Abstract:Experimental and analytical studies were conducted on three full-scale precast (PC), prestressed concrete pile to cast-in-place (CIP) concrete pile-cap subassemblies having typical details used. in bridges in seismic regions. Test results of two connections under constant axial load and cyclic lateral forces indicated that despite a shallow embedment of the PC pile end to the pile cap, considerable moment can be resisted by the connection. Results from testing a pile-to-pile-cap connection subjected only to cyclic axial loading revealed adequate tensile and compressive capacities. It is proposed that the moment capacity of the pile-to-pile-cap connection with shallow embedment can be calculated based on the summation of the flexural capacity of the pile end considering only the anchor dowel bars and the resistance of the embedment.

Abstract:To investigate the seismic behavior of bridge pile-to-pile-cap connections, five full-scale H-shaped steel pile-to-pile-cap connection subassemblies representing a portion of a typical bridge pile foundation were tested. Two of the full-scale subassembly specimens were subjected to a vertical cyclic load simulating axial forces in a pile caused by footing overturning during an earthquake attack. Two others were loaded with cyclic lateral force and constant vertical load. One specimen was tested under proportionally varied vertical and horizontal forces. It was found that, although it was designed as a pinned connection following the current design standard, the pile-to-pile-cap connection can sustain a significant amount of moment. Localized brittle failure was observed in the vicinity of the pile-to-pile-cap connection, as the results of unexpected moment resistance. Test results also showed that the anchorage details using two V-shape bars could not develop the full-design ultimate tensile capacity. Analytical methods are developed and found adequate to evaluate the strength of the pile-to-pile-cap connection.

Abstract:Steel H-shaped piles are widely used in bridge foundations, but studies on their connections with reinforced concrete pile-cap are quite limited. This paper reports experimental results from monotonically loaded static tests on model steel H-pile to pile-cap connections,in which the piles were subjected to tensile loading or horizontal loading with the bending in the strong or weak bending directions of the H piles. The model H-pile was shallowly embedded into the footing and anchored by four steel bars welded to the web of the H shape. The tests indicate that H-pile-footing connections were effective in transferring vertical and lateral loads. The results of load–displacement analysis show that the connections can sustain a certain amount of moment, though there is no specific design procedure in current codes. A method modified from a previous study by the first author can predict the capacity reasonably well. The study also shows that the FEM analyses can capture the load and deformation relationship and load carrying capacity of the steel H-pile to pile-cap connection satisfactorily.

Abstract:In this study, two column and pile-footing models consisting of concrete-filled steel tube (CFT) columns, reinforced concrete footings, and steel H-piles were designed and constructed at approximately one-fifth scale. The experimental differences between the two models were in the design details of the CFT column-to-footing connections. One connection consisted of welded studs, and the other used a base plate and stiffeners. The two models were tested in a vertical cantilever condition with cyclic horizontal forces and a constant axial load applied to the top of the column. The model footings were supported on 16 model steel H-piles simulating the pile foundation. Under imposed horizontal displacement, the two models with different CFT-to-pile-cap connection details demonstrated satisfactory cyclic behavior, with the development of full plastic hinges at the bottom of the columns. Strut-and-tie modeling analysis was carried out to show the force-resisting mechanism in the reinforced concrete footing. Abstract:Recent studies and in-situ tests have found that the ground improvement under embankment is largely different from the building foundation due to embankment' smaller rigidity.The side friction of pile,the axial stress within piles and the depth of pile end penetrating into the embankment and soil were studied numerically under different cushion moduli,pile moduli,soil moduli,replacement ratio and pile length.The author point out that the penetration depth of pile end under embankment disagree with that mentioned in the Technical Code of Pile Foundations due to different causes of pile end penetration.

Abstract:In order to study pile-soil interaction of composite foundation with rigid-flexible piles,static load test of composite foundation with one cast-inplace pile and four cement mixing piles under stripe foundation is carried out in Wenzhou area.On the basis of monitoring data,this paper analyses load bearing capacity and deformation under the application of load.The Q-s curve variation of composite foundation is slow.Soil pressure distribution under stripe foundation shows the shape of being large in middle part and small at the edge.The soil stress concentration occurs at the plane of pile tip.There are negative friction force at rigid pile top and flexible pile top.Furthermore,the degree of bearing capacity display on rigid pile is 0.97,while that on flexible pile is 0.73 and that on soil is 0.99.

Abstract:The load transfer mechanism and deformation characteristics of cast-in-place piles in composite foundation with rigid-flexible piles are different from that in free state. Working property of pile is complex due to interaction between rigid pile, flexible pile and soil. Static load tests of the same pile under different situation are carried out in Wenzhou. On the basis of monitoring data in the process of static load test, settlement characteristics, load transfer mechanism and compression of pile shaft are analyzed; the conclusions can benefit to engineering design and construction.

