Abstract:The crystalline structures and magnetic and thermodynamic properties of a Gd4Ga2O9 single crystal grown with the optical floating zone technique have been investigated. Gd4Ga2O9 crystallizes in a monoclinic structure with the space group P21/c at room temperature. Temperature-dependent magnetic susceptibility measurements along the three crystallographic axes reveal a paramagnetic (PM) behavior between 2 and 300 K. A Curie–Weiss (CW) law fit was carried out and the CW temperature θCW and magnetic frustration parameter f were calculated; these suggest antiferromagnetic (AFM) interactions between Gd3+ spins and a strong magnetic frustration. The field dependence of the magnetization at 2 K further confirms the magnetic frustration characteristics. A distinct λ-shaped peak at 1.4 K in the heat capacity curves suggests a transition from the PM to AFM phase. The magnetic entropy is contributed solely by Gd3+ ions.

Abstract:We have synthesized high quality single crystals of Sm4Co3Ga16 with gallium flux and investigated its physical properties with electrical resistivity, magnetization and specific-heat measurements. Antiferromagnetic transition below 6.7 K has been detected. No superconducting transitions have been dectected down to 0.5 K from our single crystals. Based on our experimental result, Sm3+ state in Sm4Co3Ga16 is likely well localized, in which stable magnetic moment in its doubly degenerated ground state contributes to the magnetic order with little interference of Kondo type of interaction.

Abstract:The magnetic properties of Sm2Fe17-xGax (x=0, 1, 2, 3) compounds and their hydrides are systematically investigated. The results reveal that all compounds have the Th2Zn17-type structure. As the content of Ga increases, the Curie temperature of Sm-2(Fe,Ga)(17) compounds increases, and their saturation magnetization decreases. It was first discovered that Curie temperatures of the hydrides of Sm-2(Fe,Ga), compounds measured from the heating process are higher than that measured from the cooling process. The difference was denoted as DeltaT(c)*. The correlation between ODelta(c)* and the structural stability of Sm-2(Fe,Ga) compounds as well as their corresponding hydrides was discussed. Abstract:A systematic investigation of structure and magnetic properties of the compounds R3Fe29-xTx (R=Y, Ce, Nd, Sm, Gd, Tb, and Dy; T=V and Cr) and their nitrides, carbides and hydrides has been performed. The nitrogenation and carbonization lead to a good improvement in the Curie temperature, the saturation magnetization and anisotropy fields at 4.2 K and room temperature, but the hydrogenation results in a good improvement for some hydrides and an obvious degeneration for other hydrides in the magnetic properties. The uniaxial anisotropy and the good intrinsic magnetic properties of Sm3Fe29-xTxNy and Sm3Fe29-xTxCy make these compounds the hopeful candidates for new high- performance hard magnets.

Abstract:Intermetallic compounds of Gd with Si, Ge, and Sn near 1:2 stoichiometry adopt several closely related crystal structures. We find that GdSi1.78 and Gd(Si0.684Ge0.316)1.78 crystallize in the same GdSi1.4-type orthorhombic structure (space group Imma), while GdGe1.57 and GdSn2 adopt α-ThSi2-type tetragonal structure (space group I41/amd) and ZrSi2-type orthorhombic structure (space group Cmcm), respectively. All compounds order antiferromagnetically; their Néel temperatures are only weakly affected by the magnetic field of less than 50kOe. Unusual features are observed including multiple phase transitions and thermomagnetic irreversibilities.

LaCa0.143 (4) O0.857 (4)F0.143 (4)Bi0.857 (4)S2 crystallizes in the tetragonal space group P4/nmm. The structure exhibits disorder of the Ca2+ and Bi3+ cations, and the O2- and F- anions. The structure is composed of a stacking of [(O,F)(2)La-2] layers and double [(Bi,Ca)S-2] layers. Magnetic property measurements indicate a very small magnetization at 300 K and the existence of weak ferromagnetism at 2 K.

Abstract:Single crystals of Y4PtGa12 have been synthesized and characterized by X-ray diffraction. The compound crystallizes in the cubic Im3m space group with lattice parameters a = 8.530(5) Å. Magnetic property measurements show that Y4PtGa12 does not order magnetically. Structure-property relationships with the isostructural antiferromagnet Tb4PtGa12 are discussed.

