Abstract:Fatigue failure can be thought by studying the collective motions of defects inside materials instead of focusing on the growth of a pre-existing micro-crack. An experimental study of the statistical distribution of acoustic emissions avalanches along cycling is presented. The evolutions of critical exponents through cyclic driving are estimated to track changes in the dissipation modes and consequently identify fatigue failure precursors. We also use critical rupture models developed for earthquakes and stock market crashes predictions to forecast the time to failure with good reliability.

Abstract:When far from equilibrium, many-body systems display behavior that strongly depends on the initial conditions. A characteristic such example is the phenomenon of plasticity of crystalline and amorphous materials that strongly depends on the material history. In plasticity modeling, the history is captured by a quenched, local and disordered flow stress distribution. While it is this disorder that causes avalanches that are commonly observed during nanoscale plastic deformation, the functional form and scaling properties have remained elusive. In this paper, a generic formalism is developed for deriving local disorder distributions from field-response (e.g., stress/strain) timeseries in models of crackling noise. We demonstrate the efficiency of the method in the hysteretic random-field Ising model and also, models of elastic interface depinning that have been used to model crystalline and amorphous plasticity. We show that the capacity to resolve the quenched disorder distribution improves with the temporal resolution and number of samples.

Abstract:The dynamical evolution of dislocations in plastically deformed metals is controlled by both deterministic factors arising out of applied loads and stochastic effects appearing due to fluctuations of internal stress. Such type of stochastic dislocation processes and the associated spatially inhomogeneous modes lead to randomness in the observed deformation structure. Previous studies have analyzed the role of randomness in such textural evolution but none of these models have considered the impact of a finite decay time (all previous models assumed instantaneous relaxation which is "unphysical") of the stochastic perturbations in the overall dynamics of the system. The present article bridges this knowledge gap by introducing a colored noise in the form of an Ornstein-Uhlenbeck noise in the analysis of a class of linear and nonlinear Wiener and Ornstein-Uhlenbeck processes that these structural dislocation dynamics could be mapped on to. Based on an analysis of the relevant Fokker-Planck model, our results show that linear Wiener processes remain unaffected by the second time scale in the problem but all nonlinear processes, both Wiener type and Ornstein-Uhlenbeck type, scale as a function of the noise decay time $\tau$. The results are expected to ramify existing experimental observations and inspire new numerical and laboratory tests to gain further insight into the competition between deterministic and random effects in modeling plastically deformed samples.

Abstract:Recently acoustic signature of dislocation avalanches in HCP materials was found to be long tailed in size and energy, suggesting critical dynamics. Even more recently, the intermittent plastic response was found to be generic for micro- and nano-sized systems independently of their crystallographic symmetry. These rather remarkable discoveries are reviewed in this paper in the perspective of the recent studies performed in our group. We discuss the physical origin and the scaling properties of plastic fluctuations and address the nature of their dependence on crystalline symmetry, system size, and disorder content. A particular emphasis is placed on the associated emergent behaviors, including the formation of dislocation structures, and on our ability to temper plastic fluctuations by alloying. We also discuss the "smaller is wilder" size effect that culminates in a paradoxical crack-free brittle behavior of very small, initially dislocation free crystals. We show that the implied transition between different rheological behaviors is regulated by the ratio of length scales $R=L/l$, where $L$ is the system size and $l$ is the internal length. We link this new size effect with other related phenomena like size dependence of strength ("smaller is stronger") and the size induced switch between different hardening mechanisms. One of the technological challenges in nanoscience is to tame the intermittency of plastic flow. We show that this task can be accomplished by generating tailored quenched disorder which allows one to control micro- and nano-scale forming and opens new perspectives in micro-metallurgy and structural engineering of ultra-small load-carrying elements. These results could not be achieved by conventional methods that do not explicitly consider the stochastic nature of collective dislocation dynamics.

Mass Transfer and Morphology Change Via Dislocation Emission in a Macroporous FCC Metal

Abstract:In a first effort, the dislocation structure and related mass transfer in a macroporous FCC metal is studied via atomistic simulation. The interaction between the void and its periodic image has been intense ever since the onset of dislocation emission. The accumulated mass transfer is due to the emission of multiple shear loops, which shapes the morphology of the macroporous metal. The removal of mass from the intervoid ligament triggers its breakdown, connecting the voids. The strengthening of intervoid interaction is shown by running multiple cases with atom count ranging from 7.1 million to 95.4 million. The critical stress for dislocation emission versus the size of void is in a good agreement to the Lubarda model adjusted by the Gibson-Ashby scaling law. Nevertheless, the critical stress of void with a short intervoid ligament distance (ILD) demonstrates a surprisingly insensitivity of strain rate compared with the void that can be deemed standalone. Abstract:We show that dynamical systems with spatial degrees of freedom naturally evolve into a self-organized critical point. Flicker noise, or 1/f noise, can be identified with the dynamics of the critical state. This picture also yields insight into the origin of fractal objects.

