Abstract:Conflicts and tensions among major powers are often seen as clashes of interests between entities with significant influence. Nevertheless, from a historiographical standpoint, one would challenge the validity of such a simplistic view. The themes of nations that have to be considered full are undeniably formed by comprehensive historical and cultural components. Hence, it is essential to comprehensively evaluate cultural disparities to have a comprehensive understanding of interstate conflicts. This research uses case studies and qualitative methodologies to conduct a comparative analysis of the ideologies and national value identities that underlie Chinese-American interactions during the last decade. It focuses on the cultural distinctions inherited from China and the United States in order to get a deeper understanding of these connections. This research posits that the concept of democracy is firmly ingrained in the cultural and political fabric of these societies, giving rise to divergent ideologies. Numerous pieces of evidence indicate that the cultural aspects of a country significantly influence its political evolution.

Abstract:By adopting a scholarly perspective on comparative journalism and intercultural communication, the present study delineates the conceptual common ground in terms of defining constructive journalism (CJ) and lays out the theoretical foundation for further discussion of this practical recontextualization in China's social and cultural contexts. The indigenous tradition of "public opinion surveillance" (POS) in China is traced out in comparison with the experiment of CJ and its derivatives like public/civic journalism in Western countries. In spite of different news philosophies and media eco-systems, promoting social reform and serving the people or the public constitute the common goals for both Chinese and Western journalists and media professionals. Notably, exploring the theoretical validity and practical applications of CJ and POS would provide a feasible entry point to the cross-cultural dialogue between the East and the West about news media innovation.

Abstract:Under the current trend of globalization, there are three major ideas obstructing the advocation and promotion of Sino-West cultural communication.One idea claims that the cultural communication on equal terms is impossible and the general trend of world cultures will end up in one culture replacing the other.Another idea argues that the merging of cultures will eventually lead to unified world culture with no distinction.The last one tends to magnify the untranslatability between different languages and cultural systems.Analysis is carried out here as to the possilility of different cultures communicating equally,the possibility of achieving the unified world culture with no distinction,and the possibility of accurate translating between cultures.Whereupon a wish is proposed:both China and the West should seek deeper awareness and understanding of each other,and promote the further communication and merging of the two cultures on the common ground of equality.

Abstract:Culture is the deposit of the world concepts acquired by a group of people,and it is learned and transmitted from generation to generation.Language is a system of symbols which enables people to communicate and also carries the culture shared by that language community.Translation is the process of conversion between two languages,and it is inevitably restricted by the culture embodied in both the source language and the target language.As an important part of mass media,news reports involve almost all parts of the social life and reflect the latest development of the social culture,and moreover the readers vary greatly,so rich cultural elements can be found between the lines of news.Thus,it is required that the news translators must have the intercultural awareness in the process of translating.Intercultural awareness is mainly the awareness of the cultural differences,so improving the sensitivity to the cultural differences is the premise of translation in intercultural communication.Therefore,when dealing with the translation of English news reports,the translator should not only be familiar with the linguistic features of both the source and target languages,but also be aware of the cultural connotations implied in the words and phrases so that proper ways of translation can be adopted to tackle the disparity of information brought by culture.The author lists the cultural elements in English news reports which are penetrated in thinking patterns,customs,idioms,personages,history and some jargons,and then translates these news reports in a proper way for the reference of translators in English news translation.
The horizon of cross-cultural understanding: a case study of Jock Tuzo Wilson's One Chinese Moon