Abstract:This work reports the preparation of new quaternary sulfides Cs2Ln3CuS8 (Ln = La-Nd, Sm-Tb), their original crystal and electronic structures, and their magnetic properties. The sulfides were prepared using a reactive flux method from mixtures of Ln2S3 (EuS), Cs2S6, Cu2S, and S. They crystallize in a new type of structure (C2/m space group) and exhibit a layer-like crystal structure, which is a hybrid of those of the ACe2CuS6 series (A = Cs, K) and that of K2CeCu2S4. The values of the optical band gap calculated by the Kubelka-Munk equation are in the range of 1.2-2.62 eV depending on the nature of the Ln ion. The Cs2Gd3CuS8 compound displays relatively great magnetic refrigerating properties at cryogenic temperature with the mass entropy change (-ΔSM) reaching 19.5 J kg-1 K-1 at 3.5 K for ΔH = 5 T.

Abstract:The Nd:GGG crystal was grown successfully by the Czochralski method,and its structure was studied by laser Micro-Raman spectra.The Raman peaks and fluorescence peaks were discerned by using two excitation wavelengths(Ar+ 325 nm and 514.5 nm),the appeared fluorescence peaks were analyzed the tetrahedral,octahedral and dodecahedral structure of Nd:GGG crystal were contacted with the Raman peaks,and the vibration modes were also recognized.The obtained results are helpful to research the structure of solid-liquid boundary layer during the Nd:GGG growth and the change rule of the growth unit in the boundary layer.

Abstract:The single-phase compounds of Gd2Fe17-xGaxC2 (x=0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, and 6) with rhombohedral Th2Zn17-type structure were prepared by melt spinning for x less-than-or-equal-to 1 and arc melting for x greater-than-or-equal-to 2. Their formation, structure, and magnetic properties were studied. The substitution of Ga for Fe in Gd2Fe17C2 helps the formation of the 2:17-type structure. The addition of Ga results in the increase of the lattice constants and the unit-cell volumes. The Curie temperature has a small change when x less-than-or-equal-to 2, and then decreases rapidly with increasing Ga concentration. An approximately linear decrease of the saturation magnetization with x is observed when the nonmagnetic Ga atom is substituted for Fe.

Abstract:The correlation between magnetic and structural transitions in Gd(5)Si(x)Ge(4-x) hampers the studies of valence electron concentration (VEC) effects on magnetism. Such studies require decoupling of the VEC-driven changes in the magnetic behavior and crystal structure. The designed compounds, Gd(5)GaSb(3) and Gd(5)GaBi(3), adopt the same Sm(5)Ge(4)-type structure as Gd(5)Ge(4) while the VEC increases from 31 e(-)/formula in Gd(5)Ge(4) to 33 e(-)/formula in Gd(5)GaPn(3) (Pn: pnictide atoms). As a result, the antiferromagnetic ground state in Gd(5)Ge(4) is tuned into the ferromagnetic one in Gd(5)GaPn(3). First-principles calculations reveal that the nature of interslab magnetic interactions is changed by introducing extra p electrons into the conduction band, forming a ferromagnetic bridge between the adjacent (∝)(2)[Gd(5)T(4)] slabs.

Abstract:We report the single crystal growth and anisotropic magnetic properties of the tetragonal RAg$_2$Ge$_2$ (R = Pr, Nd and Sm) compounds which crystallize in the ThCr$_2$Si$_2$ type crystal structure with the space group \textit{I4/mmm}. The single crystals of RAg$_2$Ge$_2$ (R = Pr, Nd and Sm) were grown by self-flux method using Ag:Ge binary alloy as flux. From the magnetic studies on single crystalline samples we have found that PrAg$_2$Ge$_2$ and NdAg$_2$Ge$_2$ order antiferromagnetically at 12 K and 2 K respectively, thus corroborating the earlier polycrystalline results. SmAg$_2$Ge$_2$ also orders antiferromagnetically at 9.2 K. The magnetic susceptibility and magnetization show a large anisotropy and the easy axis of magnetization for PrAg$_2$Ge$_2$ and NdAg$_2$Ge$_2$ is along the [100] direction where as it changes to [001] direction for SmAg$_2$Ge$_2$. Two metamagnetic transitions were observed in NdAg$_2$Ge$_2$ at $H_{\rm m1}$ = 1.25 T and $H_{\rm m2}$ =3.56 T for the field parallel to [100] direction where as the magnetization along [001] direction was linear indicating the hard axis of magnetization.