Abstract:In this paper we demonstrate an unusual behavior in the shear-banded flow of a viscoelastic fluid. We report large and patterned fluctuations in the shear stress in an apparently fluid material undergoing steady shear, which we interpret as an intermittent and microscopic fracture and self-healing process. The statistical pattern of the fluctuations is indicative of self-organized criticality, and their magnitude can be directly related to the constitutive instability that underlies the shear banding.

Abstract:The responses of metals subjected to super high rates of deformation (> 10 !/), as shocking loading, is an area of active research.At such extreme loading rates, subsonic, transonic, and even supersonic dislocation (compared with the shear wave speed in metals) play a crucial role in plastic deformation.The behavior of high-speed dislocations is much more complex than that of quasi-static dislocations under static loads, as their self-force is history-dependent, and their evolution of density is rate-relevant.However, the fundamental questions regarding the self-force and evolution of high-speed dislocations in impacted materials is largely unknown.To address this gap, this study proposes an effective calculation method for self-force on high-speed dislocations based on the discrete-continuous model (DCM) of three-dimensional dislocation elastodynamics (3-DDE) and the dynamic J-integral of configurational mechanics.This method is applicable to subsonic, transonic, and supersonic dislocations in both isotropic and anisotropic media, and it can automatically consider the image force if the dislocation is close to the free surface.The effectiveness of the method is verified by comparing it with existing theoretical solutions and molecular dynamics results.The work investigates how crystal anisotropy, complicated motion history, and free surface influence the self-force of high-speed dislocations.Additionally, the study examines how dislocation evolves at high-speed changes under shock wave.The elastic precursor decay is analyzed considering the dislocation elastodyanmics effect.
Non-equilibrium dynamics of isostatic spring networks

Abstract:Marginally stable systems exhibit rich critical mechanical behavior. Such isostatic assemblies can be driven out of equilibrium by internal activity, but it remains unclear how the isostatic and critical nature of such systems affects their non-equilibrium dynamics. Here, we investigate the influence of the isostatic threshold on the non-equilibrium dynamics of active diluted spring networks. In our model, heterogeneously distributed active noise sources drive the system into a non-equilibrium steady state. We quantify the non-equilibrium dynamics of nearest-neighbor network nodes by the characteristic cycling frequency $\omega$---a measure of the circulation of the associated phase space currents. The distribution of these nearest-neighbor cycling frequencies exhibits critical scaling, which we describe using a mean-field approach. Overall, our work provides a theoretical approach to elucidate the role of marginality in active disordered systems.

Probing microplasticity in small scale FCC crystals via Dynamic Mechanical Analysis

Abstract:In small-scale metallic systems, collective dislocation activity has been correlated with size effects in strength and with a step-like plastic response under uniaxial compression and tension. Yielding and plastic flow in these samples is often accompanied by the emergence of multiple dislocation avalanches. Dislocations might be active pre-yield, but their activity typically cannot be discerned because of the inherent instrumental noise in detecting equipment. We apply Alternate Current (AC) load perturbations via Dynamic Mechanical Analysis (DMA) during quasi-static uniaxial compression experiments on single crystalline Cu nano-pillars with diameters of 500 nm, and compute dynamic moduli at frequencies 0.1, 0.3, 1, and 10 Hz under progressively higher static loads until yielding. By tracking the collective aspects of the oscillatory stress-strain-time series in multiple samples, we observe an evolving dissipative component of the dislocation network response that signifies the transition from elastic behavior to dislocation avalanches in the globally pre-yield regime. We postulate that microplasticity, which is associated with the combination of dislocation avalanches and slow viscoplastic relaxations, is the cause of the dependency of dynamic modulus on the driving rate and the quasi-static stress. We construct a continuum mesoscopic dislocation dynamics model to compute the frequency response of stress over strain and obtain a consistent agreement with experimental observations. The results of our experiments and simulations present a pathway to discern and quantify correlated dislocation activity in the pre-yield regime of deforming crystals.

