Abstract:A simple and effective scheme for improving the lattice Hamiltonian in 1 + 1 dimensional QCD is given. The large Nc behavior of the vector meson mass in the chiral limit is studied by using this improved scheme. This numerical result is consistent with the analytical strong coupling result.

Abstract:We propose a physical mechanism for tuning the atom-atom interaction strength at ultra-low temperatures. In the presence of a dc electric field the interatomic potential is changed due to the effective dipole-dipole interaction between the polarized atoms. Detailed multi-channel scattering calculations reveal features never before discussed for ultra-cold atomic collisions. We demonstrate that optimal control of the effective atom-atom interactions can be achieved under reasonable laboratory conditions. Implications of this research on the physics of atomic Bose-Einstein condensation (BEC) and on the pursuit for atomic degenerate fermion gases will be discussed.

Abstract:We have investigated QCD with two flavors of degenerate fermions using a Symanzik-improved lattice action for both the gauge and fermion actions. Our study focuses on the deconfinement transition on an $N_t=4$ lattice. Having located the thermal transition, we performed zero temperature simulations nearby in order to compute hadronic masses and the static quark potential. We find that the present action reduces lattice artifacts present in thermodynamics with the standard Wilson (gauge and fermion) actions. However, it does not bring studies with Wilson-type quarks to the same level as those using the Kogut--Susskind formulation.

Lattice Hamiltonian for Adjoint QCD$_2$

Abstract:We introduce a Hamiltonian lattice model for the $(1+1)$-dimensional $\text{SU}(N_c)$ gauge theory coupled to one adjoint Majorana fermion of mass $m$. The discretization of the continuum theory uses staggered Majorana fermions. We analyze the symmetries of the lattice model and find lattice analogs of the anomalies of the corresponding continuum theory. An important role is played by the lattice translation by one lattice site, which in the continuum limit involves a discrete axial transformation. On a lattice with periodic boundary conditions, the Hilbert space breaks up into sectors labeled by the $N_c$-ality $p=0, \ldots N_c-1$. Our symmetry analysis implies various exact degeneracies in the spectrum of the lattice model. In particular, it shows that, for $m=0$ and even $N_c$, the sectors $p$ and $p'$ are degenerate if $|p-p'| = N_c/2$. In the $N_c = 2$ case, we explicitly construct the action of the Hamiltonian on a basis of gauge-invariant states, and we perform both a strong coupling expansion and exact diagonalization for lattices of up to $12$ lattice sites. Upon extrapolation of these results, we find good agreement with the spectrum computed previously using discretized light-cone quantization. One of our new results is the first numerical calculation of the fermion bilinear condensate.

Massive Meson Fluctuation in NJL Model

Abstract:Based on the self-consistent scheme beyond mean-field approximation in the large $N_c$ expansion, including current quark mass explicitly, a general scheme of SU(2) NJL model is developed. To ensure the quark self-energy expanded in the proper order of $N_c$, an approximate internal meson propagator is deduced, which is in order of $O(1/N_c)$. In our scheme, adopting the method of external momentum expansion, all the Feynman diagrams are calculated in a unified way by only expanding the quark propagator. Our numerical results show, that different from the mean field approximation in which the explicitly chiral symmetry breaking is invisible, the effect of finite pion mass can be seen clearly when beyond mean-field approximation.
Quantum Simulation of Lattice QCD with Improved Hamiltonians

Abstract:Quantum simulations of lattice gauge theories are anticipated to directly probe the real time dynamics of QCD, but scale unfavorably with the required truncation of the gauge fields. Improved Hamiltonians are derived to correct for the effects of gauge field truncations on the SU(3) Kogut-Susskind Hamiltonian. It is shown in $1+1D$ that this enables low chromo-electric field truncations to quantitatively reproduce features of the untruncated theory over a range of couplings and quark masses. In $3+1D$, an improved Hamiltonian is derived for lattice QCD with staggered massless fermions. It is shown in the strong coupling limit that the spectrum qualitatively reproduces aspects of two flavor QCD and simulations of a small system are performed on IBM's {\tt Perth} quantum processor.

Abstract:In this paper, a Hamiltonian lattice formulation for 2+1D compact Maxwell-Chern-Simons theory is derived. We analytically solve this theory and demonstrate that the mass gap in the continuum limit matches the well-known continuum formula. Our formulation preserves topological features such as the quantization of the Chern-Simons level, the degeneracy of energy eigenstates, the non-trivial properties of Wilson loops, and the mutual and self statistics of anyons. This work lays the groundwork for future Hamiltonian-based simulations of Maxwell-Chern-Simons theory on classical and quantum computers.

