Abstract:A new multifield formulation of lattice QCD is proposed. The model is free of spectrum doubling and preserves all nonanomalous chiral symmetries up to exponentially small corrections. It is argued that a small number of fields may provide a good approximation making computer simulations feasible.

Abstract:We explore the chiral aspects of extrapolation of observables calculated within lattice QCD, using the nucleon magnetic moments as an example. Our analysis shows that the biggest effects of chiral dynamics occur for quark masses corresponding to a pion mass below 600 MeV. In this limited range chiral perturbation theory is not rapidly convergent, but we can develop some understanding of the behaviour through chiral quark models. This model dependent analysis leads us to a simple Pad\'e approximant which builds in both the limits $m_\pi \to 0$ and $m_\pi \to \infty$ correctly and permits a consistent, model independent extrapolation to the physical pion mass which should be extremely reliable.

Abstract:One of the most challenging issues in QCD is the investigation of spontaneous chiral-symmetry breaking, which is characterized by the non-vanishing chiral condensate when the bare fermion mass is zero. In standard methods of the lattice gauge theory, one has to perform expensive simulations at multiple bare quark masses, and employ some modeled functions to extrapolate the data to the chiral limit. This paper applies the probability distribution function method to computing the chiral condensate in lattice QCD with massless dynamical quarks, without any ambiguous mass extrapolation. The results for staggered quarks indicate that this might be a promising and efficient method for investigating the spontaneous chiral-symmetry breaking in lattice QCD, which deserves further investigation.
Lattice QED in an external magnetic field: Evidence for dynamical chiral symmetry breaking

Abstract:We simulate QED in a strong constant homogeneous external magnetic field on a euclidean space-time lattice using the Rational Hybrid Monte Carlo method, developed for simulating lattice QCD. Our primary goal is to measure the chiral condensate in the limit when the input electron mass $m$ is zero. We observe a non-zero value, indicating that the external magnetic field catalyzes chiral symmetry breaking as predicted by approximate truncated Schwinger-Dyson methods. Such behaviour is associated with dominance by the lowest Landau level which causes the effective dimensional reduction from $3+1$~dimensions to $1+1$ dimensions for charged particles (electrons and positrons) where the attractive forces of QED can produce chiral symmetry breaking with a dynamical electron mass and associated chiral condensate. Since our lattice simulations use bare (lattice) parameters, while the Schwinger-Dyson analyses work with renormalized quantities, direct numerical comparison will require renormalization of our lattice results.

A Multiple-Grid-Patch Evolution Scheme for 3-D Black Hole Excision

Abstract:When using black hole excision to numerically evolve a fully generic black hole spacetime, most 3-D 3+1 codes use an $xyz$-topology (spatial) grid. In such a grid, an $r = \constant$ excision surface must be approximated by an irregular and non-smooth "staircase-shaped" excision grid boundary, which may introduce numerical instabilities into the evolution. In this paper I describe an alternate scheme, which uses multiple grid patches, each with topology $\{r \times ({\rm angular coordinates})\}$, to cover the slice outside the $r = \constant$ excision surface. The excision grid boundary is now smooth, so the evolution should be less prone to instabilities. With 4th order finite differencing, this code evolves Kerr initial data to ${\sim} 60M$ using the ADM equations; I'm currently implementing the BSSN equations in it in the hope that this will improve the stability.

Progress of Theoretical and Experimental Physics

Abstract:Numerical simulation of the low-energy dynamics of quarks and gluons is now feasible based on the fundamental theory of strong interaction, i.e. quantum chromodynamics (QCD). With QCD formulated on a 4D hypercubic lattice (called lattice QCD or LQCD), one can simulate the QCD vacuum and hadronic excitations on the vacuum using teraflop-scale supercomputers, which have become available in the last decade. A great deal of work has been done on this subject by many groups around the world; in this article we summarize the work done by the JLQCD and TWQCD collaborations since 2006. These collaborations employ Neuberger's overlap fermion formulation, which preserves the exact chiral and flavor symmetries on the lattice, unlike other lattice fermion formulations. Because of this beautiful property, numerical simulation of the formulation can address fundamental questions on the QCD vacuum, such as the microscopic structure of the quark-antiquark condensate in the chirally broken phase of QCD and its relation to SU(3) gauge field topology. Tests of the chiral effective theory, which is based on the assumption that the chiral symmetry is spontaneously broken in the QCD vacuum, can be performed, including the pion-loop effect test. For many other phenomenological applications, we adopt the all-to-all quark propagator technique, which allows us to compute various correlation functions without substantial extra cost. The benefit of this is not only that the statistical signal is improved but that disconnected quark-loop diagrams can be calculated. Using this method combined with the overlap fermion formulation, we study a wide range of physical quantities that are of both theoretical and phenomenological interest.

