Abstract:The current review provides an overview of the recent applications of supercritical fluid extraction (SFE) in nutraceutical industries including recovery of carotenoids, phenolic compounds, lipids, flavor and fragrance, and decaffeination of tea and coffee. The key parameters affecting SFE are also discussed with focuses on pretreatment, temperature and pressure, flow rate, extraction time, and cosolvent/modifier. Supercritical fluid extraction (SFE) is an eco‐friendly technology that has attracted a great amount of attention in the food and nutraceutical industries due to its considerable benefits over conventional techniques. It has high selectivity and can be employed to extract heat sensitive, easily oxidized compounds with high efficiency. Less organic solvent is used during extraction, leaving no toxic residues in the product. With these advantages, SFE has been widely applied in bioactive compound extraction from natural plant materials or by‐products. This review summarizes the recent application of SFE in nutraceutical industries including recovery of carotenoids, phenolic compounds, lipids, flavor and fragrance, and decaffeination of tea and coffee. The key parameters affecting SFE are also discussed with focuses on pretreatment, temperature and pressure, flow rate, extraction time, and cosolvent/modifier. Overall, this review builds a comprehensive picture of SFE application in the nutraceutical industry. It is anticipated that this article can provide useful information for researchers to pursue more applications of this technology in the food and nutraceutical industries.

Abstract:Purification of eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA)-and docosahexenoic acid (DHA)-ethyl esters (EE) from fish oil ethyl esters by supercritical fluid chromatography(SFC) with carbon dioxide as mobile phase was studied. Reversed stationary phase (C18) and normal stationary phase (silica) were used respectively to find out the operating conditions suitable to enhance the purity and yield. The separation mechanism and efficiency of SFC using C18 and silica as stationary phase respectively were compared and discussed. It was proposed that a combination of SFC with C18 and silica as stationary phase respectively will be an effective way to improve the purity and yield of EPA-EE and DHA-EE.

Abstract:Supercritical CO2 extraction technology uses supercritical CO2 fluid as extractant to extract and separate effective components from plants from liquid or solid. At present, CO2 is widely used in supercritical fluid, with a critical temperature of 31.265 °C and a critical pressure of 7.18 MPa. The critical conditions are easy to reach. In supercritical state, the density of CO2 fluid is very sensitive to the changes of temperature and pressure, The widely used separation technologies can be divided into two types: membrane separation and traditional separation. The traditional separation methods can be divided into steam distillation, sublimation, cold soaking, precipitation, percolation, decocting method and Soxhlet extraction, etc. These separation methods have certain limitations. In this paper, SFE technology is combined with modern analytical techniques, such as gas chromatography, high performance liquid chromatography, thin layer chromatography, gas chromatography-mass spectrometry, liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry, etc., so that the component analysis can be carried out more efficiently and quickly. Because of the above advantages, SFE is especially beneficial to the extraction of effective components in traditional Chinese medicine and its preparations.

Abstract:The present review considers some physicochemical properties of fluid mixtures that are of importance for fluid extraction and supercitical fluid chromatography (SFC). Firstly, the important types of phase diagrams are treated, the occurrence of solid phases also being considered in some simple cases. Specific examples are given of mixtures of a highly volatile component I (e.g. CO2, C2H6) with a relatively involatile component II (e.g. squalane) of very different molecular size, shape, structure, and/or polarity, and it is shown how the rather complicated types of phase diagrams can be calculated and correlated. The importance of fluid mixtures extends far beyond the fields of science and technology reviewed.

Abstract:The use of supercritical fluids, especially carbon dioxide, in the extraction of plant volatile components has increased during two last decades due to the expected advantages of the supercritical extraction process. Supercritical fluid extraction (SFE) is a rapid, selective and convenient method for sample preparation prior to the analysis of compounds in the volatile product of plant matrices. Also, SFE is a simple, inexpensive, fast, effective and virtually solvent-free sample pretreatment technique. This review provides a detailed and updated discussion of the developments, modes and applications of SFE in the isolation of essential oils from plant matrices. SFE is usually performed with pure or modified carbon dioxide, which facilitates off-line collection of extracts and on-line coupling with other analytical methods such as gas, liquid and supercritical fluid chromatography. In this review, we showed that a number of factors influence extraction yields, these being solubility of the solute in the fluid, diffusion through the matrix and collection process. Finally, SFE has been compared with conventional extraction methods in terms of selectivity, rapidity, cleanliness and possibility of manipulating the composition of the extract.

Abstract:Supercritical fluid extraction (SFE) stands out as an incredibly efficient, environmentally conscious, and fast method for obtaining essential oils (EOs) from plants. These EOs are abundant in aromatic compounds that play a crucial role in various industries such as food, fragrances, cosmetics, perfumery, pharmaceuticals, and healthcare. While there is a wealth of existing literature on using supercritical fluids for extracting plant essential oils, there's still much to explore in terms of combining different techniques to enhance the SFE process. This comprehensive review presents a sophisticated framework that merges SFE with EO extraction methods. This inclusive categorization encompasses a range of methods, including the integration of pressurized liquid processes, ultrasound assistance, steam distillation integration, microfluidic techniques, enzyme integration, adsorbent facilitation, supercritical antisolvent treatments, molecular distillation, microwave assistance, milling process and mechanical pressing integration. Throughout this in-depth exploration, we not only elucidate these combined techniques but also engage in a thoughtful discussion about the challenges they entail and the array of opportunities they offer within the realm of SFE for EOs. By dissecting these complexities, our objective is to tackle the current challenges associated with enhancing SFE for commercial purposes. This endeavor will not only streamline the production of premium-grade essential oils with improved safety measures but also pave the way for novel applications in various fields.

Abstract:The supercritical fluid extraction and fractionation method (SFEF) can realize deep cut and separation for heavy oils, which have provided a powerful tool for heavy oil chemistry research. This work summarizes recent research progress on aspects include the association and aggregation, the diffusion phenomena of SFEF cuts, the association and interaction between trace metal species and asphaltene in liquid solvent and supercritical conditions. The molecular level composition changes in supercritical extraction, thermal reaction and hydrotreating processes will also be discussed. The inspiration of the relevant chemical fundamentals to the development of heavy oil multi-stage separation by supercritical fluid processing technologies will be introduced as well.

Abstract:The applications of supercritical fluid in micro-powder formation represent a new area in recent years. The status of research, major achievements and further developing in the research of micro- powder formation with supercritical fluids were reviewed. Abstract:Supercritical fluid technologies offer a propitious method for drug discovery from natural sources. Such methods require relatively short processing times, produce extracts with little or no organic co-solvent, and are able to extract bioactive molecules whilst minimising degradation. Supercritical fluid extraction (SFE) provides a range of benefits, as well as offering routes to overcome some of the limitations that exist with the conventional methods of extraction. Unfortunately, SFE-based methods are not without their own shortcomings; two major ones being: (1) the high establishment cost; and (2) the selective solvent nature of CO₂, i.e., that CO₂ only dissolves small non-polar molecules, although this can be viewed as a positive outcome provided bioactive molecules are extracted during solvent-based SFE. This review provides an update of SFE methods for natural products and outlines the main operating parameters for extract recovery. Selected processing considerations are presented regarding supercritical fluids and the development and application of ultrasonic-assisted SFE methods, as well as providing some of the key aspects of SFE scalability.