Abstract:This article explores the question of cross-cultural understanding by reading One Chinese Moon (1960), a book that records Canadian geophysicist Jock Tuzo Wilson's travel to Great Leap Forward China in 1958. As a transcultural traveller, Wilson is able to see the distance between common assumptions about the visited country and the reality he witnesses during his travel. His awareness of such distance does not overcome his limitations as an observer, but nonetheless results in his providing the reader with nuanced, comparative observations of the travelled culture and his home culture. With privileged hindsight, we see that on most occasions the traveller cannot transcend the limit of history and his realm of knowledge when representing the visited place, which always puts his cultural translation in question. Nevertheless, his travel showcases a conscious effort to reach an understanding of China based upon his recognition of the common ground underneath striking national, cultural, and political disparities. His is an understanding that comprehends cultural difference not as an obstacle to knowing a foreign culture, but as a puzzle that elicits interest in that culture and causes an urge to learn the culture better. The process of cultural translation not only brings about an insightful vision of the traveller's original culture but also results in a global consciousness or a cosmopolitan conviction that casts into doubt the constructed boundaries between nations and cultures. Rather than pursuing an authentic version of a real China at the time of Wilson's travel – if such a version exists at all – this article questions the binarism represented in the existing discourse of and about travel writing by reading a neglected travel account.

Abstract:Nowadays,new technologies are reinventing journalism,the study of journalism in China is facing structural difficulties,cognitive changes,and practical confusion.In the face of the complex social network interwoven with people and things,the journalism theory driven by the logic of"thingology"no longer has explanatory power,and there is an urgent need for a new perspective to re-understand the material,emotional,and relational changes occurring in Journalism.Therefore,this article introduces the theory of"social world"from the perspective of materialist phenomenology,following the principles of"interactional practices in context","relational forms",and"construction of order".By revisiting the topics of Chinese journalism research in 2023,the study tries to respond to how journalism theories and organizational and propaganda practices in the digital era should be carried out under the orientation of humanism.Finally,the paper puts forward a perspective towards"News-World",which is both to understand journalism's role in the social world and to understand the social world we live in through journalistic practices.

Abstract:Under the background of new media, the advantages of self-media in cultural communication have become more and more obvious, and the way of communication of cultures of different countries has changed a lot. How to better realize cross-cultural communication in the new media era has attracted much attention. Nowadays, foreigners in China are playing their own role in spreading Chinese culture with their unique perspectives and methods. This paper takes Japanese self-media works in China as an example, analyzes the contents of their China-related documentaries, discusses the characteristics and advantages of such works in cross-cultural communication, and looks forward to how better to realize cross-cultural communication through self-media in the future, so as to promote the cultural exchange between countries and the understanding and recognition of foreign cultures.

Abstract:News reports are significant for constructing a country’s image in the international community. The frame analysis of Western media coverage of China is quite popular. With the arrival of the Beijing Winter Olympics, which stands as another historical moment in the processing of China’s external image, disputed issues in China have surfaced again in the Western media. In the context of the new media, there still exists a research gap on the new characteristics of Western media when reporting China and the resulting recent changes in China's image. To fill this gap in the literature, based on the semiotic theory and framing theory, this dissertation has selected the 16 reports and their corresponding Twitter comments on the Beijing Winter Olympics which were published by the British news agency BBC in January - February 2022. By utilizing the AntConc to establish corpus and text analysis, it shall investigate from the perspective of others the discourse construction characteristics of Western media and the Chinese image from the three components of communication theme, text content, and audience feedback. The research results have presented that the Western media represented by the BBC cannot eliminate ideological stereotypes in the discourse construction of the "other" (China). The intention of the report is tendentious. Its reporting news frame is based on inherent prejudice and the opinion tendency to incite Public Opinion. Thus, it has resulted in the formation of a Chinese image of “high-pressure coercion” and “ignoring human rights” from the perspective of the other. Therefore, this dissertation adopts China as an example to propose the media cross-cultural international communication strategy of expanding the discourse subject, updating the symbol system and absorbing the folk discourse.

Abstract:With China being one of the largest sources of inbound tourists to Australia, the need to better understand Chinese culture has never been more highly emphasised by various organisations represented in Australian media, yet some cultural misreading with thinly-veiled value judgements are regularly discerned. Accordingly, a better cultural awareness is imperative for Australians to approach and understand Chinese people. This paper gives a brief review of the definitions of culture, its emergence and role in international relations. It then proceeds to the definition of Chinese culture and in particular, the turbulent history of modern Chinese culture. After a few preconceptions and misconceptions of Chinese culture in Australia are presented for discussion, finally some suggestions are made to help develop a historical and holistic view of Chinese culture.