Abstract:While chiral quantum field theories (QFTs) describe a wide range of physical systems, from the standard model to topological quantum matter, the realization of chiral QFTs on a lattice has proved to be difficult due to the Nielsen-Ninomiya theorem and the possible presence of quantum anomalies. In this thesis, we use the connection between chiral phases of matter and chiral quantum field theories (QFTs) to define chiral QFTs on a lattice and allow a huge class of exotic field theories to be simulated numerically. Our work builds on the 'mirror fermion' approach to the problem of defining chiral theories on a lattice, which defines chiral field theories as the edge modes of chiral phases. We begin by reviewing the deep connections between chiral phases of matter, chiral field theories, and anomalies. We then develop numerical treatments of an $SU(2)$ chiral field theory, and provide a semiclassically solvable definition of Abelian $2+1$ chiral topological orders. This leads to an exactly solvable definition of chiral $U(1)$ SPT phases with zero correlation length, which we use to extract the edge chiral field theories exactly. These zero-correlation length models are vastly more simple than previous approaches to defining chiral field theories on the lattice.

Fate of Chiral Symmetries in the Quark-Gluon Plasma from an Instanton-Based Random Matrix Model of QCD

Abstract:We propose a new way of understanding how chiral symmetry is realized in the high temperature phase of QCD. Based on the finding that a simple free instanton gas precisely describes the details of the lowest part of the spectrum of the lattice overlap Dirac operator, we propose an instanton-based random matrix model of QCD with dynamical quarks. Simulations of this model reveal that even for small quark mass the Dirac spectral density has a singularity at the origin, caused by a dilute gas of free instantons. Even though the interaction, mediated by light dynamical quarks creates small instanton-antiinstanton molecules, those do not influence the singular part of the spectrum, and this singular part is shown to dominate Banks-Casher type sums in the chiral limit. By generalizing the Banks-Casher formula for the singular spectrum, we show that in the chiral limit the chiral condensate vanishes if there are at least two massless flavors. Our model also indicates a possible way of resolving a long-standing debate, as it suggests that for two massless quark flavors the $U(1)_{A}$ symmetry is likely to remain broken up to arbitrarily high finite temperatures.

The chiral phase transition for lattice QCD with 2 colour-sextet quarks

Abstract:QCD with 2 flavours of massless colour-sextet quarks is studied as a possible walking-Technicolor candidate. We simulate the lattice version of this model at finite temperatures near to the chiral-symmetry restoration transition, to determine whether it is indeed a walking theory (QCD-like with a running coupling which evolves slowly over an appreciable range of length scales) or if it has an infrared fixed point, making it a conformal field theory. The lattice spacing at this transition is decreased towards zero by increasing the number $N_t$ of lattice sites in the temporal direction. Our simulations are performed at $N_t=4,6,8,12$, on lattices with spatial extent much larger than the temporal extent. A range of small fermion masses is chosen to make predictions for the chiral (zero mass) limit. We find that the bare lattice coupling does decrease as the lattice spacing is decreased. However, it decreases more slowly than would be predicted by asymptotic freedom. We discuss whether this means that the coupling is approaching a finite value as lattice $N_t$ is increased -- the conformal option, or if the apparent disagreement with the scaling predicted by asymptotic freedom is because the lattice coupling is a poor expansion parameter, and the theory walks. Currently, evidence favours QCD with 2 colour-sextet quarks being a conformal field theory. Other potential sources of disagreement with the walking hypothesis are also discussed. We also report an estimate of the position of the deconfinement transition for $N_t=12$, needed for choosing parameters for zero-temperature simulations.

Abstract:We show that the quark (not nucleon) based chiral linear $\sigma$ model which receives strong support as a mean field theory for the strong interactions can actually be made asymptotically free by coupling to gluons. It has the further bonus of providing <a class="link-external link-http" href="http://confinement.Alternatively" rel="external noopener nofollow">this http URL</a>, this theory is QCD that is chirally extended by the addition of a $(\sigma,\pi)$ chiral multiplet. It could therefore be a candidate theory for the strong interactions which is somewhat different from QCD.

Abstract:By trapping cold polarizable atoms in periodic potentials created by crossed laser beams, it is now possible to experimentally create "clean" lattice systems. Experimentalists have successfully engineered local and nearest-neighbor interactions that approximately recreate Hubbard-like models on table tops. I discuss the possibility of using this new technology in the context of lattice gauge theory and in particular, relativistic dispersion relations, flavor symmetry, functional derivatives and emerging local gauge symmetry.