Abstract:The crystal and magnetic structures of the Laves phase compound NdCo2 in the temperature range from 9 to 300K are determined by Rietveld refinement technique, using high-resolution neutron powder diffraction data. The compound crystallizes in space group Fd3¯m above the magnetic ordering temperature TC (≈100K), in space group I41/amd below TC and in space group Imma below the tetragonal–orthorhombic structural/magnetic transitions at TM≈42K. The assignment of the space groups to the crystal structures of NdCo2 in different temperature ranges complies with the reported Mössbauer studies. Detailed information of the crystal and magnetic structures of NdCo2 at different temperatures are reported.

Abstract:Investigations of inorganic compounds with mixed anions have drawn much attention. Here, three oxysulfides, Sm3NbS3O4 (1), Gd3NbS3O4 (2), and Dy3NbS3O4 (3), are obtained by solid-state reactions. 1 and 2 crystallize in the polar space group Pna21, while 3 crystallizes in the centric space group Pnma. The anionic frameworks of 1 and 2 are built by isolated distorted [NbS2O4]7- octahedra, while [NbS3O4]9- is used for 3. 1 and 2 exhibit phase-matchable second-harmonic-generation (SHG) effects of about 0.3 and 0.4 × AGS at 2.1 μm. The [NbS2O4]7- octahedron was first used as a SHG-active motif for nonlinear-optical (NLO) materials. A systematic analysis of the transformation between these crystal structures, NLO performances, and magnetic behaviors, as well as first-principles theoretical studies, is presented. This work enriches the study on relatively rarely explored NLO-active metal oxysulfides.
Magnetic phase transitions and spin density distribution in the molecular multiferroic system GaV 4 S 8

Abstract:We have carried out neutron diffraction and small-angle neutron scattering measurements on a high-quality single crystal of the cubic lacunar spinel multiferroic, GaV4S8, as a function of magnetic field and temperature to determine the magnetic properties for the single electron that is located on the tetrahedrally coordinated V4 molecular unit. Our results are in good agreement with the structural transition at 44 K from cubic to rhombohedral symmetry where the system becomes a robust ferroelectric, while long-range magnetic order develops below 13 K in the form of an incommensurate cycloidal magnetic structure, which can transform into a Néel-type skyrmion phase in a modest applied magnetic field. Below 5.9(3) K, the crystal enters a ferromagnetic phase, and we find the magnetic order parameter indicates a long-range-ordered ground state with an ordered moment of 0.23(1) μB per V ion. Both polarized and unpolarized neutron data in the ferroelectric-paramagnetic phase have been measured to determine the magnetic form factor. The data are consistent with a model of the single spin being uniformly distributed across the V4 molecular unit, rather than residing on the single apical V ion, in substantial agreement with the results of first-principles theory. In the magnetically ordered state, polarized neutron measurements are important since both the cycloidal and ferromagnetic order parameters are clearly coupled to the ferroelectricity, causing the structural peaks to be temperature and field dependent. For the ferromagnetic ground state, the spins are locked along the [1,1,1] direction by a surprisingly large anisotropy.

Abstract:We report the synthesis, crystal structure and magnetic properties of Rare-earth hexaaluminates REMgAl11O19 (RE = Pr, Nd) crystallized in a hexagonal structure with space group P6(3)/mmc, where the magnetically coupled rare-earth ions form perfect two-dimensional triangular layers well separated along c-axis. The magnetic susceptibilities reveal the dominant antiferromagnetic (AFM) interactions and no magnetic ordering down to 2 K with Curie Weiss temperature (theta(CW)) theta(CW) = -6.4 K and theta(CW) = -3.4 K for RE = Pr and Nd, respectively. Furthermore, the AFM interactions are robust against the nonmagnetic dilution by doping Lanthanum (La+) ions. The analysis of X-band electron spin resonance (ESR) spectra also supports the existence of AFM interactions in these two compounds. Our studies reveal a promising platform to investigate novel magnetic ground states in two-dimensional triangular lattice. (C) 2019 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
