Abstract:In this paper, analytical method is employed to analyze the system strain energy and critical diameter of one kind of longitudinally heterostructure nanowire which contains component gradient buffer sections. Based on the critical diameter model of F. Glas in heterostructure nonawires, calculation has been made to research on how does single-layer thickness and total thickness of gradient buffer effect the critical radius of the system. The results illustrate that component gradient buffer layer can effectively reduce the system strain energy, and the thinner the single-layer buffer section thickness, the more obvious the improvement of its critical radius; if the lattice mismatch of the heterostructure nonawires is smaller, the strain energy can be reduced more significantly, also the greater rate of increase of its critical radius. The freedom cut of the nonawires diameter can be realized by controlling the component and thickness of buffer sections. Using Au assistant MOVCD method, we can get high-quality nonawires with component gradient buffer sections, in contrast to the bad quality SEM image of the nonawires without buffer layers, which effectively prove the above conclusions.
Modified Beam Theories for Bending Properties of Nanowires Considering Surface/Intrinsic Effects and Axial Extension Effect

Abstract:Several studies of the surface effect on bending properties of a nanowire (NW) have been conducted. However, these analyses are mainly based on theoretical predictions, and there is seldom integration study in combination between theoretical predictions and simulation results. Thus, based on the molecular dynamics (MD) simulation and different modified beam theories, a comprehensive theoretical and numerical study for bending properties of nanowires considering surface/intrinsic stress effects and axial extension effect is conducted in this work. The discussion begins from the Euler-Bernoulli beam theory and Timoshenko beam theory augmented with surface effect. It is found that when the NW possesses a relatively small cross-sectional size, these two theories cannot accurately interpret the true surface effect. The incorporation of axial extension effect into Euler-Bernoulli beam theory provides a nonlinear solution that agrees with the nonlinear-elastic experimental and MD results. However, it is still found inaccurate when the NW cross-sectional size is relatively small. Such inaccuracy is also observed for the Euler-Bernoulli beam theory augmented with both contributions from surface effect and axial extension effect. A comprehensive model for completely considering influences from surface stress, intrinsic stress, and axial extension is then proposed, which leads to good agreement with MD simulation results. It is thus concluded that, for NWs with a relatively small cross-sectional size, a simple consideration of surface stress effect is inappropriate, and a comprehensive consideration of the intrinsic stress effect is required.
First principles study of structural and electronic properties of pentagonal and hexagonal noble metal nanowires

Abstract:The equilibrium structure and electronic properties of four ultrathin free-standing pentagonal and hexagonal noble metal nanowires, that is, copper nanowires (CuNWs), silver nanowires (AgNWs), gold nanowires (AuNWs) and platinum nanowires (PtNWs), have been studied comprehensively by adopting a first-principles simulation based on the density-functional theory. The staggered topologies are more stable than the eclipsed ones by analyzing the bonding energy. The staggered ones with a linear atom chain in the center of the pentagonal or hexagons topologies are the preferred structures for CuNWs and AgNWs, but the staggered ones without a linear atom chain in the center of the pentagon or hexagon are the preferred structures for AuNWs and PtNWs due to the increasing core-core repulsions. The calculated electronic band structures and density of states present that all the noble metal nanowires are metallic. The projected densities of states (PDOS) of dominant d-states and the charge density show that the narrower d-state moved to the Fermi energy and metallic bonding character for all the noble metal nanowires.
Atomistic Numerical Investigation of Single-crystal Copper Nanowire with Surface Defects

Abstract:Based on the embedded atom method (EAM), a molecular dynamics (MD) simulation is performed to study the single-crystal copper nanowire with surface defects through tension. The tension simulations for nanowire without defect are first carried out under different temperatures, strain rates and time steps and then surface defect effects for nanowire are investigated. The stress-strain curves obtained by the MD simulations of various strain rates show a rate below 1 X 109 s-1 will exert less effect on the yield strength and yield point, and the Young's modulus is independent of strain rate. A time step below 5 fs is recommend for the atomic model during the MD simulation. It is observed that high temperature leads to low Young's modulus, as well as the yield strength. The surface defects on nanowires are systematically studied in considering different defect orientations. It is found that the surface defect serves as a dislocation source, and the yield strength shows 34.20% decrease with 45 surface defect. Both yield strength and yield point are significantly influenced by the surface defects, except the Young's modulus.
Surface Stress Effects On The Yield Strength In Nanotwinned Polycrystal Face-Centered-Cubic Metallic Nanowires