Abstract:Based on test data of load sharing between pile and cap of single cap pile foundation below column in the tall building, the properties of load sharing between pile and cap, the reaction forces of pile top and soil between piles are analyzed. Pile and cap can together bear the loads. Pile and soil below cap can respectively share 80% and 20% of total loads. The ratio of loads shared by soil below cap and pile changes largely during early period of the engineering, and gradually becomes stable with the end of main structure. Reaction force of the middle pile is smaller than that of the edge pile and the corner pile. Reaction force distribution of pile top and soil below cap is saddle shape along side cap. The test results of this engineering are useful for design of single cap pile foundation below column in tall building.
A Field Study on the Behavior of Static Drill Rooted Nodular Piles with Caps under Compression

Abstract:The static drill rooted nodular (SDRN) pile is a new type of composite pile that consists of a precast pile and surrounding cemented soil. Its cost advantages and environmentally friendly construction have been proven in applications in Southeast China. Moreover, the composition of pipe pile and nodular pile is based on the load transfer mechanisms of a pile foundation, which is effective in optimal design. This paper presents a field study on the behavior of SDRN piles under compression. The load-displacement response, axial force, mobilized load of pile cap, skin friction, and tip resistance of the composite pile are discussed. Here, the bilinear base load-displacement model was adopted to analyze the test results. It is found that providing caps on the static drill rooted piles takes full advantage of the static drill rooted method, and drilling and grouting into the soil beneath the cap, which can be considered a type of ground improvement treatment, can increase the bearing capacity of the pile cap; thus, setting a pile cap for this type of piles is recommended. The existence of the caps in the field tests decreased the skin friction of the upper part of pile shaft because of the additional settlement of the surrounding soil, which developed owing to the pressure from the caps. The frictional capacity of the concrete-cemented soil interface was much higher than that of the cemented soil-soil interface. The skin friction of the lower part of the pile shaft was about 1.25 times in clayey soil and 2.0 times in sandy soil compared with the bored pile. It can be concluded that the cemented soil-soil interface of the SDRN pile was probably better than the concrete-soil interface of the bored pile. The test results fitted the first stage curve of the bilinear model well, and it can be supposed that the base soil was strengthened because of the permeation of the cement paste.

Abstract:In this paper, an analytical framework is developed to investigate the dynamic impedance of pile groups comprising an arbitrary number of cylindrical piles connected with a rigid cap. The solution considers the combination of the secondary ground wave effects transferred by the pile‒soil vibration and the hydrodynamic pressure from the pile‒water interaction. A displacement attenuation function is introduced to define the pile‒to‒pile interaction factor, which describes the relationship between the active and passive piles based on the soil reaction development. The pile is modeled as a Euler‒Bernoulli (EB) beam, and the hydrodynamic pressure is calculated using radiation wave theory. Biot's dynamic poroelastic theory describes the saturated soil around the piles. The rationality and correctness of the proposed theoretical model are verified by degenerating the solution to the existing research results. An extensive parametric analysis is conducted to investigate the effect of various factors on the lateral dynamic impedance of the group pile. Moreover, some interesting findings and meaningful conclusions are obtained.

Abstract:A newly developed composite foundation technique is used in the practical project of soft soil foundation treatment. This kind of composite foundation is made up of two types piles, the rigid one is concrete pile, and the flexible one is mixed-in-place cement pile. The design ideas of the composite foundation are proposed. In order to determine the bearing capacity of composite foundation, the in-site loading tests of an important project were carried out; and the major engineering characteristics of the composite foundation are studied. The stress ratio and the load ratio of pile to soil in the process of loading are analyzed carefully. The results of tests indicate that the rigid pile, the flexible pile and soil can interact on each other very well; and their bearing capacities can be developed reasonably.

Abstract:Centrifuge model tests are carried out to study the composite foundation under embankment which is reinforced by rigid piles with caps on the layered ground that the upper layer was soft clay and the lower layer was stiff sand. Variable acceleration loading method, constant acceleration loading method and gasbag loading method are applied to simulate the construction process, operation process and failure process of embankment. Working behavior, which including displacement of embankment and ground, internal force and deformation of piles in different position, soil stress and pore water pressure between piles, and failure modes of composite foundation are analyzed. Results show that the ground deformation is presented as settlement, horizontal displacement and toe heave. The pile-soil stress ratio in the middle of embankment (25.0) is greater than that in slope shoulder (17.4). Failure modes of piles in different position under embankment are different. To the piles under the middle of embankment, the most likely failure mode is compression failure. The piles under slope shoulder may be subjected to press-bending failure or overturning failure, and the piles under slope toe may occur tension-bending failure or overturning failure.

