Abstract:In this paper we propose a new approach to formulate the field theory on a lattice. This approach can eliminate the Fermion doubling problem, preserve the chiral symmetry and get the same dispersion relation for both Fermion and Boson fields. This gives us the possibility to write down the chiral model (such as the Weinberg-Salam model) on a lattice.

Abstract:Our review of the lattice chiral fermion delves into some critical areas of lattice field theory. By abandoning Hermiticity, the non-Hermitian formulation circumvents the Nielsen-Ninomiya theorem while maintaining chiral symmetry, a novel approach. Comparing the Wilson and overlap fermions gives insight into how lattice formulations handle chiral symmetry. The Wilson fermion explicitly breaks chiral symmetry to eliminate doublers. In contrast, the overlap fermion restores a modified form of chiral symmetry using the Ginsparg-Wilson relation. We investigate how the (1+1)D Wilson fermion relates to the (1+1)D overlap fermion in the Hamiltonian formulation. This connection could provide a clearer physical understanding of how chiral symmetry manifests at the lattice level. Depending on Hermiticity for efficiency, Monte Carlo methods face unique challenges in a non-Hermitian setting. We investigate how to correctly apply this method to non-Hermitian lattice fermions, which is essential for practical simulations. Finally, the review of topological charge is crucial, as topological features in lattice formulations are strongly connected to chiral symmetry, anomalies, and the index theorem.

Abstract:Recently, lattice formulations of Abelian chiral gauge theory in two dimensions have been devised on the basis of the Abelian bosonization. A salient feature of these 2D lattice formulations is that the gauge invariance is \emph{exactly\/} preserved for anomaly-free theories and thus is completely free from the question of the gauge mode decoupling. In the present paper, we propose a yet another lattice formulation sharing this desired property. A particularly unique point in our formulation is that the vertex operator of the dual scalar field, which carries the vector charge of the fermion and the ``magnetic charge'' in the bosonization, is represented by a ``hole'' excised from the lattice; this is the excision method formulated recently by Abe et al. in a somewhat different context.

Abstract:A new multifield formulation of lattice QCD is proposed. The model is free of spectrum doubling and preserves all nonanomalous chiral symmetries up to exponentially small corrections. It is argued that a small number of fields may provide a good approximation making computer simulations feasible.

Abstract:We define and solve the $\text{U(1)}$ Chern-Simons-Maxwell theory on spacetime lattice, with an emphasis on the chirality of the theory. Realizing Chern-Simons theory on lattice has been a problem of interest for decades, and over the years it has gradually become clear that there are two key points: 1) Some non-topological term, such as a Maxwell term, is necessary -- this is true even in the continuum, but more manifestly on the lattice; 2) the $\text{U(1)}$ gauge field should be implemented in the Villainized form to retain its topological properties. Putting the two ideas together seriously, we show all interesting properties of a chiral Chern-Simons theory are reproduced in an explicitly regularized manner on the lattice. These include the bosonic and fermionic level quantization, the bulk and chiral edge spectrum, the Wilson loop flux attachment (with point-split framing or geometric framing depending on the Maxwell coupling), the Wilson loop spin, the ground state degeneracy, and, most non-trivially, the chiral gravitational anomaly.

Abstract:Chiral gauge theories in two dimensions have been receiving much attention recently. Though quantum field theories with gauge field coupling to chiral fermion suffer from the loss of gauge invariance, it can be consistently quantized[1]. A proper quantum treatment of the gauge degrees of freedom in chiral gauge theories uncovers the presence of the Wess-Zumino effective action exactly[2]. In view of these interests in chiral gauge theories, the study of two-dimensional chiral gauge model on the lattice should prove useful. It is well-known that there will appear the species dubling when we naively discretize a fermion on the lattice[3]. In our approach we shall use Wilson fermion[4] which copes the problem[5]. The Wilson term, however, will break not only the chiral invariance but also the gauge invariance when the chiral gauge field is introduced. Aoki[6] had redrived the nonabelian anomaly with consideration of chiral gauge theory on the lattice and thought the existence of the anomaly may be related with the gauge symmetry breaking due to the Wilson term. It will be shown in follows that the Wess-Zumino effective action and the vector-boson mass as the anomalous generation terms appear due to a nontrivial change in the Wilson term under the chiral transformation in fermion.

Abstract:We review the recent progress in new lattice fermion formulations. We focus on the following three types which have possibility of improving lattice simulations. (1) Flavored-mass fermions are a generalization of Wilson fermions with species-splitting mass terms. In particular, staggered-Wilson fermions initiated by Adams have possibilities of reducing numerical costs in overlap fermions and the influence of taste-breaking in staggered fermions. (2) Central-branch Wilson fermions, in which additive mass renormalization is forbidden by extra axial symmetry, could enable us to perform Wilson-fermion lattice QCD without fine-tuning. (3) Minimally doubled fermions, which reduce the number of species by species-dependent chemical potential terms, realizes a ultra-local chiral fermion at the price of hypercubic symmetry. These setups reveal unknown aspects of lattice fermions, and we obtain a deeper understanding of lattice field theory.