Noise-Induced Collective Actuation in Active Solids

Abstract:Collective actuation describes the spontaneous synchronized oscillations taking place in active solids, when the elasto-active feedback, that generically couples the reorientation of the active forces and the elastic stress, is large enough. In the absence of noise, collective actuation takes the form of a strong condensation of the dynamics on a specific pair of modes and their generalized harmonics. Here we report new experiments conducted with centimetric active elastic structures, where collective oscillation takes place along the single lowest energy mode of the system, gapped from the other modes because of the system's geometry. Combining the numerical and theoretical analysis of an agent-based model, we demonstrate that this new form of collective actuation is noise-induced. The effect of the noise is first analyzed in a single-particle toy model that reveals the interplay between the noise and the specific structure of the phase space. We then show that in the continuous limit, any finite amount of noise turns this new form of transition to collective actuation into a bona fide supercritical Hopf bifurcation.

Qualitative and quantitative properties of the dynamics of screw dislocations

Abstract:This note collects some results on the behaviour of screw dislocation in an elastic medium. By using a semi-discrete model, we are able to investigate two specific aspects of the dynamics, namely (i) the interaction with free boundaries and collision events and (ii) the confinement inside the domain when a suitable Dirichlet-type boundary condition is imposed. In the first case, we analytically prove that free boundaries attract dislocations and we provide an expression for the Peach--Koehler force on a dislocation near the boundary. Moreover, we use this to prove an upper bound on the collision time of a dislocation with the boundary, provided certain geometric conditions are satisfied. An upper bound on the collision time for two dislocations with opposite Burgers vectors hitting each other is also obtained. In the second case, we turn to domains whose boundaries are subject to an external stress. In this situation, we prove that dislocations find it energetically favourable to stay confined inside the material instead of getting closer to the boundary. The result first proved for a single dislocation in the material is extended to a system of many dislocations, for which the analysis requires the careful treatments of the interaction terms.

Abstract:The paper is a tribute to Ladislas P. Kubin's long-standing work on the collective behavior of dislocations in jerky flow. In a first part, it reviews his contributions to the statistical, dynamical and multifractal analyses carried out on stress-time series recorded from both single crystals and polycrystalline samples of dilute alloys subjected to tensile tests at constant strain rate. Various spatio-temporal dynamical regimes were found as the applied strain rate was varied. Type C static bands were associated with quasi-random collective behavior, the hopping type B and propagating type A bands could be shown to correspond to chaotic and self-organized critical dynamics, respectively. The crossover between the A and B regimes was characterized by a large spread in the multifractal spectrum of stress drops, associated with heterogeneity of the dynamics. In a second part, the paper reviews the nonlocal models Ladislas inspired to interpret these results from numerical solutions of the boundary value problem, on the basis of dynamic strain aging, the incompatibility stresses associated with dislocations, their plastic relaxation and the spatial couplings they inherently involve. Eventual developments of this research, rooted in the same ideas, on the statistical and multifractal analyses of the accompanying acoustic emission are reviewed and discussed in terms of the synchronization of small-scale plastic events.

Abstract:Defects are inevitable during the manufacturing processes of materials. Presence of these defects and their dynamics significantly influence the responses of materials. A thorough understanding of dislocation dynamics of different types of materials under various conditions is essential for analyzing the performance of the materials. Ductility of a material is directly related with the movement and rearrangement of dislocations under applied load. In this work, we look into the dynamics of dislocations in ductile and brittle materials using simplified two dimensional discrete dislocation dynamics (2D-DDD) simulation. We consider Aluminium (Al) and Tungsten (W) as representative examples of ductile and brittle materials respectively. We study the velocity distribution, strain field, dislocation count, and junction formation during interactions of the dislocations within the domain. Furthermore, we study the probability densities of dislocation motion for both materials. In mesoscale, moving dislocations can be considered as particle diffusionm, which are often stochastic and super-diffusive. Classical diffusion models fail to account for these phenomena and the long-range interactions of dislocations. Therefore, we propose the nonlocal transport model for the probability density and obtained the parameters of nonlocal operators using a machine learning framework.