Abstract:The influence of surface stress on the yield strength of nanotwinned polycrystal facecentered- cubic (FCC) metallic nanowire is theoretically investigated. The contribution of surface boundaries on the strengthening/softening is analyzed in the framework of continuum mechanics theory by accounting for the surface energy effects. The other strengthening mechanisms originated from the inner boundaries are described by the Taylor model for the nanotwinned polycrystalline metals. The theoretical results demonstrate that the yield strength of nanotwinned polycrystal wires is dependent on the twin spacing, grain size and the geometrical size of the wire. The surface stress effects on the strength perform more and more significantly with decreasing the wire diameter, especially for the diameter smaller than 20 nm. In addition, the dependence of surface stress on the strength is also relevant to the size of microstructures as well as the magnitude and direction of surface stress. These results may be useful in evaluating the size-dependent mechanical performance of nanostructured materials.

Abstract:Twin–twin intersections are often observed in face-centered cubic (FCC) metallic nanostructures, which have important contributions to the plastic deformation and strengthening of FCC metals with low stacking fault energies. However, a deep insight into the underlying mechanism involved in the formation and evolution of twin–twin intersections remains largely lacking, especially in experiments. Here, by conducting the in situ straining experiments under high resolution transmission electron microscope (TEM), we directly visualize the dynamic evolution of a twin–twin intersection in Au nanowire at the nanoscale. It shows that dislocations in the incoming twin can either glide onto or transmit across the barrier twin via dislocation interaction with the twin boundary, resulting in the twin–twin intersection. Dynamic twinning and de-twinning of the twin–twin intersection govern the whole deformation of the nanowire. These findings reveal the dynamic behaviors of twin–twin intersection under mechanical loading, which benefits further exploration of FCC metals and engineering alloys with twin–twin intersection structures.
Fringing Field Effects in Semiconductor Nanowire Double Heterostructures

Abstract:This paper investigates the electrostatics and carrier transport in nanowires with double heterostructures (DH). The particular interests include strong fringing field and weak screening effects resulting from the increased surface to volume ratio in nanowires. A general device simulator, PROPHET, is employed for a model nanowire structure with Al0.2Ga0.8N/GaN DH. Our simulations show that in general, the junction depletion width in the active region increases for nanowire based DH devices. The impacts of such effect on carrier injection in nanowire devices as well as the roles of forward biasing and material compositions are also investigated.

Abstract:In this paper, a surface-layer model is established to study the axial polarization distributions and critical diameters of nanowires with different surface compositions. Analytical solutions are obtained based on this model, which are validated by the ab initio results for small-size nanowires and can also predict the behaviors of large-size specimen. Compared to the traditional Landau–Ginzburg–Devonshire theory using an extrapolation length, the present model describes more microstructure information of the surface-layer, and is thus capable of characterizing the influences of different surface compositions. Furthermore, this model may shed insight into the mechanisms of the size effect and polarization distribution patterns in nanoscale ferroelectrics.