Chiral Effective Lagrangian for Heavy-Light Mesons from QCD: $1/m_{q}$ Correction

Abstract:As a successive work to [Phys.Rev.D 102 (2020), 034034], we derive the $1/m_Q$ corrections to chiral effective Lagrangian for heavy-light mesons from QCD under proper approximations. The low energy constants in the effective Lagrangian are expressed in terms of the light quark self-energy and heavy quark mass $m_Q$. Numerical results of the low energy constants with $1/m_Q$ corrections are given. We find that the results of pion decay constant and the masses of heavy-light mesons are improved coherently compared to that obtained in the heavy quark limit.

Abstract:Hybrid Monte Carlo (HMC) simulations of lattice gauge theories with fermionic matter rely on the invertibility of the lattice Dirac operator. Near-zero modes of the latter can therefore significantly slow down the update algorithm and cause instabilities. This is in particular a problem when dealing with massless fermions. Homogeneous temporal Dirichlet boundary conditions can be used to remove zero modes from massless lattice Dirac operators, but the standard implementation of these boundary conditions can cause severe finite-volume cutoff effects in regions of parameter space where the physics at the ultraviolet (UV) cutoff scale is dominated by the fermionic instead of the gauge action. In lattice quantum chromodynamics (QCD) this is usually not an issue, as the gauge action dominates the UV physics and the problem does not show up. In studies of beyond standard model (BSM) theories, on the other hand, the finite-volume artifacts can be severe. We have identified the origin of these IR cutoff effects and propose a simple improvement on the homogeneous temporal Dirichlet boundary conditions to prevent them. We demonstrate the benefits of using our improved boundary conditions at the example of SU(2) lattice gauge theory with $N_f=24$ massless Wilson-clover flavors. Due to the large number of fermions in this theory, the boundary-related finite volume artifacts are particularly strong, and the effect from switching from the normal to our improved homogeneous Dirichlet boundary conditions is therefore distinct.

Abstract:We propose a simple scheme to improve the Polyakov-Nambu-Jona-Lasinio model by including an explicit chemical-potential dependence in the Polyakov-loop potential. In the improved model, both the dynamical chiral symmetry restoration and the deconfinement are crossovers at high temperature T and small chemical potential mu, while they are first-order phase transitions at low T and large mu. We locate the critical end points and chart the phase diagrams of the associated phase transitions on the T-mu plane. Our result suggests that the dynamical chiral symmetry restoration and the deconfinement phase transitions almost coincide with each other on the T-mu plane.

Progress of Theoretical and Experimental Physics

Abstract:Numerical simulation of the low-energy dynamics of quarks and gluons is now feasible based on the fundamental theory of strong interaction, i.e. quantum chromodynamics (QCD). With QCD formulated on a 4D hypercubic lattice (called lattice QCD or LQCD), one can simulate the QCD vacuum and hadronic excitations on the vacuum using teraflop-scale supercomputers, which have become available in the last decade. A great deal of work has been done on this subject by many groups around the world; in this article we summarize the work done by the JLQCD and TWQCD collaborations since 2006. These collaborations employ Neuberger's overlap fermion formulation, which preserves the exact chiral and flavor symmetries on the lattice, unlike other lattice fermion formulations. Because of this beautiful property, numerical simulation of the formulation can address fundamental questions on the QCD vacuum, such as the microscopic structure of the quark-antiquark condensate in the chirally broken phase of QCD and its relation to SU(3) gauge field topology. Tests of the chiral effective theory, which is based on the assumption that the chiral symmetry is spontaneously broken in the QCD vacuum, can be performed, including the pion-loop effect test. For many other phenomenological applications, we adopt the all-to-all quark propagator technique, which allows us to compute various correlation functions without substantial extra cost. The benefit of this is not only that the statistical signal is improved but that disconnected quark-loop diagrams can be calculated. Using this method combined with the overlap fermion formulation, we study a wide range of physical quantities that are of both theoretical and phenomenological interest.

