Abstract:In the Qing Dynasty, the dispute between Jinwenand Guwen was a part of the disputes of Sinology between Neo-Confucianism, and the dispute evolved into a pivot of political and academic transformation in the late Qing and early Republic of China.With a view to reforming the ritual system by returning to the ancient political system, the movement which reexamine Chinese studies from disciplinary perspectives and discussed ancient history focused on differentiating and analyzing classics documents in order to eliminate the rationality of the political and educational system in Confucian ethics and rites.In the modern time, the New Culture generation of scholars promoted the historiography of classics.However, it is necessary to further probe into the academic division within traditional Chinese scholarship, and to study how the academic methods, issues and ideas inherited by scholars of different schools were developed and transcended by scholars of the Republic of China, leading to a pluralistic path in response to the integration of Chinese and western civilizations.In the 1930s, the historiography of classics had become a foregone conclusion.How to transcend the dispute of Jinwen and Guwen and deal with the ideas, methods and materials of classics in the way of history became the focus of the academic circle, thus opening a new round of controversy between Jinwen and Guwen.Scholars such as Qian Xuantong, Gu Jiegang and Meng Wentong called it ″Beyond the Jinwen″, and this transcendence and transformation became the starting point for scholars to practice new academic studies.In the academic circle of the Republic of China, there were different ways to inherit and surpass traditional Confucian classics.In the historical concept of the Guwen, the Six Classics were regarded as the ancient political documents, and the ancient history was separated from the spirit of Confucianism.The New Culture generation of scholars aimed to construct a course of internal cultural evolution course by means of historiography so as to change the study of classics into historiography, and construct the framework of Chinese cultural history without being limited by the Confucian re-creation of Chinese standard culture.The scholar Hu Shi put forward the idea of ″returning to Liao Ping″ to review the rationality of Liao Ping's division of Jinwen and Guwen by the system of rites.The scholar Qian Mu traced the academic evolution of Qin and Han Dynasties by historical facts, solved the dispute between Jinwen and Guwen, and was opposed to forced similarities and differences in the classics.Qian Xuantong and Gu Jiegang took a perspective of explicatory and analytical study, further historicized the issue of Jinwenand Guwen, and advocated going beyond the dispute over Jinwenand Guwen.Gu Jiegang advocated that Beyond the Jinwenshould absorb the criticism of Neo-Confucianism and the textual research of Sinology, so as to get rid of the old and bring forth the new, and clarify the evolution of Chinese history and culture.Based on Jinwen, Meng Wentong and Li Yuancheng emphasized the dynamic interaction of Classics, institution, and historical facts, and examine the sciences from a Chinese-studies perspective.They attempted to carry forward the New Confucianism of Qin and Han Dynasties to establish the core values of Chinese civilization and construct the dynamic relationship between Confucianism and historical evolution.They started the Confucianism-oriented historiography in the modern academic context.By examining the historical context in which various schools of thought have transcended the debate between Jinwenand Guwen, and by integrating methods and objectives, we can not only examine the complex connotation of the transformation of modern classics and history, but also reflect on and enrich the methods and significance of current historical studies, in order to turn historical studies into the source of the subjectivity of civilization.

Abstract:In the past 20 years, studies have been made on the transformation of culture, the cultivation of citizens, intellectuals, the educational institutions, the cultures of the upper and the lower classes, etc. , in modern China and many achievements have been made. Since 1979, valuable experiences have been accumulated concerning the new paradigm of the research of cultural history. Yet it should be pointed out that some researchers have not properly dealt with the relationship between theory and historical data.

Abstract:The birth of Chinese journalism and journalism history is inseparable from the so-called problem of modernity,namely the problem of "ancient and modern,Chinese and Western" in Chinese context.There are two ideas about the modernity and its discourse to date,one is the evolutionary idea from the traditional to the modern,including the liberalization path of "advancing to the world","in line with international practice" and "wholesale Westernization",and the revolutionization path of "national independence","national liberation" and People's freedom;the other is the culturalism idea from the civilization system to the modern system.Accordingly,it seems that the studies of journalism history can be categorized into different types.This paper makes a preliminary reflection and exploration on it,in the hope of secking after the internal logic of the Chinese journalism in the broad background of civilization.