Abstract:In order to further study the influence of the arrangement and matrix number of the conductive nanowires array on the field emission from the array, the more practical conductive hexagonal and square nanowire arrays were simulated with the mirror image floating sphere model in this paper. From the calculation results, the field enhancement factor of conductive nanowire array was expressed as the following expression: β = h / ρ (1/1+ W )+1/2(1/1+ W ) 2 +3, in which h is the height of conductive nanowire, ρ is the radius and W is a function of the independent variable R , R is the interwire distance. All calculated results indicated that the arrangement of conductive nanowires array has less influence on the field emission, while the interwire distance critically affects the field emission. As R R 0 , the field enhancement factor decreases rapidly with R . When R > R 0 , the enhancement factor hardly changes, where R 0 is the optimized interwire distance. The performance of field emission from conductive nanowire array hardly changes with the matrix number of the array, which only influences on the gradient curve of the enhancement factor. R 0 would decrease to some extent with the increasing of the matrix number.
Fabrication and Characterization of Nano/amorphous Dual-Phase FINEMET Microwires

Abstract:A nano/amorphous dual-phase FINEMET microwire was fabricated directly from molten alloy without any interstage annealing by a home-built melt extraction technique (MET). The microstructure, mechanical and pronounced electromagnetic interference shielding (EMI) effectiveness of this dual-phase microwire has been systematically evaluated. The structural analysis reveals that the as-cast FINEMET microwire consists of two distinct structures, i.e., amorphous and nanocrystalline phase due to their different cooling characteristics. Compared with other reported FINEMET alloys, the extracted microwire exhibits a superior high tensile strength of 1800 MPa. These nanocrystals enabled dual-phase microwires also exhibit large EMI SE values in the frequency range of 8-12 GHz (X-band) due to the multiple magnetic loss mechanisms associated with their intrinsic structural characteristics. The combination of excellent mechanical properties and electromagnetic properties make this kind of melt-extracted dual-phase FINEMET microwire promising for a range of structure and multifunctional applications. Abstract:In situ bending tests and dynamic modeling simulations are for the first time revealing the mechanical behavior of copper nanowires (NW) with radially grown fivefold twin structures on the atomic scale. Combining the simulations with the experimental results it is shown that both the twin boundaries (TBs) and the twin center act as dislocation sources. TB migration and L-locks are readily observed in these types of radially grown fivefold-twin structures.
Nanotwinning and Tensile Behavior in Cold-Welded High-Entropy-alloy Nanowires

Abstract:Since the fabrication technique for high-entropy alloy (HEA) nanowires/nanopillars is still in its infancy, neither experimental nor modeling analyses of their cold-welding performance have been reported. Based on insights accumulated in our previous experiments and simulations regarding cold-welded metallic nanowires, in this study, the cold-welding performance of HEA nanowires is probed by atomistic simulations. Among different materials, our simulations reveal that extensively twinned structures are formed in CoCrMnFeNi samples, but not in CoCrCuFeNi or Ni samples. The larger fracture strain in certain HEAs is due to the improved ductility around the fracturing area as well as multiple twinning. Unlike in Ni samples, the fracture strains in HEA samples, regardless of being cuboid or cylindrical, are improved by shrinking the sample size. Among different orientations, the [010]-direction monocrystalline nanowires fail at a strain over 0.6, which is almost double that of the [111] direction. The fracture strains in polycrystalline HEA samples are, on average, larger than those in polycrystalline Ni samples. Furthermore, fracture strains in randomly generated polycrystalline HEA samples are more predictable than those in polycrystalline Ni samples with identical grain configurations. As previously reported, dislocation emission is still a prerequisite to fracture in all cold-welded samples.

Abstract:The size effects of energetic surfaces on the elastic behavior of solid and hollow nanowires are investigated under diametral loading for the first time. In order to model the diametral compression test on nanowires, the structural version of the locally-exact theory is developed for solid and hollow nanowires (LETNW) by considering energetic surfaces attached at the boundaries of bulk materials and modeled using the Gurtin-Murdoch model. The developed analytical solutions employ Fourier series representations of displacement fields in the cylindrical coordinate system that exactly satisfy the governing differential equations, facilitating rapid convergence of full-field stress distributions. The solution's accuracy is validated against the in-house finite-element (FE) program which is currently the computational standard, where excellent agreement is obtained. The surface effects on the local stresses are then illustrated by varying the surface parameters, loading angle, dimension of nanowires, as well as residual surface stress. The efficiency of the LETNW is attributed to its analytical nature and thus consumes much less execution time relative to the FE implementation. What's more, instabilities associated with the solution of stress fields are observed with surface properties in certain crystallographic orientations for both LETNW and FE approaches. Contrary to the LETNW technique, the bifurcation phenomenon is shown to depend on the finite-element mesh refinement. The locally-exact theory provides an alternative and independent way of identifying surface bifurcations in solid and hollow nanowires and hence is a good tool in assessing the finite-element method as well as other approaches' predictive capability for this class of materials. Atomic investigations on the tension-compression asymmetry of AlxFeNiCrCu (x = 0.5, 1.0, 1.5, 2.0) high-entropy alloy nanowires