Abstract:The concept of transculturalism has often been used to describe the increasingly complicated interactions between different cultures under the circumstances of globalization. It is also widely used in international communication and intercultural studies in China, and is often translated into different Chinese concepts such as "跨文化" "超越文化" "转文化". How can we better understand the meaning of this concept in different academic contexts? This paper discovered that this concept was developed as criticism of post-colonialism and that of Western cultural studies reflecting a worldview that is centered on Euro-centrism. The Chinese translation of transculturalism should accordingly vary in different academic discourses. The concept is of great significance to promote cultural equality, cultural connection and respect, cultural exchange and mutual learning. However, cultural competition and western-centrism embedded in Welsch's definition of transculturalism is worthy of attention.

Abstract:This paper uses the English translation of the well-known Chinese classic novel Hong Lou Meng as a case study to examine the difficulties and approaches associated with cross-cultural translation in literary works. The translation of festival names, the translation of idioms, and the translation regarding women make up the three sections of this work. Through a comparative investigation of the translation procedures of various versions, this research exposes the difficulties experienced in cross-cultural translation, including semantic change, cultural transmission, and feminist translation. It also suggests suitable translation techniques. It has been noted that translators must consider the cultural differences between the source and destination languages when translating between cultures. They are expected to utilize diverse translation techniques with flexibility to ensure the efficient conveyance of cultural information and optimize the literary value of the translated work.

Abstract:Epistemological Positioning refers to human being 's assessments concerning knowledge,including source of knowledge,the way knowledge is acquired,certainty of knowledge,deviations from knowledge and extent. This paper focuses on the salient feature of news discourse — sourcing,exemplified by two news reports on the Durban Climate Conference respectively from China Daily and The New York Times. It makes a contrast and comparison of this specific discourse construction strategy,analyzing how the journalists in the two reports express their attitudes in a covert way by employing this strategy. It also explores how to combine the three elements — historical situations,social-cultural contexts and linguistic signs in teaching to guide students to realize that linguistics signs are a means of knowledge construction and to cultivate their critical thinking.

Abstract:With the advancement of technology and the societies, cross-cultural communication among diverse cultures has become increasingly frequent, which promotes the mutual learning of different cultures. Meanwhile, the cross-cultural misunderstandings and conflicts caused by cultural differences will continue to increase, resulting in cultural barriers. Hence, there is a growing sense of urgency that we need to enhance our understandings of people among different cultures and ethnic backgrounds which is conducive to eliminating cultural misconceptions. This study focuses upon the cultural differences in social hierarchy, interpersonal relationship, human-nature relationship as well as sense of time between China and the West from the perspective of Hofstede’s cultural dimension theory, whose aim is to trace back to the roots of cultural differences, thus eliminating cultural misunderstandings to a certain extent and facilitating cultural exchanges between China and the West.

Abstract:In the situation of gradual globalization, communication and interaction between various languages and conventions have become more frequent. The reflection of the difference between Chinese and Western thinking in linguistic and cultural diversity has become more apparent and essential. By doing this, people can have a further comprehension of the values, cognitive styles, and social habits behind different cultures and languages. In recent research, it has been shown that there are differences in language expression between China and the West, as well as differences in personal values and time. The author would like to research the differences between Chinese and Western ways of thinking in language, the differences in social etiquette and ways of interacting with the different values and cognitive styles. The purpose of the research is to assist people better cope with the challenges of cultural conflicts and exchanges and to foster mutual cooperation among different cultures. The research method used in this paper is the literature review, and the significance of the research is that it not only can help people better cope with and conform to this difference in thinking between China and the West, but it also improves the international communication capacity of future students.