Abstract:Recently,we find almost nothing about real journalism and real history in the study on the history of Chinese journalism,including the history of journalism in the People's Republic of China.To meet the challenge of double -vanishment of journalism and history,it's necessary to put real journalism and real history back into the history of Chinese journalism.And the social history of journalism may be a better solution,which should be examined and improved in the concrete practice rather than on the paper.

Abstract:Historiography communication is a special feature of human culture as well as the life of historiography. Sino-foreign historiography communication has a very long history, but its boom didn't come until modern time, especially the direct collision of Sino-foreign historiography at the end of the 19th century, which left behind a good page in its communication history. Sino-foreign historiography communication is very rich in its content and it has started a new era, which can be seen from the link of Sinology, Marxist science of history and post-modernist thinking. There are various ways for this communication, such as translation of books, teaching, writing and lecturing. It is of great significance for Chinese historiography which is going to the world, and will produce deep academic influence on the future development of Chinese historiography studies.

Abstract:It has been proved by the world's history of civilization that no civilization has ever rejected the influx of foreign ones and that each and every civilization has simply absorbed foreign ones into their own so as to preserve their own advanced features.The ancient Greek civilization is the best example of civilization amalgamation.The Greek cultural genes found in the Western Civilization had a great impact on contemporary China,Japan and India.This was also a great proof of the integration of Eastern and Western civilizations in the above mentioned way.With the amalgamation of different genes being the contributing factor to promote different civilizations and retain their own characteristics,it has been proven that China has promoted its own civilization and simultaneously absorbed the oncoming civilizations.Now it has been acknowledged on all hands that in the previous years of history,Chinese civilization has been a great motivating force to help evolve other civilizations in most countries of the world,particularly in the Arab world,Africa and Europe.However in this process of exchange,some discordant and disagreeable factors may interfere with the already smooth running features of the existing society,for example,political interference,military intervention and the spread of narcotics.The same incident was witnessed when the Western Eight-Nation Allied Army invaded China and opium was introduced and imported in large quantities to mar the very essence of Chinese civilization.This inhumane,callous and atrocious attitude on the part of the Westerners brought a bad name to the so-called benefactors of humanity.But this forcible influx of the eight-power expeditionary force into China with firearms actually created a big storm on the part of the revolutionary Chinese which marked the beginning of modern China.The outbreak of the 1911 Revolution can be regarded as the first fruit born by seeds of Western culture,which overthrew the rule of the autocratic,imperial power of Qing Dynasty and resulted in the development of Republic of China.Also,the New Cultural Movement and the May 4th Movement were the results of the introduction of Western culture into China.The intercommunication of Eastern and Western civilizations prove that different cultures as a common heritage of mankind provide a source for mutual respect,understanding,reference,assimilation and amalgamation,and that they play an important role in building a harmonious world.

Abstract:At present,China's communication research confronts double weakness:On the one hand,the research is relatively unsubstantial.It is short of either persuasive circumstances or research achievements to prove innovation.On the other hand,it lacks corresponding historical consciousness and narrative skills,resulting in its blank historical significance.In other words,there is no real history for China's communication research.Under this circumstance,we should use the beneficial resources of contemporary historical researches as reference,reconsider the relationships of the past and the history,time and structure,open the historical space through theoretical exploration,and try to deal with time in structure.In this way,we can transfer the old research method to a new one:to suspend history,break the time line,question the past and attempt to reconstruct our narration of China's communication research through multi-angles and multi-methodologies,in order to achieve its historical values.

Abstract:The manuscript is devoted to identifying the types and political characteristics of ancient Chinese newspapers. The study of the history of journalism is an important part of the study of Chinese history and, at the same time, contributes to a clear understanding of modern processes. The scientific discourse discusses historical and cultural factors influencing the development of modern journalism. Meanwhile, studying the history of ancient Chinese journalism is no less important than studying modern journalism in a given country. The article analyzes the socio-political conditions of the birth of newspapers in ancient China, the activities of their publishers, the political goals and content of newspapers, the audience, and interaction with the ruling authorities. A comparative analysis of ancient Chinese official, private legal and illegal publications is given. The author analyzes scientific sources based on the principle of historicism, such general scientific methods as analysis, synthesis, deduction, induction. The main research methods are historical-genetic and historical typological.