Fluctuator in disordered metallic point contacts: a simulation approach

Abstract:Electron transport through amorphous monatomic metallic structures generated earlier by molecular dynamics simulations is studied numerically. The interference of electronic trajectories backscattered by the structural disorder probes the multistable structural relaxations responsible for low-frequency noise in real metallic contacts. The structure of these modes is visualized; the dependence of noise magnitude on size and structure of the modes is studied. The transition from multistable behaviour to a more complex one is observed for temperatures far below the melting temperature. The current fluctuations observed numerically resemble the complex behaviour reported earlier for current noise in small metallic structures at moderate temperatures.

Stress-dependent normal mode frequencies from the effective mass of granular matter

Abstract:A zero-temperature critical point has been invoked to control the anomalous behavior of granular matter as it approaches jamming or mechanical arrest. Criticality manifests itself in an anomalous spectrum of low-frequency normal modes and scaling behavior near the jamming transition. The critical point may explain the peculiar mechanical properties of dissimilar systems such as glasses and granular materials. Here, we study the critical scenario via an experimental measurement of the normal modes frequencies of granular matter under stress from a pole decomposition analysis of the effective mass. We extract a complex-valued characteristic frequency which displays scaling $|\omega^*(\sigma)|\sim\sigma^{\Omega'}$ with vanishing stress $\sigma$ for a variety of granular systems. The critical exponent is smaller than that predicted by mean-field theory opening new challenges to explain the exponent for frictional and dissipative granular matter. Our results shed light on the anomalous behavior of stress-dependent acoustics and attenuation in granular materials near the jamming transition.

Abstract:The extreme miniaturization in modern technology calls for deeper insights into the non-conventional, fluctuation dominated mechanics of materials operating at microscale. For instance, both experiments and simulations show that sub-micron face-centered-cubic (FCC) crystals exhibit high yield strength accompanied by intermittent, power law distributed strain fluctuations. At macro-scales, the same bulk materials show bounded, uncorrelated fluctuations. Both anomalous strength and intermittency appear therefore as size effects: while the former is highly desirable, the latter is detrimental because stochastic dislocation avalanches interfere with forming processes and endanger structural stability. In this paper we quantify the coexistence of correlated and uncorrelated fluctuations in compressed Al alloys micro-pillars, demonstrate that the partition between the two is determined by sample size, and propose quantitative strategies allowing one to temper plastic intermittency by artificially tailored disorder. Our experimental results are rationalized using a theoretical framework that quantifies the competition between external (size related) and internal (disorder related) length scales.
Exploiting Localized Transition Waves to Tune Sound Propagation in Soft Materials

Abstract:Programmable materials hold great potential for many applications such as deployable structures, soft robotics, and wave control, however, the presence of instability and disorder might hinder their utilization. Through a combination of analytical, numerical, and experimental analyses, we harness the interplay between instabilities, geometric frustration, and mechanical deformations to control the propagation of sound waves within self-assembled soft materials. We consider levitated magnetic disks confined by a magnetic boundary in-plane. The assemblies can be either ordered or disordered depending on the intrinsic disk symmetry. By applying an external load to the assembly, we observe the nucleation and propagation of different topological defects within the lattices. In the presence of instabilities, the defect propagation gives rise to time-independent localized transition waves. Surprisingly, in the presence of frustration, the applied load briefly introduces deformation-induced order to the material. By further deforming the lattices, new patterns emerge across all disk symmetries. We utilize these patterns to tune sound propagation through the material. Our findings could open new possibilities for designing exotic materials with potential applications ranging from sound control to soft robotics.

Abstract:Understanding the mechanical behavior of solids at extremely high strain rates is of great scientific and technical interest. Current dislocation-based model of plasticity are typically implemented as quasi-static method. Their applicability to high strain rate condition is limited, because the influence of the elastodynamic stress field at extreme strain rates on the collective behavior of 3-dimensional (3D) dislocations is not clear, and the time-dependent nature is very important when the strain rate is higher than 106s−1 (e.g. laser shock loading). To overcome this limitation, we present here the first computational procedure for 3D discrete dislocation elastodynamics (DDE). A novel computational method is developed for calculations of the fully-resolved elastodynamic field of non-uniformly moving dislocation loops. The developed method here extends the technique of retarded potentials, which was originally used to describe the electrodynamics of charged particles moving near the speed of light. Comparison with independent 2D calculations establish the accuracy and convergence of the numerical scheme. It is shown that dislocation loop motion near the sound speed results in significant restructuring of the emitted elastodynamic fields. New insights on short-time dislocation interactions during shock loading are also revealed through a study of the forces between rapidly-moving shear dislocation loops.