Abstract:We define and solve the $\text{U(1)}$ Chern-Simons-Maxwell theory on spacetime lattice, with an emphasis on the chirality of the theory. Realizing Chern-Simons theory on lattice has been a problem of interest for decades, and over the years it has gradually become clear that there are two key points: 1) Some non-topological term, such as a Maxwell term, is necessary -- this is true even in the continuum, but more manifestly on the lattice; 2) the $\text{U(1)}$ gauge field should be implemented in the Villainized form to retain its topological properties. Putting the two ideas together seriously, we show all interesting properties of a chiral Chern-Simons theory are reproduced in an explicitly regularized manner on the lattice. These include the bosonic and fermionic level quantization, the bulk and chiral edge spectrum, the Wilson loop flux attachment (with point-split framing or geometric framing depending on the Maxwell coupling), the Wilson loop spin, the ground state degeneracy, and, most non-trivially, the chiral gravitational anomaly.

Abstract:We propose the ( 3+1 )-dimensional Z3 lattice gauge theory coupled with the 2-flavor Wilson-Dirac fermion as a toy model for studying quantum chromodynamics (QCD) at nonzero density. Lattice study of the chiral properties of large $N_c$ QCD

Abstract:We present a lattice calculation of the low energy constants of QCD with $N_c=3$, 4 and 5 colors and $N_f=2$ flavors of degenerate mass fermions. We fit data for the pseudoscalar meson mass, the pseudoscalar decay constant, and the Axial Ward Identity fermion mass to formulas from next to next to leading order chiral perturbation theory. We extract the next to leading order low energy constants and study their behavior as a function of $N_c$. Pre-existing analyses of $N_c=3$ inform our fitting strategies.

Abstract:We apply to lattice QCD a bosonization method previously developed in which dynamical bosons are generated by time-dependent Bogoliubov transformations. The transformed action can be studied by an expansion in the inverse of the nilpotency index, which is the number of fermionic states in the structure function of composite bosons. When this number diverges the model is solved by the saddle point method which has a variational interpretation. We give a stationary covariant solution for a background matter field whose fluctuations describe mesons. In the saddle point approximations live fermionic quasiparticles with quark quantum numbers which are confined, in the sense that they propagate only in pointlike color singlets. Conditions for chiral symmetry breaking are determined, to be studied numerically, and a derivation of mesons-nucleons action is outlined.

Constraints on the in-medium nuclear interaction from chiral symmetry and Lattice-QCD

Abstract:In this paper we discuss the combined effects on nuclear matter properties of the quark confinement mechanism in nucleon and of the chiral effective potential resulting from the spontaneous breaking of the chiral symmetry in nuclear matter. Based on the Nambu-Jona-Lasinio predictions, it is shown that the chiral potential acquires a specific scalar field cubic dependence, which contributes to the three-body interaction. We also discuss the constraints induced by Lattice-QCD on the model parameters governing the saturation properties. We introduce the term "QCD-connected parameters" for these quantities. We demonstrate that chiral symmetry and Lattice-QCD provide coherent constraints on the in-medium nuclear interaction, suggesting a fundamental origin of the saturation mechanism.

Abstract:We present an improved calculation of the and coupling constants, where V denotes , , , and mesons. These couplings govern the long-distance quantum chromodynamics (QCD) in interactions between heavy pseudo-scalar/vector mesons and light vector mesons. Our analysis is conducted within the framework of QCD light-cone sum rules (LCSRs) by utilizing the light-cone distribution amplitudes (LCDAs) of light vector mesons. By systematically incorporating the subleading power corrections and higher-twist contributions at the leading order (LO) and including the next-to-leading order (NLO) corrections at leading power, we achieve enhanced accuracy in the light-cone operator product expansion (OPE) for the underlying correlation function. In assessing the reliability of the established LCSRs, we consider uncertainties arising from the choice of the quark–hadron duality region in the double dispersion relation. Building upon these improvements, we accomplish an optimized computation and analysis for the strong coupling constants which are used to extract the effective coupling in the heavy meson chiral perturbation theory (HM PT). Furthermore, we investigate the SU (3) flavor symmetry-breaking effects in detail and compare our sum rule calculations with previous studies in an exploratory way.

Abstract:The quark mass function is computed both by solving the quark propagator Dyson-Schwinger equation and from lattice simulations implementing overlap and domain-wall fermion actions for valence and sea quarks, respectively. The results are examined and are seen to produce a very congruent picture, showing a remarkable agreement for the explored range of current-quark masses. The effective running interaction is based on a process-independent charge rooted on a particular truncation of the Dyson-Schwinger equations in the gauge sector, establishing a link from there to the quark sector and inspiring a correlation between the emergence of gluon and hadron masses.