Abstract:This article aims at engaging in a constructive dialogue with Philip Huang. We approach China's administrative governance and economy from different perspectives but arrive at similar and complementary characterizations. I argue that what makes any theory about China valuable and valid lies in its ability to penetrate both China's history and its present, link theory and evidence, go beyond left and right, and combine East and West. Since it has been dominated by Western standards, academic research about China should stand firmly on historical reality as well as constructive dialogue with Western doctrines, but with full awareness of their implicit assumptions, some of which are bundled with Western-specific experiences, and their potential conceptual traps when applied to China. As an ambitious goal, we also should seek to generalize the experiences of both East and West.

Abstract:The relationship between narrative and argument is a controversial problem that has always been facing historians. Generated from the distinction between historical materials and history itself since the Qing dynasty, this problem became increasingly prominent during the debates over materials and perceptions in the Republican period. Moreover, when the classical Chinese was replaced by the vernacular language, the separation of quotations and main text was more inevitable both in writing and reading historical monographs, which made it more difficult for contemporary perceptions to coincide with historical opinions. Since the 1950s, there has been no consensus on this issue. Under such an influence, historians gradually valued argument over narrative. Consequently, materials were often dissociated from their own spatial and temporal environment and adapted into certain foreign frameworks, mistaking perceptions as historical facts. We should listen to history, trying to understand the real intention of our historical actors, and present it by integrating narrative with argument.

Abstract:Historiography places great emphasis on making distinctions.This sets it apart from most Social Sciences,which mainly seek synthesis.Therefore,historical research does not lend itself to grand summations,but rather to thorough understanding.However,making distinctions is not merely paying attention to the particular.Rather,it places even more weight on the whole in order to study the particular in light of the whole and seek out the pervasive links between individual cases.The thorough understanding of modern Chinese history not only needs to link ancient and modern,Chinese and foreign,but also needs to bridge all fields of study.However,in recent years historiography,which originally ought to be an integrated body of knowledge,has been continuously fragmented by the great variety of historical data and the pressures of departmental teaching and research agendas.Specialization is all the fashion,and reading is just a tool for professional development.When inappropriate standards of academic exchange and evaluation are added into the mix,together with a tendency to "trim our feet to fit our shoes" and "cut our suits without measuring our figures," the result is deepening scholarly turmoil.Only by returning to historiography's original principles,by grasping its system of knowledge and the origins and evolutions of its various divisions,by distilling the complex down to the simple,by reading widely and with open minds,by gaining new knowledge through reviewing what we know,by freeing our research of departmental prejudices and restrictions,and by following a well-thought-out plan,will we be able to do research with skill and ease and avoid mistaking the partial for the whole.

Abstract:Was there rhetoric thought in ancient China? In the 1970s,a few Western scholars said: that there was no rhetoric tradition in the East or Middle East.Up to now,has this changed or not? Should we interpret Chinese classic rhetoric technically or philosophically? Should we interpret it by the categories of ancient Greece,from a single cultural background or from multi-cultural and global perspectives? This is a proposition which has puzzled both occidental and oriental scholars.In order to highlight the extensive and profound thought of rhetorical culture in ancient China,this paper conducts a dialogue with such ancient Chinese masters as Confucius,Kuei Ku Tzu(鬼谷子),Han Fei Tzu(韩非子),Shusun Bao(叔孙豹) and Zhufu Yan(主父偃).The author tries to discuss and answer the following questions in this paper: Was there rhetoric in ancient China? Is the statement that no rhetoric tradition outside the West is cultural bias or arrogance? What is Chinese classic rhetoric? What concept of rhetoric should we take in times of globalization? What are the new trends of international rhetoric studies from the visual angle of Chinese classical rhetoric? The author thinks that rhetoric is a kind of moral cultivation,a life pursuit,a way which can make human life eternal and a tool of argument and persuasion.It is not only the important means of doing a good job in administering state affairs and ensuring national security,but also a social order,and a form of human culture and civilization.Rhetoric is also an effective way leading to benevolence,supreme good and universal harmony in the world.Global rhetoric is becoming a new social order of all human beings and a new vision of the confrontation and amalgamation of academic thoughts.