Thermodynamics of lattice QCD with 2 sextet quarks on N_t=8 lattices

Abstract:We continue our lattice simulations of QCD with 2 flavours of colour-sextet quarks as a model for conformal or walking technicolor. A 2-loop perturbative calculation of the $\beta$-function which describes the evolution of this theory's running coupling constant predicts that it has a second zero at a finite coupling. This non-trivial zero would be an infrared stable fixed point, in which case the theory with massless quarks would be a conformal field theory. However, if the interaction between quarks and antiquarks becomes strong enough that a chiral condensate forms before this IR fixed point is reached, the theory is QCD-like with spontaneously broken chiral symmetry and confinement. However, the presence of the nearby IR fixed point means that there is a range of couplings for which the running coupling evolves very slowly, i.e. it 'walks'. We are simulating the lattice version of this theory with staggered quarks at finite temperature studying the changes in couplings at the deconfinement and chiral-symmetry restoring transitions as the temporal extent ($N_t$) of the lattice, measured in lattice units, is increased. Our earlier results on lattices with $N_t=4,6$ show both transitions move to weaker couplings as $N_t$ increases consistent with walking behaviour. In this paper we extend these calculations to $N_t=8$. Although both transition again move to weaker couplings the change in the coupling at the chiral transition from $N_t=6$ to $N_t=8$ is appreciably smaller than that from $N_t=4$ to $N_t=6$. This indicates that at $N_t=4,6$ we are seeing strong coupling effects and that we will need results from $N_t > 8$ to determine if the chiral-transition coupling approaches zero as $N_t \rightarrow \infty$, as needed for the theory to walk.

Abstract:Non-perturbative lattice QCD calculations at non vanishing baryon number density are hampered by the QCD sign problem. The path integral, that in lattice QCD is calculated numerically, becomes highly oscillating. One possible solution is the Lefschetz thimble approach. It requires a deformation of the original integration domain into a manifold embedded in complex space. For properly chosen integration manifolds ("thimbles") the sign problem is drastically alleviated. For some bosonic and fermionic models this approach has been shown to work. Here we apply the thimble disretization to (0+1)-dimensional QCD with standard staggerd quarks and disscuss issues that may arrise in higher dimensions.

Abstract:In this paper we study the Chiral Separation Effect by means of first-principles lattice QCD simulations. For the first time in the literature, we determine the continuum limit of the associated conductivity using 2+1 flavors of dynamical staggered quarks at physical masses. The results reveal a suppression of the conductivity in the confined phase and a gradual enhancement toward the perturbative value for high temperatures. In addition to our dynamical setup, we also investigate the impact of the quenched approximation on the conductivity, using both staggered and Wilson quarks. Finally, we highlight the relevance of employing conserved vector and anomalous axial currents in the lattice simulations.

Abstract:We present the lattice QCD simulation with the 2+1+1 flavor full QCD ensembles using near-physical quark masses and different spatial sizes $L$, at $a\sim$ 0.055 fm. The results suggest that spontaneous chiral symmetry breaking is effectively restored at $L\le 1.0$ fm, while the gap between the nucleon and pion masses remains.

Reviews of Modern Physics

Abstract:The author reviews in a pedagogical fashion some of the recent developments in lattice quantum chromodynamics. This review emphasizes explicit examples and illustrations rather than general proofs and analyses. It begins with a discussion of the heavy-quark potential in continuum quantum chromodynamics. Asymptotic freedom and renormalization-group improved perturbation theory are discussed. A simple dielectric model of confinement is considered as an intuitive guide to the vacuum of non-Abelian gauge theories. Next, the Euclidean form of lattice gauge theory is introduced, and an assortment of calculational methods are reviewed. These include high-temperature expansions, duality, Monte Carlo computer simulations, and weak coupling expansions. A Λ- parameter calculation for asymptotically free-spin models is presented. The Hamiltonian formulation of lattice gauge theory is presented and is illustrated in the context of flux tube dynamics. Roughening transitions, Casimir forces, and the restoration of rotational symmetry are discussed. Mechanisms of confinement in lattice theories are illustrated in the two-dimensional electrodynamics of the planar model and the U(1) gauge theory in four dimensions. Generalized actions for SU(2) gauge theories and the relevance of monopoles and strings to crossover phenomena are considered. A brief discussion of the continuity of fields and topological charge in asymptotically free lattice models is presented. The final major topic of this review concerns lattice fermions. The species doubling problem and its relation to chiral symmetry are illustrated. Staggered Euclidean fermion methods are discussed in detail, with an emphasis on species counting, remnants of chiral symmetry, Block spin variables, and the axial anomaly. Numerical methods for including fermions in computer simulations are considered. Jacobi and Gauss-Siedel inversion methods to obtain the fermion propagator in a background gauge field are reviewed. Langevin, pseudofermion Monte Carlo methods, and random walk methods are discussed, as are proposals for including the fermion determinant in computer simulations. Finally, spontaneous chiral symmetry breaking in lattice models is discussed. The review ends with brief remarks about present research directions.

Abstract:We investigate three-colour QCD thermodynamics at finite quark chemical potential. Lattice QCD results are compared with a generalized Nambu Jona-Lasinio model in which quarks couple simultaneously to the chiral condensate and to a background temporal gauge field representing Polyakov loop dynamics. This so-called PNJL model thus includes features of both deconfinement and chiral symmetry restoration. The parameters of the Polyakov loop effective potential are fixed in the pure gauge sector. The chiral condensate and the Polyakov loop as functions of temperature and quark chemical potential are calculated by minimizing the thermodynamic potential of the system. The resulting equation of state, (scaled) pressure difference and quark number density at finite quark chemical potential are then confronted with corresponding Lattice QCD data.