Abstract:The engineering characteristics of composite foundation with rigid-flexible and long-short piles are studied. By using the finite element method, the effects of cushion modulus, cushion thickness, short pile modulus, and long pile length on the total settlement of composite foundation, the stress ratio of long-short pile, and the axial stress of long-short pile are discussed respectively. The results show that the engineering characteristics of composite foundation can become more reasonable by optimizing material parameters; and long pile can effectively reduce settlement of composite foundation. Based on the in-situ measurement of pressures in soil and piles of a practical engineering in Wenzhou City, stress ratio of pile to soil and pressures in the process of construction are analyzed. Some conclusions are provided as references for future design and application of this kind of composite foundation.

Abstract:The effect of further downward excavation beneath an existing building on the pile foundation is different from the one encountered in a newly-created excavation case. Based on the finite-element parameters derived from a case history, a hardening-soil model and a contact-surface model are adopted to simulate the characteristics of soil and the pile-soil interaction, respectively. The three-dimensional finite element framework takes into account the interaction of piled raft foundation, ground and excavation, and is able to investigate the vertical bearing behavior of the existing pile groups after the excavation. The investigation accounts for the effects of end-bearing soil stiffness and excavation depth on the variation trends of pile-head rigidity, pile force, pile shaft resistance, ratio of pile base resistance and soil rebound. The results show that individual piles in an existing pile group subjected to further excavation behaved differently. Increasing the stiffness of the end-bearing soil is crucial to enhancing pile capacity and the critical ratio of pile base resistance. The excavation depth is a key factor that positively influences the mobilization degree of the shaft and base resistances of existing piles. The present results are possible to assist the deformation control of structure underpinning and the design of supplemented pile for further excavation under existing basement.
Longitudinal dynamic characteristics of a defective tapered pile with exposed cap in layered soil

Abstract:The longitudinal dynamic characteristics of a defective tapered pile embedded in layered soil is investigated considering that an exposed cap is connected with the pile top rigidly. According to the layered condition of the surrounding soil and the variable cross-section of the tapered pile, the pile-soil system is discretized into multiple segments. By employing the complex stiffness transfer mechanism (CSTM) to simulate the construction disturbance, the complex stiffness of the surrounding soil was solved. The vertical reaction of the surrounding soil on the annular projections at the interfaces of adjacent pile segments is generalized as a Voigt model, while the exposed cap is regarded as an expanding segment of the pile. The analytical solution to the dynamic impedance of a defective tapered pile with exposed cap subjected to a vertical excitation is then derived by means of the Laplace transformation and the amended impedance function transfer method (AIFTM). Based on the presented solution, the influences of the pile-soil system parameters on the velocity response at the cap top are investigated in detail. Some conclusions derived from this study could provide practical guidance for the engineering practice of tapered pile.

Abstract:The technology of the composite ground under a flexible foundation have been widely used in transportation, water conservancy and other departments, yet its theory of characterizing the behavior of the composite ground needs to be further researched. A simplified analytical model is presented, considering the above four parts which includes the flexible foundation, the cushion, the composite ground, and the underlying soils as an interactive system, allowing for the relative movement between piles and soils, and assuming different settlement of foundation soil at the same elevation. The force equilibriums of a typical element are established. And then, according to the compatibility of stress and deformation on the interfaces between these four components, the formulas on settlement and stress ratio of pile-soil, which is used to characterize the behavior of the composite ground, are derived.

Abstract:The paper deals with experimental activity on 4 scale-models of elevated pile cap foundation belonging to a real bridge. The foundation was composed of 9 piles, pile cap and pier and the special soil box was built to consider soil-pile-superstructure interaction. Two specimens were strengthened by steel protective pipe at each pile top. The tests consist of cyclically imposed displacement to 4 specimens, performed in the state key laboratory for disaster reduction in civil engineering of Tongji University. According to the test result, the peak strength of strengthening specimens is about 1.77 times of the others and the ultimate displacement is 1.66 times of the original models. Additionally, the dissipated hysteric energy capability of strengthening specimens is more than 2.15 times of the others as the equivalent viscous damping ratio is reduced by 50%. Other relevant phenomena are the pinching effect of original specimens is more obvious and the hysteretic loops of reinforced specimens are more plumpness. Moreover, the failure and collapse mechanisms of the elevated pile cap foundation were summarized. Finally, the measures to enhance the aseismic capability for elevated pile cap foundation were proposed.