Abstract:The tension and compression of high-entropy alloy (HEA) nanowires (NWs) are remarkably asymmetric, but the micro mechanism is still unclear. In this research, the tension-compression asymmetry of AlxFeNiCrCu HEA NWs (x = 0.5, 1.0, 1.5, 2.0) was quantitatively characterized via molecular dynamics simulations, focusing on the influences of the NW diameter, the Al content, the crystalline orientation, and the temperature, which are significant for applying HEAs in nanotechnology. The increased NW diameter improves the energy required for stacking faults nucleating, thus strengthening AlFeNiCrCu HEA NWs. A few twins during stretching weaken the strengthening effects, thereby decreasing the tension-compression asymmetry. The increased Al content raises the tension-compression asymmetry by promoting the face-centered cubic to body-centered cubic phase transition during stretching. The tension along the [001] crystalline orientation is stronger than the compression, while the [110] and [111] crystalline orientations are entirely the opposite, and the tension-compression asymmetry along the [111] crystalline orientation is the minimum. The diversities in the tension-compression asymmetry depend on the deformation mechanism. Compressing along the [001] crystalline orientation and stretching along the [110] crystalline orientation induces twinning. Deformation along the [111] crystalline orientation only leaves stacking faults in the NWs. Therefore, the tension and compression along the [111] crystalline orientation exhibit minimal asymmetry. As the temperature rises, the tension-compression asymmetry along the [001] and [111] crystalline orientations increases, while that along the [110] crystalline orientation decreases.
Mechanical Behavior of Metallic Nanowires with Twin Boundaries Parallel to Loading Axis

Abstract:In this paper, the mechanical behavior of Al, Ni, Cu, Au and Ag nanowires (NWs) with a coherent twin boundary parallel to their longitudinal axis was investigated using molecular dynamics simulation. Our results show that the twin-structure NWs with circular cross-section exhibited a strong twin thickness strengthening effect, which led to their yield stress continuing to increase as the twin thickness decreased. The plastic deformation mechanisms of these NWs were significantly affected by both γsf/γusf [the ratio between the stacking fault energy (γsf) and the unstable stacking fault energy (γusf)] and the twin thickness. As the twin thickness decreased to three atomic layers, we discovered two new deformation models in the NWs. For Al and Ni, their plasticity was accommodated by lattice distortion resulting in brittle-like necking. Meanwhile, for Cu, Au and Ag, their plasticity was accommodated by lattice distortion and rearrangement that led to new grain formation in the NWs.

Abstract:In this paper, continuum multiscale models are proposed to describe the size-dependent mechanical properties of two kinds of heterogeneous nanostructures: radially heterogeneous nanowires and longitudinally heterogeneous nanolaminates. In both cases, the continuum models involve additional surface/interface energies, which allow capturing size effects. Several models of imperfect interface models, like coherent and spring-layer ones, are shown to respectively capture the size effects, which are reported by first-principles calculations performed on heterogeneous nanostructures. In each case, a procedure is proposed to identify the parameters of the surface/interface model in the continuum framework, based on first-principles calculations performed on slab systems. The obtained continuum models allow avoiding full computations on atomistic models, which are not affordable for large sizes (diameters, layer thickness). An increase of the overall stiffness for both kinds of heterogeneous AlN/GaN nanostructures with the decrease of the dimensions is evidenced. The continuum models are then compared with full first-principles calculations to demonstrate their accuracy and their ability to capture size effects.
Anisotropies of the G-Factor Tensor and Diamagnetic Coefficient in Crystal-Phase Quantum Dots in InP Nanowires

