBs and heavy metals from soil.According to the efficiency of SFE,the factors including temperature,pressure and cosolvent were discussed.The authors finally pointed out the advantages and drawbacks of SFE while comparing with other soil remediation approach,and also discussed the prospect of SFE and feasible application in soil remediation in the future.

Abstract:The properties of the supercritical fluid near the critical point can be changed by varying the pressure and temperature, allowing selective and faster extraction. Supercritical fluids exhibit liquid-like density and gas – like viscosity & diffusion coefficients and can penetrate more into the solid matrix inaccessible to liquids due to negligible surface tension and viscosity. They are suitable as a substitute for organic solvents in a range of industrial and laboratory processes. These properties of supercritical fluids are well suited for the extraction of solutes, from various plants, fruits, flowers, seeds, leaves, which cannot be easily extracted using conventional extraction processes. In view of above mentioned advantages, supercritical fluid extraction is becoming increasingly popular in many industries such as petroleum, chemical, food, and perfumery. Supercritical fluids are also used for the extraction of metal ions from aqueous solutions and solid and liquid matrices. This review paper provides a concise review of the applications of supercritical fluids from the perspective of feed materials, type of supercritical fluids, co solvents and modifiers used, nature of work, operating conditions, findings, limitations of the work done and scope for further research. The application of supercritical fluids in extraction and purification of various natural extracts and others, using CO2 accounts for more than 90% of the published research in the field of supercritical fluid technology. Other supercritical fluids being used are propane, hexane and butane. Carbon dioxide is a relatively non-polar solvent but has some limited affinity with polar molecules due to its large molecular quadrupole. Co-solvents and modifiers are often be added to improve the solubility of polar molecules. On addition of various co solvents and modifier such as isopropyl alcohol and ethanol, n-hexane, heptane, pentane, toluene, methanol, acetone, formic acid with ammonium formate in methanol etc enhances the performance of supercritical extraction process. Despite this, the status of supercritical fluid technology commercialization is less than satisfactory. A review studies revealed that most of the published research is at laboratory scale with little or no information on scale up and design strategies.

Abstract:The applications of supercritical fluid in micro-powder formation represent a new area in recent years. The status of research, major achievements and further developing in the research of micro- powder formation with supercritical fluids were reviewed. Some new methods and processes developed recently were introduced, which include methods of rapid expansion of supercritical solutions (RESS), gas antisolvent solution (GAS), precipitation with a compressed fluid antisolvent (PCA), supercritical retrograde crystallization (SRC), supercritical fluid impregnation (SFI), supercritical fluids dry (SCFD) and chemical synthesis of supercritical fluids, etc. This paper analyzed the principles, features, engineering feasibility, application prospect, present level and existing problems, and the key problems needed to solve in further developing on the new methods.

Abstract:The present status of the research and application of sub-critical water extraction (SCWE) was reviewed in this paper. Special emphasis were given on the principle, special features and application of SCWE to the sample pretreatment in environmental analysis. As compared with those conventional methods used in sample pretreatment, no organic solvent was used in SCWE, thus causing only slight contamination to environment. Hence, SCWE was called as a green, environmental protective technique. Reliability on its extractability, recovery and precision was also discussed. In addition, SCWE showed its special features in the selective extraction of polycylic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) which are the main organic pollutants (22 ref. cited).

Abstract:Soil contamination is one of the major sustainable development issues which requires increasing efforts from multidisciplinary collaborations. In recent years, supercritical fluid remediation has been proposed as one “green technology” that is suitable with various types of contaminants without destroying the soil nature. Supercritical fluid process employs the high solubility and zero surface tension of supercritical states as well as the large solubility variations in the supercritical region for high efficiency separation. In this analysis, characteristics of soil contaminants in representative “matrix” conditions and related effects on remediation process with supercritical fluid technology are analyzed. Mechanisms and procedures of supercritical remediation technology are summarized and compared for different contaminants. Operation conditions, flow design, processing time and the entrainer applications in supercritical fluid remediation systems are shown to act more as coupled parameter groups rather than single-parameter controlled system. From a summary of existing remediation prototypes, a remediation efficiency around 80 % were shown. It is recommended that large-scale remediation trials be operated and optimized soon.

It has attracted considerable interest in food, pharmaceuticals, chromatography, and catalysis fields. When supercritical CO2 is integrated into microfluidic systems, it offers several advantages compared to conventional macro-scale supercritical reactors. These include optical transparency, small volume, rapid reaction, and precise manipulation of fluids, making microfluidics a versatile tool for process optimization and fundamental studies of extraction and reaction kinetics in supercritical CO2 applications. Moreover, the small length scale of microfluidics allows for the production of uniform nanoparticles with reduced particle size, beneficial for nanomaterial synthesis. In this perspective, we review microfluidic investigations involving supercritical CO2, with a particular focus on three primary applications, namely, solvent extraction, nanoparticle synthesis, and chemical reactions. We provide a summary of the experimental innovations, key mechanisms, and principle findings from these microfluidic studies, aiming to spark further interest. Finally, we conclude this review with some discussion on the future perspectives in this field.

Abstract:Supercritical microemulsions (reverse micelle) which improves the solvent properties of supercritical fluid greatly is a hot topic in the research of supercritical fluid technology. The solubilization behavior can be manipulated easily by choosing appropriate surfactants and controlling the operating conditions. As a new green solvent, it has large potential applications in many fields, such as chemical reactions, material preparations and extraction separations. This article provides information of the conceptions of supercritical microemulsions (reverse micelle) system and gives an overview of thermodynamics characteristics, selection of surfactants, phase behavior, calculation of hydrodynamic sizes and interdroplets interactions. The applications in these fields are also reviewed.

Abstract:Reprocessing of used nuclear fuel and treatment of nuclear waste are important issues for the sustainable development of nuclear energy. It is necessary to develop novel nuclear waste treatment technologies to meet the goal of minimizing the secondary liquid waste. Supercritical fluids are considered green solvents in chemical engineering process. It gains growing interest to treat nuclear waste using supercritical fluid extraction recently, because it can greatly decrease the secondary liquid waste with high radioactivity. During the past two decades, extraction of actinides and lanthanides by supercritical fluid has been intensively studied in some countries, and many important progresses have been made. However, the prospect of industrial application of supercritical fluid extraction technology in reprocessing of used nuclear fuel and treatment of nuclear waste is still unclear. In this paper, extraction of actinides and lanthanides from various matrixes or from their oxides by supercritical fluid including the experimental results, extraction mechanism and kinetic process was reviewed. The engineering demonstration projects were introduced. The trend of industrial application of supercritical fluid extraction technology in nuclear waste management was also discussed.