Abstract:Abstract In the standard lattice domain-wall fermion formulation, one needs two flat domain-walls where both of the left- and right-handed massless modes appear. In this work we investigate a single domain-wall system with a nontrivial curved background. Specifically we consider a massive fermion on a three-dimensional square lattice, whose domain-wall is a two-dimensional sphere. In the free theory, we find that a single Weyl fermion is localized at the wall and it feels gravity through the induced spin connection. With a topologically nontrivial U(1) link gauge field, however, we find a zero mode with the opposite chirality localized at the center where the gauge field is singular. In the latter case, the low-energy effective theory is not chiral but vectorlike. We discuss how to circumvent this obstacle in formulating lattice chiral gauge theory in the single domain-wall fermion system.

Abstract:We discuss a method for regularizing chiral gauge theories. The idea is to formulate the gauge fields on the lattice, while the fermion determinant is regularized and computed in the continuum. A simple effective action emerges which lends itself to numerical simulations.

Abstract:In this paper, a Hamiltonian lattice formulation for 2+1D compact Maxwell-Chern-Simons theory is derived. We analytically solve this theory and demonstrate that the mass gap in the continuum limit matches the well-known continuum formula. Our formulation preserves topological features such as the quantization of the Chern-Simons level, the degeneracy of energy eigenstates, the non-trivial properties of Wilson loops, and the mutual and self statistics of anyons. This work lays the groundwork for future Hamiltonian-based simulations of Maxwell-Chern-Simons theory on classical and quantum computers.

A New-Old Approach to Composite Scalars with Chiral Fermion Constituents

Abstract:We develop a dynamical, Lorentz invariant theory of composite scalars in configuration space consisting of chiral fermions, interacting by the perturbative exchange of a massive "gluon" of coupling $g_0$ and mass $M_0^2$ (the coloron model). The formalism is inspired by, but goes beyond, old ideas of Yukawa and the Nambu-Jona-Lasinio (NJL) model. It yields a non-pointlike internal wave-function of the bound state, $\phi(r)$, which satisfies a Schrödinger-Klein-Gordon (SKG) equation with eigenvalue $\mu^2$. For super-critical coupling, $g_0 >g_{0c}$, we have $\mu^2< 0$ leading to spontaneous symmetry breaking. The binding of chiral fermions is semiclassical, and not loop-level as in NJL. The mass scale is determined by the interaction as in NJL. We mainly focus on the short-distance, large $M_0^2$ limit, yielding an NJL pointlike interaction, but the bound state internal wave-function, $\phi(r)$, remains spatially extended and dilutes $\phi(0)$. This leads to power-law suppression of the induced Yukawa and quartic couplings and requires radically less fine-tuning of a hierarchy than does the NJL model. We include a discussion of loop corrections of the theory. A realistic top--condensation model appears possible.

Abstract:The Nielson-Ninomiya theorem states that a chirally invariant free fermion lattice action, which is local, translation invariant, and real necessarily has fermion doubling. The SLAC approach gives up on locality and long range hopping leads to a linear dispersion with singularity at the zone boundary. We introduce a SLAC Hamiltonian formulation that is expected to realize a U(1) helical Luttinger liquid in a naive continuum limit. We argue that non-locality and concomitant singularity at the zone edge has important implications. Large momentum transfers yield spurious features already in the non-interacting case. Upon switching on interactions non-locality invalidates the Mermin-Wagner theorem and allows for long ranged magnetic ordering. In fact, in the strong coupling limit the model maps onto an XXZ-spin chain with $1/r^2$ exchange. Here, both spin-wave and DMRG calculations support long ranged order. While the long-ranged order opens a single particle gap the Dirac point, the singularity at the zone-boundary persists for any finite value of the interaction strength such that the ground state remains metallic. Hence, SLAC Hamiltonian does not flow to the $1$d helical Luttinger liquid fixed point. Aside from DMRG simulations, we have used auxiliary field quantum Monte Carlo simulations to arrive to the above conclusions.

Abstract:It is generally believed that the 1+1D model for a single chiral fermion does not exist by itself alone on lattice. The obstruction to such a lattice realization is the failure to reproduce the quantum anomalies of a chiral fermion in continuum. The conventional way to escape is to associate the anomalous 1d system with a 2d bulk, which is in a topologically non-trivial state, as the boundary of the latter. In this paper, we propose a 1+1D chiral fermion model on 1d spatial lattice, standing alone — without being associated with a 2d bulk — with a simple non-Hermitian hopping Hamiltonian. We demonstrate, using various methods, that the model possesses the same chiral anomaly and gravitational anomaly as in continuum theory. Furthermore, with appropriate parameters, the low energy effective theory of the model remains a field theory for unitary chiral fermions. The essential reason for the success is that the usual "doubled" fermion mode with opposite chirality is rapidly damped out because of non-Hermicity of the Hamiltonian.

Abstract:The idea of statistical transmutation plays a crucial role in descriptions of the fractional quantum Hall effect. However, a recently conjectured duality between a critical boson and a massless two-component Dirac fermion extends this notion to gapless systems. This duality sheds light on highly nontrivial problems such as the half-filled Landau level, the superconductor-insulator transition, and surface states of strongly coupled topological insulators. Although this boson-fermion duality has undergone many consistency checks, it has remained unproven. We describe the duality in a nonperturbative fashion using an exact UV mapping of partition functions on a 3D Euclidean lattice.

Abstract:In a recent provocative paper, Lamport points out "the insubstantiality of processes" by proving the equivalence of two different decompositions of the same intuitive algorithm by means of temporal formulas. We point out that the correct equivalence of algorithms is itself in the eye of the beholder.