Abstract:Crystal-phase low-dimensional structures offer great potential for the implementation of photonic devices of interest for quantum information processing. In this context, unveiling the fundamental parameters of the crystal phase structure is of much relevance for several applications. Here, we report on the anisotropy of the g-factor tensor and diamagnetic coefficient in wurtzite/zincblende (WZ/ZB) crystal-phase quantum dots (QDs) realized in single InP nanowires. The WZ and ZB alternating axial sections in the NWs are identified by high-angle annular dark-field scanning transmission electron microscopy. The electron (hole) g-factor tensor and the exciton diamagnetic coefficients in WZ/ZB crystal-phase QDs are determined through micro-photoluminescence measurements at low temperature (4.2 K) with different magnetic field configurations, and rationalized by invoking the spin-correlated orbital current model. Our work provides key parameters for band gap engineering and spin states control in crystal-phase low-dimensional structures in nanowires.
Shrinking tension-compression asymmetry of Au nanowires by designed nanotwin boundaries

Abstract:<p>Atomistic simulation is applied to investigate the tension-compression (T-C) asymmetry of the nanotwinned Au nanowires (NTWs) with the different twin orientations in this paper. The result demonstrates that the T-C asymmetry is not only represented by the different yield stress under tensile and compressive load, namely yield asymmetry, but also highlighted by the different strengthening effect of twin boundaries, namely strengthening asymmetry. The yield asymmetry in the NTWs becomes weaker than that in their single-crystal counterparts and highly twin orientation-dependent. In more details, the compressive yield stress is larger than the tensile yield stress when the twin orientation angle is 0°, 19.47° and 90°, while the opposite is true as the twin orientation angle changes to 54.74°. The strengthening effect is much obvious under tensile load in the NTW with a twin orientation angle of 0°, while no significant difference is found in the NTW with a twin orientation angle of 90°. In contrast, the NTWs with a twin orientation angle of 19.47° and 54.74° exhibit great reduced tensile and compressive strength. This work not only deepens our understanding of the mechanical behavior of the nanotwinned metal but also provides a new strategy to control mechanical behavior <em>via</em> nanotwin boundaries design.</p>

Abstract:Using molecular-dynamic (MD) simulation, we studied the mechanical responses of fivefold twinned silver nanowire (NW) for tensile and torsional deformations. Although the relaxed configuration of fivefold twinned NW possesses higher potential energy than 〈110〉 single crystalline NW, the internal stable of the unique structure provides a larger energetic barrier to defect formation. Under tensile loading condition, we find that the defect emission and propagation in fivefold twinned NW is prevented by the pre-existing twin boundaries. While the plastic deformation under torsion yield through the nucleation of coaxial dislocations, showing a quite uniformly distribution as observed in the end of the wire. Generally, different external loading leading to different deformation modes, as reported in this paper, might be useful in avoiding for certain deformation mechanisms of metallic NWs.

Abstract:In spite of numerous studies on mechanical behaviors of nanowires (NWs) focusing on the surface effect, there is still a general lack of understanding on how the internal microstructure of NWs influences their deformation mechanisms. Here, using quantitative in situ transmission electron microscopy based nanomechanical testing and molecular dynamics simulations, we report a transition of the deformation mechanism from localized dislocation slip to delocalized plasticity via an anomalous tensile detwinning mechanism in bitwinned metallic NWs with a single twin boundary (TB) running parallel to the NW length. The anomalous tensile detwinning starts with the detwinning of a segment of the preexisting TB under no resolved shear stress, followed by the propagation of a pair of newly formed TB and grain boundary leading to a large plastic deformation. An energy-based criterion is proposed to describe this transition of the deformation mechanism, which depends on the volume ratio between the two twin variants and the cross-sectional aspect ratio.
